1 Introduction

1.1 AudienceThis document is intended for users who are responsible for running system administration operations. Werecommend that only persons with the necessary knowledge and corresponding training perform the systeminstallation.Please read this manual thoroughly and carefully before starting installation of EasyDirect PAM. Make sure, youare familiar with all components within the system. It is particularly important that you are familiar with thedatabase tools and hardware components.

1.2 Purpose of this DocumentThis document provides installation and maintenance information for EasyDirect PAM. We recommend thatprior to installation, upgrade or maintenance of the software you read the related chapters in this document.

2 EasyDirect PAM System OverviewEasyDirect PAM can be installed within your organization either as standalone or as a distributed system. Wheninstalled as a distributed system, all the asset details are stored in a centralized location (database) and all theEasyDirect PAM clients available in the network can view and share all the assets.EasyDirect PAM software consists of four main components:• Client UI Application (User Interface Component).• Background Application (Windows Service Component).• Business Server (Windows Service Component).• Database Server (Microsoft SQL Server).

Client ApplicationThe Client application is the main interface through which you can view the assets and other instrumentsconnected to your PC. You can configure the way EasyDirect PAM behaves using this application.

Background applicationThe background application resides with the client application on your PC and automatically runs even whenthe PC is not logged in. The status will be indicated with an in the Windows taskbar. The background appli-cation maintains the connection to the RFID readers and to the database through the Business Server. It logsdata received from the connected readers regardless of whether you are logged in or not. To view data stored inthe database, Client Application has to be started and depending on your user rights, information can be lookedat. The collected data are shown in different views and tables.• Assets• Readers

Business ServerBusiness Server runs automatically in the background when the PC is running. This component runs either onthe same PC (Standalone) or on a different PC (Distributed system). It acts as a broker/bridge between thedatabase server and the Client applications installed across the network.Business Server periodically connects to the GPSS server and retrieves• new pipette models available in the market,• certificates of pipettes for which service/calibration is done through Rainin along with other details.Business Server also validates your license subscriptions.

3 Preparing the installation

3.1 System RequirementsEasyDirect PAM can be installed either as a Standalone system, where all the components along with thedatabase are available on the same PC or as a Distributed system, where each components resides on adifferent PC. EasyDirect PAM clients can be installed in multiple PCs connected to a Business Server.

3.1.1 ComputerThe following tables show the minimal and the optimal hardware requirements for running EasyDirect PAM.However, the hardware requirements depend heavily on the number of connected readers / type of readers andthe operating rate of the readers along with the network capabilities.If the CPU supports Hyper Threading, you can double the available cores when calculating the hardwarerequirements. A Dual Core CPU would therefore be counted as a Quad Core.

For Distributed systems, we recommend installing the Business Server on a PC that is always on, as it will beconstantly polling the GPSS server to synchronize asset and service data.

3.1.2 Supported Operating SystemsThe following list shows the supported operating systems of EasyDirect PAM.

3.1.3 Supported SQL ServerEasyDirect PAM will install an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express Edition to create database if yourPC does not have any SQL Server installed earlier or does not contain an Instance EASYDIRECT.The users can also connect to an already existing Microsoft SQL Server. Details on how to connect to anexisting database server is listed under Distributed system section.

3.1.4 Additional RequirementsYou need to disable "Hibernate" and or "Standby" option of your PC running Business server, as EasyDirectPAM does not support "Hibernate" and "Standby" mode. You will find more information, on how to deactivatethe "Hibernate" and "Standby" mode under: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730/en

3.1.5 Additional Software installedThe following third party software are required by EasyDirect PAM to run. The installation will install thenecessary components automatically.

3.1.6 ReadersEasyDirect PAM supports the following RFID Readers with the corresponding configuration. The Readers have tofulfill the requirements to operate with EasyDirect PAM.

