PreSenTeDBy BehroUzGhorBanIan BSC,MSC,MIeaUST Behrouz completed his degrees in Telecommunications andelectrical engineering in 1985 and 1993 respectively, and thenconcluded his studies in electrical Utility engineering at CurtinUniversity(Perth)in2004.Behrouzstartedhiscareerintheoilandgas industrywherehis rolegothim involved in themaintenanceand repairofelectronicandnavigationalmarineequipment (VhFandSSBradios,Satnav,enginecontrolpanelsetc).hethenmovedtothepowerindustryandwasinvolvedinthedesign,installation,andcommissioningofsubstationsmainlyforconsultanciesandutilities.hehasalsoestablishedagoodreputationinteachingpowersystemprotectionoverhislongtermserviceslecturingatCurtinUniversity,andalsoovertheperiodheworkedasaProtectionengineerinnewzealand.
overthepastyears,Behrouzhasbeeninvolvedinmanymajorprojectsacrossaustralia(Porthedland,Barrow Island, Tamar Valley, Karratha, and newman for example). his most recent experience isrelatedtocostestimationandriskassessmentofmajorsubstationprojectswithaspecialfocusonthesecondarysystems(Protection,CoMMS,SCaDa).hehasalsoworkedasanengineeringManagerandSenior Project engineer on major copper mine projects overseas. Behrouz has also gained goodknowledge in substation design, hV cables sizing and installation, transmission system design,earthingsystemdesignandapplications,andpowersystemprotectiondesignandapplications.
oVerVIewSwitchgear (and circuit breakers) and transformers are critical components in electricaldistributionsystemsand theiroperationsignificantlyaffects theoverallperformanceof thesystem.Thiscoursewilldiscusstheapplication,installation,maintenanceandtestingissuesrelatingtomediumandhighvoltageswitchgear,circuitbreakersandtransformers.
lowvoltageswitchgearwillalsobecoveredandyouwillreceiveathoroughgroundinginswitchgeartheoryandstandards.youwillgainasolidunderstandingoftheissuesassociatedwiththeproperapplication, installation andmaintenance of these critical itemsof equipmentwith an overridingemphasisonsafety.Theemphasisisonmediumvoltage(referredtodayashighvoltage)switchgearwhichrepresentsmostoftheswitchgearinstalledonelectricaldistributionsystems.Thefocusisonair blast, oil, SF6 and vacuum circuit breakers. Case studies covering the main manufacturers'equipment will illustrate the important practical principles. other power system protectioncomponents will be discussed as well to ensure that switchgear is understood in the correctcontext.
Installationofhighvoltagedistributionand transmissionequipmenthas increasedsignificantlyovertheyearsduetoongoingglobaldemandforpower.asaresult,theneedtoensurereliabilityofoperationofpowersystemsisparamount.Powertransformersareamongthemostimportantandmostexpensivecomponentsofpowersystems.Theirfailurecanimposeextraordinarilyhighcostsonplants, factories andutilities of all descriptions.
