Careful Preliminary Planning

█ Begin to learn and understand the building process in designing a laboratory

█ Structure your internal team members based on their skill sets, then assign expectations

█ Set protocol for internal communication of your entire team, including architects, engineers, contractors and lab planners

After internal processes are in place it is time for your needs assessment. There are important particulars to game plan first, including the following: space, processes, support, materials and storage.

You are already heading in the right direction by deploying these beginning strategies first. By applying these LAB Planning concepts you have effectively managed your exposure to over planning and/or under planning.

Simplicity

Focusing on downsizing or eliminating obstacles between processes is key to improving process flow and function. During your initial LAB Planning these are important decisions as they conclude in less expenses, construction, and time consumption. Obstacles hindering processes can be structures, walls, existing furniture, etcetera.

Think outside the box in your initial planning. Simplify processes by opening your floorplan and allow room for change in the future. Modular or adjustable furniture are always good options when concentrating on the aforementioned strategy. Improve your LAB with lean concepts that are agreed upon in the beginning by your team; again saving money.

Spend time understanding/learning the importance of islands and/or peninsulas to improve overall process control and usable space. Often times laboratories consume up to and between 60-70% of their usable square footage with fixed furniture applications. Most modern labs require furniture to have modular applications. A smart front end choice that considers future production flow changes. Again, saving money in the long term.

Planning the Construction of Your Laboratory


Establishing product placement and avoiding square footage consumption (overbuild)

Work with your architect and contractor to select your plumbing (wet wall) placement. It is always a savvy strategy to place sinks closest to the proximity of your most utilized testing and research areas. Establish your product flow - then select your wet walls - creating a process of efficiency from the very start and mitigating possible reconstruction in the future.

Safety is always first - it is a smart choice to place a dedicated sink for hand and/or eye washing near an entry or exit of the lab - Remember that sinks are costly due to the plumbing attributed to the construction costs. It is recommended to avoid placing sinks in areas that aren’t already prepped for plumbing. Example of this would be a sink at the end of an island or peninsula. Plumbing is expensive to install as it is, especially in areas where plumbing doesn’t already exist. A well laid out laboratory plan has a primary focus on MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing). These subjects can make or break a new labs budget.

MEP - review your buildings capacity for power. Avoid using extra power or permanently fixing raceways to furniture; these drive costs up. Remember the less plumbing requirements, the less cost in construction and possible future maintenance.

During your initial projections you should have begun planning of your build needs - with a main focus on power and ventilation. Your architect and contractor are a major contributor to this phase. Always plan ahead for storage, supplies, specialty gasses and/or data systems, etcetera. This is important to resolve at the beginning as it will remedy duplications and added costs.

Special recognition is highly important, as it all plays a role in added costs. Know your room dimension and whether larger size cabinets and/or tables meet your application needs. Larger width cabinets and tables have modest increases in price compared to smaller sizes, it is wise to assess if a larger cabinet will work as opposed to two or three smaller cabinets adding to the same width.


Know your options for, and how to apply, Wall Storage and Shelving

Wall Cabinets and/or shelving are most cost effective p/linear foot compared to standard floor based cabinets.

Wall Cabinets and/or shelving provide easy access to products/tools and also provide a visual of what is being stored.

These same concepts apply to islands and peninsulas as well.

Casework Construction

Drawer Construction

1. Constructed with two sub-assemblies – drawer body, drawer back and inside front are one single piece – the second piece being the drawer front.

2. The drawer front is fastened to the drawer body using sheet metal screws for easy adjustment and alignment.

3. Expanding spray foam is applied as sound deadening material between drawer front and drawer body front.

4. Standard drawers have aluminum wire door pulls.

Knee Space Panels and Fillers █ All panels and fillers are fabricated from 20 gauge cold rolled steel.• Unless design specifications require a thicker gauge

█ Typically mounting flanges on all panels and fillers are 1˝.

█ Knee Space panels accommodate the width of the opening and are formed with mounting flanges. Panels are constructed in various standard heights to fit different openings.

█ Front base fillers are constructed with 4.5˝ high x 2.9˝ deep to space at the bottom to replicate base cabinet profile.• Rear base fillers are constructed the same way but without toe

Wall Cabinet Construction1. There are three available heights: 24˝, 30˝ and 36˝.

2. Top, sides, back and bottom are spot welded to form one unit.

3. Front panel seams are gas welded closed and ground flush for smooth finish.

4. The cabinet sides and back include slots for the attachment of shelf clips to support the adjustable shelves – which are adjustable in 2˝ increments.

5. Doors are double pan construction with an inside panel fastened to the outside door panel to create one piece.

6. Doors without glass have expanding spray foam applied as sound deadening between the door front and door back panels.• Glass Doors are double-panel, reinforced frame, metal construction

same as above with glass held in by door inside panel and glued into place with silicone; doors are tempered 1/8˝ inches thick glass.

• Sliding doors operate on metal rollers positioned at the bottom of the door assembly for easy alignment and rolling action, with a center guide at the top of the cabinet. Sliding doors have stops on inside.

Painting Process

1. Our multi-step finishing process prepares cabinets for electrostatically applied powder coat paint.

2. The units are placed on a conveyor and fed into the processing system at a controlled rate to insure parts are thoroughly cleaned.

3. Complete cleaning of the metal shall be accomplished by the use of an alkaline phosphate cleaner to remove oil, grease and soil.

