Where was the family home where yougrew up and what was it like?I grew up in a lovely semi in Chorley, Lancashire.My parents weren't wealthy, they bought an oldpolice station in the mid-1960s. Mum was cannyenough to snap up the bit of land next to thehouse as well so we had a large garden to play in.We kept chickens!

What is your clearest memory of the house?The house was very old, and had lots of built-incupboards. There was one on the landing where Iused to store all my Enid Blyton books as a child,but up until I was about 10 years of age I could getin there too, and read.

Where was the first house you boughtyourself and what did it cost?We’re still in the house now, a two bedroomedterrace in Birkenhead. It was very cheap when webought it back in the mid 90s.

What made you want to buy it?It was a very reasonable price, especially as there’sa decent sized garden to it as well. This is going tosound odd, but the toilet is really cute – separatefrom the bathroom, with a sweet little sink.

What are the important things you look forwhen buying a house?Nice neighbours. We’ve been very lucky with that.Plus we never wanted to take on a huge mortgage.We’re cat owners, we couldn’t live too near a busyroad and I need quiet in order to write.

Are you a DIY trier or do you leave it to theexperts?My husband struggles to change a plug and I’m nobetter. We tried to put a new washing machine inourselves once and forgot to turn the water offfirst! So I’m a big fan of leaving things in the capablehands of the professionals.

What is the one thing you love most aboutyour current home?It’s quiet, despite being in a relatively built up area.Plus our neighbours are great, we look out foreach other, I think. I always say we live in the mostmulticultural road, a real mixture of cultures andages as well. We all rub along wonderfully!

Theanswer, unless you want toremove all the lining paperand start again, is toremedy the problem whenyou first spot it.● You can try gluing thelining paper back in placewith border adhesive, butthe paper is often too rigidfor this to work. If so, take acraft knife and cut out thearea around the offendingpiece of lining paper. Youmay find that as you cut,more and more of thepaper needs to come offbecause it’s no longer stuckto the wall. It’s easy tosuddenly find that you’veremoved lots of paper,leaving you with a big oldhole, so do be careful.● When you’ve removedthe paper, sand the edges ofthe hole with finesandpaper to smooth them,then wipe clean. You nowneed to blend the hole withthe rest of the lining paper.Do this with a filling knifeand filler or, preferably,finishing skim. This is likefiller but is softer to applyand sand than most fillersand so works well for thisjob.● When dry, sand the filleror finishing skim with veryfine sandpaper and see howthe repair looks. You mayneed to do a fewapplications to blend itseamlessly with the liningpaper - getting the edgesright is crucial. Schemewill give homebuyers that vital first stepon the ladderUP to 2,000 new homes are to beoffered in Merseyside and Cheshirefor people struggling to get on tothe property ladder.

Following the launch of theGovernment’s FirstBuy scheme,£180m has been made availablenationwide to people who wouldotherwise be priced out of themarket.

Under the programme, which is

jointly funded by the Homes andCommunities Agency (HCA) andleading house builders, eligiblebuyers will have to pay just a fiveper cent deposit on propertiesand will be offered equity loans ofup to 20% of the home’s value,meaning that they need only finda 75% mortgage.

Furthermore, repayments onthe loan can be delayed by up to

five years.The completed homes will be

offered for sale via HomesHub,which is part of Plus Dane Group,one of the largest developinghousing associations in the NorthWest.

OK, so your trug is nowbuckling under theweight of yourfattening courgettes,juicy tomatoes, plums,

green beans, aubergines andpeppers - and the chances are someof it will end up in the bin unlessyou’re feeding a bunch of hungryvegetarians every night.

However, don’t despair and don’tlet your courgettes turn intomarrows just because you don’tknow what to do with them. A fewrecipe books may give youinspiration to make a job lot ofratatouille or other veggie delightswhich you can freeze and enjoy at alater date.

As part of its Grow YourselfHealthy campaign, BBC Gardeners’World magazine is inviting peopleto reap the rewards of their labourduring Harvest Week fromSeptember 12-18, with a list ofsuggestions on how to make themost of your crops on its websitewww.gardenersworld.com and inthe September issue of themagazine.

Suggestions include hosting yourown harvest party with the help of arange of party menus on thewebsite, which featuremouth-watering recipes to show offyour home-grown crops.

If you have an allotment, organisea swap shop where allotment

holders can bring their excessproduce to swap for some of yourharvest.

However, if you are reluctant topart with the home-grown fruits ofyour labour, there are many waysto preserve it so you can beenjoying it well into the wintermonths.

Tomatoes can be frozen to use insauces, casseroles and othercooked dishes. Immerse them inboiling water, peel off the skins, letthem cool and then store them inbatches in freezer bags. Justremember, they will be soft whenthey are defrosted, so won’t be

suitable for salads.Alternatively, make tomato

chutneys using a mixture ofvinegar, salt and sugar, with addedspices. Apples, garlic and onionscan also be used to add flavour tochutneys.

