owners who are not shy at the ring – engineer Alan Potts, who recently sent him a batch of horses, is but one example.

Donald, who was accompanied by Australia-based Le Metayer, said of Harlem: “He’s for a Hong Kong client for whom I bought [the ex-Eve Johnson-Houghton-trained] Spillway; he won the [Gr.1] Australian Cup.

“He’s for a partnership with a client of Louis’s, and will be trained by David Hayes. My client is very keen to win the Sydney Cup.” Le Metayer added: “He is a beautiful horse and he has some very good form which ties in with Grey Lion, who has since won the [Gr.3] Geelong Cup [in Australia].”

was the highest at this sale since Hearts Of Fire changed hands for 550,000gns in 2010.

Tom Malone, standing by the ring alongside Tizzard’s son Joe, and taking phone instructions from the unnamed client, winced as Alastair Pim’s gavel hammered the wood, and Donald later admitted surprise at facing such stern opposition from a Jumps trainer.

Tizzard, a man whose training career started with a couple of point-to-pointers bought to give Joe early lessons, is not averse to giant-killing. In Cue Card and Thistlecrack, he trains two of the most enviable horses in training, and he has attracted racehorse

Harlem, a son of Champs Elysees, was a stablemate of Grey Lion’s when both were in training with Andre Fabre. They met on the track twice this year, in Group races at Saint-Cloud and Chantilly, and Harlem finished in front of his colleague on both occasions.

JUDDMONTE DRAFT MAKES THE DAYTurnover at this year’s Horses in Training Sale went past last year’s figure while the Juddmonte Farms consignment was still going through the ring, hours before close of play and with another session to come today.

Yesterday’s session was as buoyant as any held inside Park Paddocks this year, with a barely believable clearance rate of 95%, up from 88%. Turnover of 9,653,300gns was up 16%, while the average and median prices of 33,753gns and 17,000gns were increases of 28% and 13% respectively. Less was more, for 58 fewer horses walked the ring compared to the same day last year.

Juddmonte’s contribution to income was 2,257,500gns from the sale of 32 horses, as pre-auction forecasts that it was a strong draft proved spot on. Last year, Juddmonte put 53 horses through the ring and turned over 1,768,500gns, headed by two lots who made exactly 100,000gns.

Link gelding Epicuris (Lot 1100), who came to the ring with some serious form. Unbeaten at two, when his victories included the Gr.1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, he finished fifth to Golden Horn in last year’s Gr.1 Derby, but had been lightly-raced since. Mullins’ ring man, Harold Kirk, was not put off, and his bid of 140,000gns sealed the deal.

After the Juddmonte draft had been completed, racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said: “We brought quite a few very nice horses to the sale and I’m glad a lot of people seemed to agree. They sold well, but it was timing and the Pound is quite weak. We didn’t purposely go out to bring certain horses; there is always supply and demand, but you’ve got to have something people want.”

With obvious Australasian demand for Juddmonte bloodstock, Grimthorpe was asked why his boss does not simply keep certain horses to run in that part of the world, but he said: “Prince Khaled likes to see his horses run in Europe.”

ROBERTS’ HORSE LIVES UP TO HIS NAMERacehorse owner Richard Roberts saw his horse Pleaseletmewin for only the second time yesterday, when he made a 450,000gns windfall in the ring. Offered from Ralph Beckett’s Hampshire stables, the two-year-old gelding (Lot 1028) was knocked down to Qatar champion trainer Gassim Al Ghazali, a man on a mission, who admitted: “That felt like pressure. When I came from Qatar to here I had only one name in mind. If he was not withdrawn he was coming back with me, 100 per cent. I didn’t put any limit on him.”

Al Ghazali was speaking after breaking the resolve of bloodstock agent Alex Elliott, who bought the colt for just 36,000gns as a yearling and hoped to gain him again, this time for a client in America. Part of the appeal was a Breeders’ Cup entry, but Elliott’s determination was not enough and he had to settle for the underbidder’s role.

In the bar after the sale, Elliott and Roberts shared disappointment and elation, and Pleaseletmewin’s former owner, who lives in Weybridge, Surrey, and has had horses with Beckett for eleven years, cut a relaxed figure. He said: “This is only the second time I’ve seen the horse because I’ve had cancer this year. On the day he won at Newmarket [in July] I was undergoing a 12-hour operation.”

A son of Power, Pleaseletmewin was bred by Peter Savill’s Ballykilbride Stud and produced by the Indian Ridge mare Jacaranda Ridge. He won at Wolverhampton in May, landed the

Compare that to seven who made a six-figure sum yesterday, headed by the 520,000gns top lot Harlem and followed by Jorvick (Lot 1107), a Listed-winning Mizzen Mast three-year-old who made 220,000gns. Ted Voute signed for the colt who was knocked down to Saad bin Mishraf, a confidante of Saudi Arabian Prince Faisal bin Khaled, who struck again when paying 350,000gns for Real Dominion (Lot 1149) from Andrew Balding’s Kingsclere Stables. The son of Cape Blanco showed an aptitude for the all-weather when winning at Kempton before taking a quick-ground handicap over twelve furlongs at Ascot in midsummer. He became a money spinner yesterday for owners Mick and Janice Mariscotti, who bought him for 60,000gns as a yearling.

Other Juddmonte horses who paid their way included Exoteric (Lot 1080), who heads to the Australian stables of Chris Waller after being sold to agent Guy Mulcaster for 180,000gns. This was Mulcaster’s ninth purchase of the week (for a total of £603,000) and he conveyed the advantage of buying a Juddmonte horse when saying: “They are very transparent with their sales pitch, so you know what you are getting.”

