JULIE TODARO MEDIA ACTIVITY REPORT SEPTEMBER, 2016

The following is a snapshot of ALA President Julie Todaro press and social media coverage secured from Sept. 1 – 30. The Public Awareness Office (PAO) and ALA Washington Office secured more than 242 press articles mentioning Todaro resulting in a circulation rate of more than 600 million. The totals were captured by ALA’s monitoring vendor Meltwater News. Please note that vendor circulation rate is calculated using the number of articles/mentions multiplied by the monthly unique visitors for each media outlet’s website.

According to the Newspaper Association of America, there are more than 1,300 daily newspapers and 5,700 weekly newspapers in the United States, so the following highlights should be viewed as a snapshot of coverage.

INTERVIEWS Chandra Johnson-Evans Deseret National – Sept. 1 (Interview occurred on Sept. 6) Topic: Illiteracy in the digital age

Kantele Franko Associated Press – Sept. 1 Public libraries struggle with drug use, overdose in their facilities https://www.statnews.com/2016/09/10/drug-users-public-libraries/ The American Library Association encourages librarians to get training on interacting with special populations, such as drug users and the homeless, but stresses the importance of partnering with groups such as police and social workers, said Julie Todaro, the association’s president. “Clearly when you have the epidemic that we have and the issues with the patrons that we have, we need to organize assistance,” she said. “That doesn’t mean we ourselves provide it.”

Mike Kasper KCBS Radio - Sept. 10 (Interview conducted Sept. 10) Topic: Drug use in libraries

“Clearly when you have the epidemic that we have and the issues with the patrons that we have, we need to organize assistance,” she said. “That doesn’t mean we ourselves provide it.” AP coverage also picked up by KTRK-TV, Sept. 13. http://abc13.com/news/drug-users-take-advantage-of-public-libraries/1509894/

Ashonti Ford WMDT 47ABC -Sept. 13 (Interviewed Sept. 13) Topic: Drug use in libraries Julie’s headshot and recording aired during broadcast.

Joseph Ward DNAinfo - Sept. 12 3 Out Of 4 CPS Schools Don't Have A Librarian, Union Says https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20160912/downtown/3-out-of-4-cps-schools-dont-have-librarian-union-says Julie Todaro, president of the American Library Association, said the lack of librarians in schools means students are not learning key lessons involving critical thinking and digital skills, which are vital in today's world. "The long-term costs of these cuts —both to students and to Chicago — are higher than any possible savings," Todaro and Audrey Church, president of the American Association of School Librarians, wrote.

Corilee Christou Information Today – Sept. 15 A Big To-Do List for the New Librarian of Congress http://newsbreaks.infotoday.com/NewsBreaks/A-Big-ToDo-List-for-the-New-Librarian-of-Congress-113734.asp Julie Todaro, president of the American Library Association (ALA), has no doubt that Hayden will be successful in moving the LC into the digital age and creating a true national resource for all Americans to use and enjoy. “Dr. Hayden is a people’s librarian, strong, relevant, and extremely capable of rearticulating the library’s importance of place,” she says. “We know that with Dr. Hayden at the helm, the Library of Congress will strengthen its ties with the nation’s libraries and other groups that influence how people access knowledge and information in the digital age. The Library is an extraordinary national and global resource and she will greatly expand its reach in the digital age.”

Mary McCauly Baltimore Sun – Sept. 15 New librarian of Congress Carla Hayden taking over organization in turmoil http://www.baltimoresun.com/features/bs-ae-librarian-of-congress-carla-hayden-20160914-story.html Todaro said that Hayden "is an incredible leader of staff." She cited the much-praised decision to keep the Pratt's Pennsylvania Avenue branch open during the 2015 unrest sparked by the death of Freddie Gray, though the library is located across the street from the CVS store that was looted and torched. "When violence broke out, Carla wasn't anywhere near Pennsylvania Avenue," Todaro said. "She went home and packed a bag and went right over. There are times when it's imperative to lead from the front lines, and she knew this was one of them."

Anh Do Los Angeles Times – Sept. 15 A scene of homeless misery greets patrons trying to use Santa Ana's award-winning library http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-santa-ana-library-adv-snap-story.html Libraries around the country, including in downtown Los Angeles, have long been safe spaces for transients. But Orange County’s homeless population has been increasing sharply in recent years, and the Santa Ana civic center, where the library is located, is now home to an encampment of more than 400 people that the City Council earlier this month labeled “a public health crisis.”

Rich Griset Chesterfield Observer – Sept. 15 School Board: Waiting for final report in book debate Library association pens letter, Sen. Chase takes to the airwaves http://www.chesterfieldobserver.com/news/2016-08-24/Front_Page/School_Board_Waiting_for_final_report_in_book_deba.html Julie Todaro, president of the ALA, said that the letter was issued with the intent of supporting librarians and the review process that Chesterfield is undertaking (the full letter can be read on page 9). “We are very interested in assisting people in clarifying what school librarians do and the value that they bring to schools,” Todaro said. “We were also concerned that some of the language called for the librarians’ firing because they had suggested a title. They weren’t requiring it, they weren’t forcing people to read it; they weren’t doing anything other than their job.”

