Design of a CP standard unit using 3-D software

The shell and tube heat exchanger is a non-red pressuresystem consisting of two separate pressure chambers(shell chamber and tube chamber). Separated by the in-ternal tube wall, two media ow past one another withsuch alignment that, if there is a temperature difference, they will mutually exchange heat without mixing in theprocess. As the picture shows, one medium ows throughthe shell chamber and the second medium ows throughthe tube chamber. The ow through the shell chamber willbe con trolled by bafes such that there is as much cross-ow to the tubes as possible. The form and spacing of thebafes will be adapted to the relevant operational use.Depending on effectiveness, speed and pressure loss theow through the tube chamber will be effected by a singlepass or by multiple passes. With the exception of radiation losses, the input heat quantity is the same as the outputheat quantity.

However, an effective heat exchange can only occur ifthere is a sufcient temperature difference. The greaterthe temperature difference is the smaller will be the re-quired heat transfer surface. The heat transfer performance of a heat exchanger is the product calculated from themean logarithmic temperature difference, the heat trans-fer surface and the heat transfer coefcient. The latter will

be largely determined by the ow characteristics of themedia, that is by the geometric design.

On the other hand, the supplier of heat exchangers musthave a wide application know-how with regard to thethermodynamic properties of special media at pertinentpressures and temperatures. This also concerns the is-sues of fouling factor and material compatibility.

The calculation and design of FUNKE heat exchangers iseffected with worldwide leading programs (e.g. HTRI,Heat Transfer Research Institute, USA) as well as withFUNKE-Software which is already used internationally.

The FUNKE heat exchanger of type CP is a heat exchanger withstraight internal tubes and removable tube bundle whose xedtube-sheet is clamped in between the shell-side and tube-sidedevice anges by means of two at seals and bolts. The movable tubesheet, oating due to the combination of two sealing ringsand a leakage ring between the device anges, protects againsta mixing of the shell-side and tube-side owing media. In the case of leakages due to a single or both selaing rings beingdefective the pertinent media always escape toward the outsidethrough signal bores on the circumference of the leakage ring.

All seals of this design seal against atmosphere.

The tube/tubesheet connections will be produced by appropriate tube rollings or tube weldings in relation to the construction re-gulations, material combinations and operating media as well as

the maximum per missible operating parameters (P/T). Naturally, the internal tubes will be re-rolled followed a tube welding inorder to avoid gap cor rosion.

The connection and guide chambers are available in differentversions, which can be produced by a tube-side one pass, twopass or four pass design and whose selection is effected inaccordance with the standards required but also in accordancewith uid engineering aspects.

Venting and draining points as well as a corresponding base con-struc tion are designed in relation to the relevant tted position.

This heat exchanger of type CP is used mainly as an oil cooler ordouble oil cooler, where the oil should ow on the shell-sidewhilst the cooling water ows through the internal tubes.

This heat exchanger is used also for cooling other uids as wellas air or similar gases with and without any condensable content.

Any operation with gases having a low molecular weight (e.g.hydrogen) is not meaningful due to the type of seal used on theoating tubesheet.
