Demolition of warehouse structure following a catastrophic fire at a tyre recycling centrein Croydon.

Client: Linbrooks Location: Purley Way, CroydonContractor: Deconstruct UK Ltd Completion Date: September 2011Sector: Dangerous Structures

About the project:

Our first objective here was to assist the London Fire Brigade access the fire which continued to blaze under the collapsed roof structure. Once the fire was extinguished, the resultant contaminated debris and waste was cleared from site before the remaining structures were then demolished and the site cleared for the re-construction phase.

Project challenges:

Operating plant to remove structures during the London Fire Brigade (LFB) operation to extinguish the flames and smouldering debris was challenging. Power intakes had to be considered live throughout the operation. Heavy smoke and contaminated residues from tyres had to be managed with the correct selection of appropriate PPE and RPE. Close coordination with the LFB Controlling Officer to ensure safe coordination was communicated between both teams to accurately deliver this challenging project.

Deconstruct make safe structuresfollowing catastrophic fire at a Deptford school.

Client: Linbrooks Location: Habidashers School, DeptfordContractor: Deconstruct UK Ltd Completion Date: April 2011Sector: Dangerous Structures

About the project:

This structure had suffered a catastrophic fire during a construction refurbishment package. Deconstruct were required to retain as much of the structure as possible whilst ensuring structures were made safe over external public footpaths and roadways, and to permit safe access for surveys and the eventualre-building programme. These works took two weeks to safely complete.

Project challenges:

Ensuring all cordons and points of access protected operatives involved in the works and pedestrians external to the works. Removing high level structures from within man riders suspended from mobile cranes. Temporarily supporting un-safe structures to enable safe access. Clearing significant levels of built up internal debris via 2000 litre boat skips into waiting bulk containers. Ensuring controlled collapses do not effect structures to be retained. Managing the environmental effect of the works on the surrounding properties.

Deconstruct to make safe structures inCroydon following devastating riots.

Client: Linbrooks Location: London Road, CroydonContractor: Deconstruct UK Ltd Completion Date: August 2011Sector: Dangerous Structures

About the project:

The project involved eleven structures affected by fires following street riots in August 2011. Numerous structures were left un-safe as a result of the fires and un-controlled collapses. There was significant risk of contamination from asbestos debris and also live gas and electrical services located in the footpaths and alleys. Around 30 families were made homeless as a result of these fires and a number of others faced a wait to re-enter their adjoining premises. Deconstruct were required to retain as much of the adjoining structures as possible and avoid collateral damage following the making safe of buildings clearly in need of planned demolition. The clear objective was to retain and return safe access to adjoining structures while opening this key road into and out of Croydon.

Project challenges:

Working with the emergency services to ensure structures and the general public remain safe throughout. Ensuring un-controlled collapses are sufficiently cordoned to not present risk. Ensure all in pavement services are terminated/isolated during the works to ensure they are not effected by controlled collapses.

Riots leave structures dangerous inRye Lane, Deptford.

Client: Linbrooks Location: Rye Lane, DeptfordContractor: Deconstruct UK Ltd Completion Date: August 2011Sector: Dangerous Structures

About the project:

These structures suffered extensive fire damage as a result of the street riots in London, August 2011. Adjoining structures appeared to be un-effected and so the aim was to demolish effected buildings whilst retaining adjoining premises. Temporary works were designed and methods developed to ensure speedy access for adjoining neighbours to enjoy safe access back into their premises.

Project challenges:

Carrying out demolition from top down from within man-riders suspended from mobile cranes, whilst installing scaffold, designed temporary works was challenging. Clearing materials while aware of potential presence of asbestos and other contaminants was key. Fast track mobilisation and delivery to re-open the roads to ensure safe access to adjoining buildings was successfully achieved.

Deconstruct called to support the London Fire Brigade to extinguish this substantial warehouse fire following disturbances in Enfield.

Client: Linbrooks Location: Enfield Sony CentreContractor: Deconstruct UK Ltd Completion Date: August 2011Sector: Emergency Dangerous Structure

About the project:

Following a massive fire this structure continued to smoulder for almost three weeks. Due to the nature of the content of the warehouse and the fact the structure collapsed into itself, it prevented access for London Fire Brigade (LFB) to extinguish the flame. Deconstruct provided specialist equipment to move collapsed structures, enabling LFB to access and douse the remaining hotspots.

Project challenges:

The removal of fundamental elements of the structure to enable LFB access into the heart of the 200m x 100m warehouse was key. These works were carried out by 25 and 45 tonne excavators with specialist attachments. The works had to be coordinated with the LFB incident controller and involved accessing the heart of the site, removing structural elements and then retracting to permit safe LFB access. These works took two weeks to complete.
