Winter Greetings from EATCentre Update
Tena koutou katoa and win-
ter greetings to all our EAT
newsletter readers.
We hope you’re keeping warm, but
feeling heartened that the days are
slowly getting longer.
The last few months have been very
busy at EAT, with numerous chang-
es taking place. Rachel Lattimore,
our Youth Coordinator for the last 8
years, resigned from this role in Julyand has taken up a new job as a lec-
turer in Social Work and Counselling
at CPIT. Rachel had huge passion
for her work with young people and
families and for the education work
that she did in schools and the com-
munity, and she spearheaded many
initiatives over the course of her time
at EAT. While her leaving has been
hard for the agency to adjust to, and
she is sorely missed by many of her
clients, we’re excited by her new ca-
reer and wish her all the best for the
future.
The Youth Coordinator role has been
lled by two new counsellors, Ellie
van de Gronde and Paula Partington,
who have been settling in over the
last few weeks. Ellie and Paula come
to us with a breadth of relevant skills
and experiences and are excited to
join the team.
In July, EAT embarked on a much-
awaited new system of governance
for the organisation. As a result of le-

gal advice and much internal discus-
sion, EAT’s constitution was amend-
ed at an SGM of our membership,
transforming the organisation’s previ-
ous collective model of governance
into a more conventional governance
committee.
This change offers EAT greater
safety and clarity in respect to gov-
ernance and we welcome both the
involvement of new committee mem-
bers and the continued support of
previous collective members. If you’d
like to have a say in decisions about
governance at EAT and directions of
the organisation, please do become

For 22 years, two letters dened me – ED (noun, verb,
plural, singular, life threatening).
Use the same ght that pushes you
to run that extra mile, deny that last
crumb, or ght the people who carefor you. Turn it around to ght for your
protection, your sanity, your right to
belong in this world.
Find a haven which embraces the
small voice inside that only ever
wanted to be heard and understood.
The best thing.... you get to choose
- perhaps a friend, therapist, furry
friend. Don’t settle until you nd the
place that makes you feel whole and
nurtured. Dont be afraid to seek this
place when times are hard. You oweit to yourself and life is never as tough
when you're on your own side.
I speak from experience and years
of physical pain and heartache. My
maps? Fantasic therapist, loving
partner, wonderful furry companions
and belief in myself. I have 4 havens -
see if you can nd 5 :-)

As if labels were etched on my skin -
fragile, damaged, chronic, incurable, I
was treated differently and lived a lifefull of misery and missed potentials. I
believed this was all I was capable of
because I was not fully whole.
Then a light switched on and life
became accessible to me. I began
to live and participate to the best of
my capabilities. True, still wearing the
labels, but no longer believing that
I couldn’t change or be part of this
world. I started to realise that I had
the power and could choose to ght
the system, the illness, the recovery, but at the end of the day I am left with
me and therefore needed to change
my battles.
Recovery doesn’t end with a magic
number or closed le. In fact the jour-
ney never ends. But you can choose
your destination and with the right
skills, maps and determination (the
one you used to get on this track),
you can go anywhere. Don’t ever
let someone tell you that it can’t be
done.

Paula Partington
I have worked in counselling and psychotherapy since 1990 in
the UK and New Zealand, with children, adolescents, adults andfamilies in heath, social work and school settings, as well as non-
governmental organisations.
Ellie van de Gronde
Hello, Kia ora, Talofa lava,
Goedendag,My name is Ellie van de Gronde and
I am one of the two Youth Coordina-
tors who have the challenging task of
replacing Rachel at the Eating Aware-
ness Team. I am very excited to start
this job as I enjoy working in such a
wonderful team and such a positive
and caring work environment.
Originally from the Netherlands, I
love meeting people from all kind of
different cultures, and if I left yourlanguage out in the greeting, just let
me know. I like to include everyone,
whatever your background is.
My work background is in school
counselling, having been a school
counsellor for over ten years, rst at
an Auckland College, then at different
Christchurch High Schools.
I love working with young people
and their families, and I have a great
respect for the strength and resilience
that I have seen in young people in
my contacts over the years.
I see it as my task and my privilege
to encourage and support people in
their process of healing and growth,
using trust, humour, insight, patience
or just a listening ear.
My practice is based on many ther-
apeutic modalities, which I have ac-
quired in my studies in Psychology
and Psychotherapy and many other
special courses. I adapt my way ofworking depending on what you bring
and what you feel up to.
If you are a former client of Rachel,
I will gladly support you in the next
step on your journey, and if you are a
new or future client I look forward to
meeting you.
With warm greetings,
Arohanui,

creativity to do this in a safe, non-
judgemental therapeutic relationship.
As well as being at EAT, I balance my
time with a private practice, teaching
and supervising, and with my fam-
ily and hobbies. I particularly like the
outdoors lifestyle, which is one of the
things that attracted me to come to
New Zealand in 2005.

I am enjoying settling in at EAT and
getting to know people here. I am
looking forward to using my passion
for Transactional Analysis psycho-
therapy to enable change for people
who come to the service. I believe
that TA is a creative and valuable ap-
proach to work with eating and body
image issues, which I have experi-
ence of working with throughout my
career. My belief is that people are
able to work through their difculties
and solve problems, and I aim to en-
able them to use their potential and

Rachel’s Farewell
As some of you may know I have resigned from my role as Youth
Co-ordinator at EAT. I have enjoyed working at EAT and am sad
and excited to be changing roles.
I am moving on to Lecture at the
CPIT in the Human Services Depart-
ment which will be a new and exciting
yet challenging role.
In my time at EAT there have been
many changes and challenges in my
role. I have loved developing my skills
in family therapy, as I believe that
educating and supporting families
provides a better outcome for youth. I
have had the privilege of working with
so many amazing young people andso many loving families and the im-
print of that work will be forever on
my heart.
I would like to thank all the profes-
sionals who I have had the honour of
working along side, as your collabo-
ration has ensured individuals and
families get their needs met more
effectively. To all the individuals and
families who I have journeyed with,
who have had the incredible cour-
age to become vulnerable and face
life’s challenges, I will always be im-
pressed and inspired by your honesty
and integrity. I wish you all love and
happiness and hope you enjoy the
magnicent lives you all deserve.
A nal note to the wonderful EAT
team (including the honorary Nickei),
I have enjoyed working with all the
different faces who have come and
gone over the past eight years as I
have learnt from all of you. Thank you
for your passion and desire to keepEAT a holistic agency that supports
people on their journeys. I know how
hard you all work!! Remember to take
care of yourselves!

Big Ups to the Girl
Guides!
More than 20,000 UK Girl Guides
are signing a petition calling on David
Cameron, the British Prime Minister,
to require every airbrushed image
in magazines to be stamped with awarning.
The Girl Guides launched the cam-
paign in response to their own re-
search study, which revealed that half
of 16-21 year old British girls would
consider plastic surgery to change
their looks and that 42% of 14-16
year old girls had been on a diet.
A compulsory labelling system
that distinguishes more natural bod-
ies from those that have been ‘per-fected’ through computer manipula-
tion would alert girls and women to
the ction and impossibility of the
standards of beauty promoted by
magazines. It’s also a step to making
magazines and other forms of media
recognise their ethical responsibilities
to their readers.
Well done Girl Guides for campaign-
ing for change around body image
messages and for bringing these is-
sues to the political stage.
