Hi Fabulous Friesian Lovers!!

We are now into the second half of the year, and here at Ebony Park it is starting to cool down... our horses are getting fluffier, and our competition horses are having a break... but here at EP HQ we are still just as busy as ever!

We are so excited to announce that Natasha will be an educator at Equitana this year!! So preparations are already underway... even though it is months away!

I would like to congratulate Lauren for finding her dream horse in Arnie - we can’t wait to see you out there and competing together in a few years time :)

This month we also say farewell to our German groom Fabienne, who has finished her 3 months at Ebony Park and is off on holiday adventures around Australia before heading home - we will miss you!!

We are very excited to be running a silent auction on Hercules of Ebony Park - finding the right home and the right owner for our horses is so important to us, so we want to give everyone the opportunity to bid what they can on this lovely gelding, and tell us a bit more about the home and life that he would have... bids close on the 14th July, so make sure you head over to Page 18 to read more!

News From Holland - Anne 340 Sport Passes AwayWe were very saddened at the start of June to learn that Abe’s sire, Anne 340 Sport had passed away... these were some words from his owner...

“As I write this, my tears make it difficult to see. This morning, my beautiful, wonderful Approved Friesian Stallion Anne 340 Sport was found dead in his stall. At the normal 10 p.m. walk thru the barn last night he was perfect, we even had him collected and shipped on him yesterday. At 6:30 a.m. this morning, he was dead in his stall. Anne’s first crop of foals since he relocated to Alabama in early 2013 are now being born, and they are all beautiful beyond words. I will provide more info as it is known, I have lost a wonderful Stallion, Alabama has lost its first Approved Friesian Stallion, the Friesian world has lost a wonderful ambassador for the magnificent Friesian

horse. Chris and I along, with all his handlers, have lost a wonderful friend.”

Hi Friesian lovers!!!! :)

We are getting right back into it after Phil, Danika and I had a fabulous trip around Europe with mine and Phil’s parents!! It was such a wonderful experience to take Danika around visiting the sights! I am so grateful to the Kate’s for keeping Ebony Park going while we were away :)

I’m really looking forward to getting back into competing next month... I missed the boys while I was away (I’m sure they didn’t miss me haha - they loved having the time off!!) - but we are back into full work now so that we can go to the next competition fully prepared and ready to ROCK!! :)

This month I am so to be finding a new forever home for purebred gelding Hercules! Here at Ebony Park home is the most important thing for our horses, so we are running a silent auction until next Monday, so that you can bid what you think Hercules is worth and what you can afford, as well as describing the home you would provide for him... we can’t wait to meet his new owner this month! Make sure you head over to page 18 of the magazine to read more about Hercules and to submit your bid!

We are very excited here at Ebony Park HQ about something we have been working on for a while... I can’t say much... but I can let you know that you will find out more in next month’s magazine... so make sure you keep tuned!

Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Feeding the Weanling in WinterWow! It’s unbelievable how fast this year is going – we are already coming into the winter months (even though we are only just starting to get the really cold weather here at Ebony Park)!

We have just finished weaning the last of our youngsters, so this month, I thought we would t a l k a b o u t f e e d i n g t h e weanling coming into the colder winter months.

Feeding your young horse p r o p e r l y i s e s p e c i a l l y important (older horses need to be fed properly too, but are much more forgiving if you are not feeding them correctly!), as they are growing and maturing – they are laying down new muscle and bone that will shape the way they look for the rest of their life.

The process of growing and maturing is a long one, with larger horses such as the Friesians not reaching full maturity until they are 6 or 7 years old - they might not be growing upwards the whole time, but they will be filling out and maturing! :)

Coming in to winter, the pasture is starting to lose some of the nutrients it had when it was first becoming green last spring – it may or may not still look green, but

the nutritional value has fallen, and the grass is most ly made up of fibre and moisture now. At this time it is important to make sure your weanling or young horse is receiving enough v i t a m i n s a n d minerals in order to a p p r o p r i a t e l y supplement their diet.

Y o u c a n u s e products such as sal t b locks, but t h e s e d o n o t necessari ly give them everything they need, so a p o w d e r e d o r p e l l e t e d supplement in their hard feed (or just mixed with a bit of chaff if they are not hard fed) is a better option. Providing the right vitamins and minerals to your weanling ensures that they are not in excess of or deficient in a particular vitamin or mineral that may be vital for proper growth and maturity.