Many vegetables can easily befrozen, by preparing andblanching them first (plunging inboiling water for a couple ofminutes and then cooling them iniced water for a few minutes sothey don’t continue cooking), thentransferring to freezer bags. Greenbeans, asparagus, sweetcorn,carrots, Brussels sprouts and

courgettes can all be frozen in thisway.

Virtually every fruit can befrozen, but be warned that when itis defrosted it’s likely to be soggyand sitting in juice. However, itsflavour will not be impaired andsuch fruits are ideally used insauces, compotes, pies and tarts.

You need to de-stone stone fruitsbefore freezing, as the stone willgive off an almond taint. Apples andplums can be sliced, tossed withlemon and sugar, then frozen.

Don’t store any apples ripeningbefore the end of September, as fewof these will keep for long. You’re

better off turning them into puree,juice or dried apple rings. The bestkeeping varieties hang on the treesthrough October and are onlygathered when hard frost hits them.

Prepare them for storage byplacing them in a cool, airy place fora couple of days to sweat out anyexcess moisture. Put them out on achilly evening without frost andthen put them in storage first thingin the morning before they havewarmed.

Lay the apples in trays on a bed ofcrumpled or shredded newspaper ina frost-free, cool, dark place, such asa garage or shed. Pears can bestored in a similar environment butshould not be wrapped.

Other home produce requires drystorage, including potatoes, onions,garlic, pumpkins and wintercabbages. Potatoes should be left todry off for several hours beforestoring in a wooden box in a dark,frost-free shed. They should keepuntil spring.

Parsnips, cabbages, cauliflowers,beets and other roots keep fresh inthe ground if covered in loose strawand plastic before everything freezessolid. Alternatively they can be keptin a cellar, or a dead chest-freezer ina shed, where the temperature andhumidity are constant, and if thevegetables are put in when cold,they will stay fresh for months,although you would need toperforate part of the lid seal to allowventilation.

Onions, garlic and shallots keepeasily for up to six months if theyare well dried in a hot, airy placeand then kept cool and dry, hangingin the roof of a dry shed or garage

There’s no reason you shouldn’tenjoy the fruits of your labour wellinto the winter months.

If you have a glut of fruitand veg from this year’sharvest, don’t end upchucking it out – freezeit, preserve it or findsome enthusiastic vegswappers, HannahStephenson advises

THIS year I grew an aubergineplant in a pot on my warm, sunnypatio and am just now starting toharvest the rich, deep-colouredvegetables which are deliciousgrilled and filled - I’m particularlypartial to grilled aubergine stripswith a topping of feta cheese,chilli and mint.

Anyway, I found themsurprisingly easy to grow,provided they are planted outlate or under protection, becausethey won’t survive withoutwarmth.

When planting out in earlyJune, add a general balanced

fertiliser to the soil but avoidfeeding too much with nitrogen inthe early stages, or you’ll havelots of leaves and not much fruit.If you are growing aubergines in apot, just use one plant per pot,using good quality compost andensuring the pot is no smallerthan 30cm (12in).

When the first flowers appearstart liquid feeding with a tomatofertiliser more regularly. Harvestthe fruits once they reach around14cm long but before the surfacegloss has disappeared. Goodvarieties include ’Bambino’,’Moneymaker’ and ’Long Purple’.

YOUNG Britons havelived in five homes bythe time they reachthe age of 35, whiletheir grandparentslived in just threeproperties during theirwhole lives, a RoyalMail study found today.

A survey of 1,000under 35-year-oldsalso showed that onein 10 had lived atmore than 10different addresses,with some unable tobuy a house andothers being reluctantto settle down.

A tenth of thosequestioned said theyhad stayed in somehouses for a month orless and a half hadmoved out within sixmonths.

MEN and women whohave served in theArmy, Navy or RoyalAir Force could takeadvantage of a

Barratt is urging local ArmedForces personnel to sign-up for anew scheme called FirstBuy, whichis designed to give first time buyersa route to home ownership at thelowest possible cost.

Barratt Manchester is topping upthe offer for servicemen and womenby giving them £500 of furniturevouchers for every £25,000 theyspend on the house.

And the housebuilder has set upa special Armed Forces hotline forany personnel who are interested.

Jason Newton, sales director atBarratt Manchester, said: “Thisinitiative means that first timebuyers now have the chance tomove into a new home with adeposit of as little as £3,859.

“Armed Forces personnel whowant to go to the front of the queueshould call our hotline on 0844 8156196.”

The offer also applies toex-Regular servicemen and womenwho have served for a minimum ofsix years and also to the surviving

partners of military personnel whohave died in service.

It isn’t only the Armed Forceswho will be eligible to takeadvantage of FirstBuy. Anyhousehold with a combined incomeof up to £60,000 qualifies.

Under FirstBuy, buyers will beoffered a loan of up to 20% of theprice of the property, jointly funded

by Barratt Manchester and theGovernment’s Homes andCommunities Agency. The buyersthen have to find the remaining80% of the price themselves. Up to75% of this could be a mortgage,leaving a deposit of five per cent.

In practice, this means anyonebuying a two bedroom house fromBarratt Manchester priced at

£96,495 under the scheme, wouldpotentially be able to get on thehousing ladder with a deposit of aslittle as £3,859.
