Mr. Kleks Academy
“Mr. Kleks Academy” based on „Akademia Pana Kleksa” by Jan Brzechwa Adam: I am Adam Niezgódka and I am twelve years old.I have been here in Mr Kleks
Academy for half of a year. I was a disaster at home. I was always late going to
school, I never did homework and that is why my parents made a decision to
sent me to Mr Kleks Academy. In our class there are twenty four students and
all their names start with “A”.
Agnieszka: Hello Adam, what dreams did you have?
Adam: I don’t remember, let’s have a look at our sleeping mirrors.
Agnieszka: Oh, what a wonderful dream you had – It was about seven glasses.
Aleksandra: Hi guys! Did you finish your shower?
Agnieszka: Yes, we are watching our dreams.
Amadeusz: I love our morning showers.
Aleksandra: You are right, especially on Wednesdays, when the shower is with
raspberry juice.
Anastazy: I think lessons are about to start.
Amadeusz: It will be interesting to see what Mr Kleks will prepare for us today.
Mr. Kleks: Hello guys, come to me. Give me your sleeping mirrors.
Mr. Kleks: This is stupid. It’s not finished, bad and wrong dreams are going into the
rubbish
bin. Oh, Adam, your dream is unusual, I will write it in my notebook. Come
my boy, I will give you two freckles. On Sunday afternoon we will explain
your dream to all your friends.
Adam: Thank you, professor.
Mr. Kleks: My dear children. I don’t want to teach you the grammar or calligraphy or
any
school subjects. I will just open your heads and pour oil into it.
So please, sit down , it is time to do an ink blot lesson.
Amadeusz: Can we start?
Mr. Kleks: Wait a minute. I will give you the ink. Pour some drops of ink on the paper
and
fold them. Let’s see what you have, my dear boys.
Adam: Mr Kleks! I have a flying boar!
Mr. Kleks: It is hard to say if it’s a bird or a rhino.
Amadeusz: Mr Kleks! We have a beautiful horse here.

Anastazy: I have a squirrel.
Artur: I have a hippo.
Alan: I have an elephant with big ears!
Matthew: It’s me!
Mr. Kleks: Great! I will give you some freckles. You should be proud of your freckles
and neverever loose them. It is the biggest award I give to students in my
Academy.
Mr. Kleks: You look so nice with this hairstyle, my dear boy. Have You believe that I
am
one hundred years old.? But I am really twenty years younger than you.
Adam: Is it possible that Mr Kleks is younger than me?
Matthew: On the second floor there are two beds: one for me and one for Mr Kleks.
They are as small as cigar boxes. Mr Kleks and I are sleeping in those boxes.
Adam: I am not suprised that you are sleeping there but Mr Kleks?
Matthew: Every midnight Mr Kleks gets smaller, until he is as small as a baby. He
doesn’t have any hair or moustache or beard and he goes to sleep in a small
bed. Early in the morning he gets up, puts a pump in his ear and after a minute
he returns to his usual size. Then he takes some tablets to make his hair grow
back.
Adam: That is amazing.
Matthew: It is time for lesson!
Mr. Kleks: Now, my boys I will show you how to treat sick furniture.
Anastazy: Like the sick tram you treated it yesterday?
Mr. Kleks: Exactly. Observe me carefully.
So what about my little table? It isn’t hurt, is it? You don’t have a fever, your
boards are great, you have to be here for only three or four days. Be patient, I
will visit you tomorrow.
Amadeusz: What about this clock?
Mr. Kleks: Poor clock, It hurts a lot! But it will be ok.
Agnieszka: Incredible.
Niesamowite!
Andrzej: Amazing.
Aleksnadra: How do you do that?
Matthew: Mr Kleks can do everything. There isn’t anything he can’t do.
Matthew: It’s lunch time guys!
Mr. Kleks: Put some orange glasses into the pan, add some white powder , pour in
some water, paint it into green dots and at the end, add flames from some candles.
Adam, help me bring it to the table anything like this.
Adam: It is so delicious. I have never eaten it before.
Andrzej: Me neither.
Aleksandra: Excellent, I want more!
Adam: Second helpings please!
Mr. Kleks: I am so glad it is tasty. Remember, the taste of the meal is coming from the
colour, not from the food. Blue spots are sour, green – sweet, red – bitter,
yellow – salty, If you mix them up you can create different tastes. So white and
green and grey gives us vanilla, brown and yellow makes a chocolate taste and