With such a young horse, you are probably not rugging during winter – our little rascals tend to get rugs caught, ripped, chewed on and generally ruined so there is not much point at this stage. Therefore your weanlings

really need appropriate shelter in their paddocks, and plenty of hay and roughage to keep them warm.

P r o v i d i n g h o r s e s w i t h roughage and fibre in the form of hay (even your poorest quality grass hay for horses that are getting too fat!), e n s u r e s t h a t t h e b i g fermentation vat that is their hindgut is always full – having t h e i r h i n d g u t f u l l a n d fermenting away produces heat and keeps your horses warm, as well as keeping them hydrated as it holds water.

It is important to monitor your horses body condition – in winter their long coats make it harder to tel l whether your horse is getting too fat or perhaps too thin. You can feel for fat over certain areas of the horses body such as the ribcage. By doing this regularly – say, once a week at least – you should b e a b l e t o n o t i c e differences in your horses bodyweight.

If your horse is getting too fat, a reduction in the amount of hard feed he is getting will remedy this problem, or giving a lower quality hay to take the weight off (remember that it is very important that your horse is getting at least 1%

and ideally 2% o f i t s bodyweight in r o u g h a g e – pasture or hay (or chaff) per d a y , s o reduc ing the amount of hay you are giving them can be disastrous, as it is essential to y o u r h o r s e s d i g e s t i v e health!).

If your horse is getting too thin, increase the hard feed, perhaps by adding fats in the form of oils, soybean meal, rice bran etc. as these are not ‘fizzy’ feeds.

It is important to remember that each horse is an individual, and each horse will need to be fed differently – s o m e wi l l lose m o r e w e i g h t t h a n others in w i n t e r , some will p u t o n w e i g h t ! ! So make sure that

you check each horse and alter their diet accordingly and you will see a lovely yearling emerging on the other side of winter!

Tash’s Training Tip - Problem SolvingHi Super riders! :)How is everything going with you? How is the riding going?!?!?Ok, so this month – how have you been going?!?!? No - really?!? How is the riding, and the goals, and the ex t raord inary l i f e going? I trust you are all super on track and firing!!! But just in case you need some help, I wanted to talk this month about problem solving.Neil Armstrong once said, "You only have to solve two problems when going to the moon: first, how to get there; and second, how to get back. The key is don't leave until you have solved both problems."I love that!!! And it makes a lot of sense!To solve any problem, there are three questions to ask yourself: First, what could I do? Second, what could I read? And third, whom could I ask?If you are focussed on the problem, then that is all you will see, and you will be unable to see solutions unt i l you star t asking yourself the right questions. If you ask questions like – why did this happen to me, what’s going to happen

now, I’m in big trouble, I don’t know what to do... Then that will be your reality and your problem will only get bigger.If you ask yourself what can I do? Who has solved a problem like this? Who has overcome a problem like this? What did they do? Rather than focus on what you can’t do about the problem, focus on what you can do about it.Think of your problems a year ago, or 5 years ago, or 10 years ago? Do you still have the same problems now??? Of course not! You realise you solved all those problems, and that’s the beauty of life, as soon as you have solved one level of problems, you get a new set!!!! Bring it on!

So firstly - you need to accept you are never without problems, they are always there – challenging you, pushing you, and helping you become better and better. S e c o n d l y - t h e y a r e transient. They don’t last. Your problems from 10 years ago are not the same as now. Nothing stays the same and everything will pass - so too will your problems.You also have to realise the prob lem is never the p r o b l e m . I f s o m e o n e comes to me saying they want to lose weight – they say the problem is they can't lose weight - and I ask a few more questions - we might come to learn the real problem is that they

are scared of success and that is the problem that needs addressing, and the weight problem is easily f i x e d w h e n t h e m a i n problem is fixed.You also have to be very careful how you view your ‘problems’ and your beliefs about wether or not they can be solved. The story of G e o r g e D a n t z i g t h a t Cynthia Kersey wrote about in Unstoppable . As a college student, George studied very hard and always late into the night, so late that he overslept one morning, arriving 20 minutes late for class. He quickly copied the two math problems on the board, assuming they were the homework assignment. It took him several days to

work through the two problems, but finally he had a breakthrough and d r o p p e d t h e homework on the professor's desk the next day.Later, on a Sunday morning, George was awakened at 6 a.m. by his excited professor. Since George was late for class, he hadn't h e a r d t h e p r o f e s s o r

