ALdGATe MAde uP One Of The seven GATes Of LOndOn and it once sat roughly around dukes Place. Perhaps the most historic monument of the area is the Aldgate Pump – the Grade II listed structure can still be found where fenchurch street and Leadenhall street meet, marking the symbolic start of London’s east end.

An account of Aldgate is not complete without understanding its patterns of social migration, particularly the area’s Jewish history. fleeing to London to escape persecution in eastern europe, the Jewish community settled in Aldgate from

1181 until their expulsion in 1290 by King edward I. Oliver Cromwell encouraged Jewish people to return in 1656 and if you look closely, you’ll spot plaques or religious symbols across many buildings. Bevis Marks synagogue, for example, is the oldest synagogue in the uK, founded in 1701.

The Indian subcontinent also sent vast numbers into Aldgate. The east India Company was instrumental in the development of the east end and its Bengali link, bringing across Asian seamen and servants from 1757. In the area you will find Altab Ali Park while Bengali street signs along Brick Lane help to identify the unique character of the area. The east London Mosque, Whitechapel Road, is also one of the biggest in europe, accommodating more than 7,000 worshippers.

Aldgate is also home to several churches, all worth discovering for their unique architecture and historical significance.

st. Botolph Without Aldgate for instance was designed by the same architect as Mansion house and survived the Blitz in 1941 when a bomb pierced the roof but failed to explode.

The demographic shifted again after the dock closures of the 1960s and warehouses were cheap for artists to rent. Tracy emin and Gilbert and George are representative of modern British artists who still live in a part of London with true authenticity.

What remains is a melting pot of cultures and experiences. from curry houses to kitsch coffee shops, there are enough foodie spots in Aldgate to take you from morning to evening.

coffee house, 68 Whitechapel high street, is also another good spot for a decent breakfast, at affordable prices, from a full english breakfast to omelette, scrambled eggs or granola and yoghurt.

understandably,

some people still crave a traditional fry-up in the morning, and for them there is peter’s cafe, 73 Aldgate high street. The no frills, no pretences place delivers a full english with friendly service. there’s no wonder people keep going back for more.

A little more inconspicuous, is one under lime, 1 Leadenhall Place, hidden in the basement under the famous Lloyd’s building. Its breakfast menu contains all the favourites, eggs and pastries, and includes a yoghurt bar where the orange blossom honey and sliced banana is particularly special.

nearby, the crutched friar, 39-41 Crutched friars, also does a really reasonable breakfast, including eggs rarebit, which is often difficult to find on menus.

for a spicy start to the day you have got to check out nana biryani restaurant, 14 Whitechapel Road. specialising in classical royal dishes from old dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, it is the breakfasts that are something you cannot find in many places. vInTAGe BOuTIques piled high with a myriad of both precious and kitsch items, curry houses serving authentic Bangladeshi cuisine and contemporary art galleries continue to make Brick Lane an iconic global destination.

A manufacturing street since the 15th century, a conversation about Brick Lane is not complete without mentioning that the area is heralded as London’s curry capital and affectionately dubbed Bangla Town.

The street is also home to some famous Bagel shops that have a history on the street linked back to generations of Jewish residents. Recently the street has been broadening the food offer, including french, Argentinian and Turkish restaurants and also new artisan cafes open throughout the day.

Perhaps the most recognisable feature of the lane is the Truman Brewery, founded in 1683. Today, the Brewery is a thriving arts and media quarter, packed with independent shops, galleries, markets, bars

and restaurants that includes the weekend food market, which sees over 248 stalls showcase designers, artists and food from around the world.

The area is also praised for its thriving art scene, with many noted British artists setting up home in the area. Turner Prize-winning artists Gilbert and George are residents of fournier street, just off Brick Lane as is fellow Turner Prize-winner Tracey emin.

Brick Lane is also the hub of a world-famous street art movement, where walking tours are held, observing the works of well-known graffiti artists such as Banksy.

The lane continues to be cited in popular culture, from author Monica Ali’s famous novel Brick Lane to the hit movie Legend.

The Bangladeshi eaterie includes a must-try lamb biryani. There is space at the back to eat, but as a takeaway it works best as they heat up your food ready to go. menu includes ribs, BBq baby chicken, and a must-try mutton shoulder served with blue corn tortillas and tomatillo salsa. The smoke bone marrow starter, made from gratinated beef shin bones and serves on bread, is also a winner.

for those who are only interested in cocktails 37 Jewry is an intimate underground setting actually situated within London’s original city walls. This luxury champagne and cocktail bar is even better visiting on Monday to friday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm when cocktails are two-for-one.

But for the cocktail connoisseur the alchemist, 6 Bevis Marks, boasts an extensive list of drink drawn out like a periodic table. vodka, gin, rum, whiskey is concocted into

stunning creations to be enjoyed all evening long. They do everything from the mojito to the woo woo, but even include some appetising newcomers such as the bubblebath - a mix of tanqueray gin, aperol, chambord, lemon, apple and fairy liquid.

head over to apples and pears, 26 Osborn street, on a friday night for a cocktail and a boogie. There is a party pretty much every night of

the week. Always jammed-packed with people, you are sure to have an eventful time at this joint.