3.1.7 Virtualized EnvironmentsEasyDirect PAM is not tested in virtualized environments. However, if rules are followed on how to connect/redirect USB/Bluetooth devices in such an environment EasyDirect PAM is supposed to run. Please note that ifthe Business server is installed on a virtual environment, then unless it runs, Business server will not be able toconnect to METTLER TOLEDO Rainin Server and retrieve any asset details.

3.1.8 Supported LanguagesEasyDirect PAM and SmartStands support their individual list of languages. Mixed languages does not harm theoverall system from its intended operation. The following languages are supported:

3.2 PipettesEasyDirect PAM supports Rainin RFID pipettes (manual, electronic, single/multichannel) as well as non-RFIDpipettes (any brand).

3.3.1 BalancesEasyDirect PAM supports retrieving QuickCheck reports from XPE and XSE balances connected through network.Support for a RS232/Serial connection directly from the balance is not available.

3.3.2 Smart tagsEasyDirect PAM supports Smart tags to be affixed to non-RFID pipettes (both Rainin and non-Rainin) tosimulate the pipette to behave like a RFID pipette.

3.3.3 Method CardsEasyDirect PAM supports Rainin Method Cards for the usage in conjunction with non-RFID pipettes to storeQuick Check method parameters.

3.4 System BackupYou are solely responsible for an adequate backup mechanism of all aspects of EasyDirect PAM. Important isto have a backup of the SQL database as well as the certificate folder, which can be found underC:\Users\Public\Mettler Toledo\EasyDirect PAM\Certificates

EasyDirect PAM does have a simple database utility that comes pre-installed. Read more about this in themanual, which can be found on

4 InstallationEasyDirect PAM can be installed as a Standalone System where all the components are installed and madeavailable in the same PC or as a Distributed System where every component can be installed in different PCbased on your requirement.You need to run the EasyDirect PAM installation EasyDirectPAMsetup.exe as an administrator.

Installation will first check for pre-requisites and try to install all the required and missing 3rd-party componentsand windows services which are necessary for EasyDirect PAM to run. During this process your PC may berestarted and takes several minutes to complete.

After the pre-requisites have been installed, the installation starts automatically. In case of the installation doesnot start automatically (after a restart), please run the setup again.You will be welcomed with the following wizard to start installing EasyDirect PAM.

And then with the EULA information which you need to accept in order to install EasyDirect PAM.

Once accepted, you can select the type of system (Standalone or Distributed) you wish to have.

Where choosing Standalone system, lets you install all the components on to the same PC and make you self-sustained and choosing Distributed system, lets you spawn across the network.

4.1 Standalone systemStandalone system lets you install all the components on to the same PC. On clicking next, installation will thenproceed to install the SQL Server and other components as shown below:

If your PC already has SQL Server installed, then the installation will not create an instance for EasyDirect PAM.All the components (Business Server, Client…) are installed on to the same PC.

Associated data and log files will be created and updated in C:\Users\Public\METTLER TOLEDO\EasyDirect PAM.

After successful installation, please restart your PC (if prompted).

4.2 Distributed system

4.2.1 SQL Server Instance InstallationFirst, you have to select the SQL Server instance option if you wish to create a database.

The following screen is shown where you can enter the Instance name to be created:

Once selected, the database instance is installed on to the PC.

4.2.2 Database Maintenance Tool InstallationThe Database Maintenance tool is used to perform a backup and restore of your database along with otherfeatures.

Note• the tool has to be installed on to the same PC where the database is installed to take the most of it.• the Database Maintenance tool will also work for the user with

– 'DBOWNER' access for the database– 'DBCREATOR', 'Alter any login' and 'View Server state' accesses for the instance

The installer checks for a valid Database instance before you can install the tool. You can chose the databaseinstance from the list provided.

Once the database instance and the database are selected, the installer proceeds with installing the DatabaseMaintenance tool on to your PC.

4.2.3 Business Server InstallationFor the distributed setup, we strongly recommend to get an IT admin with domain knowledge involved as itcould require domain admin rights to setup the server.