so on.
Amadeusz: Are you not eating professor?
Mr. Kleks: I don’t care about food. I only need hair growing tablets but I only eat
colourful things: butterflies, coloured glass, or I might paint something in my
favourite colour and eat it.
That is enough. Matthew, have a look they are eating.
Matthew: After lunch, we will go outside for a geography lesson.
Matthew: Let’s split into two teams.
Adam: Tell us the rules of the game.
Matthew: You have to kick the ball and name the city or the mountain or the river that
you kick. Ready, steady, go.
Adam: Warsaw.
Andrzej: Portugal.
Aleksnadra: London.
Amadeusz: Tatra Mountains.
Anastazy: Italy.
Adam: Vistula.
Agnieszka: Oh, where is our ball?
Anastazy: I think it went to another fairy tale.
Aleksandra: Where can I look for it, Matthew?
Amadeusz: Should I go to Cinderella or The Three Pigs or The Ugly Duckling maybe.
Aleksandra: Oh, Snow White, good morning.
Princess: Hello guys. Your ball has broken some toys, but I will give you your ball
back on condition that you teach my dwarfs geography.
Anastazy: OK, very well.
Mr. Kleks: My dear students. Let’s go and visit the most interesting factory in the
world.
You can see the most wonderful machines. Twelve thousand workers work
there. My friend Kopeć engineer is a director of the factory and he promised to
show us all places there to see how do people work. It will be a very interesting
trip. Follow me and let’s go.
And You Andrew, go with the Snow White into her tale.
Agnieszka: Yes, professor.
Mr. Kleks: And you Adam go into Mr Andersen’s fairy tale about the girl with matches
and say you are from Ambroży Kleks. Ask about box of matches. Take
a golden key to the gate.
Adam: I was in two schools before but I have never taken part in lessons like we did in
Academy. All the students respect and love Mr Kleks because he is a very
good man and he is not very bossy. Some people think that he is in our
imagination only, like his Academy but you all know that it is not true

White as milk Red as blood
White as milk
Red as blood
Characters: Leo, Beatrice, Sylvie, the narrator .
Scene : a poster with the image of the characters and the use of
color white , red and blue.
Act 1
The narrator: I want to tell you a story of three teenagers and of
how their dreams can be broken.
Leo (the narrator points to the actor playing Leo) is a young boy
like all the others in this world. He goes to school on his scooter
and he is in love with Beatrice .He hates the colour white.
Beatrice (the narrator points to the actress playing Beatrice) is a
very nice young girl with her red hair and her clear skin. She
suffers from Leukaemia.
Silvia (the narrator point to the actress playing Silvia) is the
young friend of both, Leo and Beatrice . She is also Leo’s
schoolmate. She is secretly in love with Leo.
It’s time to give voices to my characters. (the narrator blows
towards the characters)
Act 2 : Leo is talking to Silvia.
Leo: Beatrice is my love. I love everything about her: her red hair,
her eyes, her sweet smell. Can you introduce me to her?
Silvia: There is something that you should know , Beatrice isn’t
well. She’s in hospital. Her mother told me that she is suffering.
It’s terrible.
Leo: It can’t be possible. Beatrice is the starting point of all my
dreams. I can’t live without her. She is reliable, full of joy, like the
colour red. She’s life for me. She’s red like the blood inside my
veins. She’s the air that I breath every moment of my day.
Leukaemia is the white that I hate: the white is like a blank sheet
of paper and without her I fear to fill it. I absolutely hate white. I
love red.

Act 3
The narrator: Leo asked Silvia to go to Beatrice. Silvia lets Leo to
stay alone with Beatrice .
Leo: Have you got a dream?
Beatrice: Oh yes, I have. I would love to dance and play my guitar
but I know that it will be a dream forever.
Leo: Here is my guitar and I will sing a song for you. ( canzone :
Come un pittore -Modà). Give me your hand. I’ll help you to get
up from your bed. Beatrice, we are dancing.
Beatrice: Yes, it’s great. We are dancing but now I’m very tired,
put me back to bed and please go away. I want to sleep.
Act 4
The narrator: Leo’s heart is really broken. It seems that all the
world is falling down and he together with it. He is very angry and
his anger is towards the persons around him. At this point in my
story a philosophy teacher arrives who makes Leo think about
the real meaning of life. Leo calls his teacher, the dreamer, at
school.
Dreamer : Leo, it’s not possible to have a life only coloured with
red . There is also the white and you should realize that. Beatrice
is dying; this is one great difficulty in your life. You should face
it with the awareness that your dreams can have an interruption
but you must go on , straight on the road of your life..
Leo: Why is Beatrice dying ?
Dreamer: Beatrice is not dying. She’s always with you. She will
live inside you forever.
Act 5
The narrator: Silvia tells Leo that Beatrice is dead. Together they
remember their friend.
Silvia: Beatrice will be our star forever. She is that star over there.
She is the red and the white of our life.
The narrator: Leo realizes that Silvia’s eyes are blue in a white
background. A blue ocean emerges from a reliable white empty
space and in that blue is peaceful to go inside . He is not afraid of
white any more. He also thinks he is in love with Silvia and love
never dies. It will last for ages.
Leo : Yes you’re right. She will always be with us.
The narrator: ( points to Leo and Silvia walking away together ) :
my story has arrived to its end. Leo doesn’t fear the white of
empty space anymore and decides to fill the white paper of his life
with the red ink of his emotion. He will become a writer, a
storyteller, who will give voices to his beloved images.

