MESSAGE

The performance of Agriculture and Allied sector in Mizoram continues to be critical even though

more than 60 per cent of our population are engaged in Agriculture and Allied sector and continues to be the

main source of livelihood for the rural community. The major factors which may be responsible for the low

output in the Agriculture sector especially farming may account to the still prevalent Shifting cultivation or

'Jhumming', climatic variations, fragmented land holdings, lack of timely availability of quality seeds and

unorganized marketing chain and inadequate supporting infrastructures in the state.

Directorate of Agriculture, Research & Extension has been collaborating with the Indian Council of

Agricultural Research and other various Research stations in the country and has been promoting innovative

Agricultural technologies by conducting On Farm Testing (OFT) and Front Line Demonstration (FLD) to

find out suitable technologies that are location-specific and subject them to refinement as per the local

requirements. These are then disseminated for large scale adoption to boost up the level of production.

Realizing the potentials of Organic Farming in the State, farmers are being organized into FIGs with

the final aim to federate into Famer’s Producer Organizations (FPO). Crop specific organic production

clusters are also being identified to promote organic brand for creation of sustainable organic market

linkages.

I feel happy to place on record my appreciation of the efforts made by the Officers and staff of the

Directorate of Agriculture, Research & Extension in bringing out this e-Book for 2019-2020.

I am sure this report will be useful for policy makers, research organizations and all other

Brief introduction of the Department

To formulate need based state specific research programme in Agriculture and Allied

sector, a separate Directorate of Agriculture, Research & Extension was established by bifurcating

it from Directorate of Agriculture & Minor Irrigation during 2001-2002 vide Government of

Mizoram order No.A.11018/1/2001-AGR dated 01.10.2002 to coordinate with various

Agricultural Research Institutes to refine, assess and transfer proven technologies to the farmers.

The allocations of business assigned for Directorate of Agriculture (Research & Extension) at the

initial year of establishment are:

The Agriculture sector is important for food security, employment generation and

economic growth. Modern agriculture is knowledge-based, in which education at all levels,

particularly higher education has an important role. New technologies are needed to break yield

barriers, utilize inputs more efficiently and diversify to more sustainable and higher value

cropping patterns.

The major activities of Directorate of Agriculture (Research & Extension) is mainly

focussed on development of Agriculture and Allied sectors in a holistic manner with a vision of

doubling Farmers Income by ensuring farmers’ access to skills, technologies to ensure

quantifiable improvement in production and productivity, increasing returns to farmers from

Agriculture and Allied sectors and to reduce yield gap with focused interventions.

With the introduction of new schemes and new initiatives by the Central Government and

State Government, the extend of responsibilities and assignment of Directorate of Agriculture

(Research & Extension) is being expanded each year. Directorate of Agriculture, Research &

Extension is presently implementing four (4) Centrally Sponsored Schemes and two (2) Central

sector schemes in addition to the on-going normal state programme as below:

Achievements during 2019-2020:

1. Crop Improvement:

i. Development of State crop variety:

Directorate of Agriculture, Research & Extension and Indian Council of Agricultural

Research, Mizoram Centre, Kolasib, initiated collection and characterization of Local Germplasm

of French Bean from different Districts of Mizoram since 2005 to identify the potential local

cultivars for release as state variety. Among all the local pole-type accessions collected, the yield

performance of the purple coloured French Bean (Code No. MZFB-48) was found to be superior

in the overall performance.

The State Seed Sub-Committee for Agricultural and Horticultural crops of Mizoram in its

meeting held on 26th January, 2019 has recommended release of this variety for Mizoram State

variety. For the first time in Agriculture Department, Mizoram local landrace of French Bean

variety (Code No. MZFB-48/IC – 0611106) named “Zorin Bean” was released as State Variety

by the Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture, Government of Mizoram.