Mulcaster had tried to secure the next horse into the ring, Withhold (Lot 1081), but neither he, David Allen nor Tom Malone could match the 170,000gns valuation of racehorse owner Tony Bloom, who owned a leg in the great chaser Denman. Withhold, another son of Champs Elysees, won a two-mile handicap for Charlie Hills on his most recent start.

Jumps trainer Colin Tizzard missed out on the top lot, but Willie Mullins was more fortunate when reeling in the four-year-old Rail

Above N Beyond (Lot 1013) from Tom Dascombe’s stables. Owned by Bert Black and Michael Owen, Above N Beyond had been creeping up the ratings this season and went through the century mark to 103 when winning a mile handicap at Haydock last month. His family members include the Dascombe-trained Kachy, who was runner-up in this year’s Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup.

Stroud also spent 150,000gns on Dutch Law (Lot 994), a 99-rated four-year-old winner of four races for Hughie Morrison’s yard, while another investor with a Middle Eastern-mission in mind was Saudi Arabian Prince Sultan bin Mohammed.

He seems to like short-named horses, for having bought Hawke on Monday with a bid of 230,000gns he was back to secure Laurence (Lot 1070) from Luca Cumani’s Bedford House Stables. Prince Sultan’s 200,000gns bid was enough to prise the four-year-old son of Dubawi away from the underbidder, BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly, gaining him a horse who showed his wellbeing when winning a 20-runner handicap at Doncaster on Saturday.

JUMPERS IN ACTIONThe day’s top lot so nearly became an intriguing new recruit to Jumps racing, but others will be plying their trade in that sphere. Among higher-value, soon-to-be-hurdlers were a pair who made 160,000gns, starting with Stratum (Lot 1036), who went down to Harold Kirk and Willie Mullins, the same pair also secured 140,000gns Epicuris from Juddmonte. Stratum (Dansili) only missed the first three once in eight starts for John Gosden’s stable and showed his versatility in middle-distance races on a variety of ground.

Percy Street (Lot 1178) could not boast such consistency, but he was Listed-placed for trainer Karl Burke and had the benefit of a win at Doncaster on Saturday to aid his value. Highflyer Bloodstock’s Anthony Bromley did the bidding and buying, then said Percy Street would be joining Nicky Henderson.

DOW BONDS WITH SCARAMANGAMr Scaramanga (Lot 923) is unlikely to emulate his sire Sir Percy by winning the Derby, but he is moving to Epsom. A 90,000gns bid by trainer Simon Dow ensured the change of address for the colt, who has been residing at Richard Hannon’s Wiltshire stables. Bred by Lordship Stud and sold as a yearling for €78,000 at Tattersalls Ireland when picked up by Hannon and Ross Doyle, Mr Scaramanga won at Brighton in May and then put up some fine efforts in defeat, including when fourth to Churchill in the Listed Chesham Stakes and then third in Newmarket’s Gr.2 Superlative Stakes.

Newmarket race, a nursery, two months later and gave his valuation a timely boost on Saturday when landing Newbury’s Gr.3 Horris Hill Stakes.

Al Ghazali did not rule in or out the possibility that Pleaseletmewin could run at the Breeders’ Cup, saying: “I’ve bought him for Sheail Al Kuwari, who is the leading owner in Qatar. I will talk to him this evening about plans. I was very relieved to see this horse in the ring, because every time I get to a sale there are withdrawals. [In the past] I have come to buy a horse and when I tell the owner they are withdrawn they say ‘don’t buy anything then’. That’s not good for the trainer, the owner or the auction.”

BEYOND FESTIVAL APPEALIt would not be the Horses in Training Sale if Anthony Stroud was not buying for the Dubai Carnival. In that respect it has been business as usual this week, although in mid-afternoon yesterday Stroud admitted: “In the past I’ve bought eight or ten at this sale, while this time I’ve bought four or five. We normally buy at the Arc Sale, but this year we only got one. The number of available horses seems to be down.”

His comments came after his bid of 230,000gns had landed one of the day’s bigger fish, the three-year-old Exceed And Excel colt

MOUNT NELSON TO BOARDSMILL“His strike rate on the Flat and Stakes winners to runners statistics are up there with some of the leading Flat sires. His progeny are tough and improve with age, so it is no surprise to see plenty of them making their way into the big National Hunt trainers’ yards. It is also very encouraging that there seems to be no bias between his colts and his fillies, with over half of his Stakes performers being fillies.”

Julian Dollar, general manager at Newsells stated: “Although we are sad to say goodbye to Mount Nelson, we are delighted that he is going to Boardsmill Stud, where he will get every opportunity to cover a strong book of mares. Mount Nelson has been a good servant to Newsells Park, producing 32 Group and Stakes performers to date, including seven Group or Stakes winners this year alone, juveniles like Royal Ascot winner Berkshire and Purr Along, sprinters like Ninjago and Librisa Breeze, and Classic and Gr.1 performers like the dual Oaks-placed Volume. He can produce the most magnificent

Dow was enthusiastic about his purchase, and delighted for the new owner, who he said has been “a complete inspiration to my Epsom stables”. The person in question, Robert Moss, will share the new acquisition with his business partner Dale Brennan.

The trainer added: “Robert started by having a little share in a partnership horse, but he is quite a character and wanted to steer his own ship. We’ll give this colt a little bit of time off and then assess things, but he could go to Dubai or stay here and run on the all-weather. The sire is progressing.”