Adaś: Professor, you examined every time using the same rules. The first person, next

The lesson finishes.
Professor: Peter!

our house for few days. I agreed. Supper is ready so he is coming,
Professor: That’s strange. We have to check it.
The painter comes.
Painter: I heard you have a problem with the disappeared door.
Ms Gąsowska : Nothing serious. Can you see the gallery of these old paintings of our
family? Can you paint one eye on one of them? They should be renovating.
Painter: Oh no, I paint only nature.
Ms Gąsowska: What’s a pity. Let’s go to bed, it’s late.

Act 6

Mr Gąsowski: Where is the painter?
Ms Gąsowska: He has gone.

Act 7
Professor: Adam! You are coming back. Great! Oh, Staszek Burski. What are you
doing here?
Staszek: I ‘m on a camp near here.
Wanda : Tell me, Adam. How is going on?
Adam : So fortunately I went to Mrs. Niemczewska house. I helped her to translate the
letter of the French officer.
Wanda: How did she find that letter?
Adam: Well, the false painter asked her for help in translation. I started to spy him and
I went to his secret place. His friends caught me and closed in the cellar.
Ms Gąsowska: That is terrible Adam!
Adam: Do you know who I met there? French who wanted to buy your house. If no
Staszek….
Burski: Luckily we come on time because it was not good with the French. We took
him to the local church and the priest told us that years ago someone took injured man

Burski: We have dug the box here because we though the thieves will follow us.
Adam: Now, we can start to look for the real treasure. Our French officer was in a
living room some time, so we have to look for something there.
Act 8
Adam: Give me a magnifying glass. You can find in a house someone who will come
from Egypt and have never eaten from the plate.
Ms Gąsowska: What does it mean?
Adam: I know!
Act 9
Adam: This house belongs to someone who has never eaten in a plate. It is a stork. Our
French saw that tree from his room. The officer was too sick to dig his treasure, so he
had to hide it here.
Ms Gąsowska: Real diamonds!!!!!!!!!
Wanda: Thank you, Adam.
Adam: Your almond eyes are the most beautiful, more beautiful then all diamonds in
the word.

The attack on Santarém
Adaptation of "The attack on Santarém "
- From "The First Kings / History of Portugal" ( v. 1 . ) - Pages 111-
114 |
Ana Maria Magalhães / Isabel Alçada
scene 1
Moor Historian 1: I present you the Sultan of Morocco, a tall, strong
man, with red beard and white hair, who uses both hands with equal
skill...
Sultan of Morocco: Yes, my dear historian. But the most important is
to say that I try to be a righteous man, a wise ruler who avoids
bloodshed ... but I believe the war against Christians to be fair and
necessary.
scene 2
Christian Historian 1: Never so many Moors together had been seen
attacking Portugal! Thirteen Muslim kings and their armies
accompanied the Sultan of Morocco.
scene 3
Sultan of Morocco: In this spring of 1184, we will leave Seville and
take the direction of Santarém. Prepare the war machines, Indian
swords, shields, bows and arrows. Flags up high. Let’s go!
scene 4
Christian Historian 2: The first attack was against Torres Novas ... But
what the Moors brought in mind was Santarém. The Moorish army
camped near a hill, | they lie down | preparing for the fight ...
Attention… Prince D. Sancho is arriving.
D. Sancho: We have few men for such great army of Moors . Lock the
population in the castle! Raise barricades to protect the houses outside
the castle. Barricades
scene 5
Sultan of Morocco: First we simulate fighting among us. Then, we
attack the city! Get ready ... now! NOW!!
scene 6
D. Sancho: We will endure till we can. The Moors are bursting the
barricade. Hold on...

scene 7
Moor Historian 2: Settle down. There is bad news. The Sultan's son
had an accident, lost his balance and the horse fell on him. A troop of
Murcia was defeated in the plain and the Christians stole all the horses
they could. And worse ... a chief of our army betrayed us and moved
over to the enemy’s side.
scene 8
Christian Historian 1: Sometimes, in the stories of history, there are
lies that become victories truths. Someone released the news, false
news that King Afonso Henriques was on his way to help his son,
Prince D. Sancho. With this "truth", Christian soldiers, who trusted
their king, gained new strength and the Moors, when they heard the
news, were even more terrified. There are reports of friends of mine
that say that the Christian army met D. Afonso Henriques and a great
army that was with him and together they defeated the Moors. But ...
that’s fantasy because on this date the king was already an invalid.
scene 9
Moor Historian 1: A total mess was created! The army was too big and
did not know the area. The chiefs gave orders, but no one listened!! The
Christian soldiers took advantage of this and attacked us from behind.
They wounded the Sultan. The great Sultan of Morocco withdrew and,
seriously injured, died on the road to Évora.
scene 10
Christian Historian 2: At the Moor camp there was massive wealth:
gold, weapons, horses and even men who were kept captive. D. Sancho,
future king of Portugal, was able to defend Santarém.
scene 11
Christian Historian 2: For history also remained a little bit of fantasy:
the participation of King Afonso Henriques in the battle.
Moor Historian 2: From the Moorish side there was also fantasy that
remained in the memory of time: the Sultan, four months before the
battle, just outside Marrakech, saw a funeral passing by and heard
someone say "Pray for the foreigner ... at a bad time ... at a bad time ...
pray for the foreigner." A bad omen ... thought the Sultan ... Had it been
true? A lie?
Christian Historian 1: History is made of truths ... and also fantasy!
Moor Historian 1: Therefore ... we're here.
Christian Historian 2: Even with very different views of an event...
Moor Historian 2: We study the WORLD!
Moor and Christian Historians: WE GIVE LIFE TO HISTORY!!