Note• a Business Server installation is possible without the "SYSADMIN" access to the service account user• the permissions below should be available for the user running the business server

– 'DBCREATOR' to establish connection between Business service and DB Service– 'DBOWNER' to Backup and restore the database using third party tools– 'Alter Any Login' to modify/repair the business service installation

To install the Business Server, select the corresponding option from the Component Selection screen.

The following screen is displayed where you• can enter the domain user details that has Admin privileges in order to make the Business Server run

seamlessly• connect with the Database server or

• select "NTAUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE" (default) in the Service Account field.

Once the Service account is chosen, the installer proceeds with the database installation where you have tochoose the SQL Server instance or edit the Instance name if the SQL Server instance is installed in a different

subnet with the help of PC name or IP address. If the SQL Server instance is installed with SQL Authentication,you have to provide the SQL Authentication details that have full access to the database.

The installer then proceeds with installing the Business server and the database instance on to the specifiedlocation.

4.2.4 Client Component InstallationTo install EasyDirect PAM Client on to your PC, choose Client option from the Component Selection screen.

You will be prompted for a Business server address as shown in the following screen:

• Choose the desired Business Server address to which the Client is to be connected.• Choose the Business Server from the same subnet or edit the Business server address if you are in a

different subnet with PC name (or) IP address of the PC in which the Business Server is installed.

Note• You can have multiple Business servers in the network and hence choose the desired one correctly. Once

selected you cannot change the Business server and need to run the Installation again and modify theBusiness Server.

After choosing a Business server, the client components are installed on to your PC.

After successful installation, restart your PC (if prompted).

4.3 Updating an existing EasyDirect PAM Installation (v1.0 / v1.1 to v2.x)It is not directly possible to upgrade from the existing EasyDirect PAM v1.0 or v1.1 to the new version v2.0 andabove. You have to do the following before installing the latest version:1 Export all data (Assets, methods…) to an Excel file.2 Uninstall the existing version.3 Install the new version of EasyDirect PAM.4 Import all data. (See user manual for more details on how to perform import as the existing structure may

not be compatible with the new structure and there are certain restrictions on how to perform import).Once the new version (v2.0 and above) is installed, the application automatically checks for new updateseveryday (if connected to the internet) and informs you and lets you install the update. You can also manuallycheck if a newer version of EasyDirect PAM is available from the About window.

In addition, this functionality also allows checking if a newer version of the SmartStand firmware is available.EasyDirect PAM is capable to update the SmartStand's firmware whenever a newer firmware version isavailable.

4.4 Updating EasyDirect PAM Installation (v2.0 to v2.x)Once the new version (v2.0 and above) is installed, the application automatically checks for new updateseveryday (if connected to the internet) and informs you and lets you install the update. You can also manuallycheck if a newer version of EasyDirect PAM is available from the About window.

In addition, this functionality also allows checking if a newer version of the SmartStand firmware is available.EasyDirect PAM is capable to update the SmartStand's firmware whenever a newer firmware version isavailable.

Note• When installing a new version of Easydirect PAM (v2.0 and above), the existing database will be automat-

ically upgraded (if applicable).

4.5 Logging in for the first timeThere are two ways to get started with EasyDirect PAM: Using Single Sign On (SSO) or signing in via manualsign-in.

§ If you have never logged in to EasyDirect PAM before or you still have to set up EasyDirect PAM for the firsttime, you will have to use the manual sign-in procedure.

1 From the desktop, open EasyDirect™ PAM by clicking to manually sign-in (or) in the start menu, selectMETTLER TOLEDO > EasyDirect™ PAM with Login.

2 Use "Admin" for both user name and password (capital A).3 Change the password to a unique password right afterwards.4 You can now start setting up the SSO user accounts for future log-ins.If your SSO account has been set up by your IT Administrator, you can access EasyDirect PAM directly from thedesktop by clicking . No login will be required and the application loads based on the user rights assigned toyour profile (done by the admin). You can see your user rights by clicking on the account settings icon (upperright corner where it reads your login name).