Avenir Certain, a member of his first crop, took the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and Gr.1 Prix de Diane in 2014 and the feat was repeated this year by La Cressonniere, who is still unbeaten in eight starts and due to remain in training as a four-year-old. These Champions are among 17 Listed and Pattern winners by Le Havre, alongside the Gr.2 Prix Chaudenay scorer Auvray, Gr.3 Prix de Meautry winner Suedois, who was also runner-up in the Gr.1 July Cup, Gr.1 Haydock Sprint Cup and Gr.1 Prix de la Forêt, Zghorta Dance, a recent second in the Gr.1 Premio Lydia Tesio and winner of the Gr.3 Prix Vanteaux, and Queen Bee, winner of the Gr.3 Prix du Calvados at two.

Having started off at stud at only €5,000, Le Havre duly saw his fee rise as a consequence of his outstanding results. He covered 199 mares in 2015 at a fee of €20,000, 100 of which had gained black type on the track or produced a black-type horse, and 189 in 2016 at €35,000, 112 of which had gained black type or produced a black-type horse. His fertility rate is close to 90% every year.

Le Havre’s covering fee for 2017 will be announced on Monday, 31st October.

His progeny rapidly caught buyers’ eyes at the sales. At the 2016 Arqana August Yearling Sale, 100% of the eleven colts and fillies on offer were sold, at an average price of €140,000, and they had had been conceived off a €5,000 fee. They included a full-brother to La Cressonnière, who was knocked down for €520,000 to Blandford Bloodstock.

Registration is now open on www.arqanaonline.com.

HORSE INSURANCE SPECIALIST

In the not so distant past it was often easy to recognize horses as coming from a family that could be readily identified with great breeders such as the Astors, the Derbys, the Roseberys, Major

Lionel Holiday, Marcel Boussac, Jim and Stanhope Joel, and the Aga Khan. In these days of increasing commercialism, it is becoming ever more rare for studs to develop families in the same way.

One largely commercial stud that has done so is Meon Valley. Although various other lines have periodically been introduced into the stud, the vast majority of the mares currently on the roster go back to one of the three foundation mares, One In A Million, Reprocolor and Odeon, whom Egon and Betty Weinfeld bought through agent Richard Galpin back in 1977.

Over the years Reprocolor has proved to be by far the most prolific and successful of the trio, but the stud’s latest star, the four-year-old Shamardal filly Speedy Boarding, twice a Gr.1 winner in France this year and who was second the weekend before last in the Gr.1 British Champion Fillies’ and Mares’ Stakes at Ascot, goes back to One In A Million. Her third dam Milligram was the last filly to win the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes before Minding achieved the same feat later on the same card.

Speedy Boarding’s conqueror at Ascot was the John Gosden-trained Journey. Something of a character, she became the latest of 26 Group or Grade 1 winners for her sire Dubawi, whose son Sheikhzayedroad had won the Gr.2 British Champions Long Distance Cup earlier in the day. In fact, Dubawi enjoyed a stellar weekend. The following day his son Erupt was successful in the Gr.1 Canadian International, beating another of his sons, The Queen’s colt Dartmouth. The same day in Ireland Intimation and Rose De Pierre gave their sire another one-two, this time in the

Listed Garnet Stakes at Naas. On the Monday Dubawi Gold’s full-brother, the two-year-old D’Bai, became his 122nd Stakes winner when taking the Listed Silver Tankard at Pontefract. Number 123 came along last Friday when Quidura took the Gr.3 Pin Oak Valley View Stakes at Keeneland. Dubawi may not quite be in the same league as Galileo, but he is a remarkable stallion.

Journey, who was runner-up to Simple Verse in last year’s contest, is her dam’s fourth foal and third winner. Previously successful in three Listed races, as well as in the Gr.3 Pinnacle Stakes earlier this year, she was bred by her owner George Strawbridge, but her family is immediately identifiable with the White Lodge Stud of the Moller brothers, Eric and Budgie, going back to their foundation mare Horama, who is Journey’s seventh dam.

A former very successful amateur rider, George Strawbridge is one of the few remaining old fashioned, in the best sense, American owner-breeders. An Anglophile in the tradition of Paul Mellon and Jock Whitney, he and his manager James Wigan have developed this branch of the family over four generations, having purchased Journey’s fourth dam Flashy later in her life.

Trained by Jonathon Pease, who once described her as the best filly he had ever trained, Journey’s dam Montare only ever won in the autumn. From the first crop by Montjeu, she was precocious enough to be successful at two, but was much improved in the latter half of her three-year-old season when she won her last three starts, including the Gr.2 Prix du Conseil Municipal at Longchamp. Like her daughter, she was really seen at her best in the autumn as a four-year-old, when, after finishing runner-up to Mandesha in the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille, she won the Gr.2 Prix de Royallieu, before gaining a deserved Gr.1 success in the Prix Royal-Oak – a race in which Floripedes, the dam of her sire Montjeu,

finished second. Retained in training at five, she repeated her success in the Municipal, but failed to shine when tried in the Gr.1 Gold Cup.

Although she tended to carry her head awkwardly and was known to flash her tail, Montare was very consistent and genuine, even if she benefited from the fitting of cheek pieces. She certainly stayed well, but her dam Contare was a dual Listed winner in France over just seven and nine furlongs, while the next dam Balenare was a seven-furlong winner at two in France, where she was also placed in the Listed Criterium de Lyon, before going on to further success at three and four in minor company in America.

Further back the family is all about speed. Horama herself was a sprinter. She was purchased on behalf of the Mollers as a yearling by Nicky Morris – their fathers had been lifelong friends in China, where both families had made their fortune – in 1944, the same year the brothers bought White Lodge. Trained by Teddy Lambton, she developed into a pretty useful filly at three, winning handicaps at Chester, Liverpool and Pontefract, all over the minimum trip.

