Meet the Town Council
As our summer months begin, we have so
much to be thankful for. I encourage you to
read this Eatonville Speaks
Newsletter in its entirety.
You will be happy to note a
number of accomplish-
ments to be proud of.
We also want to wish all of
our fathers a Happy Fa-
ther’s Day! What else is
special about the month of
June? Juneteenth! What is
Juneteenth? It is a day
known as the Independence
Day or Freedom Day, that
commemorates the June 19, 1865 announce-
ment of the abolition of slavery in the U.S.
State of Texas and more generally the Emanci-
pation of Enslaved African-Americans
throughout the former Confederacy of the
Southern.
The Emancipation Proclamation 95, was a
Presidential proclamation and executive order
issued by United States President Abraham
Lincoln on January 1, 1863. It changed the fed-
eral legal status of more than 3.5 million en-
slaved African Americans in the designated
areas of the South from slave to free. Unfortu-
nately all of slaves didn’t officially know about
Emancipation Proclamation 95 until June 19,
1865, two years later. Twenty two years later
in 1887, The Historic Town of Eatonville was
incorporated.
The Town of Eatonville will come together to
celebrate Juneteenth with a presentation by
Baruti Akiiki Abdallah-Nosakhere at the next
Town Council Meeting on Tuesday, June 19,
2018 at 7:30 p.m.

Healthy Eatonville Day Kick-off Walk & Free Light Breakfast will be held on Thursday,
June 6, 2018 at 7 am at Healthy Eatonville Place 101 S. College Ave. Eatonville, FL. In
addition from 8 am to 2 pm, plan to take part in workshops, yoga, fit camp and more at
Healthy Eatonville Place!
Join us to celebrate the great strides that have been made in the health of our community
as Mayor Eddie Cole proclaims June 7 “Healthy Eatonville Day”! Our health journey be-
gan in 2012 when research showed that 24% of Eatonville residents had diabetes – and
nearly 40% had high blood pressure..
Eatonville residents responded in many positive ways
including advocating for the development of a health and
wellness center. With support from the Town of
Eatonville and funding from our friends, The Winter Park
Health Foundation, Florida Hospital and Healthy Central
Florida, Healthy Eatonville Place was born.
Fun Facts: Since Healthy Eatonville Place opened,
they’ve identified 88 participants with prediabetes and
have helped all but one from becoming diabetic. They’ve
also helped individuals lose up to 58 lbs. in 12 months
and helped 80% of people with uncontrolled hyperten-
sion to reduce their blood pressure.
Comprehensive health has become a high priority for the
entire Town. We’re addressing social determinants of
health: Education, Employment, Healthy Food Access
and Housing to manage and improve health. Through the
efforts of many, the path to better health is being paved.
Some of these partnerships include Valencia Community
College, Hostdime, Orange County Public Schools, Heb-
ni Nutrition, Florida Hospital and others.
Residents continue to take matters into their own hands
by increasing access to fresh produce through their own
yards and gardens. While strolling through beautiful
Eatonville, you’ll quickly notice the array of edible gar-
dens and our own community garden which provides free
produce to residents. Our residents are on the move togeth-
er to create a healthier Eatonville!

Hungerford Elementary School as a kid and I have a lot of great memories that will
always live in my heart. It's going to be tough to see the old Hungerford Elementary
School go! What's most important to me is that our kids are going to be more
equipped and stabled.”, says Councilman Tarus Mack

