RECTORY OFFICE HOURS

Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays,

8:30am 12 noon and 12:302:30pm.

Anytime for emergencies.

Here we are, mere days from Christmas, and we hear a Gospel anticipating the birth of another

child. Mary has received word that her cousin Elizabeth is with child. Pregnant as she is, Mary "set out

and traveled to the hill country in haste." She has recently received the greatest news of her life that she

is to be mother to the Messiah by the power of the Holy Spirit but her concern is for her cousin in need.

Through God's grace, Elizabeth turns it into an opportunity to honor the coming Christ. "Blessed are you

among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb." Yet Mary's example of selflessness should in-

spire us.

As Christmas draws near, there is plenty of goodness to anticipate for many of us. We'll reunite with

family and friends, uphold timehonored traditions, swap stories old and new, exchange gifts, and wel-

come Jesus at the Christmas liturgy. These are wonderful things! Of course, they probably all come with

their own todo list. Shop for lastminute gifts, pick up recipe ingredients, ready the guest room, or pack

your own bags. Mary probably had things to do as well. She had a lot to consider, for one thing. How do

you plan to tell your parents you're pregnant, but no man was involved? When Joseph finds out, who will

care for the practical needs of you and your child? Into what may have been a chaos of questions, Mary

receives news that someone is in need. She goes immediately.

In these final days before Christmas, stay watchful and awake! You never know when God might in-

vite you to welcome, hospitality, and compassion. It might be tempting to reject the opportunity for your

own needs. Follow the example of Mary! If God is providing you an opportunity to love, He will provide

the means to accomplish all your other tasks. This Christmas season, may you too hear, "Blessed are you

who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

sacristy for $2.00 per pack of four.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS

The close of 2018 is just around the corner.

orded in 2018. If the donation is deposited in the bank in

2019 for 2018 or 2019 it will be recorded in 2019. If you

FOURTH SUNDAY OF SUNDAY DECEMBER 23, 2018

Please remember to use our advertisers.

They make our bulletins possible.

Dear Parishioners,

As we celebrate the fourth Sunday of Ad-

vent and look toward the Incarnation just

two days away, we hear the prophesy of

Micah which was written over 700 years

before Jesus was born: “You Bethlehem,

too small to be among the clans of Judah,

from you shall come forth for me one who

is to be ruler in Israel; whose origin is

from of old, from ancient times. He shall

stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the

Lord, in the majestic name of the Lord, his God; and they

shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the

ends of the Earth. He shall be peace” (Micah 5:1, 34).

Matthew’s Gospel quotes this prophesy from Micah

when he told the story of the Magi that we will hear on

the Epiphany. Little did Micah know that he was writing

about the future Prince of Peace, GodHero, Father

Forever, WonderCounselor who would be born on that

first Christmas.

In the Gospel for the fourth Sunday of Advent we heard

the story of the Visitation of the Blessed Mother Mary to

Elizabeth. In this famous passage, we enter into the en-

counter of two pregnant women carrying in their wombs

two aspects of the mystery of salvation. The elderly

Elizabeth carries the future John the Baptist who will be

the herald of the Messiah, and Mary carries the Messiah

himself. Both women have undergone amazing dining

experiences which have brought them to this moment of

encounter. Though separated greatly by age, Elizabeth

and Mary have much in common. Both are miraculously

pregnant, and both come from very humble backgrounds.

Both of these holy women said “yes” to the will of God

in their lives.

Jesus, whose birth we celebrate on Christmas, also came

from very humble beginnings, and he said “yes” to the

will of his Father in Heaven. The shepherds who were

the first people to hear about the birth of Jesus were also

humble and poor. And what was the message pro-

claimed to them by the angel? “Do not be afraid; for

behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that

will be for all people. For today in the city of David a

savior has been born for you who is Christ the

Lord” (Luke 2:1011). Bringing joy, peace, and justice

to the world was an endeavor that Jesus began on that

first Christmas. Over 2000 years later we are the hands

and feet of Christ commissioned to spread the Good

News, the Gospel, and to bring joy, peace, and justice

into the world. It’s a world in desperate need for the

healing touch of Christ. As we gather on this final week

of Advent and throughout the Christmas season and be-

yond, may we experience the joy of Christ’s birth in our

hearts and then share it with everyone we

meet.

Wishing all of you a very merry Christmas!

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

After numerous delays due to weather and an unfortunate

leak which affected the church, the roof project is finally

complete. It cost the parish $79,900, and the damage to

the inside of the church by the organ was covered by the

roofer’s insurance. We also got the carpets cleaned in the

entire church as a result of the claim.