Before she died in retirement in 1966, she had bred 14 foals of which nine were winners, four of them at Stakes level. Only one of those winners won beyond six furlongs. The Nasrullah filly Urshalim, by far the most influential of her daughters in the long term, was a sprinter pure and simple, whose main requirements were five furlongs and a sound surface, although she did manage to finish runner-up in the King’s Stand Stakes on soft ground. At stud she bred two winners of the nine-furlong Cambridgeshire, a race of some considerable significance at the time, in Violetta III (who dead-heated with Henry The Seventh) and Lacquer, who was also successful earlier in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Her best daughter on the course was Sovereign, whom Timeform raved about, describing her as “a really lovely filly”, and saying she had the ability to match. The fastest two-year-old filly of 1967, she trained on well to finish third in the 1,000 Guineas before gaining a facile victory in the Coronation Stakes.

All three of those fillies were by Classic sires: Violetta III was by Pinza, Lacquer by Shantung and Sovereign by Pardao. As a result they all gained a measure of stamina, and a policy of repeatedly covering many members of the family with other sires of that ilk enabled Horama, a sprint handicapper, to eventually spawn a Classic family, many of whom were trained by Harry Wragg and his son Geoff.

The biggest contributor was Violetta III. That mare produced the Oaks runner-up Furioso to a covering by Ballymoss and she in turn bred the Gr.1 Derby and Gr.1 King George winner Teenoso to Youth. Another of her daughters, Laughing Girl (Sassafras), finished fourth in the Gr.1 Oaks and went on to foal the Gr.1 E P Taylor Stakes winner Braiswick (who was something of an aberration, being by the sprinter King Of Spain) and the Group winner Percy’s Lass (Blakeney), herself the dam of another Gr.1 Derby winner in Sir Percy (Mark Of Esteem).

In other hands, two further daughters of Violetta III, the Parthia mare Parthica and the Aggressor mare Little Miss, became respectively the dams of the Gr.1 Irish Oaks winner Give Thanks

(Relko) and the Gr.1 Derby Italiano winner Old Country (Quiet Fling), who was also an earlier winner of the Gr.1 Prix Royal-Oak, a race later won by Montare. Violetta III was also the fifth dam of the Gr.1 St Leger winner Rule Of Law.

Interestingly Violetta’s daughter Favoletta, a daughter of the 2,000 Guineas winner Baldric II, was another of the family to win the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas and remained truer to the family’s original character, producing those exceptionally speedy fillies Amaranda and Favoridge when bred to the Champion two-year-old Bold Lad (Ire) and Riva Ridge.

Lacquer became a very successful broodmare for Jock Whitney, her winners including the Gr.2 Yorkshire Cup and Jockey Club Cup winner Bright Finish and his Group-winning brother Shining Finish, who were both by Nijinsky. Sovereign had her part to play too. Her daughter by Sir Ivor was the aforementioned Flashy. A useful Listed winner over a mile herself, Flashy’s other winners besides Journey’s third dam Balenare included the Graustark colt Feu De Guerre, who won the Gr.2 Premio Emanuele Filiberto, and the Gr.2 Park Hill Stakes runner-up Broomstick Corner, who in turn was the grandam of the prolific seven-furlong Group winner Wizard King (Shaadi). Another of her daughters, bred after her sale to Paul de Moussac’s Maylands Stud, was the Vaguely Noble filly Princesse D’Elide who was Listed-placed in France and was later a successful producer, her daughters thriving in Japan.

Following the deaths of the Moller brothers, White Lodge, together with all the horses-in-training, the mares and their followers, was eventually sold in the autumn of 1989 to Sheikh Mohammed. Although in the short term the mares produced such Group winners as Foyer, Earlene, New South Wales and the aforementioned Wizard King for the Sheikh, the purchase surprisingly proved of little long term benefit. Indeed, there is no active mare in his stud currently that goes back to the mares included in the package. It was Sheikh Mohammed’s misfortune that among those culled earlier was Percy’s Lass. She was sold in foal to Mark Of Esteem, to whom she later returned to produce Sir Percy.

Ironically, some of the best horses the Sheikh has owned from White Lodge families were bought in other deals. The aforementioned Gr.1 St Leger winner Rule Of Law was purchased privately from Robert and Ben Sangster as a yearling; the Gr.1 Dubai World Cup winner Prince Bishop was acquired as a foal; and the Gr.2 Prix de Sandringham winner Fintry, herself a daughter of the French Group winner Campsie Fells, goes back to the once-raced Mill Path, a half-sister to Give Thanks, who was acquired privately.

The mares may have been dispersed, but the Horama family still thrives in other hands and will always be identified with White Lodge.

SACRED ELIXIR FAVOURITE FOR DERBYSacred Elixir (NZ) (Pour Moi) [pictured right] has been promoted to the top of Gr.1 Victoria Derby (2,500m) betting with his win in a lead-up race at Moonee Valley in Melbourne. He won the Gr.2 Vase (2,040m) on Saturday and is now the favourite for Saturday’s Victoria Derby at Flemington. After scoring first-up at Caulfield last month, he finished only eighth in the Caulfield Guineas on 8th October.

“After getting beaten in the Guineas there was a little bit of doubt creeping in, but it was a good strong win on Saturday and he relaxed well,” visiting New Zealand trainer Tony Pike said.

Sacred Elixir is a son of the Gr.1 Derby winner Pour Moi (Montjeu), who shuttles to Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand. From the family of Gr.1 Japan Cup winner Horlicks and Gr.1 Melbourne Cup winner Brew, he was purchased from the 2015 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sales by Raffles Racing and bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster for NZ$170,000 from the draft of Wentwood Grange.

Should Sacred Elixir salute in Saturday’s Derby, it will be the seventh time in the past decade that a New Zealand-bred galloper has won the race.

