The Chili Cook-off! & Awards Night!

Hello there, I am Anna P. and today I will tell you about what went on during our chili cook-off!

At the Chili Cook-off, the Marimba Band played some amazing music. Some of the songs were,

The Happy Song, Ranchera, Bad Monkey, and Simon. The 6th Grade Band also played at the Chili

Cook-off. They also did an amazing job!

If you were there, you could have bought your dinner of Chili with the fixin’s that our head cook

Teresa made. You could do taste tests on the Chili Cook-off contestants & vote! We had 3 contend-

ers and the Grantham Boosters supplied the prizes for the winners! You could also pay for ice cream

& pie if you wanted it. The funds raised will go to the 5th Grade Boat trip.

They also handed out some awards to the staff and to students for reading and recognition

of character type awards. They were handed out from 6:30 to 7:30.

The Boosters also provided rocks and paints to paint rocks for the LC Valley Rocks! The kids

and even adults enjoyed this so much! We will probably do it again! So get your art thinker on!

Last, but not least, the hallways had amazing artwork the students worked hard on. I think

the students that did the artwork, have some great talent! We hope all had a great time!

Other Community News: Fruit and Vegetable Grant This is an amazing program where we students get an afternoon snack! It is govern-

ment funded being a Title I school. We have had fresh carrots, oranges, peas,

lettuce or salad, broccoli, apples, cauliflower, grapes, bananas, pears, and celery. If

you get a chance, ask what snack your kids have had lately! That might tell you what

they really like in fruits and vegetables! Remember, 5 a day keeps you healthy!

Here are pictures at the Chili-Cook-off / Awards Night! Well that’s all bye!

Hey, Grantham Grizz-Kids, this is Parker W., Angela D., and Emma M. Today we are go-ing to tell you about Mrs. Gottschalk. We have asked her lots of question but first, let us in-troduce Mrs. Gottschalk. She is an ELL (English Language Learner) Assistant in our Clarkston School District. That means she helps students learn English. These students are usually from families who speak English as a 2nd language rather than their first language. They could have just moved here from another country or more like it, the parents may have come from another language speaking culture. We some-times have exchange students here at the high school from other countries for a short-term time wanting to learn more English. There are two ELL teachers in our district- Teacher Sherry Bergman and her assistant, Mrs. Gottschalk. First, we asked her “How long have you been helping students speak and write

English?” She said, “27 years!” Then we asked what her teaching background is, and she said, “Bilingual, which means I can speak 2 or more languages.” The languages that she speaks other than English are Span-ish, and a little bit of German, Native Indian- Navajo.

The ELL teachers in our school district work with students that speak many different languages. They are Vietnamese from Vietnam, Chinese from China, Spanish-from Mexico, Napoli from Nepal, Amharic-from Ethiopia, Indonesian from Indonesia, French Creole-from Cameroon, Thai-Thailand, Tagalog- from the Phil-ippines, Marshallese from Marshall Islands and Finish-from Finland.

We asked Mrs. Gottschalk a few questions for fun (not school related). First, her favorite color is yellowyellowyellow. If she could go on vacation, where would she go? She said, “To Disneyland, Anytime!!!” She has three kids, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. The last question that we asked her was, “Do you have any pets?” She told us that she has two dogs and one cat.

Mrs. Gottschalk is a bright and lively person who loves working with the English Language Learner students in our schools! That’s all we have this month and make sure if you see Mrs. Patsy Gottschalk in the halls to say “Hi!” Or instead, you could say,

“Hola!” in Spanish. We hope you enjoyed our interview with Mrs. Patsy Gottschalk!

The Marimba Band had a marvelous performance at our Chili Cook-Off/ Awards Night! The families enjoyed it so much. They are gearing up for some more performances soon. SPORTS-PROFFESSIONAL FOOTBALL!

BY MARCISIO N. & SIDNEY B.

This past month, we have been following the playoffs in Professional Football. These

are the teams that have been in the play offs Bracket: Seahawks, Raiders, Lions, Packers,

Chiefs, Falcons, Cowboys, Giants, Steelers, Patriots, Texans, & Dolphins. We were sad not to

see our Seahawks go on and then we know Mr. Call had high hopes for the Packers since

he is a Cheese Head Fan!

Now, we are down to the Falcons and the Patriots. We went around getting a very

quick poll of who wanted who to win and these are the results: Falcons got 14 votes and

the Patriots got 6 votes. Hope you all have a fun Super Bowl Sunday no matter who wins!

Good Luck Falcons!
