GRECIAN CAN CAP GOOD WEEK FOR SHAMARDAL Shamardal, who was responsible for winners at both Gr.1 and Gr.2 level last weekend, could have another successful Saturday, when Grecian Light lines up in the Gr.3 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood.

The Stilvi Compania Financiera-bred filly races away from Newmarket for the first time, where she is trained by Charlie Appleby and has both won her maiden and finished runner-up to Nations Alexander (Dark Angel) in the Gr.3 Sweet Solera Stakes last time. season, finished third in both the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood and the Gr.3 Chester Vase.

Balding said: “I am very happy with Ormito. He ran a nice race in the Geoffrey Freer and has come out of the race fine. Plans are still very much fluid at the moment, but the St Leger is certainly an option.

“The other race we are looking at is the Gr.2 Prix Chaudenay at Chantilly on Arc weekend. There is a possibility he could run in both, but I think we will do one or the other.”

Ormito was one of 25 acceptors for the world’s oldest Classic, worth a record £700,000 and run over one mile, six furlongs and 132 yards, earlier this week. Aidan O’Brien’s Gr.1 Irish Derby runner-up Idaho (Galileo) heads the ante-post betting market on the back of a decisive victory in the Gr.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on 17th August. The twelve-furlong contest is a good pointer to Doncaster with Milan (2001), Rule Of Law (2004) and Lucarno (2007) all doing the double since the turn of the century.

There is a £50,000 supplementary entry stage for the St Leger on Monday, 5th September, when the five-day acceptors will also be unveiled.

MOORE OF THE SAME AS RYAN RETURNS WITH NEWMARKET WINNERJockey Ryan Moore’s return to action at Newmarket proved to be a success yesterday when his only mount, Spatial (New Approach) won the opening maiden fillies’ contest.

The former champion had been sidelined since the end of July, but bounced back in style with a two and a half-length success on board the Cheveley Park-bred and owned juvenile, who gave her

Sprint Stakes, and the Gr.3 Prix de Cabourg for Alrahma, who almost made it a Gr.1 double for the sire over the weekend when she went close in Sunday’s Gr.1 Prix Morny.

The stallion, who stands privately at Kildangan Stud, was also responsible for Lot 460, a bay colt out of the Swain mare Toolentidhaar, consigned by Rathasker Stud and bought for £100,000 by Blandford Bloodstock at this week’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale.

NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEWNORTH AMERICA

PORTRADE MAKES ALL TO LAND GRADE ONE CHASE SUCCESSThere was a gutsy pillar-to-post success in Saratoga’s Gr.1 New York Turf Writers’ Cup Handicap on Thursday for the Keene Bloodstock-bred Portrade (Trade Fair).

After being comfortably beaten by the favourite Bob Le Beau (Big Bad Bob) over a slightly shorter trip at the same venue last time, the seven-year-old took it up from the off and jumped well throughout.

With Bob Le Beau being pulled-up early on after suffering a fatal injury, the chief rival to Portrade emerged as Andi’amu (Walk In The Park), who chased him from one place behind throughout and, although closing, he could never get to the winner. The winning margin was a length.

Racing in the colours of the Fields Stable, the Elizabeth Voss-trained gelding is a graduate of the 2012 Tattersalls Ireland August National Hunt Sale where he changed hands for €2,500, before being a £50,000 purchase by M Flanagan from Noreen Galvin of The Paddocks at the 2014 Cheltenham November Sale.

He is a half-brother to the hurdle winner, chase-placed and broodmare Kind Heart (Red Ransom) and three other winners and is the seventh foal of his winning dam Portorosa (Irish River). She is a half-sister to the hurdles winner Melange (Alphabet Soup), with the second dam being the Gr.3 Prix Cleopatre winner and Gr.2 (then) Diana Handicap-placed Garendare (Vacarme).

RACING NEWSBRITAIN

ORMITO HAS ST LEGER OPTIONThe progressive German-bred stayer Ormito (Mamool) is under consideration for the Gr.1 St Leger at Doncaster on the fourth and final day of the St Leger Festival, Saturday, 10th September.