5 Separate Driver Installations

5.1 USB Drivers

5.1.1 SmartStandConnecting the SmartStand via USB cable to the PC will automatically install the required device driver onWindows 7 and 10.However, if for any reason the automatic driver installation does not work you may download and install thedriver from http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm.Download the driver from the site, run the installation and then connect the SmartStand. A reboot might berequired after the driver installation.Also, note that you need to wait until the drivers are installed successfully. You will get a notification on thestatus of the driver installation. Once the drivers are installed successfully, you need to plug out and plug inagain the USB cable for the EasyDirect PAM to detect the Smart Stand.

5.1.2 FlexScan ReaderUsing the FlexScan Reader via its serial interface using a serial cable to the PC does not require any driverinstallation.If you are using a USB Serial cable, ensure that a null modem/gender changer adapter is used and that thedrivers of the USB Serial cable are installed before plugging in the cable the first time.After successful driver installation, you will see an additional (virtual) COM Port in your windows system.A reboot may be required after the driver installation.Please note that in some PCs after recovering from Sleep/Hibernate (particularly when using a docking station),the port does not work properly though the port is still available. You have to unplug and plug in the cable forthe communication to resume.

5.1.3 BT DongleTo communicate with SmartStands either the built-in Bluetooth from your laptop or a supported USB-BT donglecan be used. As dongle we recommend to use the LM506 from METTLER TOLEDO on the PC side.Dongles tested successfully with EasyDirect PAM:• LM506 (Broadcom stack)• ASUS USB-BT400 (Broadcom stack)• Trendnet TBW-106UB (CSR with Win stack)• Startech USBBT1EDR4 (CSR with Win stack)• LAIRD ST820 (TDK with Win stack)Driver for the USB-BT dongles come with the dongles. However, if you need to download and install separatelyyou can find the driver for the LM506 USB-BT dongle here: http://www.lm-technologies.com/downloads/software/After successful driver installation, you will see an additional (virtual) COM Port in your windows system.A reboot might be required after the driver installation.

6 License activation and management

6.1 License managementEDPAM can be tried out for 60 days. After 60 days the software needs to be registered, regardless of whetheryou are using the free or a paid version. In the main screen toolbar you will find the activation status of ourlicense. The icon indicates the license activation status and the remaining days before which you haverenew your license. The icon turns to warn you that the remaining activation period is less than sixty days(< 60 days) and turns to when the remaining period is less than 10 days (< 10 days).After the license expires, the following error message is displayed. After this you cannot add or change anydetail until you renew the license.

6.2 License typesPlease note that you can try each license edition up to 60 days without activating it. This is especially handy totest a distributed setup within your organization. One can use the same license key twice, even on differenthardware if needed. This option is meant for reinstall purposes only. Be aware though that with the re-use of akey, the installation on the old hardware will get deactivated on the activation portal and connectivity to theserver - in case of a distributed scenario - will be lost for the instance.

6.2.1 License editionsThere are different license editions, each with their own possibilities depending on license type and activationstatus. You can try out the software for 60 days without the need for activating it by means of a license key.Functionality for the trial period will be restricted: You will not be able to test the connectivity of your system formodel list downloads or certificate downloads.

6.2.2 First time vs renewal licenseFor each license edition there are two types of licenses:

• First time license: required to activate your license subscription, valid for 365 days upon activation.

• Renewal license: required for each renewal of your existing license, valid for 365 days upon activation.Days left from the first time license roll-over to the renewal license (if the renewal license is of the sameedition).

6.2.3 Distributed vs standaloneFor the license (re-)activation part there are a few important nuances between a distributed and standalonesetup.

• (Re-)activation of license:– Stand alone: the activation of the license key is done on the PC on which the EasyDirect PAM instal-

lation runs. The key is connected to the hardware ID of the PC.

– Distributed: the activation of the license key is done on the business server of EasyDirect PAM. Noactivation needs to happen on client level, once the business server component is installed and theclient points to the activated business server.