It has yield potential of 109-137 quintal of tender pod/ha under normal condition. This

variety is recommended for upland, medium and low land with suitable irrigation system. The

pods are purple in coloured which are a good source of anthocyanin. The plant height ranges from

210 – 250 cm, immature, tender and fresh pod contains anthocyanins 7.0 – 7.25 mg/100 kg weight

i.e almost 16 fold more as compared to green podded ones. Large scale seed multiplication of this

particular variety is being carried out at Departmental Farms and Farmers Field and action is

initiated for Notification of this Variety at National Level through All India Co-ordinated

Research Project on Vegetable.

ii. Development of local landraces of Maize crops for State varieties:

Maize is one of the most popular Cereals grown in Mizoram and there are several local

land races of different types which are cultivated mostly for table purpose every year. Unlike

other Maize varieties found in other states, local landraces of Maize found in Mizoram have

distinct taste and characters. Extensive survey on exploring regional biodiversity reported a wide

diversity of Maize in Mizoram. Characterizations of these local maize landraces are essential for

initiating the grain quality research and for on-farm local germplasm conservation. There are

traditionally three broad groups of maize lines in Mizoram viz. (a) bold grain maize lines, suitable

for flour or feed preparation are known as Mimpui (b) Mimban had small cob sticky maize lines

for local consumption as food and (c) Puakzo was referred to the slender type hard grain cobs

having popping properties. A detail of the collection sites of Maize landraces in Mizoram is given

Multilocational trial is being conducted at different Districts to evaluate the performance

of different Maize collections in collaboration with ICAR for NEH, Mizoram Centre, Kolasib and

KVKs. Attempt is being made to release maximum number of these local accessions for State

variety.

2. Agriculture Education

i. Upgradation of Integrated Training Centre (ITC), Hnahthial from 2 years Basic

Agriculture Training certificate course to 2 years Diploma Course – School of

Agricultural Sciences.

To provide skills and education in basic Agriculture and allied disciplines,

Agriculture Department established Integrated Training Centre (ITC) during 1981. The initial

mandated activities and objectives for establishment of ITC, Hnahthial was to impart theoretical

and practical training to in-service officers and staff from Agriculture and allied Departments who

have joined Government service without having adequate pre-training and exposure in the field of

basic Agriculture science and allied subjects. The present courses offered at ITC comprise of 6

different subjects namely Agronomy, Plant Protection, Soil Science, Horticulture, Extension

Science and Animal Science. This two (2) years course aims at providing knowledge about basic

Agriculture knowledge to the students.

Looking at the advancement of Agricultural Technologies, it was felt necessary to revise

and upgrade the existing curriculum and syllabus from 2 years Basic Agriculture Training

Certificate Course to 2 years Diploma Course in Agricultural Science by addition of more

advance courses with more practical oriented syllabus with an aim to produce better quality

skilled manpower for promotion of self-employment and entrepreneurship among the present

generation of rural youth in Mizoram.

The Council of Ministers in its meeting held on 8th November, 2019 approved ITC

upgradation to 2 years Diploma course in Agricultural Science. Accordingly, the Government of

Mizoram issued Notification vide. No. A. 33025/1/2012- AGR Dated- 9.01.2020 for up

gradation of Integrated Training Centre, Hnahthial from 2-year Certificate Course in Basic

Agriculture Training (BAT) to School of Agriculture Sciences (2-year Diploma in Agricultural

Sciences). The revised syllabus will consist of 12 subjects with a total credit of 52 hrs in theory

and 28 hrs in practical.

ii. Research Studies under NEDFI-TEDF

During 2019-20, Directorate of Agriculture, Research & Extension submitted Research

studies proposal entitled “Study on Scope & Prospect of Oil Seeds and Coarse Cereals cultivation

in Mizoram with special emphasis to Emerging Market Opportunities, Value Chain Addition and

Supply chain Management” for funding under TEDF- NEDFI. Among several research studies

proposed from other parts of North Eastern states, the 23rd Executive Committee of the Techno

Economic Development Fund (TEDF) held on 21st June, 2019 approved only two (2) proposals

submitted and the proposal submitted by Directorate of Agriculture (R&E) was approved for an

outlay of Rs.100.00 lakh. To conduct the research works in Mizoram, NEDFI have already

shortlisted 6 Firms and selection of Firm will be finalized soon. The research finding of this study

is expected to help the Department in formulation of action plan and in identification of Gaps.