A real homely feel is unmistakable in the hoop and grapes, 47 Aldgate high street, saved from the Great fire of London in 1666. It is one of the few timber-framed building to have survived. now the Grade II listed building now is a homely pub that offers pub grub, beers, wines and a selection of malt whiskies and cigars. People can’t help but love this quaint pub that has stood the test of time.

And now for something a little bit different. The discount suit company sounds like a place to find a bargain three-piece, but do not be fooled. This hip, new bar at 29A Wentworth street is serving cocktails with traditional methods and old fashioned recipes. Classics include the delicious Conference Call which consists of whiskey, smoked and salted maple syrup, walnut bitters and toasted orange.

Or why not put each other to the test at the old tea warehouse, 6 Creechurch Lane, with an impromptu mid-afternoon game of pool. To impress your date with a little bit of history, the site itself can be traced back to 1592, where the Creechurch

Monastery once stood, and is believed to be built on a graveyard.

A real conversation starter is the dispensary, 19A Leman street, once the eastern dispensary hospital, erected in 1859 to provide health care for the poorest eastenders. Transformed into a restaurant in 2013, it now serves some of the best pub food in the city including their infamous pie and mash.

seriously impress your date with a trip to wilton’s music hall, 1 Graces Alley, one of very few surviving music halls, dating back to the 19th century. Team the visit with a meal in the victorian supper Rooms, which includes crab and avocado toast and chicken crostini.

for a birthday party to remember steam & rye, 147 Leadenhall street, is a rather unique spot in the area. The brainchild of model Kelly Brook and club entrepreneur nick house, the venue is designed with The Great Gatsby’s 1920s in mind, taking inspiration from new York’s Grand Central station. If the £60,000 hydraulic-powered rodeo bull isn’t enough to convert you, then maybe the grilled 1.5lb Canadian lobster or s&R’s famous popcorn shrimp with peanut dipping sauce

TRAdeRs WAKe AT The CRACK Of dAWn TO eReCT TheIR sTALLs, sporadically spread over the roads in and around Middlesex street, Cobb street and Wentworth street.

After unloading their merchandise, it takes what seems like a second for the streets to be lined with rows of the market’s specialities - clothing and household goods.

The area has always been revered as a textile hub, dating back to the 17th century when between 40,000 to 50,000 huguenots escaped persecution in france, seeking refuge in england.

The huguenots began the east end’s silk-weaving trade, which influenced the fashion trends of english aristocrats, adopting silk as their material of choice.

It was not long before 18th century fashions, such as imported printed calico from India and mechanised weaving, caused a decline in industry before Jewish immigrants, skilled in tailoring, revived the area.

even as communities migrate, shop

names alter and garments modernise, the Rag Trade link remains unbroken, maintaining a presence with the influx of Bangladeshi immigrants who still occupy leather shops and haberdasheries.

Petticoat Lane Market has long been considered the life and soul of the area, sustaining Aldgate’s link to the textile trade since the 1750s.

Anyone looking for the original Petticoat Lane may not have realised that in 1830 the name was changed to Middlesex street, and remains the same today.

Alan sugar, the billionaire entrepreneur, began his business career boiling and selling beetroot on a stall. from humble beginnings sugar set up consumer technologies company Amstrad, joining the “billionaires club” in 2015, and has a current fortune of £1.15billion.

A dAY exCuRsIOn ThAT MAY WeLL InvOLve TRIPs to the galleries will need energy food. One fail-safe for kids to ensure their bellies are full is American food. Close to all the action is big moe’s diner, 89 Aldgate high street, an authentic 1950s American diner, which serves everything from hot dogs to burgers. The special kids’ menu includes chicken strips, beef triangle burger, kids’ Texan burger and a cheese and tomato pizza, all dishes served with chips. But there are also hot dogs on the menu, not to mention the soda floats.

chicago rib shack, 60 Wentworth street, has a kids’ menu to rival all. Beef burgers, fish cakes, chicken strips and their specialty BBq ribs are all on offer alongside a fun puzzle page to keep them occupied while they wait.

Just as messy as ribs, are the notorious chicken wings at sticky wings, 40 Brick Lane, which the kids will undoubtedly love. With a simple menu, you choose you quantity of

Alongside special occasion cakes there are handmade tarts and desserts. The range includes lemon cake, vanilla, strawberry and black forest cheesecake and even pear tart, rum baba and tiramisu.

cuisine for kids always seems to be Chinese. You cannot go wrong with cirilo noodle bar and grill, 4 Cable street. Maybe you are on your way to the Tower of London or one of the many crypt museums. If so, this Chinese restaurant serves stir fry wok noodles, duck and pancakes, chicken skewers and ice creams. It is all reasonably priced and gives the kids the energy boost they need.