Sarah Glazer CQ Researcher - Sept. 15 in-depth reporting on news for libraries and media (No outcome yet)

George Lynch Bloomberg BNA - Sept. 19 (Interview with Jim Neal)

Sarah Tanksalvala Thomson Reuters - Sept. 23 (Interview scheduled)

Jillian Melchior Heat Street - Sept. 27 Microaggressions in College Libraries Are Now a Thing https://heatst.com/culture-wars/microaggressions-in-college-libraries-are-now-a-thing/ It turns out that the microaggression obsession among librarians isn’t unique to the University of Minnesota. Julie Todaro, president of the American Library Association, says librarians have become much more aware of microaggressions and “cultural competency” in general in recent years. “When you need to get at the heart of what someone wants, and when you need to get the item or information you need to make them successful, you need the best communications available. Our profession has a set of values and standards, and to follow those values, we need to learn the most effective and best speech,” she says.

Alex Groves Press-Enterprise - Sept. 28 Libraries open new chapter in helping homeless http://www.pe.com/articles/library-814817-homeless-libraries.html Belvedere-Cricket is one of many homeless people who spend time in libraries in the Inland Empire and across the nation. The facilities, known as places for literacy and study, also have become refuges for the homeless. Julie Todaro, president of the American Library Association, said a growing base of homeless visitors has required libraries across the country to analyze how to better serve those people.

Ian Cummings Kansas City Star - Sept. 30 Arrested Kansas City librarian gets support from national library group http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article105940127.html The Kansas City Public Library, which has protested the arrests earlier this year of a librarian and a patron during a public

event, gained a show of support this week from the country’s largest library association. The American Library Association issued a statement praising the Kansas City library for supporting free speech and promising help as the library opposes the prosecution of its director of public programming, Steven Woolfolk, and library patron Jeremy Rothe-Kushel of Lawrence.

Letters, Statements, Quotes Letter: If Chicago is a 'city of readers,' then it should support its librarians Chicago Tribune – Sept. 10 http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/letters/ct-if-chicago-is-a-city-of-readers-then-it-should-support-its-librarians-20160909-story.html Chicago public school students heading back to class this September will be missing a key part of their instructional team thanks to a drastic reduction in school librarians across city schools. According to reports, only 1 in 4 CPS schools now has a school librarian to instruct students in critical thinking skills and manage libraries and library resources.

Carla Hayden to be Sworn In as First African American, Woman to Head Library of Congress NBC News - Sept. 14 http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/carla-hayden-be-sworn-first-african-american-woman-head-library-n615116 "She is uniquely qualified to modernize one of the greatest cultural institutions in the world," said Julie Todaro, current president of the American Library Association. "Carla is a perfect example of making content available for her constituents and bringing it to the 21st century," she said.

Heroin Use in Libraries a Growing Concern Sept. 15 – Campus Safety Magazine http://www.campussafetymagazine.com/article/heroin_use_in_libraries_a_growing_concern As opioid abuse continues to be a problem in the U.S., library officials across the country are seeing an increase in drug-related incidents at their institutions. “Clearly when you have the epidemic that we have and the issues with the patrons that we have, we need to organize assistance,” American Library Association President Julie Todaro says. “That doesn’t mean we ourselves provide it.”

Libraries Across the Country Are Becoming Havens for Heroin Addicts PJ Media – Sept. 17 https://pjmedia.com/parenting/2016/09/17/libraries-across-the-country-are-becoming-havens-for-heroin-addicts/ Public libraries are becoming havens for drug offenders -- especially heroin addicts, according to a new report. The AP says the "unfettered public access, quiet corners and nooks, and minimal interaction with other people" that make libraries ideal for studying and reading [and I would add viewing porn, since libraries have become safe spaces for porn addicts in recent years] also make libraries a popular place to shoot up heroin.

ALA Executive Director Fiels Announces Retirement American Libraries - Sept. 20 https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/blogs/the-scoop/keith-michael-fiels-retirement/ ALA President Julie B. Todaro and the other officers have been working with Fiels to ensure a smooth transition and expect the selection process for the next executive director to take through next summer. “Over the next couple of weeks, I will be providing everyone with an update on the process by which the Board will work with Council, membership, and staff to select our next executive director. We will keep everyone well informed as we move ahead,” Fiels said.

SIBF/ALA Library Conference Turns Three American Libraries – Sept. 23 https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/2016/09/23/sibf-ala-library-conference-turns-three/ As ALA’s most ambitious international professional development collaboration to date, the library conference will be hosted at the 35th SIBF, November 8–10 at the Sharjah Expo Centre in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The shared

location provides an opportunity for attendees to combine professional development with exploring and acquiring materials for their libraries. In 2015, SIBF hosted more than 1.2 million visitors and 1,547 publishing houses from 64 countries that exhibited more than 1.5 million books in 210 languages.

A Big To-Do List for the New Librarian of Congress Information Today – Sept. 27 http://newsbreaks.infotoday.com/NewsBreaks/A-Big-ToDo-List-for-the-New-Librarian-of-Congress-113734.asp Julie Todaro, president of the American Library Association (ALA), has no doubt that Hayden will be successful in moving the LC into the digital age and creating a true national resource for all Americans to use and enjoy.

Libraries open new chapter in helping homeless Press-Enterprise – Oct. 2 http://www.pe.com/articles/library-814817-homeless-libraries.html Belvedere-Cricket is one of many homeless people who spend time in libraries in the Inland Empire and across the nation. The facilities, known as places for literacy and study, also have become refuges for the homeless.