3. Infrastructure Development

i. Establishment of OP-12 Bio-fertilizer Production Unit for sustainable Agriculture

under in Mizoram under the State Flagship Programme – SEDP.

To promote Integrated Nutrient Management and to address the indiscriminate use of

synthetic fertilizers, Directorate of Agriculture (R&E) prepared project proposal entitled

“Establishment of OP-12 Bio-fertilizer Production Unit for sustainable Agriculture in Mizoram”

at Neihbawi, Sihphir under the State Flagship Programme - Socio-Economic Development

Programme (SEDP) for implementation with Department of Biotechnology, Mizoram University

in collaboration with Council for Scientific and Industrial Research - North East Institute of

Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Jorhat. A sum of Rs. 125.31 lakh was approved by

Government of Mizoram during 2019-20 for implementation of this project for a period of three

years (2019-20 to 2021-22). Preparation for ground works for construction of the laboratory

building is already started and procurement of laboratory equipments is underway. With this

project, it is expected to produce talc based Bio-fertilizers for all types of soils of Mizoram for

which CSIR-NEIST technology will be used. It is also expected to collect and identify maximum

number of Plant Growth promoting rhizobacteria from different parts of Mizoram.

ii. Biological Control Laboratory under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund

(RIDF) -NABARD.

The indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides has been causing wide spread environmental

pollution, resistance, resurgence of insect pests and is impacting food safety. To address the

indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides and to ensure availability of bio-agents in pest

management, a project proposal for “Establishment of Biological Control Laboratory at Lengpui,

Mamit District” was submitted under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund- XXV (RIDF-

XXV) during 2019-20 targeting mass production of different predators, parasitoids and other bio-

control agents and biopesticides. The project proposal get approval from NABARD Headquarter,

Chennai and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Mizoram

Regional Office has conveyed sanction of loan amounting to Rs. 250.56 lakh from the total

Financial Outlay during 2019-20 and Rs. 13.19 lakh is to be contributed by the State Government.

Proposal for fund allocation is submitted to Finance Department, Government of Mizoram and it

is expected that with this project, many farmers will be able to adopt Integrated Pest Management

for controlling of crop pests which will reduce indiscriminate application of pesticides.

i. National Level Workshop on Fall Armyworm Management collaboration with

ICAR- Indian Institute of Maize Research (ICAR-IIMR) Ludhiana, Punjab ICAR-

National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAIR), Bengaluru and ICAR

for NEH, Mizoram Centre, Kolasib

One Day Workshop on Scientific Maize Cultivation in North East India at Aizawl was

organized with the initiative of ICAR- Indian Institute of Maize Research, Ludhiana, Punjab,

ICAR- National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAIR), Bengaluru and ICAR for

NEH, Mizoram Centre, Kolasib in collaboration with Directorate of Agriculture (Research &

Extension), Government of Mizoram in which the Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture graced the

programme as a Chief Guest. This programme was organized keeping in view the serious

problems faced by Mizoram Farmers due to the rapid outbreak of Invasive pests of Maize – Fall

Army Worm during 2019. The programme was attended by Several Extension workers and

Officers of the State Agriculture Department and scientists from KVKs in which ICAR Scientists

have demonstrated Integrated Pest management for the management of Fall Armyworm. They

also demonstrated Hybrid Maize Seed production and the potential of Sweet Corn and Baby Corn

cultivation for improvement of rural livelihood for doubling farmers’ income in Mizoram through

power point presentation.

ii. Training Attended

As requested by the Hon’ble Agriculture Minister, Government of Mizoram, ICAR-

National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAIR), Bengaluru have organized 5 days

Training programme for Officers of Agriculture Department, Government of Mizoram on the

topic Integrated Management Fall Army Worm and two officers have attended the programme.

5. Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region

(MOVCD-NER):

Realizing the potential of organic farming in the North Eastern Region of the country

Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare has launched a Central Sector Scheme entitled

“Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region” for implementation in the

states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and

Tripura, during the 12th plan period. The scheme aims at development of certified organic

production in a value chain mode to link growers with consumers and to support the development

of entire value chain starting from inputs, seeds, certification, to the creation of facilities for

collection, aggregation, processing marketing and brand building initiative.