AUTUMN TARGETS FOR NURSE KITCHENThe lightly-raced three-year-old filly Nurse Kitchen (NZ) (Savabeel) [pictured below] is enjoying a well-deserved break following her impressive win in the Gr.2 Fillies’ Classic (1,600m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Bred by former trainer Peter Moody, she is by the Champion New Zealand sire Savabeel, out of the Montjeu mare Flying Monty.

Trainer David Brideoake indicated the major three-year-old staying races during the autumn would be ideal for the filly, who is raced by Moody’s wife Sarah.

SARTEN WINNER REVIVES GUINEAS HOPESUgo Foscolo (NZ) (Zacinto) bounced back to his best with a defeat on Monday of a hot field of three-year-olds and fellow Gr.1 New Zealand 2,000 Guineas hopefuls in the Gr.2 James & Annie Sarten Memorial (1,400m) at Te Rapa on New Zealand’s North Island.

Ugo Foscolo was unbeaten in his first three starts, but he lost his favouritism for next month’s Classic after racing erratically when sixth in the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas.

“I’m rapt to see him back in the winning groove,” trainer Stephen Marsh said. “We just had to try and forget that last run and we came here today hoping that he could bounce back.”

Ugo Foscolo is a son of Sir Michael Stoute’s former charge Zacinto (Dansili), who continues to kick goals in New Zealand where his eldest crop are three-year-olds.

BETTER BARRIER BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN ASTARAAn inside gate was instrumental in Astara (NZ) (Dalghar) adding winning momentum to her Gr.1 campaign when claiming top honours in the Listed Soliloquy Stakes at Ellerslie in Auckland. She made use of the inside draw to sit behind the pace and, once clear in the straight, she finished well to remain unbeaten at the Auckland track. She won twice there last season, including the Listed Champagne Stakes.

She is raced by her Perth-based breeder Neven Botica, who purchased her European Gr.3-winning sire Dalghar from the Aga Khan to stand at Brighthill Farm in New Zealand.

STAKES SUCCESS FOR POWERThe talented youngster Gift Of Power (NZ) posted a tenacious victory in the Listed Wellesley Stakes (1,000m) at Trentham to give Cambridge Stud’s shuttle stallion Power his first Southern Hemisphere Stakes winner. Successful on her debut last month, she is a daughter of the Gr.1 performer Capital Diamond (NZ) (Lucky Unicorn) and was bred by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, who have remained in the ownership after her purchase by her trainers Graeme and Debbie Rogerson from Cambridge Stud’s 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock yearling draft.

Power, a son of Oasis Dream, is represented by two-year-olds in his Northern Hemisphere crop and has sired Gr.3 winners Peace Envoy and Pleaseletmewin.

A start in the Listed Welcome Stakes at Riccarton on 12th November is now being considered for Gift Of Power.

and a flat, an outdoor school, lunge rings, two horse walkers and 130 acres of railed and hedged paddocks, over chalk.

The stud has an enviable reputation for consistency. In the last 15 years, itd has produced three Gr.1 winners, three Gr.2 winners, three Gr.3 winners and ten winners of Listed races, as well as 13 Group-placed.

As a business it can operate as a single boarding stud. It is close to Lambourn and currently attracts horses from well-established breeders and trainers and always has a long waiting list.

The price guide being quoted is offers in excess of £4m to include the stud equipment.

George Windsor Clive of Windsor Clive International commented: “Raffin Stud has everything for the professional breeder and we are hoping that the property will remain a first rate stud farm. It is a lovely place which deserves good stock.”

BENDIGO CUP SUCCESS FOR GODOLPHIN’S FRANCIS OF ASSISIGodolphin continued their run of form in Australia when Francis Of Assisi won yesterday’s Gr.3 Bendigo Cup. The son of Danehill Dancer put on a dominant display as he stalked the leader before kicking for home three furlongs out to win by a comfortable margin of three lengths.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy commented: “He’s a very genuine galloper, but I was surprised at what he showed me when I put the foot down and I was even more surprised how far in front I was at the furlong.”

The success comes as a result of a change in tactics by the Godolphin touring team, targeting mainly second-tier country races. The Charlie Appleby-trained six-year-old will probably be looking at another Melbourne Spring target after collecting more prize money for his Bendigo Cup win than he had throughout his entire 16-start career. It is thought he will now be considered for the Gr.3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Flemington, the race which gave Godolphin its first victory on Australian soil back in 2001.

Initially trained by Aidan O’Brien, Francis Of Assisi won at two and took the Listed Knockaire Stakes at Leopardstown at three. He joined Godolphin and was disappointing at Meydan before joining John Ferguson at Bloomfields, where he took three novice hurdles on the bounce. Campaigned in Graded company over hurdles thereafter, his best effort was third in the Gr.2 Winter Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown Park. Returned to Appleby after Ferguson relinquished his licence, he has since finished fourth in the Listed Silver Cup Stakes at York and sixth in the Summer Stakes at Goodwood.

Bred by Queen Cleopatra Syndicate, he was bought for 42,000gns by Anthony Stroud Bloodstock at the 2014 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale and is a full-brother to the Listed Navigation Stakes winner and Gr.2-placed Look At Me. Their dam is the Gr.3 1,000 Guineas Trial winner Queen Cleopatra (Kingmambo), who was placed in two Classics and is a full-sister to the multiple Gr.1 winner and sire Henrythenavigator.

fences at Newbury during his Gold Cup season, including a fine display in the Gr.2 Denman Chase.