4. The units are rinsed first by a cool water spray and then a final rinse of deionized cold water.

5. The completely treated units continue on the conveyor through a dry-off oven at high temperature for 5-to-7 minutes to dry.

Following the phosphate cleaning process – powder coat with specially formulated acrylic or epoxy finish is applied and baked on high temperature for 12-to-14 minutes, then cooled to produce optimum coating properties.

There are three (3) standard colors available with more to choose from if requiring different color options or necessity to match colors.

Standard cabinet depth is 22˝ with a height of 35˝, 36 nominal inches with installed surface, including leveling glides. All Eclipse casework includes removable rear panel to access utilities. Total table top depth is 30˝, including a 1˝ overhang (22˝ of cabinet, 1˝ of overhang and 7˝ of utility space). Filler panels close off the rear access space at the ends of each cabinet run.

Eclipse casework is constructed of heavy gauge cold rolled steel, with front seams welded closed and finished smooth. Floor glides are conveniently adjustable from inside of cabinets.

Powder coating provides a durable finish. Drawer and cabinet doors may be finished in a choice of contrasting colors. Cabinets with 28˝ and 21˝ high doors include one adjustable shelf.

The Standard Electrical System for LABs (SES-Lab) is an electrical option that supplies a single 15 amp electrical circuit located on the metal trim panels of the RA Racks. The Electrical components are pigtailed allowing power to be pulled from the top of the upright or from the bottom of the upright or underneath the upright.

LD-4 Adaptable Table

LD-4 Adaptable Laboratory Tables


IAC has been a key manufacturer of steel laboratory furniture since 1991. Entry into the laboratory market was inspired by IAC’s award winning Dimension 4 (D4) Modular/Adjustable workstations. These versatile workstations were originally developed for markets apart from laboratory environments, however it wasn’t long before the laboratory managers and architects discovered the value and application of the D4 adaptability within lab environments.

This Dimension 4 adoption in labs inspired the design of the LD-4 Adaptable Tables that incorporate significant structural enhancements to support standard laboratory table tops (TRESPA/Phenolic Resin, Epoxy Resin, Stainless Steel, Chemsurf and of course standard Plastic Laminate).

LD-4 Adaptable Tables offer the diversification needed to furnish any laboratory environment, with a wide variety of sizes, finishes, shelving and storage options. The LD-4 is perfect for any laboratory, whether as a versatile standalone table, linked as continuous line, or configured as a double-sided island. There are really no limits with LD-4 Adaptable Tables.


Table Top Materials

Trespa® (Phenolic Resin)

The Trespa TopLab countertop is ideal for multi-purpose laboratories. Because of the countertop’s unique properties, including chemical and bacterial resistance, the Trespa can be utilized in analytical, microbial or chemical labs. Combined with these unique attributes, the Trespa TopLab countertop’s excellent physical and mechanical properties provide strength, toughness and durability to insure many years of useful service.

Epoxy Resin

Epoxy resin is the table top choice for harsh laboratory, classroom and research environments because of the material’s outstanding chemical resistance, durability, non-flammability, and non-absorbency

Chemsurf® - Chemical Resistant Laminate

Chemsurf® Chemical-Resistant Laminate is produced for work tops and cabinet surfacing in intermediate-type laboratories where weight or cost constraints rule out slate, epoxy or stainless steel; the possibility of chemical spills rules out conventional high-pressure decorative laminate; or where a trend-aware colored or patterned surface is desired. Chemsurf is also recommended in areas where indiscriminate use of a variety of cleaning agents may be used.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel work surfaces offer a practical solution for high moisture areas, infection control considerations, radioisotope work and/or areas that are subject to fire and high abrasion. Stainless steel work surfaces are made from 16-gauge type 304 stainless steel with #3 finish. The underside of the work surfaces is reinforced with steel channels and covered with sound deadening material. All exposed welding is ground smooth and polished to match a No. 4 satin finish.

Standard Laminate

IAC uses only high pressure postforming horizontal grade laminates. All laminates are comply with federal specifications governing impact, abrasion and chemical resistance (FED Spec-L-P-508H).

ESD Laminate

Resistant measurements are used to establish the charge draining capacity of dissipative hard laminate. All table tops are tested for resistivity.

Standard Overhead Storage Cabinets

Standard overhead storage cabinets attach between the uprights and provide horizontal storage for lab equipment, binders, books or anything needed to be easily accessible within arm’s reach. These cabinets can be mounted on either double sided or single sided units. LD-4 stations with Standard Electrical Systems (SES) must mounted cabinets 8˝ inches from top of upright to clear the top SES duplex (ask your Eclipse LAB Specialist for details).

Standard Sliding Door cabinets have laminate doors. Be sure to specify a color with your Eclipse LAB Specialist.

LD-4 Metal Laboratory RA/Shelving

LD-4 RA/Shelving is adjustable and available in three depths. RA/Shelving is manufactured to prevent objects from sliding or slipping off. Each shelf will hold 75 lbs. of content, evenly distributed. These RA/Shelves are finished in chemical resistant epoxy powder coat paint to match the LD-4 color choices. Height adjustment is dependent on the height of the uprights you choose.

Lab-Grade Suspended Drawers and Cabinets are available for both the LD-4 Adapatable Tables and standard Lab Tables. They are available in multiple sizes and drawer/cabinet combinations to suit all storage needs. Built with same features and care as our Eclipse Casework.