Directorate of Agriculture (Research & Extension) being the Nodal Department in the

State have started “Mission Organic Value Chain Development (MOVCD- NER) for promotion

of Organic Farming in Mizoram which is Central Sector Scheme in 5 districts of Mizoram.

During the year 2019-20, the scheme has covered 7000 ha involving 6000 Nos. of farmers and

since the time of inception i.e. 2017 onwards till 2019, the scheme has covered 13,000 hectares,

involving 14,104 numbers of Organic farmers and initiate formation of 13 nos. of Farmer

Producer Organization (FPO) and 1 No. of Farmer Producer Company (FPC). The scheme is

looking after cultivation of selected high valued crops such as Turmeric, Chillies, Ginger and Tea

on cluster approach. The main approach of the scheme is market oriented farming and the

Department is working alongside with other State Department, Companies and Agencies. In

Organic Certification, most of the clusters have been awarded Organic Scope Certification (C2)

and they are in the C2 and C3 stage of Certification.

Achievement under MOVCD- NER during 2019-20.

The development of organic value chain under MOVCD-NER scheme has seen many

positive changes since its inception in Mizoram i.e. 2017. 14 FPOs were formed and one (1) FPO

i.e. Reitlang Organic Farmers Producer Company was upgraded into Farmers Producer Company.

The total area covered is 7000 hectares where 8104 farmers are mobilised, these organic farmers

are grouped into 239 FIGs. To replace subsistence farming/Jhum into local resource based, self-

sustainable, high commercial organic enterprise – Mizo Chilli, Turmeric, Ginger and Tea are

selected under this scheme. C2 (Scope Certificate) was issued for all the registered organic

clusters under MOVCD-NER Phase-I and it is expected C1 (Scope Certificate) will be issued for

MOVCD-NER Phase-II organic clusters. It is estimated that as much as Rs.1253.323 lakh worth

of farm produces was sold during 2018-19 by organic farmers.

It is also estimated 3000 MT of Mizo Chilli (Fresh), 16,000 MT of Ginger, 17,000 MT of

Turmeric (fresh) and 500 qtl. of Made Tea will be produced during 2019-20.

Phase-II of MOVCD-NER is being implemented from 2019 as extension of organic

cluster or identifying new cluster within the existing Farmer Producer Organizations so as to

develop economically viable and to create a self-sustainable market linkage by FPOs. An area of

6,000 Ha have been selected involving 6,000 farmers.

i. Service Provider/Certifying Agency/Entrepreneurs : Mission Organic Mizoram have

engaged different companies/entrepreneurs for the success of the scheme at different

levels as shown below:

a) Clover Organic Pvt. Ltd., Pritam Road, Dehradun as Service Provider of ICS

management, documentation, training of farmers, etc.

b) Ecocert India Pvt.Ltd., Gurgaon, Haryana as an Organic Certifying Agency

c) State Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute (SAMETI),

Mizoram as Resource Institute for all FPOs/FPCs

d) Angel Business Promoters of Mizoram, Zarkawt, Aizawl as Service Provider to

develop market linkage, preparation of business plan, upgradation of FPOs/FPCs

e) One Organic Partnership, Zarkawt, Aizawl to establish Integrated Processing Unit,

brand promotion, advertisement, processing, packaging, branding, etc.

ii. Organic Youth Group: The working age of farmers in the village is increasing as more

and more youth move to bigger towns and Aizawl city in search of aspirational jobs.

Members of Farmers Organisation under the scheme are in their late 30’s and above. This

has made the implementation of an internet based electronic services (TraceNet) difficult

and moreover made the future sustainability of the organic business uncertain.

We suggested the creation of youth group to attract the youth and bring more

talents who could understand latest technology and business of the day. This was

implemented at Reiek Block Turmeric Grower Society and West Phaileng Block Chillies

Grower Society.

They had already organized post-harvest management training on organic farming

and compost making training. Many young aspiring farmers and future agriculture

entrepreneurs attended these training sessions. One of the Office Bearers of the Youth

Group has become one of the Executive Members of the FPO to bring in young and fresh

minds and also to ensure the sustainability of the organic business initiative.