The Andrew Balding-trained colt ran a career best last time out when staying on strongly to take second, beaten a length and a quarter, behind older rival Kings Fete (King’s Best) in the Gr.3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes over a mile and five furlongs at Newbury on 13th August.

Ormito, who is owned by Richard Morecombe and former trainer Lynda Ramsden, filled the same position behind Richard Hannon‘s subsequent Gr.3 scorer Ventura Storm (Zoffany) in the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton in July and, earlier in the

pilot an ideal return outing, leading just over a furlong out and running on well after he had asked her to go about her business.

Reflecting on the win, Moore said: “It was nice to come back at Newmarket, as it’s just down the road, and to have an easy day. She’s a nice filly.

“It’s just nice building back into it and while it’s disappointing to miss so much of the peak season, it’s part of the sport.

“I decided it was the sensible thing to stop, unfortunately I missed York which was disappointing, but I wanted to be back for Irish Champions Weekend.

“I’m looking forward to a big weekend at Leopardstown and the Curragh, then we have all the two-year-old races back here to look forward to.”

Dispelling suggestions that he may challenge for another jockeys’ championship, the pilot added: “There are more important things, it’s not a priority for me.

“I was not riding every day anyway, I was only riding four or five days a week and I’ll be doing something similar.”

NORTH AMERICA

PERFECT LADY ELI RETURNS TO ACTION AT SARATOGAThe unbeaten star filly Lady Eli (Divine Park) returns to action at Saratoga today after an injury-enforced absence from the racecourse of almost 14 months.

Back at the place where she made her successful debut a little over two years ago, the four-year-old will put her record on the line against a field of seven opponents in the Gr.2 Ballston Spa Stakes.

Not seen since winning the Gr.1 Belmont Oaks Invitational on Independence Day last year, after which she contracted laminitis after stepping on a nail. She is one of two entries in the contest for trainer Chad Brown, who has won five of the six Graded Stakes races run at the track this summer.

The line-up also includes the British-bred daughter of Excellent Art, Excilly, the Rathbarry Stud-produced Sweet Acclaim (Acclamation) and the Gr.1 Mile Stakes winner Miss Temple City (Temple City), who is trained by Cambridge-born Graham Motion and has been fourth in the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes and the Gr.2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot in the past two seasons.

RACING PREVIEWNORTH AMERICA

EXAGGERATOR THE ONE TO BEAT IN TRAVERS STAKESGiven the prize pool of $1,250,000 it is no surprise that today’s Gr.1 Travers Stakes boasts a maximum field and it looks to be a very competitive contest on paper.

Exaggerator (Curlin) is likely to be a warm order to follow-up his successes in the Gr.1 Santa Anita Derby, the Gr.1 Preakness Stakes and the Gr.1 Haskell Invitational Stakes already in 2016.

The Keith Desormeaux-trained three-year-old already has winning experience at Saturday’s venue and will be tough to topple, although only two of the last 14 Travers winners have succeeded after taking in the Haskell Invitational on route.

Juddmonte Farms-bred Flintshire (Dansili), winner last year for Andre Fabre, flies the flag for British-produced runners in the $1,000,000 Gr.1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday.

The six-year-old will renew rivalries with Twilight Eclipse (Purim), in front of whom he finished when taking this prize a year ago, though it is the former Andre Fabre-trained horse that should once again prove tough to eclipse.

Grand Tito (Candy Ride) has been busy this year, winning his first two starts, including the Gr.2 Mac Diarmida Stakes at Gulfstream Park and his silver medal in last month’s Gr.2 Bowling Green Stakes is evidence of his continued well being. However, he will have to improve again to win this and the Gr.2 Man o’War Stakes and Gr.1 United Nations Stakes runner-up Money Multiplier (Lookin At Lucky) looks to have the potential to be a more serious threat to the market leader.

Roman Approval (Roman Ruler) has not won in seven starts this campaign and appears unlikely to buck that trend today, while the Gleaming Stakes winner Applicator (Henrythenavigator) and the former Pascal Bary-trained Inordinate (Harlan’s Holiday) look to have too much on their respective plates.