Here a thousand years
Mariolina Venezia was born in Matera, she is a scriptwriter and a writer;
she wrote “Been Here a Thousand Year” published in 2007 and won the
Campiello Prize. The novel is about the story of five generations and is set
in Grottole, a small town in Basilicata.
We are proud of having MS Venezia with us today, to whom we express
all our gratitude.
Our show is a free interpretation of the novel, so we beg the writer’s
pardon for any imperfections.
The scene is set in Grottole, a small town near Matera, where the
extraordinary daily events of the Falcone family weave together. The
Falcones represent a typical family from Basilicata who has experienced
war, migration, hunger, wealth, public scandals and a lot of love
storiessince the unification of Italy .
After five generations, a century later, the little Gioia takes the train and
runs away from home to forget everything and everyone…

Prologue
Gioia is on the train that goes from Matera to Grottole.
GIOIA : ( Leaning her head is against the window sighing with grief) That countryside
doesn’t
belong to my memories. It’s not the same countryside my grandma used to describe in
her
tales. It seems to me as if she were sitting near the fireplace with all her children around
her.
ACT I
SCENE 1. (At grandma’s house)
Grandma Candida is sitting near the fireplace, she is telling stories about the origins of
her
family. Her children are sitting around her.
CANDIDA (Addressing to her children) My Grandpa Francesco lived in the second
half
of the 19th century when the unification of Italy had just been realized.
MIMMO: Was grandpa Francesco a rich man?
CANDIDA: Oh yes, he was. He was land owner, his warehouse was always full of jars
of olive oil, wheat and barrels of wine. In other words, nobody in his family has
ever suffered from hunger.
ALBA: Mum, please tell us once more about grandpa Francesco who hid his
money and all his jewels at the news of the arrival of the “briganti” (robbers).
31
“The books on the stage during the European school theatre festival”
COMENIUS 2013|2014
CANDIDA: (with sorrow) That episode was the beginning of the end of our richness.
Yes, our grandpa Francesco hid all his possessions in the walls of his house and he
never revealed anybody the secret place . The ”briganti” captured him and
tried to persuade him to reveal the secret , but they were unsuccessful. They
killed him and his secret died with him.
DILLINO: And then? what happened then, mum?
CANDIDA: My grandma Concetta sold the house and the plot of land and went to live
with her daughter and son-in-law.
CATALDO: Mum, tell us, how was life when you became poor?
GRANDMA: It was a disaster for my mum Albina she always told my father…
ACT II
SCENE 1. At Albina’s house with young Candida and Vincenzo the father
ALBINA: ( She is upset and angry) I married you but, I was destined to another man,
nobler than you. I wasn’t supposed to live such a life!
VINCENZO: ( watching his wife furiously) Thanks to my humble and honest work you
can eat every day of the year and year after year…
YOUNG CANDIDA: I find it strange that all you argue about the past, we are the result
of that past and we have to accept this reality. I’m walking the same roads
my grandpa Francesco walked and I’m breathing the same air my grandma
breathed because here are the roots of our family. You haven’t realized all
that yet. We are bound to this land . I’ve met a boy that would like to
marry me. I like him and he likes me. He said he wants to buy grandpa
Francesco ‘s house to live all together as we used to do in the old times .
ALBINA: ( Smiling ) At last good news from you. The wedding will be as soon as the
house is renovated.
ACT III
SCENE 1 ( Candida is always sitting near the fireplaces with all her children around
her)
CANDIDA: ( Pointing to the wall in front of her) It was there that my husband found
my
grandpa ‘s money and jewels. While he was renovating the house, he was
demolishing some walls to build the new ones, he suddenly found a bag full of
money and jewels. Unfortunately, the money had no legal value, and my
grandma Concetta took possession of the golden necklace and earrings she
never took off. When she died she took them with her into the tomb.
ALBA: Please, my dear mum, tell us how was your life when you became rich again?
CANDIDA: My husband had a shop where he used to sell everything from fabrics for
clothing to agricultural tools. He was a good man, he granted credit to poor
people who could buy and pay their debts even after his death. Those were
hard times . We faced the war and then the immigration to look for a job. Yes,
we were lucky and all my children are studying…
ALBA: Yes mum, I like Maths, I want to become a teacher.
32