There is a plan to form Youth Group for all the 14 FPOs.

iii. Primary Processing for Turmeric Growers: The three organic turmeric FPOs had

procured Turmeric Boiler with a capacity of 10 Ton per day and Turmeric Polisher with a

capacity of 800 kg per batch to enable themselves to run primary processing at their

village collection centres. This should enable them to add value to their produce and get

higher return for their venture. The three FPOs are Reiek Block Turmeric Grower, FPO

Turmeric Group, Kolasib and Organic Turmeric & Mizo Chilli Producer Society, Tlabung.

iv. Development of Organic Tea as new crop under MOM: Tea has been selected in order

to develop a new organic product that could be branded and priced as a premium product

under MOM. A tea producing region has been identified in Mizoram that covers 4 villages

namely Darzo, Lungleng South, Muallianpui and South Vanlaiphai. This region started

growing tea in the late 1920’s. Lungleng was the first tea growing village and it had spread

to other surrounding villages.

Darbilhi Tea Processing Unit was commissioned on 14th September, 2018. Organic

Orthodox Tea will be produced and 320 kg made tea can be produced per day. It is

proposed to install Green Tea processing machine.

Since the operations and the business will be in the ‘small tea growers’ category,

the main focus will be in the ‘Speciality Tea’ segment. Darzo tea brand is already tested

and marketed in Mizoram.

v. Organic Retail Point: Angel Organic Point, a retail outlet solely for organic products and

produces from farms has been opened in a prime market area of Zarkawt in Aizawl. The

retail shop was opened on 1st August 2018. Organic products from India and local

products from One Organic Partnership and fresh organic vegetables from farmers under

MOM are sold at the Angel Organic Point.

vi. Primary Collection Centre and Solar Drying Tunnel: All the FPOs are building

collection point for primary collection of organic produce in their area. Some of the FPOs

have also procured and installed Solar Tunnel Dryer unit. 25 units have already been

installed for all Chilli FPOs. Drying of organic produce at primary level is very important

in post-harvest management and in a tropical humid region like Mizoram.

Reiek FPO has acquired land for the primary processing unit and work has been

going to construct working shed. Likewise, West Phaileng FPO purchased farm land for

organic cultivation and land with Phaileng town for collection point and primary

processing. In Champhai the FPO has leased land and go-down in the Government

Industrial Estate at Zote for collection point, drying and primary processing.

vii. Products Developed under MOM : Different products developed under MOM are

(1) Hmarcha Um (Traditional Mizo Chilli pickle).

(2) Hmarcha Hmui (Mizo Chilli roasted & Crushed).

(3) Ginger Powder.

(4) Ginger Flake.

(5) Turmeric Powder.

viii. Farmers Business Network of Mizoram (FBNM): FBNM has been formed to facilitate

trading of organic produce under MOM and to act as aggregator. Care has been taken to

build trust in developing business and trade between the farmers, FPOs and buyers from

all over India and even abroad. It has been identified that buyers from outside Mizoram

would need someone to ensure quality and quantity of their traded goods and products.

ix. Trade Agreement: FPOs have signed Trade Agreement with NERAMAC, Guwahati

and Cool Revival, Kolkata to export ginger and it is proposed to sign trade agreement

with Big Basket, New Delhi.

Among the Farmer Producer Organization already registered under MOVCD, Reitlang

Organic Producer Company Limited (ROPCO Ltd), an organic farming company which was

initially set up by turmeric growers of Reiek and registered as Farmer Producer Organization

(FPO) was incorporated as a company on 17th July, 2019. The company is solely managed by

turmeric growers of Reiek and adjoining three other villages and has about 400 shareholders. The

company launched two products - organic turmeric powder in poly packs and organic turmeric

capsules.

6. National Food Security Mission - Tree Borne Oilseeds (NFSM- TBO)

National Food Security Mission – Tree Borne Oilseeds (NFSM-TBO) is a Centrally

Sponsored Scheme where funding pattern is 90:10. It envisages increase in production of

vegetable oils sourced from oilseeds, oil palm and TBOs Under the scheme, the total area under

Olive plantation since the time of inception i.e. 2016 to 2020 is 404 ha. in 4 villages namely-W.

