New Waste Collection Service Begins

At the start of August 2012 the new Waste Management contract began with the new service provider,Serco Ltd, taking over the rounds.

There has only been one change to the service so far for those using the blue bag and box scheme.Residents are asked to continue using the existing recycling containers, but to now put tins and cansinto the blue box, as opposed to the blue bag. The blue bag is now used for the collection of paperand cardboard only and your blue box for the collection of tins, cans and glass.

The District Council have run a huge publicity drive to try and keep everybody informed, but I am awarethat not everybody has received the ‘postcard’ informing them of the changes. Please do not worry ifyou make a mistake! If you do, the collection crew will leave you a note to let you know what you havedone wrong and how to put it right. The rumours that you will be fined are simply not true!

I am also aware of ongoing problems with collections being missed on the rounds. I am told this is dueto the new wagons being too large for some routes and, therefore, access problems have arisen.Where there have been problems, I have done my best to try and resolve them. There have beenhundreds of complaints from across the District relating to missed collections and I am assured that allproblems will be dealt with as quickly as possible and the routes put under review to improve theservice.

Clearly there was always going to be problems when the new service was rolled out, but hopefully thesewill be resolved over the coming weeks. If you do have a problem with your collection or your bin hasnot been emptied, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Finally, in October 2012, all households will be issued with the new bins and recycling facilities fordoorstep collection. This will be the final change and I will keep you informed about how this will affectyou personally nearer the time.

I appreciate that the changes are an inconvenience and are causing a lot of problems, but I thankeverybody for their patience with me personally whilst I try to sort out individual issues.

Jubilee Field Recycling Bank

No doubt everybody will now have seen the new containers at the Jubilee Field Recycling Bank. Thenew contractors, HW Martin, took over the service back in July 2012.

3 Village News and Views“From can’t do to can do”

I have recently returned from my annual outing with thearmy cadets. All in all we had 350 young people from de-tachments across the county, and I act as padre along witha colleague from Derby. They gave us plenty to do, asmany of them are away for the first time, and some bringwith them the problems that they currently face at home.We provide pastoral support both for them and the hun-dred or so adults who supervise them.

One thing that impresses me about the organisation (andother uniformed organisations for that matter) is the way in which the time is used while on camp. They learn a whole range of skills which may well prove to be of use in adult life. For all of themjust being away from home and learning to be increasingly confident is a gift that the organisationis able to give. In their training the young people move from a position of “can’t do” to “can do.”

As a padre though the pastoral care tends to be to the fore, we also find ourselves talking aboutspiritual matters and about the Christian Faith. Many of the young people have had little contactwith it, and though we don’t go out to proselytise, we do offer guidance and some literature tohelp them.

It strikes me that Jesus had that sort of ministry. People came to him and asked questions of him.He didn’t offer a “party” line or demanded that they should do this or that. He simply shared hisunderstanding of God with them. For many of those who met him, it was the start of a journeyfrom can’t do to can do.

The short time that I spend with the cadets on camp is a fulfilling experience for me. It is an op-portunity to leave the responsibilities of running the Team behind and simply exercising whatmight be described as a simple ministry of sharing God through the brief contacts that we have. Ifit helps a young person to move from can’t do to can do, then I’m happy.

With best wishesDavid Truby (Team Rector and ACF Padre!)

4 Village News and Views

Since the arrival of the new bins, there have been a number of ‘teething problems’, such asoverflowing bins due to smaller capacity, fly tipping and confusion over what can and cannot berecycled.

I am pleased to say that most of these issues have now been addressed by HW Martin who hasprovided an additional bin to cope with the high demand and the maintenance of the site willremain under review. It is also hoped that the new doorstep recycling facilities, which come intoaffect in October, will also relieve some of the pressure on the site.

Despite the early problems, the new bins do provide the opportunity to recycle more materials. There are now only 2 types of containers:

The first bin is solely for the collection of paper, magazines and newspapers.

The second bin can be used to collect cardboard, plastic bottles, tins and cans, glassand beverage containers (paper based food and drinks cartons).

Items in the second bin are collected together and remove the need to separate your recycling onsite.

If the bins are found to be full or there is a problem with the site, please contact either the DistrictCouncil on 01629 761215 or HW Martin on 0800 121 4879. Alternatively, please contact me and Iwill be happy to assist. Bins should be emptied within 24 hours of them being reported.

If the bins are full, please do not dump your rubbish at the site – please take it home and try thenext day!

WI Report

The July meeting was anespecially enjoyable one whenRowsley joined us for theirannual visit. Mrs Judy Colbygave a fascinating talk entitled“Rags to Riches, a wardrobemistresses’ tale”. She is incharge of costume for theSheffield based Midland Playerswith a very small budget andshe brought along a selection ofbeautiful garments she hadmade from clothes found insecond-hand shops, charityshops, auctions and fleamarkets. Astonishingly, she hadreceived no training inneedlework, but was obviouslytalented and said that she hadfirst learned how to makecostumes from old clothes, curtains and various oddmentsfor her own children to wear atschool concerts. As always, members contributed towardsthe lovely buffet supper whichfollowed and was enjoyed by all.