ULI URBAN PLAN WORKSHOP
By: Jasmyne Reese, CRA Neighborhood Coordinator
On Monday, May 14, 2018, The Town of Eatonville became the first municipality in the State of Florida to host it’s own Urban
Plan for Public Officials Workshop through the highly regarded Urban Land Institute (ULI). This workshop highlighted the
“fundamental forces that shape and affect the built environment ... in the real estate development process.” - Urban Land Insti-
tute
14 residents, business owners, board members and elected officials saw redevel-
opment through the lens of a municipality and a developer. Three teams were cre-
ated and tasked with developing a small area within a modeled city. Each group
was given a packet containing a Request For Proposal from the Town, as well as
wants and demands from the community, organizations, and churches dictating
how the area should be transformed. Each person was assigned a role; Planner,
Community Liaison, Neighborhood Liaison, Marketing Coordinator, and Finance
Director. The goal was to redevelop an area that produced financial needs and
services of the Town as well as the wish list of the residents and stakeholders.
Each group presented their vision statement and development proposal to a mock ‘Town
Council’. Affordable housing, job creation, community services and amenities were the determining factors for the Town Coun-
cil to consider. In the end, one group presented a concept that aligned with the historic character of the Town, achieved the fiscal
goal and services of the Town and won the exercise.
“I thought it was very educational and I think that the people that have to vote on
these kinds of things should take the workshop.” George Williams, Planning & Zon-
ing Board Member.
On behalf of the winning team and the Town of Eatonville, we would like to thank
our instructor Kellee Seif and ULI for organizing this influential workshop.

ment at the University of Central Florida and

There is a strong pride traveling through-
out The Historic Town of Eatonville! It is
another year of celebration for all of
Eatonville’s High School and College
Graduates. You have been committed and
faithful to the many tasks put before you;
for which the diploma and/or degree re-
ceived is well deserved!
The future hopes and plans of our gradu-
ates are shaped by the very choices they
make, the determination to tackle every
goal within their reach and the fortitude
to withstand every challenge that comes
along their way. From Pre-K to 12th
grade and for some completing college,
many graduates are mapping their course
to greater achievement and a successful
& rewarding life. Their choices have
been well made and are proving to make
each goal a reality. Job well done!
The 1887 legacy continues and as the 1st
Black Incorporated Municipality in
America, our community is strong and
our heritage of progressive education is
the priority of the Eatonville family.
Each graduate now has the opportunity of
passing the torch of achievement to those
coming behind them through their nota-
ble example, their encouragement to see
others excel, and their inner courage to
face new challenges in life. The
Eatonville community stands with every
graduate as they embark upon the next
phase of their journey.
“Congrats to all the graduates. Great achievement
for each of you on accomplishing all the necessary
requirements needed to walk across the stage. I'm
extremely proud of you for all the hard work, dedi-
cation, and commitments you've displayed year
after year. Continue chasing your dreams and
never give up on anything you believe in, no mat-
ter how tough it gets in life. " STAY TRUE TO
YOURSELF!" , says Councilman Tarus Mack.
PROUD EATONVILLE GRADUATES!

Preservation Life is an effort to inform and
educate our residents on ways to foster qual-
ity of life for their families and others in the
Town of Eatonville.
IMPROVING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR
The Historic Town of Eatonville
The Town of Eatonville serves appro-
priately 700 wastewater customers. The
wastewater collection system serves
direct service connections within the
municipality. The collection systems
includes four lift stations, connected to
gravity sewers, and force mains.
The “Park Master Light Station, locat-
ed west of Interstate Highway 4 is the
master station that all other stations
convey to prior to being pumped to the
Altamonte Springs Regional
Wastewater Treatment Facility. This
Lift Station is a duplex submersible
pump station and is equipped with 230
volt, 25 hp, 40 amp pumps with each
pump having a pumping capacity of
800 gallons per minute (gpm). An emer-
gency Generac generator is on site for
back-up power needs. The lift station
also contains emergency bypass piping
for direct pumping and equipped with
the SCI-Text alarm system that sends
texts to on-call staff if there is an issue.
In 2015, the Town had an assessment of
the Park Master Lift Station performed
by the Florida Rural Water Association
(FRWA). The report indicated a need
for replacement. CPH, Inc. looked at
the condition and adequacy of the exist-
ing Park Master Lift Station and
agreed with the stated assessment.
Aligned with the vision of Mayor Eddie
Cole, Public Works has worked vigor-
ously to secure the necessary funding to
ensure replacement of the Park Master
Lift Station. This will contribute to a
better improved infrastructure for the
Town and its residents.
The Town of Eatonville has been
awarded an USDA grant loan in the
total amount of $741,220 ($203,000
loan and $ 538,000 grant) for the Park
Place Master Lift Station Project.