Lungdar, Reiek, Ailawng and Sihfa and during 2019-20, the total area covered under Olive is 74

hectares. Different Olive varieties viz., Arbequina, Barnea, Cartina, Picual, Korneiki and

Picholine are cultivated.

7. Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA).

The centrally sponsored Scheme “ Support to State Extension Programmes for extension

Reforms” commonly known as ATMA is an on-going scheme being implemented since 2005-

2006 in 4 Districts of Mizoram Viz. Aizawl, Champhai, Kolasib and Lunglei Which was extended

to the other four Districts viz. Lawngtlai, Mamit, Siaha and Serchhip since 2008-2009. ATMA is

the mainstream extension mechanism in Agriculture and allied entrusted by Ministry of

Agriculture, Govt. of India. ATMA reach out to farmers of every corner of Mizoram by

conducting different activities viz. Trainings, Exposure visit, Demonstration, Farmers Scientist

Interaction, Kisan Gosthis etc.,120961 numbers of farmers have attended the activities since

implementation of the scheme. Since the extension delivery was oriented towards group approach

catering to the location specific requirement of the farmers, ATMA reach out to the farmers by

forming Farmers Interest Group in all the blocks of Mizoram and Gender concerns have been

given adequate emphasis under ATMA by forming Women Food Security Group.

Importation of viable pig breeds for pig farmers under ATMA Aizawl District in

PPE Mode

ATMA Aizawl District in collaboration with some pig farmers in and around Aizawl city

in Public Private Partnership (PPE) mode imported 33 nos. of piglet consisting of 5 viable pig

breeds from Siliguri, West Bengal. The importation process was carried out in two phases :

1. Identification and selection of good piggery farm; maintaining good quality breeds and

healthy pigs:

Conducted during 7th - 9th Sept, 2019 in and around Siliguri where good stocks are

expected to get as per information collected from Pig farmers Association platform like

Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram. After visiting and interaction with different farms and

owners, Mr. Siddarth Rai’s Alpine Piggery Farm established in PPE mode with State Vety

Department, Govt. of West Bengal was selected for the purpose. The whole programme was

organised by ATMA Aizawl District under Inter-state Training & Exposure visit programme

for Piggery farmers.

2. Transportation of pigs:

After obtaining permission for import of pigs from Govt. of Mizoram, the piglets were

transported by truck during 3rd - 10th February, 2020. The cost of piglets and their

transportation is shared by the farmers while the travelling expenditure is met from the

contribution made by the farmers and ATMA Aizawl District under Interstate- Exposure Visit

programme.

The imported breeds are Large white Yorkshire, Landrace, Duroc, Hampshire and

Berkshire.

8. State Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute (SAMETI).

SAMETI has been set up under Support to State Extension Programme for Extension

Reforms Scheme under the umbrella of National Mission on Agriculture Extension &

Technology –Sub Mission on Agriculture Extension (SMAE).State Agricultural Management and

Extension Training Institute is an autonomous state level Institute with a mandate of conducting

capacity building programmes for Extension Functionaries in the State. Training courses are

organized on Agricultural Technology, Extension Management, Gender mainstreaming,

Extension Reforms, Human Resource Management and Information Technology. SAMETI also

aims to provide extension management input for extension functionaries of Agriculture and Line

Departments. SAMETI facilitates infrastructure to conduct workshops and reviews.

For the year 2019 - 2020 a total number of 20 training programmes were proposed.

However, 18 training programmes were given. An amount of Rs. 7, 56,000 was received from

iii. Post Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Extension Management (PGDAEM)

National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE) has launched one-

year Post-Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Extension Management (PGDAEM) programme for

the public extension functionaries in distance learning mode in 2007. The programme is

sponsored by Dept. of Agriculture and Cooperative, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India.

SAMETI is looking after PGDAEM at state level under the guidance of MANAGE. During 2019-

20, 9 candidates have enrolled as the 12th Batch and 8 candidates successfully completed the

course.

was successfully conducted and completed on December, 2019.