COMENIUS 2013|2014
MIMMO: I want to go to university to become a very important person.
ACT IV
SCENE 1 At the college in Monopoli Alba meets her friend Gioia..
GIOIA (ALBA’S FRIEND): Yes, I’ve met a boy , he is so handsome….I’m falling in
love with him. He asked me to marry him and I said yes, yes, yes ….
ALBA: ( She is listening to Gioia thoughtfully)
Oh… I’m happy for you but I’m a bit sad because you will go away.
I‘ve found a real friend, you’re so smart and so fun. If I have
a daughter I ‘ll give her your name, Gioia, in memory of our friendship.
ACT V
SCENE 1.
Gioia arrives at Grottole , her grandma‘s town.
GIOIA: (Walking fast towards her grandma’s house ) That’s why my name is Gioia.
My mum met her friend Gioia only once, by chance and she remembered her
with embarrassment. I want to stay with my grandma Candida now I’m ill and
I feel weak . She will give me the right medicine to cheer me up . Grandma,
grandma where are you? It’s Gioia!
CANDIDA: ( Near the fireplace) Where can I be? I’m here ready to welcome you with
open arms and a smile. Sit down near me. I have been living here for thousand
years.
GIOIA: (With a smile) I’ve lived very far away from here. I’ve lived on the road, I’ve
had so many men I can hardly remember their names, I’ve fought battles that
weren’t mine, always looking for my real identity, now I’ve realized that my deep
essence is here in your tales, in the story of our family, in the story of the
women of this family, in the images of a land that existed only in your stories and
in our thoughts.
CANDIDA: It’s true. Our common roots are here in grandpa Francesco and grandma
Concetta ‘s belief in a natural world , where the cycle of life was marked by
dawn and dusk. It was a simple life that considered our own little town as a wide
world with rich and poor joined by a deep bitterness, a world where the rich
feared of losing all that they owned and the poor of starving.
GIOIA: Even if those were hard times everybody had a role …. I had forgotten what
was mine …. but now , thanks to you, I know that I belong to this land , to your stories,
to our family…. yes, sure… I can say I love my grandpa Francesco, my grandma
Concetta and you, grandma Candida… yes… I love my country .
CANDIDA: And I love you my darling (Gioia hugs her grandma)

Narrator:
Welcome to love sigh, ah! the sigh of the heart. Sometimes, a smile wide open, other times
a smile squeezed into a tear. Well… it is love… For brief seconds, I beg you to close your
eyes… (pause) and get ready to travel up to the 14th century… (lights go down, each
character places his/her own prop). You can open your eyes now. We are in the midst of
the 14th century. King D. Afonso IV did the usual, he had the hand of a noble asked for his
son, D. Pedro. The chosen one was Constança Manuel, daughter of a monarch’s descendant
from the kingdoms of Aragon, Castile and Leon. As it was a custom at the time, the future
queen brought along with her a committee with several people, and among them… a
beautiful bridesmaid whose name was Inês and who was a Galician noblemen’s daughter.
Pedro and Constança got married at the Lisbon Cathedral in 1340, though already married
by proxy. (Music is heard – a few seconds of the wedding march – followed by a stanza
dedicated to Constança)

You came to marry love in Portugal

(During the wedding ceremony Pedro and Constança walk hand-in-hand and the other
characters clap and form two queues. The couple goes by in the middle. Once more Pedro
and Inês exchange looks… The groom leaves the stage and the other characters return to
their seats)
Scene II
(After an absence of a few days to solve State issues, Pedro returns to the castle. He enters,
kisses Constança’s hand and his eyes follow those of Inês).
Pedro: How have you been, my lady?
Constança: Fine, my Lord.
Pedro: I am going to spend a few days away to solve a State issue. Order Inês to get my
clothes ready. (leaves)
Constança: Inês, Inês… (looking furious)
D. Constança’s nanny: It’s that girl, isn’t it? The beautiful Inês who came with you?
Constança: It is… and the worst is that all Court realized that. It is said everywhere…
Choir: And so lived Constança… worried about the Pedro and Inês’ love… A love that grew
on a daily basis…
Scene III
Narrator: Ah! D. Constança, Queen of Portugal, without D. Pedro’s love! Maria was born,
Pedro and Constança’s first daughter, and then Luís. After the boy’s birth Constança had an
idea…
Constança: I am going to invite Inês to be my son Luís’ godmother. Afterwards she won’t
have the courage to keep the love affair with Pedro.
D. Constança’s nanny: Good idea. The romance will end and the people will stop talking.