We decided to take a walkround Elton on a fine warmevening in August led by LynnBurnet of Elton Local HistoryGroup. Even members whohave lived in the village formany years learned somethingnew.

‘Farewell and God Speed Andrew Taylor–Cook and family’

A special service on Sunday 17th June 2012, hosted by All Saints’, Elton.

Andrew, having accepted a placement for curacy training, arrived in Wirksworth with his family just over fouryears ago. He quickly settled in, working alongside and under the tutelage of David and Kara. This was training‘on the job’, so to speak, and he was given pastoral responsibility for Elton and Bonsall from very early on.

Andrew never seemed to have any problems relating to parishioners and had a ready smile for everyone. Wewelcomed him and he warmed to us – now we are sad that he must leave us. We wish Andrew all the best inhis new role and look forward to him keeping in touch.

Just before 6pm on the appointed evening I drove up to the village to see a near impossible parking situation, streams of people heading for our little church, and a palpable air of expectant excitement! We like a challengein Elton and shoehorned everyone in, while volunteers fetched more chairs and warned the ladies in the VillageHall that there would be pressure on the tea urn and refreshments.

Christopher Dixon, on the organ, led us into the first hymn – ‘O worship the King, all glorious above,’ and thesinging just seemed to emphasise the atmosphere which pervaded throughout the evening.

Representatives from all the Team churches shared the readings and the prayers of intercession. Thecongregation listened first to John Spreadborough (Elton) who read from Isaiah 58: 1 – 11. Later the NewTestament reading 1 Corintians 12: 4-11 was read for us by Margaret Fellowes (Bonsall).

Affirmation of our common faith in using 21st century language preceded Andrew’s sermon where he spokemovingly on the spiritual gifts each individual has and how they may be used to help and heal in the service ofthe Lord. He moves on to use his special skill of communication with the deaf and hard of hearing; as he spokeAndrew was signing – the language which he will use in his new post.

As Andrew laid down his Pastoral Responsibility, David addressed us ‘O God, you have bound us together for atime as priest and people to work for the advancement of your kingdom in this place: We give you humble andhearty thanks for the ministry which we have shared in these years now past ………..’ and these words expressedthe feelings of all members of the Team Ministry who were there that evening.

I have to smile at the length of time it took for the Greetings of Peace which everyone shared with Andrew inour crowded church. When we had finally regained our seats we stood to sing ‘Take my life, and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee’We have no doubt, Andrew, that you will put your hands, your voice and your will into the next phase of yourministry.

What a feast was enjoyed in the Village Hall! All the catering and hard work was enormously appreciated –to everyone who helped, THANK YOU.

We hope that Andrew and Margaret will soon be happy and settled in their new home. Keep in touch,Andrew, and we hope to see you again before long.

Elton Jubilee Street Party

On Monday 4th June 2012, Elton Parish Council hosted a street party in celebration of the Queen’s DiamondJubilee. The celebrations did not go according plan, with the foul weather on the Sunday leading to the eventbeing postponed until the following day. But the Monday saw Elton basked in sunshine, the party going aheadand the event being a great success.

The afternoon was full of fun and games for everybody; Bouncy Castle, ‘Splat the Rat’, Stocks, Penalty ShootOut, Lucky Dip, Bowls and a Coconut Shy. Music was provided by John Spreadbrough, a barbeque by EltonJubilee Field and a fantastic Tombola run by Margaret Cooper and friends (over 200 prizes donated!).

Visitors to Elton Village Hall were given a preview of the new Village Map, provided by the Elton Local HistoryGroup, and the Duke of York was open for those who fancied something a little stronger than tea or coffee!

The most amazing site of all was the banquet in the Village Hall. Residents of the Parish piled in with theircontributions of sandwiches, nibbles and cakes for everybody to enjoy. The WI ladies did a brilliant job ofserving up tea, coffee and drinks and making sure everybody was well fed!

It was a pleasure to see so many people from the community coming along to enjoy a day of fun and to see somany former residents coming back to the village to join in. I can’t thank everybody enough for assisting me inmaking the event happen and run so smoothly and for the overwhelming contribution of food and Tombolaprizes. There are simply too many to name individually!

Have your say on draft trails management plan

The Peak District National Park Authority would welcome people’s views on its first management plan for fourrecreational trails used by thousands of walkers, cyclists and horse-riders each year.

A six-week public consultation on the draft five-year plan is now under way, and people have until September17 to give their feedback on www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/looking-after/trailsplan

The trails, owned and managed by the Authority, are all former railway lines with a relatively flat terrain thatoffers easy access and traffic-free enjoyment.

They are:

Monsal Trail, 8.5 miles from Bakewell to Wyedale, near Buxton.

Tissington Trail, 13 miles from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay, near Hartington

High Peak Trail, 10.5 miles from south of Buxton to Longcliffe, near Wirksworth

Thornhill Trail, a short two-mile stretch near the Upper Derwent Valley.