5. MOU signed with MANAGE, Hyderabad on 28th August 2019 for SAMETI to act as Nodal

Training Institute for conducting AC&ABC programmes (Agri Clinics and Agri Business

Centres).

6. The Director, SAMETI, Mizoram has been appointed as a National Facilitator since 10th

October, 2019 by MANAGE, Hyderabad for a period of 1 year.

Achievement & Success Stories of different KVKs during 2019-20

i. Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA) Project

In Mizoram, ARYA Project is implemented by KVK, Lunglei District. Different

enterprises selected under this Project are poultry, piggery, mushroom and bee keeping. Under

this project, the youths are provided skill training and capacity development training in their

enterprise. During the last one year, a total number of 15 youths are looking after their own

poultry units, 20 number of youths are running their piggery units, 10 youths are looking after

their bee keeping units and 20 number of youths are running their own mushroom production unit

successfully.

ii. Promotion of Modern Bee Keeping for Sustaining Rural livelihood in Mamit District

– KVK, Lengpui, Mamit This project is funded by NABARD under Farm Sector Development scheme. Under this

Project, 9 villages are covered under Mamit District – Saithah, W. Phaileng, Hmunpui, Lengpui,

Tuahzawl, Rulpuihlim, Chhuntlang, West Lungdar and Reiek. Branding of Honey production and

FSSAI certificate for public access and marketting was issued under two separate Mamit District

RD Blocks namely Reiek and West Phaileng.

iii. Success story of Mrs. R. Vanlalzami (Bawbawih Home Made Pickle)

Mrs. R. Vanlalzami of Lunglawn locality of Lunglei R.D. Block is a single mother of two

children. With the technical support of KVK, Lunglei, she has made her own pickle brand

Bawbawih Home-Made Pickle. Her earning per month is Rs. 25000 – 40000/- only through

pickles. Now, she is chosen for the Start Up Business in Leitlangpui Kailawn from the

Southern range.

iv. Promotion of Gooseberry (Ribes grossularia) in N. Vanlaiphai, Serchhip District.

Through the intervention of the KVK, Serchhip District, Gooseberry which are found in

abundance in wild are processed and marketed as Gooseberry juice, candy, powder, Fermented

Gooseberry juice etc. and one of the farmer at N. Vanlaiphai named Mr.Vanlalfela has earned a

net income of Rs. 16.83 lakh in the year 2018 from the enterprise and he had been awarded

‘Mizoram Best Entrepreneur, 2016’.

v. Promotion of Breeding of Silver Barb (Puntius gonionotus).

For the first time in Mizoram, Silver Barb (Puntius gonionotus) was bred at State Fish

Farm, Lengpui on 3rd July, 2019 and 12,000nos seed was distributed to 6 farmers of Lengpui,

Lengte and Dialdawk and the expected income to be generated from this intervention is Rs.

4,50,000/- per annum with an approximate 12% mortality rate.

vi. Nutrient Management in Dragon Fruit: A source of Income generation

Dragon fruit is one of the important crops grown at Hnahthial village of Lunglei District.

The crop productivity is usually low due to poor management of Nutrients. To address this

problem, KVK, Hnahthial have conducted Training on Nutrient Management on Dragon Fruit and

On-Farm Trial was also conducted in Pu Lalnunmawia Garden at Hnahthial. By following the

technology which he received from KVK, the fruit yield of Dragon Fruit was increased

drastically. From an area of 0.6 hectare of plot, he is harvesting 13 Qtls. of Dragon fruit which

fetch him Rs. 2.00 lakh. Seeing this success story, many Farmers have started adopting this

technology.

viii. Mango Squash preparation by farm women at Kawlchaw ‘W’.

Kawlchaw ‘W’ village is popular with Mango (Rangkuai) production as the climate

thrives well for Mango (Rangkuai) cultivation. It is one of the best sources of income for farmers

by selling raw mango to Local market and different Districts of Mizoram through middleman.