Choir’s first character: But it wasn’t like that… Constança.
Choir’s second character: Luís died shortly after. And the people…
Choir’s first character: The people even blamed the godmother, Inês.
Narrator: Constança’s life wasn’t easy. And her smile faded days after the birth of her
third child, D. Fernando, who would become King of Portugal. Constança died, the Court
mourns… and the people say that…
D. Constança’s nanny: Her heart was broken!

(The characters of the choir bring a throne which will be shown shortly after and in which
King D. Afonso IV will sit)
D. Afonso IV: May my Counsellors enter.
Counsellor 1: D. Afonso, you have to do something for your son.
Counsellor 2: It seems that Pedro and Inês live a life of sin!
D. Afonso IV: So you are saying that I should bring them apart.
Counsellor 3: May this woman die!
D. Afonso: Die?
Counsellor 1: Yes. For the people’s sake… she must die! And the prince must look for a
bride that is a princess from an important Court. My king, you are the Head of State and
you have to think about the State and about reason…

(Pedro enters from the one side and Inês from the other. They meet in the middle of the
stage.)
Pedro: My lady, you are so beautiful! Inês: It’s your eyes, my Lord, that embellish. And your heart that smiles at Love… Pedro: You are the sun that lights up my days! The moon that coats my night with silver… Inês: You are the smile of Love… Pedro: I am so happy to be here with you… Inês: Me too. For you I live and, if need be, for you I will die… (They leave the stage back to the side from each they have entered)
Scene VI Character of the Choir 1: D. Pedro is a widower and D. Inês is a woman not spoken for. Character of the Choir 2: Pedro and Inês lived happily for a while. However, the king’s friends expressed their concerns. (D. Pedro enters. He stays in the middle of the characters of the Choir who interact with him.) Character of the Choir 1: Pedro, the Counsellors will never allow your relationship with Inês. Character of the Choir 2: And your father, D. Afonso IV, will support his Counsellors… (Pedro sits down in centre stage with his hands on his head; he is thoughtful. He blends in with the audience from where he speaks.) Pedro: My chest hurts. What do they want to do with my soul? Do they want me to leave my beloved one? Without her the world spins the other way around. (Sits down again in centre stage) (The characters of the Choir bring a fountain with a heart and a smile drawn on it. They put it in centre stage, behind Pedro.) Character of the Choir 1: Pedro and the beautiful Inês were immensely happy. They lived in Santa Clara, on the left bank of the Mondego river, in a hunting lodge that rose at the site where today lies Fountain of Tears (Quinta das Lágrimas) in Coimbra.
(Inês enters, Pedro gets up and both of them stay behind the fountain)
Character of the Choir 2: Here were his children born: the first was named Afonso, after his grandfather, yet he died as a child; the others, João, Dinis and Beatriz grew as flowers of hope in the valley that opened itself to the smile of love.

Narrator (enters): The king gathers his State Counsellors, Diogo Lopes Pacheco, Álvaro Gonçalves and Pêro Coelho, in order to decide about Inês de Castro’s fate. (He draws near D. Pedro and leaves with him. Inês sits down by the fountain).
Scene VII (The characters of the Choir bring back D. Afonso IV’s throne. Inês falls asleep by the fountain.) D. Afonso IV: May my counsellors come in! Counsellor 1: Let’s stop this sin between D. Pedro and Inês while there is still time. If you pull them apart, the Duke will be free. D. Afonso IV: I cannot kill an innocent. Counsellor 2: But, my lord… there are State reasons that justify this woman’s death. Inês (aside, as she awakes): What is this nightmare? I listen to people crying and death so close… (Falls back asleep) D. Afonso IV: What now? (Gets up. So does Inês. They meet in centre stage) Inês (addresses the king): I am here, my Lord. I am your grandchildren’s mother. D. Afonso IV: Your sins kill you! Inês: What sins? What fault is there in loving? At your feet… I kneel. D. Afonso IV: Oh woman… live. Live! (Inês returns to the fountain. The king sits down in the throne).
Scene VIII Counsellor 1: (Facing the king): My Lord, do not let yourself be defeated by this woman! Counsellor 2: What excuse will you give the realm? Counsellor 3: That you were weak before Inês??? (The king screams; he doesn’t seem to find a solution, he sits down in the middle of the stage, uncertain, incapable of sorting out the situation). Counsellor 1: We will finish this. Let’s save the kingdom! Counsellor 2 and 3: Let’s go!… Inês (aside): Quiet… here I am… till when? I don’t know. I live in this love.

