Redwood: From Valle Vista Staging Area, follow the unpaved fire road to the right (west), leading to a foot trail that descends into a redwood forest. After crossing Indian Creek, the trail emerges onto Canyon Road. It picks up again across Pinehurst Road, crosses San Leandro Creek, and winds steadily upslope to East Ridge Trail in Redwood Regional Park.
Riche Loop: This trail is a short, dog-friendly loop, accessible from Valle Vista Staging Area. The trail passes through pasture and scrub habitat and provides a view of the north shore of the Upper San Leandro Reservoir.
Rimer Creek: This trail starts just beyond the bridge that crosses Moraga Creek on Rocky Ridge Trail, approximately 0.4 miles from Valle Vista Staging Area. The trail branches left (east), parallel to Rimer Creek through great birding habitat. It climbs uphill to reconnect with Rocky Ridge Trail. Turn right (west) on Rocky Ridge Trail to loop back to Valle Vista Staging Area, passing horse stables along the way.
Rocky Ridge: This is a fairly strenuous, dog-friendly hike through scenic countryside. The trail begins at Valle Vista Staging Area and ends at Las Trampas Regional Wilderness on Rocky Ridge. The trail is also accessible from Rancho Laguna Trailhead. Choose from a number of loops to extend the length of your adventure.
King Canyon Loop: The trail is accessible from Rocky Ridge Trail, 0.85 mile from Valle Vista Staging Area. The trail winds through oak forests and skirts Upper San Leandro Reservoir. Loop back to Valle Vista Staging Area by following the Rocky Ridge Trail up and down a moderately steep hill. Dogs are allowed.
Carr Ranch Loop: The trail is accessible from Rocky Ridge Trail, approximately 2.3 miles from the Rancho Laguna Trailhead. The trail passes through a range of ecosystems, including live oak woodlands, riparian woodlands along Buckhorn Creek, coastal scrub and annual grasslands. The trail follows a rolling ridgeline before reconnecting with Rocky Ridge Trail. Dogs are allowed.
Rocky Ridge Loop: This trail begins along Rocky Ridge Trail, approximately 3.5 miles from the Rancho Laguna Trailhead. However, more direct access is available via Las Trampas Regional Wilderness. This trail of unpaved fire roads offers a close-up view of Rocky Ridge and splendid views of the lands beyond. The trail is steep in multiple areas.
Ramage Peak: This spectacular route passes through some of the most remote watershed lands in the East Bay. From Chabot Staging Area, cross the service road and follow the path above the Christmas tree farm. The trail zigzags along fire roads and narrow gauge trails through ranch lands, old homesteads and a number of different habitats. The trail climbs up to Ramage Peak and connects to Rocky Ridge Loop.
Dinosaur: From Chabot Staging Area, follow Ramage Peak Trail (0.84 miles) to Dinosaur Trail, and continue to EBRPD Chabot-to-Garin Trail (2.3 miles). The trail provides some challenging climbs and offers spectacular views that make the effort worthwhile. When you reach Dinosaur Peak, you will see the stegosaurus-back rock outcroppings that inspired the trail’s name.