Ireland’s Champion Jump trainer Willie Mullins is likely to be represented by improving chaser Avant Tout (Agent Blue), who is the current favourite. Mullins was first past the post with Be My Royal in the 2002 Hennessy Gold Cup, only for the horse to be disqualified in controversial circumstances after testing positive for a banned substance. Racing in the colours of the Supreme Horse Racing Club, Avant Tout won three of his five starts over fences last season. The six-year-old had brushed aside subsequent Galway Plate victor Lord Scoundrel in a three-mile Gr.2 novices’ chase at Limerick on 3rd April and then put up a fine weight carrying performance in a hotly-contested novices’ handicap chase at the Punchestown Festival later the same month.

There are eight Irish-trained entries in total for the Hennessy Gold Cup, with the rest split between Gordon Elliott and Noel Meade. Elliott has second-season chasers Outlander (Stowaway) and Roi Des Francs (Poliglote) among a five-strong team, while Meade has put in Wounded Warrior (Shantou) and Monksland (Beneficial).

Second-season chasers have a good record in the Hennessy Gold Cup and others who fall into that bracket include RSA Chase victor Blaklion (Kayf Tara) and Native River (Indian River), who defeated Henri Parry Morgan (Brian Boru) in the Gr.1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree in April.

Champion British Jump trainer Paul Nicholls has eight entries to choose from as he bids for a fourth victory in the race. They include Silviniaco Conti (Dom Alco), Gr.3 Scottish Grand National hero Vicente (Dom Alco), last year’s beaten favourite Saphir Du Rheu (Al Namix) and Virak (Bernebeau).

Smad Place (Smadoun) was an emphatic twelve-length winner last year of the Hennessy Gold Cup and could bid to join an illustrious list of dual winners. Only three horses, Mandarin, Arkle and Denman, have won two Hennessy Gold Cups.

Other eye-catching entries include Grand National runner-up The Last Samuri (Flemensfirth), Sausalito Sunrise (Gold Well) and Seeyouatmidnight (Midnight Legend).

HONG KONG

ENTRIES ANNOUNCED FOR INTERNATIONAL RACESWorld-class quality pervades the 184 entries for the Hong Kong International races, with stars from across four continents and 13 jurisdictions setting their sights towards the HK$83m end-of-year showcase at Sha Tin on Sunday, 11th December. The four races are the HK$25m Gr.1 Hong Kong Cup (2000m), the HK$23m Gr.1 Hong Kong Mile, the HK$18.5m Gr.1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) and the HK$16.5m Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m).

A total of 135 of this year’s entries are overseas nominations, against 49 from Hong Kong. In all, 69 of the nominated horses are Gr.1 winners and include all four of last year’s winners, Japan’s subsequent Horse of the Year Maurice (Screen Hero), compatriot A Shin Hikari (Deep Impact), Ireland’s Highland Reel (Galileo) and local hero Peniaphobia (Dandy Man).

Highland Reel gave Aidan O’Brien a first Hong Kong win in last year’s Vase and the master of Ballydoyle has a stellar hand among his eight nominations this year. As well as the aforementioned Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner, O’Brien’s Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Found (Galileo) holds

to facilitate ease of access for clients using its stallions Kendargent and Galiway.

The stud celebrates its tenth year of existence in 2017, making it an important year, and the acquisition of the new land will enable them to create four or five new jobs in the near future. The different annexes will be united under the banner Haras de Colleville. Sally Ann Grassick

Hong Kong could look to the 2014 Cup hero Designs On Rome (Holy Roman Emperor), winner of last Sunday’s Gr.2 Sha Tin Trophy on his first start this season. Other local entries for the Cup include Gr.1 winners Blazing Speed (Dylan Thomas; also nominated for the Vase) and Military Attack (Oratorio), while the promising four-year-old Rapper Dragon (Street Boss) is also being aimed at the race.

From France, the recent Gr.1 Canadian International winner Erupt (Dubawi) holds Cup and Vase entries, while fellow French raider Elliptique (New Approach), winner of the Gr.1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen, is a Cup possible. Britain’s Gr.1 Arlington Million victor Mondialiste (Galileo) has the option of the Cup or the Mile.

Overseas runners entered for the other three Hong Kong International races include, from Europe, Britain’s Gr.1 July Cup and Gr.1 Prix de la Foret winner Limato (Tagula; entered for the Mile and Sprint), Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes victor Profitable (Invincible Spirit; Sprint), Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Signs Of Blessing (Invincible Spirit; Sprint), September’s Gr.1 Prix du Moulin victor Vadamos (Monsun; Mile), the high-class filly Lumiere (Shamardal; Mile), the 2014 Gr.1 Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist (Monsun; Vase), last year’s Gr.1 Irish Derby hero

entries in both the Cup and the Vase; three-year-old Alice Springs (Galileo), with three Gr.1 wins already on the board, could start in either the Mile or the Cup; Classic heroine Seventh Heaven (Galileo), winner of the Gr.1 Irish Oaks and Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks this summer, has Cup and Vase entries; and last year’s Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Hit It A Bomb (War Front) is engaged in the Mile and Cup.

Another international heavyweight, Japan’s Maurice, won the Mile last year, but this time trainer Noriyuki Hori is favouring a tilt at the Cup, although the four-time Gr.1 winner also holds a mile entry. As well as Maurice, Japan’s entries include the Gr.1 Dubai Turf winner Real Steel (Deep Impact), last year’s runner-up Nuovo Record (Heart’s Cry), dual Gr.1 winner Lovely Day (King Kamehameha), Maurice’s recent Gr.2 Sapporo Kinen conqueror Neorealism (Neo Universe) and A Shin Hikari, winner of last year’s Cup.