(They approach Inês, by the fountain. She knows what they want and kneels. The King gets up, comes near his Counsellors, but once again he draws back and, now, leaves the scene.)
Narrator: (Camões says, while the Counsellors stab Inês) You were, beautiful Inês, lying
quietly,/From your years reaping a sweet fruit,/In that deceitfulness of the soul, rejoicing and blind,/That
fortune doesn’t allow to last long… You were quiet! But the smile of love died…
Scene IX
(Pedro gets on stage and faces Inês dead. He breaks the heart that was by the fountain. He heckles the choir
and the narrator)
Pedro: You’ve killed an innocent! You’ve stolen love from me.
Character of the Choir 1: My lord. Now is not the time to cry. Draw near that body and pay it its last rightful respects. Character of the Choir 3: Inês deserved other honours! Her eyes are forever closed.
Pedro: They have killed me, Inês! So let them be killed, too. Pull those breasts apart with
your own hands. Rip those ferocious hearts.
(The characters of the Choir and the Narrator pursue the counsellors. One manages to
escape among the audience. The others are killed and taken away from the stage.)
Pedro: Inês, you will always be queen. You deserve to be queen.
(The characters of the Choir help Pedro and place Inês on the throne. They move back.
Pedro nears the audience.)
Pedro: In a last love sigh, I crown you queen, Inês of Portugal. Inês of Portugal!
(He places the crown on the beautiful Inês, sitting on the throne.)
Narrator: Inês of Portugal. Let us bow to our queen. Inês of Portugal…
(The narrator and the characters of the choir bow to the queen D. Inês. Then the narrator
covers her body with a white sheet, with a broken heart drawn on it.)
Narrator: (places back the heart on the fountain, Pedro falls asleep by his side) This will
forever be the fountain of love, amid blood, tears and sighs… of love… Here shall live Inês’
heart, here shall Pedro and Inês’ dream be eternal.

Love . It was love. It is easier to write than to speak about difficult things.
It all started one morning at school. She went to the classroom.
Scene I
Teacher
This is your new friend, Cathy Carter. She went to school in New York. Now she's back
with
her parents to Poland so that’s why she is here. I hope you will be nice to her and help
her in
our school.
Peter
There she is – next to the blackboard !
Teacher
This is Peter , he makes jokes all the time.
Cathy

I can see that .
Teacher
Where would You like to sit? Maybe for now sit next to Jack. Jack , you don’t mind , do
you?
Jack
Noooo ...
Class:
Uuuuuuu…
Jack Karas
I felt all stiff . I had the impression that I fell in love . I wanted to know more about her ,
to be sure , whether I 'm doing something stupid . In addition to daily observations I was
listening all information about her.
Scene II
My friend 1
Cathy, do you live near Colin Mikrus ?
Cathy
Yes, I do.
A friend 2
It's close to me. And do you have a brother or a sister ?
Cathy
No, I don’t.
My friend 3
Cathy! Can you go with us to the cinema tonight ?
Cathy
Sorry, I cannot. I have to go to the dentist , I am scared . And then I have to help my
mother
shopping. Maybe tomorrow ?
My friend 1
Girls, don’t you think Peter is a good joker?
Cathy
I've never met a quite normal guy .
A friend 2
Come on, Cathy.
Cathy
Something happened to your neck , Jack ?
Jack (ashamed)
No, nothing.
Jack Karas
I know that Cathy is cool and I accepted it with great satisfaction . It is probably normal
that
when a person falls in love, he counts very much on the same feeling . So I decided to
fall in
love. But how to do it? I analyzed my strengths and weaknesses, and tried to make a
sensible
plan of action. A dark secret was hanging over me and could ruin my life. Years ago my
parents had the idea to call me Pumpkin. For the first few years of life it did not bother
me,

but as I grew older , I realized how stupid it was.
Scene III
Tadek
Kick it to me!
Peter
Take it!
Mother
Pumpkin, go home! Dinner is ready. Do not wave Pumpkin but come on!
Peter
Oh, well Pumpkin, dinner is dinner. We will have to play without your help .
Jack Karas
I had to convince Cathy that I am cool.
So I decided to develop a good plan falling in love Cathy Flower.
I decided to be a volunteer and write an essay with her. I can imagine – we are sitting on
the bed – books are around us . We are looking at each other, drinking tea and quietly
we are talking.
This plan simply could not go wrong.
Scene IV
Teacher
And maybe someone can tell us a few words about it next week?
Well, Cathy again. What about You, my students? Is there only Cathy in the classroom?
Who
will help Cathy?
Jack
Ok I will.
Teacher
Bravo! So as you can see men are interested in those things too. Very well .
Jack
Of course they are.
Teacher
If so, maybe others will join ? Well, gentlemen. What do you think about the changes
through ages. I think that Peter will help them, right?
Peter
About clothes? I have to talk about girls’ clothes?
Teacher
It's not a shame. Look at Jack.
Peter
Okay, if you like, I will help them.
Cathy
So if we have two volunteers , I do not want to disturb them. They probably will be
great .
Teacher
You're right, Cathy .You often work so maybe let them to prepare it. Jack , You were
first and give some part of work to Peter.
Jack
All right.