PERSONAL ENSIGN STAKESFive four-year-old fillies have been declared to race over the route trip of a mile and half a furlong for this $750,000 purse, where a daughter of Bernardini, Cavorting, is arguably the one to beat.

The Swettenham Stud-bred runner has been well-placed to win seven of her twelve career starts, including two Gr.1s, the

The Gr.3 Iowa Derby winner American Freedom (Pulpit), who finished a place behind Exaggerator in the Haskell Invitational, and the improving Curlin Stakes winner Connect (Curlin), are among his chief challengers.

An interesting contender is the Clearsky Farms-bred Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song), who goes into his first elite level contest on the back of a hat-trick of wins, the latter pair being in allowance optional claimers at Santa Anita and Del Mar. Trainer Bob Baffert clearly thinks plenty of the colt to let him take his chance.

Destin, a son of Giant’s Causeway trained by Todd Pletcher, performed well when runner-up in the Gr.1 Belmont Stakes in June, though has a bit to prove after being a place further back in the Gr.2 Jim Dandy Stakes last time out.

Gun Runner (Candy Ride) has plenty to find with Exaggerator on their Haskell Invitational running, while the Jim Dandy runner-up Governor Malibu (Malibu Moon) is worth another try at this level after his Belmont Stakes fourth.

Gift Box (Twirling Candy) has a length to find with Connect on their Curlin Stakes running and Creator (Tapit) had a few of these behind in the Belmont, but rather blotted his copybook last time out in the Jim Dandy.

My Man Sam (Trappe Shot), Curlin third Forever D’Oro (Medaglia D’Oro), Gr.1 Florida Derby runner-up Majesto (Tiznow), Jim Dandy winner Laoban (Uncle Mo) and Gr.2 West Virginia Derby fourth Anaximandros (Hard Spun) also participate.

SWORD DANCER STAKESAlthough now trained in North America by Chad Brown, the

With Cavorting going in the later Gr.1 Personal Ensign Stakes, a win here for Marking would be the first of a potential big-race double for the stallion Bernardini. This Darley-bred and Godolphin-owned four-year-old son has gone well twice since returning from Meydan in the spring, finishing fourth in the Gr.1 Metropolitan Handicap and runner-up in the Gr.3 Belmont Sprint Championship Stakes, and would not be winning out of turn.

Catalina Red (Munnings) gave cause for optimism when dipping his toe in at this level for the first time behind A P Indian in the Alfred G Vanderbilt and is worthy of his place in the line-up, while Stallwalkin’ Dude (City Place) was placed in last year’s Gr.1 Vosburgh Stakes and got back to winning ways last time in a Saratoga Stakes contest.

The latter’s stable companion, Chief Lion (Wildcat Heir) reopposes after finishing runner-up there, while the gelded Ready For Rye (City Zip) may be attempting to bite off more than he can chew and Tamarkuz (Speightstown) needs to shake-off the disappointment of his Gr.1 Metropolitan Handicap run from last time.

The Mike and Katherine Ball-bred Limousine Liberal (Successful Appeal) was runner-up in the Gr.1 King’s Bishop Stakes on this card last year and Shivarelli (Montbrook) will need to improve on his maiden special weight win from last time to figure. The Truth Or Else (Yes It’s True) and Dannie’s Deceiver (Quality Road) complete the field.

KING’S BISHOP STAKESThe trip remains the same for this Gr.1 contest exclusive to three-

most recent of which was last time out in the Ogden Phipps Stakes, over a similar trip. She has been given a break since a spring campaign and she has a good record when fresh.

Curalina (Curlin) has something to find with Cavorting on their Ogden Phipps running, but either side of that she has landed the Gr.1 Troienne Stakes and the Gr.3 Shuvee Handicap, so there is hope for her supporters.

The Gr.1 Apple Blossom Handicap winner Forever Unbridled (Unbridled’s Song) was runner-up to Cavorting in the Ogden Phipps and now has a 4lb pull for two and a half lengths, so she should be able to reduce that margin.

The Larry Jones-trained I’m A Chatterbox (Munnings) is a proven Gr.1 performer, having scored twice in this grade, most recently in the Delaware Handicap in July. She had the measure of Paid Up Subscriber (Candy Ride) to the tune of four and a quarter lengths that day and with no difference in the weights, there is no reason to suggest that she can’t win that particular battle again.