These early Cup candidates offer the potential of a vintage renewal, with Ireland’s Pleascach (Teofilo) engaged for trainer Jim Bolger, who lifted the prize in 2004 with another filly, Alexander Goldrun. Australia’s recent Gr.1 Caulfield Cup heroine Jameka (Myboycharlie) is entered for the Cup and the Vase.

North American interest could rest on this year’s Gr.1 Northern Dancer Stakes winner The Pizza Man (English Channel; Vase) and this year’s dual Gr.1 victrix Miss Temple City (Temple City; Mile), while superstar filly Tepin (Bernstein), a six-time Gr.1 winner, also has an entry in the Mile.

Japan’s strong list of nominees, the largest overseas contingent with 38, also includes this year’s Gr.1 Sprinters Stakes hero Red Falx (Swept Overboard; Sprint), Gr.1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen winner Big Arthur (Sakura Bakushin O; Sprint) and Gr.1 Yasuda Kinen winner Logotype (Lohengrin; Mile and Cup).

Hong Kong’s nominees includes the last two Hong Kong Sprint winners, Aerovelocity (Pins; Sprint) and Peniaphobia (Sprint), as well as rising speed stars Lucky Bubbles (Sebring; Sprint) and Amazing Kids (Falkirk; Sprint), while the 2014 Mile winner Able Friend (Shamardal) is engaged for both the Sprint and the Mile. Yorkshire trainer David O’Meara will be double-handed at the Breeders’ Cup meeting at Santa Anita in Los Angeles on Saturday 5th November as he has entered both Mondialiste and Suedois in California. Mondialiste is no stranger to this fixture having finished an excellent second behind the brilliant Tepin in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Mile. He again holds an entry in the $2-million Mile, but is also engaged in the $4-million Breeders’ Cup Turf having guaranteed himself a place in the field by landing the Gr.1 Arlington Million in Chicago in August, which is a ‘Win And You’re In’ event for the Turf. Winner of last season’s Team British Racing Champion Award as the British-trained horse to win most prize money outside Europe in 2015, Mondialiste has been on his travels again this term and last time out stayed on strongly in the closing stages to take fourth in the Gr.1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland. Suedois is also entered in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, but is more likely to run in the $1-million Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint over six and a half furlongs. He has proved himself a top-class sprinter over recent months, contesting five straight Gr.1 races and never finishing out of the first five. Two of his best performances have come behind Limato, another of the eleven British-trained Breeders’ Cup entries. He finished two lengths second to him in the Gr.1 July Cup in mid-summer, and third, beaten three and a half lengths, in the Gr.1 Prix de la Foret on his latest start, three and a half weeks ago. O’Meara said: “I am really looking forward to the Breeders’ Cup and hopefully both Mondialiste and Suedois can be competitive. Mondialiste likes the American style of racing with its fast ground and turning tracks. We’ve run him a couple of times over the straight mile at Ascot and he hasn’t really enjoyed it. He ran okay in Kentucky last time, when he was beaten less than two lengths despite them going really steady in the early stages, which didn’t suit the hold-up horses [like him]. When he won the Arlington Million back in August he clocked the third fastest time in the last ten years, so the ground was pretty quick and a similar surface at Santa Anita will hold no fears for him. We are leaning towards stepping him up to a mile and a half for the Breeders’ Cup Turf rather than going again in the Mile. It’s a very fast mile and a half at Santa Anita, beginning in a chute which is part of the sprint course, so I think that will suit him fine. Suedois has only been with us for just over a year and he’s had a fantastic season, with his second place in the July Cup being the highlight. He was also third in the Haydock Sprint Cup, when we made plenty of use of him, fourth in the Prix Maurice de Gheest and beaten less than a length at Royal Ascot, so he has been running really well all year. One can never be sure how they will deal with the travelling but he is a sensible horse with a good head on him so I would be hopeful on that score. It’s also impossible to be certain how he will handle the downhill sprint course, but he is a very well-balanced individual, who coped well with the undulations at Newmarket.”

STALLION NEWSBRAZIL

DROSSELMEYER TO STAY IN BRAZILDrosselmeyer, one of only eight horses to win a US Classic and the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, has been purchased by Stud TNT and will remain at stud in Brazil. The nine-year-old son of Distorted Humor had been shuttling to the stud for the last five Southern Hemisphere breeding seasons after standing each Northern Hemisphere season at WinStar Farm.

Drosselmeyer’s first Brazilian three-year-olds are led by the Gr.3-winning and Gr.1-placed colt Enologo and the Group-placed fillies Kanton and Estella Rossa.

Campaigned by WinStar and trainer Bill Mott, Drosselmeyer earned $3,728,170 during his racing career, winning the 2010 Gr.1 Belmont Stakes and going on to defeat nine Gr.1 winners, including Horse of the Year Havre De Grace and Champion Uncle Mo, as a four-year-old the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

TIMEFORM’S JUMPING BIBLE IS OUTSaturday’s Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby marks the beginning of the core jumps season and Britain’s top staying chaser Cue Card, who is set to reappear there, features on the cover of Timeform’s 1,024-page annual ‘Chasers & Hurdlers 2015/16’, which has just been published.

The latest ‘Chasers & Hurdlers’ is the forty-first edition of what is ‘jumping’s Bible’ which, as usual, deals individually with nearly 10,000 horses, including every one that ran over jumps or in bumpers in Britain last season, as well as the pick of the Irish horses that were not seen out in Britain. Every horse has its own individual

COLT FROM FIRST CROP OF ORB STAR OF SECOND SESSIONThe Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale continued at Fasig-Tipton on Tuesday and 251 yearlings sold for a total $7,162,700, representing a decrease of 12% from a year ago. The average price also dropped by 22% to $28,537 this time around, while the median fell a sizable 37% from $16,000 down to $10,000.

