Mission Overview

Main Science Mission-

• Test the effect of air pressure on sound waves.

• Using the sounding device for a comparison to secondary science mission as a flight recorder.

Secondary Science Mission-

• HOBO data logger used to measure internal and external temperature during flight

• HOBO also used to test humidity levels inside balloon-satellite.

• Temperature readings from HOBO data logger will act as a black box during mission.

Non-Science Mission-

• Using main imaging hardware to take photographs during flight.

• Secondary imaging hardware will using ultraviolet / infrared filters to take photographs.

• Photographs from main and secondary imaging hardware will be used for comparison.

Objective: Using Echo ’s science systems to show a direct correlation between the amplitude of a sound wave to the pressure of the air it passes through.

Design

• Balloon satellite measuring 10 by 12cm.

• Optics will require cameras to be mounted facing in the same direction.

• Main science system will be isolated via a tube suspended by tension springs to prevent vibration and shock.

• Secondary science system and other systems will be tightly arranged to minimize contact with vacuum at 100,000ft, optimal use of heating system, and to minimize wiring needed.

• Atmospheric control system consists of a tube system that moderates airflow and removes humidity by venting atmosphere into space.