FOREGO STAKESA P Indian (Indian Charlie) will try to make it five successive wins in 2016 when he takes on eleven opponents in the seven-furlong Gr.1 Forego Stakes.

The gelded six-year-old has shown class, tenacity, and has also had the stewards to thank in-part, during his winning run of four. He stepped up successfully to this level for the first time on his most recent start, when landing the Alfred G Vanderbilt Handicap and looks to be improving with age., while he is unbeaten in three attempts at this trip.

the name of his sire, Congrats, and bids to follow-up her win from off the pace in the Gr.2 Honorable Miss Stakes last time out.

Also engaged are the Gr.3 Chicago Handicap winner Sarah Sis (Sharp Humor) and Linda Linda, a daughter of Bluegrass Hat, though of more interest than both is likely to be Carina Mia (Malibu Moon). The drop back in trip from nine furlongs is likely to see the Gr.1 Acorn Stakes winner to better effect than when beaten behind Songbird in the Gr.1 American Oaks last time out and a win for her would not surprise.

ARCHARCHARCH FILLY & DIALED IN COLT TOP SECOND OPEN SESSIONA filly by Archarcharch and a colt by Dialed In each brought $55,000 to top the second and final Open session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2016 August Yearling Sale.

Lot 672, a daughter of Archarcharch consigned by Marcial Galan, was purchased by Jason Hall. The bay filly is out of Sweet Screamer (Belong To Me), a daughter of Graded Stakes winner Screamer (Roanoke), a half-sister to Graded Stakes winner El Roblar (War Chant).

Quarter Pole Enterprises LLC purchased Lot 838, a dark bay or brown colt by Dialed In consigned by Beth Bayer. He is out of Book The Devil (Notebook), a half-sister to Stakes-placed You Dancing Devil (Joyeux Danseur).

Lot 888, a son of Liaison consigned by Stuart Morris, went to Wayne Detmar Bloodstock Thoroughbreds for $45,000. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Concert Strike (Smart Strike) and is a half-brother to Stakes-placed Tia Flor (Archarcharch).

year-olds, with the winner due to pocket $275,000, and after some deliberation between owners Shadwell Stable and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, the beaten Gr.2 Jim Dandy Stakes favourite Mohaymen (Tapit) has been re-routed to a sprint.

Naturally, he will need a strong pace to be able to bring his stamina into play and he should get that from Drefong (Gio Ponti), Jazzy Times (Discreetly Mine) and Summer Revolution (Summer Bird), who all like to blaze a trail.

The Gr.3 Dwyer Stakes runner-up Economic Model (Flatter) heads up the list of 13 runners, while his conqueror in that contest, Fish Trappe Road (Trappe Shot), takes him on again, but is 6lbs worse off at the weights for a one and a quarter-length margin.

Noholdingbackbear (Put It Back), who was runner-up in the Gr.3 Bold Venture Stakes last time out, makes his Gr.1 debut, while Tom’s Ready (More Than Ready) will look to improve on his two previous attempts in this grade and trainer Dallas Stewart has cause for optimism after the three-year-old won the Gr.2 Woody Stephens Stakes on his most recent start.

Mind Your Biscuits (Posse) has looked progressive this season, and succeeded at the first attempt in Group company last time when landing the Gr.2 Amsterdam Stakes at this venue, while Rated R Superstar (Kodiak Kowboy) has Gr.1-placed form over an extended mile, though he was a winner over this distance in Gulfstream Park’s Gr.3 Carry Back Stakes last time.

Others taking their place in the line-up are Tale Of S’avall (Tale Of Ekati), Bird Song (Unbridled’s Song) and Star Hill (Elusive Quality).

BALLERINA STAKESTen three-year-old fillies line-up for the open-looking Gr.1 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga, with Wavell Avenue (Harlington) and Paulassilverlining (Ghostzapper) both leading lights.

The former won the Shine Again Stakes, named after the only two-time Ballerina winner, last time out, while the latter has shown her best form over these sprint distances.