• Connectivity:– Stand alone: None

– Distributed: Provided (given an active internet connection exists for the business server). In case of areinstall of the same license key on a new IT system, connectivity will be dropped on the old system andactivated on the new IT system.

6.2.4 Upgrading or downgrading license editionsIf you want to upgrade or downgrade your license edition, you should do so at the end of your license validity.Notice you can change prior to the license end date, however the days left on the old license will not roll over toyour new license. Make sure you purchase the first time license part number of the down or upgrade of yourlicense, not the renewal part number. The effect of downgrading or upgrading your license edition on your userexperience, is described below. The licensing portal will create a new registration for your system in combi-nation with your new license edition. Since you do not renew your old edition in either case (down- orupgrade), the old license will expire at the end of its effective lifetime and get deactivated for your system on thelicensing portal.

6.2.5 Combining or reassigning licensesIf over time you have purchased several licenses that need to be combined under one activation portal sign-inaccount or if you need an existing license to be re-assigned to a new activation portal sign-in, you will need tocontact METTLER TOLEDO Rainin support. Only support can do this for you; there is no possibility for you tocombine or re-assign licenses in your activation portal account.

6.3 How to access the (re)activation process?Both for first time activation after install or renewing an existing license, the same (re)activation process isbeing followed. Accessing the license activation process differs slightly between a first time activation and arenewal. For the first time activation, the license activation process is part of the install (continue to the sectionfirst time install).

To access the activation process after a successful install, one clicks on the icon in the main screen toolbar.The following screen with all licensing information is displayed.

You can add a new license by clicking on the icon. You can remove an existing license by clicking on the icon. The license can be activated by clicking on the icon from the toolbar; a wizard is then displayed whichwill guide you through the process of activating the license.

Note• You can have only one license information in the list before you can activate.

• View the license information by clicking on the icon. The following screen is displayed.

• You change the edition during the demo period or viewthe licensing details.

6.4 License activation during first time installationAfter installing the EasyDirect PAM application and running it for the first time, you will be prompted to activatethe license or to run the application as demo for a fixed period of time to evaluate the software.

The following window appears when you start the application for the first time. You can enter the valid licensekey which you have purchased, activate the license or you can evaluate the software for the next 60 days.

6.4.1 Activating a License using Automatic method

§ You need to have an active internet connection to activate your license automatically.

1 Select the Automatic (internet connection required)option and click on the icon.ð The wizard will then move to the next step as

follows: You need a customer profile to activate the license.

2 If you already have a METTLER TOLEDO softwarelicensing portal profile choose Use existing userprofile option or if you are new/first timer then chooseCreate new user profile option.

6.6 License activation errors and resolutionsThe errors below are primarily related to errors in the license activation process. If you experience errors duringsetup, beware that most errors are SQL related. Your first resource in this case is the SQL support site ofMicrosoft (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730/en) as often times these are not related to functionality ofEasyDirect PAM. In case you continue to have issues, you can reach out to METTLER TOLEDO support. Forfurther error messages information, please consult the "Error Messages" section in the User Manual ofEasyDirect PAM. You can find this document under http://www.mt.com/rainin-sstanddocs.

Licensing errors

7 Known behavior

7.1 RFID Reader not detectedTypically, when both LabX direct Pipette Scan and EasyDirect PAM are used simultaneously. As LabX directPipette Scan tries to force close the RFID Reader.Please close the LabX direct Pipette Scan and Unplug the RFID reader and wait for 10 Sec and Plug the RFIDreader to PC. Now EasyDirect PAM will be able to communicate with the RFID reader.This is true any other applications which may attempt to communicate with the RFID Readers.

7.2 FlexScan Reader not detectedIf using the serial COM Port on a docking station, EasyDirect PAM might not be able to establish a connection.Please try to avoid using a docking station or use a USB Serial Cable instead which creates a virtual COM onthe computer.

7.3 SQL Server Installation IssuesRefer to Microsoft support for various SQL installation issues and resolutions.