However, the market value of raw mango is declining due to Pest infestation and other external

factors. So, in order to compensate the losses, post harvest management of Mango through

preparation of Mango squash using the unmarketable produce has been popularized among the

farm women of Kawlchaw ‘W’ village. 30 numbers of Farm women started preparing Mango

Squash under the supervision of SMS (Home Sc), KVK Lawngtlai. So, with a simple technology,

Farmers continue to prepare Mango squash from their own produced instead of wasting

unmarketable Mango which in turn became a good source of additional income for Mango farmer

in Kawlchaw ‘W’ village.

ix. Integrated Farming with Mithun as Major Production System.

Name of Farmer: M. Hrangmawia (Recipient of IARI Innovative Farmer Award, 2020)

Address: Siata P.O ; Siaha District, Mizoram

He is the pioneer of traditional Mithun rearing in Mizoram. The farmer had started Mithun

rearing since 1997 and till date has come up with a total population of 250 numbers of Mithun. He

owned a total of 100 Ha land. He also reared a good numbers of cattle and other livestock like

sheep, goat, pig, horses and fishes in a traditional way. Besides he owned 7 numbers of pond

measuring 200 sq.ft each for fish rearing and consumption for livestock and horticultural crops

like mandarin orange, tree bean (Local), mangoes (Rangwai), pineapple (Kew), banana, etc.

Details of Innovation:

The new package of practices /management strategies adopted by the farmer: Semi-

intensive method of Mithun rearing.

1. Free range in 50 ha of land with fencing.

2. Provision of salt licking place besides feeding of salt block twice daily.

3. Ear clipping/marking for identification.

4. Bell attached to lactating mother for calling of young calves.

5. Branding for identification.

6. New born calves given extra care to prevent navel ill.

7. Injured animals are isolated and treated

KVK Intervention:

KVK Siaha was actively involved in giving training, diagnostic visits and other extension

activities in and around Siata village on animal production and horticultural crops since 2015. Mr.

M. Hrangmawia was one of the many farmers who highly benefitted from KVK Siaha

interventions.

Horizontal spread: Rearing of Mithun poses a challenge for the Mizos even today but the trade of mithun

rearing spreads to 30 (thirty) families at the same village viz; Siata village Moreover, farmers

from 4 (Four) villages namely Tipa, Chakhei, Chhaolo and Chapi have also taken up Mithun

farming thereby accounting to more than 36 numbers of family engaged in the trade within the

district. Besides, State Department of AH & Vety had procured numbers of Mithun from him to

be distributed to others part of the states especially to Khuangleng village of Champhai district.

Outcome:

1. It is worthwhile mentioning that he sold on an average 25 numbers of Mithun that has

attained market age for consumption every year to different parts of Mizoram. Within 3

years he earned around 60 lakhs rupees from selling different animals and fishes, besides

earning around 1.5 lakhs from horticultural crops. At present, he is one of the highest

earning farmers in Mizoram.

x. Seedling root dip treatment with Microbial Consortium.

Mizoram due to its high rainfall and sloppy topography results in leaching of base cations

these actions leads to soil acidity in the region. As phosphorus (P) gets fixed easily in acid soil,

cultivated crop shows P deficiency very easily. Around 50 to 90% of added P gets fixed in acid

soils. As P is a major nutrients required by plants for their growth and development their

management is also very challenging in acid soils of Mizoram.

KVK intervention:

As rice is the staple food crop of Mizoram seedling root dip treatment along with

biofertilzer was carried out in paddy seedlings in Kolasib district through On Farm Trail and

Frontline Demonstration by KVK Kolasib base on the technology developed by Central

Agricultural University ,College of Post Graduate Studies, Umiam.

Details of Technology:

1. An area (9m x 5m area) was prepared in the corner of the field which is then used as a

mud slurry for root dipping. The depth for mud slurry should be 10 cm.

2. The mud slurry is mixed with 7 kg SSP and 4 kg Microbial Consortium.

3. The roots of the uprooted rice seedling were wash properly with water.

4. Clean rice seedlings were dipped at the mud slurry mixed with SSP and Microbial

Consortium for 1 hr before transplanting.

Root dip treatment along with biofertilizer has now being widely practice by the farmers

in Kolasib district covering more than 20 ha.