They are regarded as some of the best recreational routes in the country, passing through glorious country-side, rich in wildlife and historic interest. In addition, the Monsal Trail received a huge boost last year whenfour old railway tunnels were re-opened for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders.

The draft management plan was drawn up with the help of user-groups in a series of workshops over the pastyear, plus a Trails Saturday when trail-users were asked to fill in surveys.

It includes action plans for managing the trails and their verges, optimising their benefits and promotingpeople’s awareness and understanding of their setting, history and habitats.

Trails manager Abi Ball said: “Given the importance of the trails to local people and visitors, we’d like to givepeople the opportunity to comment on the plan which is available to view and download from our website atwww.peakdistrict.gov.uk/looking-after/trailsplan. ELTON BEER FESTIVAL

Another successful Beer Festival took place at the end of July. We were delighted toraise just over £3000, which will go towards the cost of weatherproofing the newpavilion before the coming winter.

Its success was due to some really good weather on the day and in particular to thenumerous helpers we had before, during and after the event.

The Trustees would like to offer a sincere thank you to all those who attended, all oursponsors, the volunteers who manned the door, the token sales, the bar, the barbeque, erected and dismantled the marquee and helped with clearing-up the following morning.

Apart from the bands in the evening, a special thanks go to John Spreadborough andMary Clarke who provided us with some excellent musical entertainment during theafternoon.

We look forward to another successful event next year.

LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE

Food lovers are being urged to visit a website which features tasty tips for using leftover food when havingget-togethers over the summer. Derbyshire County Council is urging families to make use of tasty food or leftoversalready stocked in cupboards, fridges or freezers over the summer months. Councillor John Allsop, cabinet memberfor technology and recycling, said: “We’re urging people to check out our website full of great ideas on how to preparemeals using leftover food.”

Some of the recipes you’ll find include:A Quick Use-Up Pizza using leftover cheese and any favourite toppings you might have in the fridge.

Olive Tapenade Toasts which turns leftover bread into something more interesting.

Crispy Chicken Skewers which use a crispy coating made from leftover cheese and breadcrumbs made from slightlyold bread.

For full recipes – and other great ideas for cutting down on food waste – go to the Love Food Hate Waste page ofDerbyshire Council Council’s website at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/lovefoodhatewasteThe recipes are in the “related documents” section near the bottom of the page under the title “recipes for specialget-togethers”.

For lots more recipes for all occasions visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com

Every month UK households each throw away an average £50 worth of food that could have been eaten. Wasting foodalso harms the environment and contributes to climate change.

13 Village News and ViewsUp Ongrill

Two of Elton Local History Group’s three projects are now completed and we are very pleased thatthey have been well received. Many remarks have been along the lines of, “I’m surprised at how muchhistory there is around here.” That’s true for us too. When a few incomers and locals met one Februaryevening in 2002 to discuss the possibility of starting a local history group, we didn’t expect we wouldbe able to amass so many facts and to be still going strong 10 years later.

Among the founder members were sisters Jean Yeomans and the late Ethel Marsden, photographedhere at an ELHG meeting in 2007. It was they who putthe incomers right on the ‘proper’ pronunciation ofHungerhill. As children, Jean and Ethel lived at what isnow Ivy Lane Farm but which was then calledHungerhill Farm because much of its land was near thewestern end of Hungerhill Lane. Nowadays, HungerhillFarm remains as the name of a barn there.Unsurprisingly, Hungerhill means infertile land, unsuitable for arable. A map of 1823 names thiswestern part of the lane as Hungry Lane. However, amap of 1809 shows that the whole of Hungerhill Lanewas previously known by a name suggesting theopposite of hunger, Fillbarns Lane. Fields on the southside, just before you get to Hungerhill Farm, had beencalled Fillbarns since before the 18th century, evidencethat cereals used to be grown here.

An early name given to the part of Hungerhill Lane leading off Moor Lane suggests that food wasgrown in this area too. A deed of 1707 refers to it as Orchard Lane. Perhaps, in the fields bordered bythe present Hungerhill Lane, Dark Lane, West End and Moor Lane, the owners of Holmedene Farm orElton House Farm grew apples and pears, or at least tried to. The latter half of the 17th century wasexceptionally cold; in some years, the ice on the River Thames was so thick that fairs could be heldon it. In the winter of 1676-7 even the Derbyshire Derwent froze. It was hardly a favourable periodfor growing fruit trees at the altitude of Elton. But the fruits of an orchard here might have been muchgreater than a few miserable apples and pears.

In those days lead miners had the right to dig for ore wherever they thought it likely a vein might befound; it didn’t matter who actually owned the land. Not only were they allowed to dig shafts and leavespoil heaps but they could construct a road to transport the ore to the nearest highway. The owner ofthe land had no say in the matter. The miners’ laws, however, did forbid digging in orchards. Anyorchard behind Holmedene Farm and Elton House Farm might not have provided an apple a day butit would have kept the miners away!
