    What is Admiralty ENCTraining?

Developed by the United KingdomHydrographic Office (UKHO) inresponse to demand from leadingshipping companies, the Admiralty ENCTraining programme covers all aspectsof ENC (Electronic Navigational Chart)use within ECDIS, from loading charts

to maintenance and display. Thisessential programme of training hasbeen devised to ensure that the ENCcan be used safely and to its fullpotential.

    The Future ofNavigation

The United Kingdom HydrographicOffice (UKHO) is the leading supplierof official Electronic NavigationalCharts (ENCs) authorised for use inprimary navigation under SOLASRegulations. We believe that IMOsdecision to mandate the carriage of

ECDIS puts a powerful tool into thehands of seafarers that can mean saferand more efficient voyages, and at thesame time help to protect the marineenvironment but only if the electronic

chart is understood and used properly.

    The Need for ENC

TrainingFitting of ECDIS will becomemandatory in a rolling timetable thatbegins in July 2012. The legislation willbe phased by vessel type and size toeventually apply to almost all largemerchant vessels and passenger ships.

Generic and ECDIS type-specifictraining covering functionality andsystem integration is provided by ECDISManufacturers and Maritime Colleges, however many mariners remain unsure

about differences between the displayof traditional paper chart information

and the ENC on their ECDIS screen.Recent, high-profile, ECDIS relatedgroundings illustrate the necessity forgreater understanding of the chartdisplay, and could have been preventedthrough ENC training.

While many aspects of ECDIS provide

benefits in time savings and accuracy, the potential benefits are highly depen-

dent on proper use. If watch officers

are unfamiliar with the systems in use,

or are confused by the information

presented, ECDIS can become more of

a liability than a benefit. The change

in mind-set needed to shift from paper

to electronic charts intensifies the riskscaused by lack of adequate ECDIS

    training

    Training Format

The Admiralty ENC Training programmeis available as Computer Based Trainingor through an on-site course. Theprogramme is made up of a series oftraining modules aimed at the maritimeprofessional which provide relevantinformation on the generation, maintenance and the presentation of

Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC)data within an ECDIS.

The Admiralty ENC Training programmeis available to all shipping companies, maritime colleges and training schoolsworldwide that wish to provide trainingin electronic navigation to seafarers. Itcan be incorporated into an existing

programme of study or run as astandalone training option.

Training is provided as a comprehensivepackage that includes a full syllabus, course content, student material in theform of workbooks and handouts aswell as detailed guidance and notes for

trainers. UKHO also offers train thetrainer courses from its main site inTaunton, UK.

    Training Syllabus

    ENC What is it?

Learn what constitutes an official ENCand the regulatory requirementsrelating to electronic charts and ECDISand other types of electronic charting. You will explore the benefits anddisadvantages of the ENC against raster

and paper charts and fully understandthe data structure of an ENC.

    ENC Structure,limitations anddevelopments

Understand how the ENC vector chartformat IHO S-57 standard is structuredand how it is managed and maintained.Seafarers explore the limitations ofcurrent standards and discover how thefuture IHO standards (S-100 +) willaffect you and your company.

    ENC - Production,maintenance anddistribution

Explore the processes and issuesinvolved in the data capture, mainte-nance and updating of electronic charts

    ECDIS Overview of themain functions

Understand the internationalregulatory requirements of ECDISincluding the carriage requirementtimeframe of ECDIS implementation.Appreciate the benefits of ECDIS, itscapabilities and also its limitations.Learn from the mistakes of ECDIS

    related incidents.

ECDIS Chart Display -an introduction to S-52

This module enables seafarers tofamiliarise themselves with theappearance of electronic chartinformation displayed in an ECDIS.Understand how the ECDIS displaysofficial ENC data as a system ENC(SENC) defined by the IHO standardS-52. Understand how S-52 definesand controls certain displayparameters and how these can affectnavigation at sea.

    The Electronic Chart inECDIS

Look at how traditional paper chartinformation is displayed on the ECDIS.Explore how charting scales arehandled, how to safely remove chartinformation clutter, how to view thequality and currency of data and whyapparent mismatches occur. Learn

about new chart symbology, viewingchart notes, chart corrections and howto see future TSS implementation.

As well as learning to recognise areaswhere the ENC is based on older or lessreliable data, seafarers will also fullyunderstand how to interrogate theECDIS to gain access to moreinformation and how display settingsinfluence chart display.

    ECDIS Route Monitoringand Planning

Seafarers will learn how to appreciatethe value of correct safety settings and

how chart information is used to setthe automatic warning parameters.
