THE first eco model fromKorea is being introducedby Hyundai as part of itsnew-look city car line-up.

Powered by a one-litre, threecylinder petrol engine the new i10supermini becomes the cheapestfive-seater on the market with CO2emissions below the 100g/km taxfree threshold.

Its emissions are rated at 99g/kmwhich means it is exempt from roadtax for private buyers and alsoescapes the London congestioncharge.

Priced from £9,195 the frugal i10Blue is more than £1,000 cheaperthan its nearest green rival, theToyota iQ – and some £5,000 lessthan a diesel-powered VW PoloBlueMotion.

The three pot engine is new andhas been specifically developed byHyundai to power its newgeneration of eco cars.

Developing 68bhp it gives the cara top speed of 93mph and a 0-60acceleration time of 14.8 seconds,yet despite the statistics it deliversquite a lively drive.

Hyundai is claiming the i10 Blueis capable of averaging 67.3mpgwhich gives it a range in excess of500 miles on its eight-gallon tank.

The car is fitted with a stop/startsystem, low rolling resistance tyresand a gear shift indicator to helpyou work through the five speedmanual box.

In traffic the stop/start systemworked well and there are enoughguts in the engine to handlemotorway work without anydistress.

For a little car it is surprisinglynimble on the open road. It is fittedwith an electric power steeringsystem which is more efficient thanhydraulic set-ups but slightly lesscommunicative.

Nevertheless there is little wrongwith the way the i10 handles and

around town it’s a cinch to driveand manoeuvre.

Outside the i10 has beensmartened up with redesignedbumpers, body coloured side strips,and a new look to the light clustersand fog lamps.

There’s also a new chromeradiator grille and overall the i10 isa snazzy piece of kit.

For a small car it is roomy insideand the boot, with its additional

underfloor storage, is relativelygenerous. For extra space the rearseats are foldable.

The i10 has become a top selleramong superminis especiallyamong private buyers. Under thescrappage scheme it was highlypopular but even last year it outsoldthe likes of the Fiat 500, the Ford Kaand the Toyota Aygo in the UK.

The i10 Blue is part of a newrange which is now priced from£8,195 for a 1.2-litre version to £9,595for a 1.2 with auto gearbox and all

models come with a five-yearunlimited mileage warrantypackage which includes RAC cover.

As small cars go the i10 is smackon for value for money motoringand the eco versions are absolutelycompetitive.

Hyundai will be rolling out itsBlue Drive technology to othermodels later in the year which willsee the introduction of eco versionsof the larger i20 and i30 hatches inJuly with both targeted to come inbelow the 100g/km CO2 mark.

MULTI-purposevehicles are now a farcry from the set ofboxy old van-likeofferings that

indelibly stamped these peopleshifters with the word bland.

These days they mix practicalitywith more upmarket refinementand comfort – most of them lookpretty good too.

The trick is to stay ahead of thegame, something Volkswagen havemanaged to achieve with the newgeneration Touran model whichwent on sale last autumn.

Drawing on the same design seenon the Polo supermini and latestSharan full-blown people carrier,the Touran boasts a lower, widerappearance than the model it hasreplaced. In short it’s a much morestylish car.

Inside, the entertainment andclimate gizmos have all been given anew look while a smart three-spokesteering wheel sits ahead offreshly-designed dials.

The focus though is on keepingthings practical and simple – withthe ability to carry seven adults andfold the third row of seats flat intothe floor when not needed.

VW fans also get air-con, alloywheels, roof rails, a CD stereosystem, ABS, ElectronicStabilisation Programme and sixairbags fitted as standard.

And those wanting some seriousextras can also specify the secondgeneration of Park Assist, a £605

system that not only needs lessspace to perform parallel parkingmanoeuvres, but also allows the carto be parked in spaces at 90 degreesto the kerb.

The tested 1.6-litre TDIturbodiesel engine in BlueMotionform, complete with Stop/Start andbattery regeneration, is said toreturn a whopping 61.4 miles pergallon with low CO2 emissions of

121g/km.I didn’t manage quite the claimed

figure, but achieving near 54mpg ishalf decent nonetheless.

Performance isn’t sacrificedeither as this 105PS engine offersplenty of punch when needed, thesound is well damped and six-speedmanual transmission impressivelyslick.

Good use is made of space with

three individual seats in the secondrow – all with headrests – andplenty of head and leg room, evenfor a centre passenger, while themiddle seat can be folded flat toform a table.

Third row access is easy, you justpull two tabs, but once you’veshoehorned two more kids aboardthere isn’t much space and due tothe floor height it’s a case of knees

close to the chin.With seven people travelling it

doesn’t leave much scope forbaggage; in fact there’s only enoughboot space in the Touran for a fewshopping bags.