The elder stateswoman in the field, Sheer Drama (Burning Roma), has Gr.1-winning form to her name, while By The Moon (Indian Charlie) joins stablemate Paulassilverling in the line-up, after success in the Gr.3 Bed o’Roses Handicap over six furlongs last time.

Birdatthewire (Summer Bird) heads the list of runners and already has dual Graded-winning experience over this trip, so can make her presence felt, while Haveyougoneaway will be hoping to live up to CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

Tincture of timeLife on a thoroughbred breeding farm has a steady annual

rhythm. Winter and spring are devoted to foaling and breeding mares. Summer is the season to prepare yearlings

for sale. As the breeding season ramps down, yearling prep begins in earnest. After the fall yearling sales, the later foals are weaned from their mothers and mares and foals are grouped according to age and sex or projected foaling dates for mares. If new stallions are retired from the racetrack, they must be taught their new job in the breeding shed.

The greatest joy of spring is getting to know the new foals as they arrive, at first sight either confirmation or indictment of the mating decisions made more than a year earlier. Two years ago I recommended breeding one of our maiden mares to a successful, but not particularly commercial stallion because, although the mare had shown no talent nor inclination to compete on the racetrack, she was a half-sister to a very talented Gr.1 winner by the sire of that same stallion. Such tactics are, of course, commonplace in the thoroughbred breeding industry. Repeating a successful pattern, or coming as close as one can manage at least offers a marketing hook when the time comes to sell the foal.

I first saw the resulting colt in March of 2015, just a week or two after he was born. It would be a considerable understatement to say I was not impressed. The poor fellow’s hind pasterns were so weak that his fetlocks were on the ground when he walked and his front legs splayed every which way. This is, of course, not that unusual in newborn foals, and when I saw him again a month or so later, he was much improved, but just an average foal, and not what I had in mind when I made the mating.

Over the next several months, the colt had his ups and downs, as he was shipped first to New York, where his mother could be registered for the New York-bred program for her future foals, then to Florida, where all our foals go to winter. Although it was obvious last spring that he was going to be okay, he still looked more like a baby than his contemporaries, and he was sloppy and uncoordinated when he walked, though correct enough for any buyer.

That, of course, is why one moves yearlings to professional consignors to prepare them for the sales. Years of experience tell veteran horsemen which horses need more vigorous walking, which need more feed, which should swim to tighten up their muscles and get rid of excess weight.

One could hardly ask for better evidence of the transformative power of horsemanship than the photo I took this week of that same colt. The homely ugly duckling foal has somehow become a handsome chesnut swan with a swaying athletic walk that is sure to attract plenty of attention at the Keeneland September sale in a couple of weeks.

The well-worn cliché is that time heals all wounds, but, while tincture of time is indeed a remarkable curative for numerous ills,

horsemanship is still required to satisfy buyers. While the standard required at yearling sales may be artificial and arbitrary, it is the world we have created.

Among the 4,000 or so yearlings to be offered at Keeneland next month, our handsome chesnut will not be among the highest-priced offerings. Indeed, we have others sure to bring more money. But time, patience, and horsemanship have transformed him from a gangly, awkward foal into a handsome prince worthy of his heritage. Whether he can run like his Gr.1 relative, only more time, more patience, more horsemanship will tell.

But at least now he looks the part.