Peter
You're dead , girls’ dress !
Jack Karas
I had no luck. I started to prepare next plan. Our teacher invented a picnic .
During the trip Cathy will get tired of the competition and sit with me, and I will gain
the opportunity to show her my advantages. I imagined the car is broken, Cathy is cold,
so I give her my sweater and finally she is tired so she puts her head on my shoulder.
Unfortunately, the reality was different .
Scene V
Peter
Hi, guys, we are playing tag, Cathy is chasing .
A friend 1
Cathy, catch the guys !
Cathy
Colin, chasing !
(Jack falls )
Peter
Get up Pumpkin, it is enough playing in the mud !
( Everyone laughs )
Cathy
Stop laughing! Are you all right?
Jack
It’ s ok.
Cathy
Here, wipe up a little . Take it, you might use it later.
A friend 1
Let’s go to eat sausages.
Cathy
How about You Pumpkin ? Not with the guys ?
Jack
I do not like clowning.
A friend 2
Well, well, well ….. Saint Jack.
Jack
Why not?
My friend 3
Because You weren’t a Saint.
A friend 2
Who spied on the girls after PE lesson.
Cathy
Don’t be so shy. I know that you are not like those stupid boys, I have to sit next to
them.
Jack
And who said that you have to ? There is a free place next to me.
Cathy
Maybe it really would be better. Teacher, I am sitting with Jack now.

Mark
Jack , I sit with you.
Jack
Sorry, but I sit with Cathy .
Cathy
Okay, I'll sit in front.
Mark
You see ?
Jack Karas
After a complete disaster of my plan Cathy completely mastered my thoughts . To move
her heart I organized collecting money at the animal shelter . I knew that she would be
on the organizing committee and I hoped that we would be able to meet more often .
Scene VI
Mark
Cool idea with the collection of money for the homeless animals. I will help you .
My friend 1
I can help you too.
Jack
I think we can handle it as a couple, right Cathy ?
Cathy
Right .
Mark
If You don’t want…
Cathy
Do not be offended with us , after all the most important are animals not personal
ambition .
What do you think , Jack ?
Jack
I agree with you .
Jack Karas
We haven’t got enough money but the most important was that I could meet with Cathy
and we deliver the money to the shelter .
Scene VII
Jack
So when are we going?
Cathy
We ?
Jack
Well, someone has to do it. Maybe tomorrow ?
Cathy
OK. So where do we meet?
Jack
Tomorrow at the bus stop at ten.
Cathy
Very well , I will .

Jack
Yes , yes, yes!
Jack Karas
I was so happy I forgot to say bye , but happily I did it at home.
Scene VIII
Jack
Hi !
Mother
You are so happy today, aren’t you ?
Father
And how about your dogs?
Jack
Okay, we collected more than a hundred .
Father
Good work son ! So mum and dad take Pumpkin to the country tomorrow .Your aunt
has a
birthday and invited us .
Jack
For a whole day ?!
Father
Just the whole day. We go there in the morning and come back in the evening. Don’t
you
want to go to your aunt ?
Jack
I would like to! But unfortunately I cannot, because I must meet with someone .
Father
Do you have a date ? Honey, come here quickly, because interesting things are
happening !
Your son has a date .
Mother
With a girl ?
Jack
No way !
Mother
Well, then with who?
Jack
Well, with Cathy Carter from my class. Our teacher told us to give the money to the
shelter .
Father
With Cathy Carter you say? And is she nice ?
Jack
No!
Father
So you do not want to go to the shelter ?
Jack
And I wonder if you would like to go? Our teacher said, we have to.

Father
And what time will you meet?
Jack
At ten, why?
Father
There is no problem . I'll drive with you by car. It will take us an hour and then we will
go to our aunt .
Jack
Oh, I don’t want to bother you .You drive to aunt and I 'll stay.
Father
Come on ! I'll take you with pleasure .
Jack Karas
And this way the greatest triumph of my life turned into the biggest disaster . I hated our
car, I hated my dad , but most of all I hated myself because I said to my father I do not
care about Cathy. I realized it does not make sense.
Scene IX
Tadek
Does Cathy Carter live here?
Jack
Maybe. Colin Mikrus lives here and Cathy Carter? I do not know .
Tadek
So let’s go we'll call and ask Mark.
Jack
And why are you interested in Cathy Carter?
Tadek
And you do not like her ?
Jack
Me?
Tadek
Come on, we'll call Mark .
Jack
Do it yourself.
Tadek
Hi Cathy, I really like you and I would like to go with you for a walk. ( Tadek runs
away)
Cathy
Hi, Jack.
Jack
Oh, hi Cathy, it’s great to see you because I wanted ...
Cathy
I know you said ...
Jack
No, no , it is not me. It was Tadek . I do not ... you know ... yyyy ....
Cathy
You do not like me and do not want me to go for a walk?
Jack
No .. no .. no ... I like you but ......