announce that the two unsolvable equations on t h e b o a r d w e r e mathematical mind teasers that even Einstein hadn't been able to answer. But George Dantzig, working without any thoughts of limitation, had solved not one, but two problems that h a d s t u m p e d m a t h e m a t i c i a n s f o r thousands of years.Simply put, George solved the problems because he didn't know he couldn't.So what problems are you not solving because you think they are real and unsolvable?Or more importantly what problems do you need to n o w t h i n k a b o u t a s

completely easy to solve as you are blissfully not aware the problem is unsolvable?I LOVE being blissfully unaware. Not ignorant or s tup id , j us t b l i ss fu l l y unaware. I didn’t know it was hard to get to Grand Prix, or taking a Friesian to G r a n d P r i x w a s a challenge, or maintaing your weight while eating 100kg of chocolate was impossible. So because I didn’t know these things were going to be hard or impossible, that wasn’t my reality. What limitations or beliefs are you carrying around that make your ‘reality’ harder than what it has to be! Think of George! If you think you are meant to be able to do it, then you find you can! So what needs to change for you, so you can be like George and finally solve a problem that has stumped people for years?I wish you all the very best in your problem solving!To Your Success,

Kate’s Kickass Tips! Young Horse Update: Helena

Hey guys,

This month I thought I would give you an update on one of our exciting young mares, Helena of Ebony Park. Helena is by 17.1hh Purebred Friesian stallion Ebony Park Elko and out of Ebony Park Jantje (Purebred mare). She gets her height, presence and trainability from her sire and her beauty and conformation from her dam… Perfect mix!

Helena is only 3 ½ years old and is showing amazing potential in the dressage arena. Her trot is big and expressive and she shows great power at such a young age.

She is extremely forward for a Friesian which makes training a lot easier (to me anyway haha), we have been working on getting nice and long in the neck, and getting her to stretch forward into the contact. Like many Friesians, Helena likes to tuck her head in and become behind the vertical, so I need to be aware of how I am riding and training her.

In order to keep her head and neck travelling forward I combine pressure from my hands and legs when the head is up, when she releases I soften my hands and take my leg off, like

everything we do, horses learn from a pressure and release method.

The key to this is to keep the horse travelling forward, without the forwards, we are creating a tense horse that is stiff through the back, therefore developing the wrong muscles (the opposite of what we are wanting to achieve). The horse needs that forward energy so they can travel into the contact which results in a light yet connected feel through the reins.

It is important to be patient as this is very hard for young horses, it is just like a gym work out, build up her muscles slowly to help her become more balanced.

In a few months Helena will have a big break for the late stages of her pregnancy and birth of her first foal.

She is currently in foal to Ebony Park Jorrit, and we are super excited to see what they produce! Once she has recovered from her pregnancy, she will come back into work and start doing a few competitions so we can see what she scores.

Hercules was very nearly a Christmas baby in 2010, being born on Christmas eve (DOB: 24/12/2010)!! He has three lovely paces, and we can’t wait to see him mature and grow!

We started his training under saddle at the start of the year, and he has only impressed – he is forward but quiet, and we can’y wait to see his progress on the dressage arena, as a show horse, or even as a trail horse in the future!!

Fabulous Fabienne’s Friesian Fables

Hi guys,I can’t believe that my 3 months at Ebony Park are now over - it went so quick! During my time at EP I had a lot of fun working with the whole Ebony Park team and clients. I felt so at home here that I now look to them as my Australian family. During my stay here I was given the opportunity to ride many different horses, however I will miss little pony Silver the most. I did a lot of trick training with him and practised my balance doing a lot of bare back riding! He is such a cool little pony, I can’t wait to see Danika riding him in the years to come. Other than Silver I also loved Helena, she is such a gentle and smart horse, it was a great experience doing the first few rides on her.One of the most amazing things that I experienced here was in my riding. I rode my first Piaffe and Passage on Ebony Park Jorrit (Purebred Friesian stallion) it was an unbelievable feeling to ride a horse with such elevation. I also learnt how to do flying changes on Jorrit as well, it is such a tricky movement so it really tested my riding abilities.

Apart from my riding, I learnt a lot about handling stallions and young horses. Being able to figure out what the horse is thinking and how much my actions al ter their react ions was real ly interesting to learn.Now I am off to explore the East Coast of Australia, I am so excited to see what the rest of Australia has to offer. I am so happy to have met you all and hopefully you come visit me in Germany some day!!!!