“All in all I thought trade was pretty consistent and very similar today to yesterday and there are some nice horses tomorrow,” said Fasig-Tipton President and CEO Boyd Browning.

Topping the session was Lot 759, a first-crop colt by the Gr.1 Kentucky Derby winner Orb (Malibu Moon) out of the unraced Zealous Gold (Medaglia D’Oro), who comes from the family of Champion and multiple Gr.1 winner Songbird (Medaglia D’Oro). Consigned by Taylor Made Sales, the May-born bay was purchased by Bo Hunt on behalf of Team D and trainer Tony Dutrow for $300,000.

Earlier in the day Lot 561, a colt by the second-leading first crop sire Gemologist out of a winning Cape Town mare whose dam was the Listed Locust Grove Stakes winner and Gr.2 Bewitch Stakes runner-up Chez Chez Chez (Caucasus), was sold by Four Star Sales to Mike Ryan for $290,000.

Lot 428, a More Than Ready half-brother to the Gr.3-placed Tiznow R J (Tiznow) from VanMeter-Gentry Sales, was knocked down to J Stevens for $230,000. The colt is out of the Listed-placed Ruban Bleu (Broken Vow), a half-sister to the former Hong Kong Horse of the Year and Hong Kong Mile winner Good

month or so and flattened out, going down by a neck to another Haggas inmate, Cristal Fizz (Power). She had won her only previous start at Ascot after being slowly away and has clearly come on plenty, though she apparently shows relatively little at home. Time will tell whether she has pinched a weak race or is a filly with a future, or both. She has the scope to make her mark, so hopefully she will.

TRIGO STAKES, 10F, 3YO+, LEOPARDSTOWNZawraq (Shamardal) was clearly top rated on 111 in what was an ordinary Listed race, but after Flying Fairies (Holy Roman Emperor) had taken over well over a furlong out on the soft ground, the odds-on favourite could never get to her and she passed the post over three lengths clear. She had risen from a mark of 77 to 92 through the season and she will now go higher, with her big black type won. Her connections now have to decide whether to have her fulfil her engagement in the December Sale or see if she can continue to progress up the ladder. She would have to do so to win a normal Group race, even for fillies.

CONDITIONS RACESLowly Catterick, in the centre of the county where the thoroughbred was largely created, the North Riding of Yorkshire, has played host to some useful horses this year, especially from Richard Fahey’s yard, and he brought another potentially useful juvenile to run in a novice stakes over the sharp five on Tuesday, even if the soft ground blunted the speed of the track. Brian The Snail (Zebedee) is anything but, having won what is turning out to be a fair maiden at Pontefract on his debut, over a stiff track on quite fast ground, and he looks as if he could be a useful sprinter next year, as well as a clearly versatile one, the way he demolished his four rivals, two of them winners, albeit quite lowly ones.

commentary, outlining its achievements and summarising its racing character, but the best horses have extended entries – the essay on Grand National winner Rule The World, for example, extends to fifteen pages – and the whole book is lavishly illustrated, bringing a vintage season back to life.

The 2015/16 jumps season shares with 2004/5 the distinction of featuring four horses rated above 180 – Don Cossack (183), Cue Card (182), the brilliant novice Douvan (180p) and Vautour (180). Sprinter Sacre’s remarkable comeback ended with his being rated 179 , that rating high enough on its own for a place in the top thirty chasers of Timeform’s experience. The essay on Douvan looks back at the legendary 1965/6 season in which Arkle, Flyingbolt and Dunkirk were at the peak of their powers, with Mill House making up ‘the big four’ that year.

As well as providing the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to the merits of Britain’s and Ireland’s jumpers (every horse’s commentary is accompanied by its definitive Timeform rating), ‘Chasers & Hurdlers’ does not pull its punches on the major issues of the day. The attack on the ability of Britain’s stewards, who, it is claimed, “all too often turn a blind eye – or seem blind – to non-triers,” – has already caused controversy. ‘Chasers & Hurdlers’ also calls for closer control over those racecourses who seem to put the economic needs to stage their race meetings above everything else. “Exhausted horses virtually walking home, at the end of races run in atrocious conditions, is a terrible advertisement for the game, and could turn into a public relations disaster if it becomes widely perceived as being cruel,” says ‘Chasers & Hurdlers.’’

The book is published by Timeform, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX1 1XF at £75 (post free in the UK) and can be ordered at www.timeform.com or on Amazon.

RACING ROUND-UPLISTED AND CONDITIONS RACES

MERCURY STAKES, 5F, 2YO+, DUNDALKThere were no juveniles in what was a hot contest and seven-year-old Caspian Prince, extraordinarily by Dylan Thomas out of a Rainbow Quest mare, made all at a brisk gallop and held on by a head to win for the 15th time. This was his first victory at this level, however, and he has been well held in his few previous attempts at Stakes level, though he has amassed earnings of well over £400,000. It is difficult to believe he is still improving, but it is possible and he may well head to Dubai.

DONCASTER STAKES, 6F, 2YO, DONCASTERThere was rather a shock in what was a pretty ordinary Listed race in all probability, though the third home is rated 97, as Rosie Briar (Mayson), always in the van, got to the front just inside the last furlong and held on gamely by half a length and a neck, with none of the placed animals coming from off the pace. She had finished fourth on her debut and then won her second start at Haydock Park, but the handicapper was not overly impressed with that, giving her a mark of 78. She certainly belied that and is clearly tough.

RADLEY STAKES, 7F, 2YO FILLIES, NEWBURYThis was not a strong race overall and the favourite and the only filly rated over 100 after two Group places, Glitter Girl (Invincible Spirit), travelled well, but showed perhaps the signs of a busy
