As consumers and designers in to-day’s ever-changing fashion industry, we must not forget the importance of our individual social responsibility. Through this vision we created Peony Rice, an ethical women’s fashion & lifestyle brand with a focus on working with local communities in South East Asia and promoting the importance of zero waste.

We challenge consumers to think more carefully about their purchases and the importance of utilizing what we have on hand, as well as educating on why we should choose natural fabrics over manmade.

Through this mission we initially worked with local communities in Cambodia. Promoting the beauty of silk through the vibrant colours and Ikats in our collection, as well as the history, process and the importance

We firmly believe there is a demand for special design, which is why it exists today. With a constant flow of fast fashion, it is easy to be caught up in the whirlpool of mass-market production. Together as a community and industry, we need to collectively work together on taking a step back, and refocusing on the skills and people behind the design.

We hope to challenge consumers over their ideals attached to “Made in China”. A country rich in traditional techniques, we hope that by staying true to these, we can portray to others how unique Asia is and the great designs we have to offer.

Amidst constant new concerns over product quality modern-day consumers have justified skepticisms when shopping. Although many are more educated and mindful of what they are using on a daily basis, clever

marketing ploys and sales techniques continue to mislead even the most rational of buyers. When a shopper sees a product labeled “organic” or “sustainable” this may quell some momentary concerns, but unless one has a background in chemical engineering, decoding the ingredients label of a product may seem like a hopeless task. Recent studies have uncovered harrowing facts surrounding the toxicity of many personal care products, the key for consumers is being aware of common culprits in harmful side effects.

The mid 1900s gave rise to widespread usage of petrol-derived compounds in personal care products, commonly used for their moisturising properties and as an aid for absorption.1 However, these compounds often times give way to bi-products, namely Parabens, EDTA and 1, 4 Dioxane which have been found to hold carcinogenic properties and cause endocrine disruption.2 The skin is the body’s largest organ, absorbing toxins at a rate faster than digestion and comparable to inhalation, The Environmental Working group has found that nearly 22% of skin care products contain carcinogenic impurities.3

So where does this leave the consumer? Before succumbing to a resigned, helpless acceptance of these dangers, consumers should go forth in search of natural remedies for their skin care needs.
