Eaton’s EV21 voice sounder helps to ensure staff safety at BMW

ChallengeThe Munich automobile manufacturer BMW Group places top priority on the safety of its employees. In 2005, the company therefore decided to install alarm systems at all its sites for evacuating the production floors, in order to bring employees safely out of the building in the event of danger such as fire or potential risks of explosion, either from gases or vapours in the air.

BMW Group decided to use a motor siren as a standard sound for the evacuation alarm. The alarm sound for evacuating the production locations must be identical at all factories in the German speaking region. Specifically, these are the sites in Munich, Dingolfing, Berlin, Landshut, Regensburg, Wackersdorf, Leipzig, Steyr and Graz. “The relevant sounder must be highly available and run smoothly”, explained Gerhard Daum from the BMW Group Architecture and Building Projects Department. He is responsible for the planning preparations as well as the basic structural and technical facilities.

In 2008, Eaton developed the EV21B sounder as a one-off for the factory floors. BMW Group currently has approximately 900 of these robust devices, which use the sound of a motor siren – the sound sequence is stored on a memory chip as an MP3 file. The EV21B sounders are installed at a height of eight metres in the industrial halls, but their sound and volume have little variation.

“The motor sirens’ non-adjustable volume of 110 dB is hugely problematic if you want to use the sounder in small, separate workshops or offices”, explained Gerhard Daum. When all of BMW Group’s attempts at turning down the volume themselves failed, the company asked Eaton to develop a new sounder for the offices and workshops at all of its factories in the German-speaking region.

Challenge:BMW Group need to provide employees on the factory floor and in adjacent areas with a timely warning in the event of emergencies, fire or explosion risk and evacuate them from the hazardous areas in an orderly manner.

Solution:BMW Group uses the standard sound of a motor siren as an evacuation alarm at nine sites in the German-speaking region. In these factories, Eaton’s robust and reliable EV21 Voice sounder is used.

Results:The sounder can be infinitely adjusted so the volume can be adapted for factory offices or smaller, separate workshops. All employees are now warned by the same siren sound and their safety in the evacuation is ensured.

SolutionThe requirements were clear: the new sounder should have the same sound of a motor siren in order to ensure the safety of employees during evacuations. The volume also had to be infinitely adjustable in order to suit the installation location.

Eaton therefore developed the EV21 Voice sounder for BMW Group, a more advanced version of the EV21B. At the request of BMW Group, Eaton used the same housing but improved the electronics. The power consumption is also lower. The device consists of plastic-coated, seawater-resistant aluminium casting. The loudspeaker is made of an impact-resistant and cold-resistant synthetic material and is installed as a fixed component in the housing. The operating temperature of -25°C to +60°C and the robust design make it suitable for use even in harsh environmental conditions.

The EV21 Voice generates the BMW Group siren tone digitally; played when a supply voltage of 230 VAC is applied. The device comes pre-programmed upon delivery. The siren sound is stored as a WAV file on the device’s 2 GB internal micro SD card. The

memory card also includes installation software with operating instructions customers can install on their PC.

BMW Group can thus create additional WAV files with signals for other purposes and play them back on the micro SD card. The software also allows programmable sound files that can include both voice messages as well as signal tones in one composition.

ResultsBMW Group currently uses around 1,600 EV21 Voice sounders in the offices and separate, smaller workshops at the factories in the company’s German-speaking locations. “The volume of the EV21 Voice can be flexibly regulated from 0 to 110 dB and each device can be individually controlled. This allows us to also use the EV21 Voice in offices or the smaller, separate workshops at our factories, thereby ensuring the safety of all employees if the evacuation alarm is sounded”, said Gerhard Daum.

Beacons

Eaton’s range of weatherproof flashing beacons and status lights, including single colour or multi coloured options, can be either flashing, steady-state indicators or rotating units, providing solutions for harsh safe area environmental conditions.

These may be used to warn of potential hazards or indicate the status of plant items, gas and oil leaks and evacuation alerts in safe areas. The signals can be operated as stand-alone units or be incorporated into a wider system, such as a fire panel. Many units can also be customised with a choice of sources or lens colours.

Eaton offer a comprehensive range of LED beacons, which have the added benefit of low energy consumption, an increased lifespan and an option of flash patterns.

Product overview

The X10 range sounders are industrial signaling alarms that are available in 4 fade resistant body colours, and high and low voltage variants. They are certified to IP66 and IP69K, and verified to operate at extreme temperatures -30°C to 70°C, and therefore suitable for use in harsh conditions where a robust industrial sounder is required. The X10 sounders comes with an Eaton 10 year Extended Warranty and offers up to 120 dB(A) with 102 tones, and a versatile 4 stage alarm to allow you to retrofit to an existing installation.

EV21 Voice sounder

The EV21 V Voice Sounder is a compact electronic signalling device designed for both industrial and commercial applications for either internal or external use.

Applications include production line and process control announcements or warnings, timed voice announcements and many others.

The EV21 V can provide up to eight different speech announcements that can be proceeded by an alert tone to attract the attention of the message recipient.

An internal 4 GB micro SD memory card provides the non-volatile memory for the storage of both alert tones and messages accordingly. Message and alert tones are stored as WAV files and can be assigned different volume levels.

The programming and configuration of the EV21 V is achieved using a PC based application for ease of programming and configuration even when installed using a via laptop via a USB interface.

WP Twin LED

Eaton is pleased to announce the launch of the new TWIN LED audio visual signalling device using high intensity LED technology. The unit is designed to be used as a stand alone sounder beacon combination unit or in conjunction with a telephone.

Designed to provide both audio and visual signalling and warning in high noise environments, the TWIN LED permits clear audio and visually signalling in industrial environments.

The TWIN LED offers both improved audio performance with a higher ring volume up to 102 db(A) and greater brightness and visibility by using high power LED technology instead of Xenon flash tubes.

The TWIN LED has an ingress protection of IP66 and is designed to withstand the harsh environments onshore, offshore and marine.

As the mounting dimensions are unchanged from previous model, it means it is reverse compatible and can be simply used to replace and upgrade current installations.
