Switching On, Switching Off.

• This activity is about remembering to switch lights off around your school.

• We need the whole school to get involved.

Are you up for the challenge?

Did You Know?

• 63% of people forget to switch lights off when leaving a room.

• Lighting accounts for 14% of your home’s electricity bill.

• Leaving a 60W light bulb on for an hour each day uses the same amount of energy in a year as a month’s worth of evenings watching the TV would.

How many light bulbs do you think are there in the school?

There is a massive….

Just think of the electricity we are wasting if these were left on unnecessarily!!

Our Campaign

• We have already carried out a light audit, counting how many lights were left on or off.

• We are going to run the Switching On Switching Off Campaign this week.

• Then we will carry out a second audit to see how much the school has improved.

Things to Help You…

We have chosen light monitors, they will be wearing special badges all week.

Our job is to turn the lights off in the morning, after you have all come in to school.

There are signs under the switches to remind you to turn off the lights….

Switching On, Switching Off.

How did we do?

Page 14: Eco-Committee Assembly EDF Energy and Willand School. POD Activity and new campaign. Recycling Competition winners

Switching On, Switching Off.

• At the start of the week, we surveyed the whole school and found that a total of 111 lights were left on and 77 were switched off.

How did we do this week?

Page 15: Eco-Committee Assembly EDF Energy and Willand School. POD Activity and new campaign. Recycling Competition winners

Switching On, Switching Off.

• Yesterday, we surveyed the whole school again, and this time altogether, there were 52 lights left on and 135 lights switched off…

How much money does it cost?

This means that an extra 58 lights were switched switched off this week!

Page 16: Eco-Committee Assembly EDF Energy and Willand School. POD Activity and new campaign. Recycling Competition winners

Switching On, Switching Off.

One lightbulb costs on average…

1½ p per hour,

10p per day,

50p per week,

£2.00 per month,

£18.50 per year….

Page 17: Eco-Committee Assembly EDF Energy and Willand School. POD Activity and new campaign. Recycling Competition winners

We saved this week….

We had an extra 58 lightbulbs switched off in this school, so IF these extra lights

have been turned off the whole time, we could have saved…

£0.50 x 58

= £28.00

How much COULD we save?

Page 18: Eco-Committee Assembly EDF Energy and Willand School. POD Activity and new campaign. Recycling Competition winners

If we continue….IF these 58 extra lightbulbs were switched of for only

half of each school day, in one school year,

we could save up to a massive…..

£495.00!!
