The Project

The apartments are part of the Vida Pura eco retreat and inspiration land. As well as staying in accommodation full of natural materials, you will get to enjoy a 100% ecological holiday experience. Not only does the retreat harness its energy from sun and wind, but we also source our own water, treat our own drainage and produce a lot of our own food.

The retreat features a biodynamic farm which creates great natural produce for you to enjoy, if you so wish, and we have lots of delicious, home-made products available to you. The farm contains various animals; we have chickens, ducks, cats, dogs and donkeys, that all play their part in helping us sustain this rewarding lifestyle both as committed co-workers and as domestic companions.

We recycle our glass, plastic, paper, metal and food and, because we produce our own renewable energy, we operate with a very low carbon output and minimal waste.

Consequently, you can relax, safe in the knowledge that your holiday is putting no additional strain on the planet. Of course, we ask our workers, visitors and guests to help us adhere to this low-impact ethos. Since we acquire most of our energy from the sun, our supply is limited to what nature gives us.

As such, we must ask everyone to be kind to our systems; heavy electricity usage and the use of high-consumption appliances - such as irons, hair dryers, etc.- will quickly drain our power supply.If you require the use of such items, we have special, low energy ones we can provide when needed. Of course, this doesn’t mean to say you’ll be sat in the dark if the sun isn’t out; we will always provide energy, but it’s part of the Vida Pura experience to be conscious of your usage. The same goes for water.

Since you are staying at a retreat we provide more than just the apartment; you can come and see, first-hand, what eco living means. We give tours, host workshops and organise retreats, all related to ecology, relaxation, creativity and connecting with nature.

Last but not least, this project is humanitarian in nature. Our profits are put towards humanitarian projects. We aim to support projects from all over the world - both financially and with hands-on help. In this way we can do our bit to help those who devote their lives to aiding others: humans or animals in need.

Both professionally and personally, we live ecologically and ethically as pure as possible. This is how we live our life the Vida Pura way.

• THE GARDEN - BIODINAMIC •

The inspiration for this one-of-a-kind apartment came from the original Portuguese name of the land, ’Moinho das Canas’, which, freely translated, means Cane Mill. As the name suggests, a lot of cane grows here, and we used this material to decorate this apartment. You will find bamboo used in all sorts of ways: in the ceilings and interior finishing, in the table, the kitchen shelves, and even the bed.The use of other natural building materials, such as cork, wood and stone, gives the apartment a truly harmonious feel.

The living area contains a comfy, bespoke sofa, situated near a cosy wood-burner.A tiny oven built into the stove means that, on a cold day, you could even make a fire and cook a cake, should the mood take you.

The windows to the front of the apartment grant an amazing view of the valley and access to a beautiful wooden decking area (more than 30m²), complete with outside shower and plenty of space for lounging, sitting, or doing yoga.

The Bamboo Apartment features:

• One bedroom, double bed (160cm x 200cm).• Bathroom with shower, toilet and sink. • A corridor with wardrobe. • A split level down (50 cm 3 steps) open space living, dining and kitchen area.• A simple rural kitchen with fridge, gas stove with oven, extraction fan and utensils. • Low loft to sleep up to 3 children (access through a wooden ladder).• Use of wash machine (not in but near the apartment).• Fire place for winter. • Decking with great view.• Free wifi.• Hairdryer (please don’t bring your own in relation to energy efficiency).• Use of wash machine (not in the apartment but nearby).• Bike rental on request.• Breakfast, lunch or dinner on request.

Electricity, water and gas are included in the price; you will only pay for wood in the winter if you choose to make a fire. The building is centrally heated.

For guests with children we can provide cots for the bedroom. Younger children can sleep on an extra bed in the living room or, if over five years old, can use the low loft, is a great adventure for kids. Access is via a small staircase. Alternatively, if old enough, we have a fully decorated yurt (Mongolian Tent – see page 8) within sight of the apartment. Please check for availability.

On the other side we have a tiled outside area – for extra sun exposure in the morning and on windy days. Through this side you can also access your vehicle’s parking area, located just 30 meters away from the apartment, at the end of a wide, slate-paved path.

As the name suggests, the Natural Elements apartment draws inspiration from the beauty of nature. The design of this wonderfully unique living space brings together a wealth of natural materials. The bedroom design incorporates the famous cork oaks of Portugal, a beautiful mosaic and wood finishes, while the bathroom is styled on the stunning vistas of the desert - complete with sand dunes created with Moroccan plastering techniques. The open-plan living room and kitchen area also boast many natural elements, such a cork, stone and wood.

For our more adventurous guests, Vida Pura has two great yurts – one on each side of our beautiful property.Historically built to withstand the long winters of Mongolia, yurts have recently experienced a surge in popularity throughout the world. Humble-yet-luxurious, these durable dwellings hold particular appeal for those wanting comfortable and spacious accommodation – but with a low environmental impact.Erected atop a wooden platform, a yurt consists of trestle-type walls, and a ceiling of wooden spokes which support the ‘crown’.

This large central window not only lets sunlight in during the day, but also allows occupants to gaze up at the stars at night. Layers of canvas and felt protect against adverse weather and help stabilise the inside temperature. For those of you wanting to be close to nature, it doesn’t come much better than this; let the sounds of the great outdoors and the songs of nightingales lull you off to sleep and, in the morning, gently awaken to more wonderful birdsong. Truly, yurt living makes for an unforgetta-bly relaxing night’s rest.

The Yurts features:

Both of our yurts contain a comfy double bed, sofa, dining table with two chairs, wood burner, light, electricity and an outside chill area. And, boasting inner dimensions of roughly 26m2, they’re surprisingly spacious! What’s more, each yurt is free-standing, so your only neighbours will be our three peaceful donkeys. For guests wishing to get the true ecological-living experience, a compost toilet is available for use. However, both yurts also have access to a shared bathroom (warm showers and flushing toilet) in the nearby ‘Straw bale’ building. This eco structure, made from straw bales, clay and lime, also grants use of a well-equipped kitchen and a living room with internet. Furthermore, an outside seating area features a grill and a clay oven which is great for making pizzas. All of these facilities are free for our guests to use as they please. Not only are the yurts ecological, but also economical. If you’re happy to forgo a few mod cons and live a little closer to our splendid natural surround-ings, this is the accommodation for you!

By car coming from the North: Make your way from Lisbon to Grandola, and then to Sines. Next, head for Vila Nova de Milfontes. Take the turning to Zambujeira do Mar and then, before you get there, follow the signs to Sao Teotonio. Head in the direction of Lagos and, just after the village of Baiona, you will cross the bridge of Odeceixe. Immediately after the bridge, turn left onto the track and follow it roughly 3.5km into the valley. Look out for a sign on the left saying ‘Vida Pura- Moinho das Canas’.

By car coming from the South: Coming from Faro/South, travel via the A22 in the direction of Portimao andLagos. After Lagos, at the end of the highway, take the N120 in the Direction of Sines. 15km after Aljezur, stop before the bridge of Odeceixe (if you pass a large sign for Alentejo, you’ve gone too far) and turn right, onto the track by the bus stop. After around 3.5km you will see the sign for ‘Vida Pura- Moinho das Canas’ on your left.

Bookings cancelled up to 4 weeks prior to arrival date will be charged 30% of total cost.Bookings cancelled up to 2 weeks prior to arrival date will loose the downpayment.

Our pets policy:

We love animals, however we must ask that you do not bring pets which might harass or harm our free-roaming ducks, chickens, donkeys, cats, dogs and small children.When bringing an animal we always prefer to have a chat over the phone to talk things through. On the property dogs always need to be on a leash.