ITALIAN RACING AND BLOODSTOCK NEWS Italian Horses, a history of quality

New policy for historic studSirlad (Bold Lad) will forever be in the memories of the Italian racing fans as the best horse bred in the country since Ribot, even if he was little known outside the country. Ridden by Gianfranco Dettori – Frankie’s dad – he won the Criterium Nazionale on his second start at two, over an inadequate 1200 metres and landed the Gran Criterium in a canter. At three he strolled home an unchallenged nine lengths clear in the Derby Italiano and defeated a decent racemare, Infra Green (Laser Light), who had proven international form, in the Gran Premio di Milano, receiving just eleven pounds, instead of the 17 stated in Timeform’s tables. Sirlad was sent to England for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and was second favourite to The Minstrel (Northern Dancer). He never ran at Ascot because of an injury he sustained in his last piece of work at Newmarket that put him out for the season. The Racehorses of 1977 rated him 132, writing in the journal: “… showing himself at least 9lb ahead of the well-known French mare Infra Green. Anything at least 9lb ahead of Infra Green had a good chance in the King George.” Sirlad, who was bred and raced by Commendator Oddino Pietra’s Razza La Tesa, was the horse of a lifetime for racing fans and more than 15,000 people crowded San Siro, on an ordinary Wednesday meeting, just to watch the Champion cantering home on his comeback at four. He left Italy after a disappointing fourth place in the Gran Premio di Milano. At five, after his move to Charles Whittingham in Southern California, he won the Gr.1 Sunset Handicap, breaking the 2400m turf course record at Hollywood Park, and ran second to the Triple Crown hero Affirmed (Exclusive Native) in the Hollywood Gold Cup. Fourty years after his racing days, for the people aged between 55 and 70, he is still “our Secretariat” and even in conversation at the bar you can hear, “Who’s this one, the new Sirlad?”

The Italian “Big Red” was raised at La Tesa, a stud created by the famous Razza Del Soldo at Bagnolo Mella, some 90 kilometres east of Milan. Santo Franchini, an up-and-coming industrialist in the steel sector at the time, took over La Tesa from Oddino Pietra in the early 80s, winning the Gran Premio di Milano with Shulich (Thatch) in 1985. La Tesa is an old-style operation. The estate, a 100-hectare property, is the same as it was in Razza Del Soldo’s time and the houses inside are named after the former Champions bred by the Crespis. Francesca, Mr Franchini’s daughter, lives in Archidamia’s house, named after the legendary filly who won all four Italian Classics and the Gran Premio di Milano in 1936. The yearlings are raised by Mrs Elsa Franchini, who was taught by Enrico Fanti, the Soldo’s stud manager for half a century.

La Tesa was a sportsman operation for a while before they sent their first yearling to the SGA Sales in 2015 after the sale of Spicy Jam (Holy Roman Emperor), one of the very few 2012 foals, the previous year. Spicy Jam turned into a brilliant and precocious

performer for Scuderia Blueberry, winning two Listed races during her juvenile season. The 2015 consignment of four lots included Life At Best (Holy Roman Emperor), who generated a fair profit for Con Marnane. La Tesa retained just two lots, a colt by Canford Cliffs (bought back) and a filly by Exceed And Excel (withdrawn), now in training with Marco Botti. Franco Castelfranchi, La Tesa’s advisor, explained: “The change of policy started in 2011, when Mr Franchini figured that it was unethical to pump his own money into the stud while the workers in his factory were on redundancy review. Most of the broodmares were rested and in 2013, when his factory overcame the crisis, the breeding operation restarted on a full basis with a new policy.”

La Tesa will have five yearlings at the SGA Selected Sale in September, but it is still not a commercial stud. Castelfranchi said: “The yearlings are bred following the old school, with the target of racing, not to have a short term profit and they are not rushed for a sale. They will have a reasonable and moderate reserve price. To be honest, we will offer them and wait for the market’s reaction. The sale will be just a passage in their life, not the day of their lives. There is no preliminary choice; all the yearlings, colts and fillies, are offered. It’s up to buyers! If the price is fair we will be happy to sell, otherwise they will go into training.”

La Tesa’s batch encompasses four fillies and one colt. Castelfranchi said: “The one I would like to retain is the filly (Lot 51) by Intello out of Ekta, a daughter of Danehill Dancer, who won seven races and ran third against the boys in the Gr.3 Premio Chiusura. She is a very classy filly, her sire did very well with his first yearlings at Deauville; ten lots were sold up to €100,000 and two of them for €360,000. Two of the three other fillies are out of black type homebred broodmares and the dam of the third, Gerika, by Galileo, won six times and ran fifth in the Oaks d’Italia. The only colt is by Intense Focus (Giant’s Causeway), out of a multiple winning daughter of Monsun. He has a solid page too, but, more interestingly, is a strong individual and a beautiful mover”.

Forty years after Sirlad’s glory days, La Tesa is a living force of the Italian breeding industry with ten broodmares, most of them black-type performers by high-profile sires, and a new sustainable policy. That is the secret for an endurable success.
