Photosynthesis is the process by which plant leaves make carbohydrates. Sunlight, CO2 and water are converted into carbohydrates and O2 by the action of chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of the plant. Plants growing indoors under artificial light often lack enough CO2 to efficiently photosynthesize. When plants are able to maximize the process of photosynthesis, the result is larger plants with larger yields.

ExHale cultivates CO2 24 hours a day with no need to refill bottles or use expensive CO2 production units. The power of ExHale lies in the mycelial mass inside the vented cultivator. This mycelial mass cultivates CO2 and the one-way breather patch releases CO2 continually for up to 6 months.

Does CO2 help with clones and rooting?An often overlooked and under studied aspect of plant response to CO2 is on the below ground processes. When exposed to increased CO2, roots have been observed to become more numerous, longer, thicker, and faster growing in many plant species. When cloning plants, root growth appears 3-5 days sooner with CO2 enrichment versus without. Although some things are known about root responses to CO2 enrichment, much remains to be learned. Nevertheless, it is clear that plant roots, like other parts of the plant, typically do better in CO2 enriched air versus ambient air.

What does light have to do with CO2?Photosynthesis has two parts. The light dependent reactions and the light independent ones. The light dependent part is the use of light to steal electrons from water. This is the process that produces oxygen. The light independent part is carbon fixation. Plants produce CO2 during respiration when they break down sugars just as humans do. They do this day and night, but during photosynthesis they tend to take more CO2 out of the air than they put in. They reduce CO2 output during the carbon fixation steps of the light-independent reactions of photosynthesis. Both processes go on all of time, except carbon fixation tends to be more active during the day. They only release Oxygen during the day since they require light to do it.

Does CO2 really improve yields or just make for a healthier plant?The answer is both. The goal of CO2 enrichment is to reduce the time from seedling to harvest and to speed up growth and increase yields. Plants grown with elevated CO2 are more able to resist insects and diseases, which makes for a healthier plant. In a study, lettuce was grown in a greenhouse with ambient air versus lettuce grown in a greenhouse with CO2 enrichment. The test showed the lettuce grown in the greenhouse with ambient air was ready to harvest in 59 days. In the greenhouse with CO2 enrichment the lettuce was harvested in 48 days. By weight the CO2 enriched greenhouse lettuce weighed 30% more. In studies here at our farm, we have found that by supplying tomato plants with elevated CO2, those plants produced 20% more fruit (more tomatoes) than those plants that did not receive the elevated CO2. By harvestable weight the plants receiving more CO2 out produced those without by 25%. Tests performed on strawberries showed that strawberries grown with elevated levels of CO2 contained more sugars and physical mass to support a greater number flowering sites. The fact that there were more flowering sites led to a greater number of strawberries being formed and therefore led to more overall production.

Can you have too much CO2?Too much CO2 can be detrimental for plants. When CO2 levels rise to high, the plants ability to perform transpiration during photosynthesis is reduced. With lower transpiration rates, fewer nutrients are drawn through the plant, thus less food enters the plant and growth slows down. High CO2 levels can cause necrosis spots to appear on leaves. These dead tissue spots are an invitation for bacteria and mold to appear. The bacteria and mold feed on the dead tissue and can cause plant damage, lower yields and in some cases cause crop failure. It has been shown that CO2 levels around 1200-1500 ppm provide for optimal growth. With levels above this you are only wasting CO2 and potentially asking for trouble.

ConclusionCO2 is often overlooked as not being a necessary additive for indoor gardening. While plants can survive without it, you are not maximizing your gardens potential. Even slight elevations can be of benefit for your garden. With ambient air, CO2 levels hover around 400 ppm. Raising this level to 1000-1200 ppm will give you great rewards. When beginning CO2 enhancement in a garden the first noticeable thing you will see is the fact that your garden is greener. This is proof that your garden is benefiting from the CO2 you are providing. Greener plants mean more Chlorophyll is present in the leaves and shows that more photosynthesis is taking place..

SM-90 may be used as a wetting agent in both field and hydroponic applications.

In hydroponic systems: Apply 2-3ml of SM-90 to each gallon (1ml per litre) of nutrient solution on a weekly basis, or whenever solutions are replaced.In foliar sprays: Dilute 1 part SM-90 with 5 parts water to prepare a foliar spray. May be repeated every 3 days for up to 3 spray applications.

Shake well before using.

Top Tip: Add neem oil and 80% water to get an excellent solution to combat pests such as spider mites and gnats.

Furthermore, potassium is important for the opening and closing of the stomata, which enable the drainage of excessive heat.

Calcium often appears in the cell walls and membranes and plays a special role in the ion-reactions within plants. Calcium is transported in the plant by means of water conduction (xylem). In situations with a high humidity or in a compact crop the rate of conduction is small and can lead to a deficiency of calcium. A deficiency of calcium leads to softened cell walls which manifests itself immediately in an increased sensitivity to fungi, and the dying off of young leaves.

One of the elements that is indispensable in Bio Nova’s line of liquid mineral fertilizers is magnesium. Magnesium forms the reactive nuclei in the chlorophyll, which converts light energy into chemical energy (ATP and ADP). A deficiency of magnesium manifests itself in chlorosis (slight decolourisation) between the nerves of old leaves and also an early dropping of leaves.

Citric acid is essential for the so-called citric acid cycle. During this process, plants convert applied fertilizers into the energy carriers ATP and ADP. These energy carriers then pass over energy to the stem, the leaves and the flowers. Plants make citric acid themselves, but a supplement has demonstrable positive effects.

This is a quick guide based on their best practices for use of the Myco-Fusion product line.

Use Myco-Fusion Green 150 Endo Mycorrhizal Inoculum to dust your wet roots prior to planting. The mycorrhizal spores in Green 150 will colonize the roots of the plants over time, increasing the root mass; allowing for more nutrient uptake. This is the key to larger, healthier plants and increased fruiting and �owering yields. Green 150 also includes other micro-organisms in its holistic matrix that will aid in the growth and health of the plant. We recommend a minimum of 1 tbsp per plant, but again, more is better. Dust the roots over your planting hole so none of the product is wasted.

Use Myco-Fusion Bio-Jolt after planting and periodically through the lifespan of the plant. Bio-Jolt is a complex blend of bene�cial micro-organisms that stimulate growth and overall plant health. Mix 1 tbsp of Bio-Jolt to 32oz of water or nutrient / fertilizer mix. We suggest shaking not stirring to suspend Bio-Jolt in the liquid (a 32oz Jar with a lid works great). A cup of liquid, to a pint (16oz), per plant based on plant size should provide measured plant response. This should be repeated every 10-14 days. We also have growers adding Bio-Jolt to their hydroponics system with great results (application rates vary depending on the hydroponic method).

Myco-Fusion Hydro Green 110 is a micronized Endo Mycorrhizal powder. Hydro Green 110 can be used in most Hydroponic applications and can be mixed like Bio-Jolt and used as a mycorrhizal drench. If used as a drench, we suggest multiple applications shortly after planting to ensure the mycorrhizal spores reach the roots. Like Green 150, Hydro Green 110 contains the holistic matrix of bene�cial organisms that promote plant growth and health. We recommend 1tbsp per 32oz of water. As with Bio-Jolt, shake to suspend the product in water, instead of stirring.

Hydro Green 110 works with many hydroponic applications. Application rates will vary by technique. 1 tbsp per 32oz of liquid may be the baseline, but growers have gotten great plant response in deep root culture with stronger doses.

Use Myco-Edge Sustain after planting, and periodically through the lifespan of the plant. Sustain is a complex blend of beneficial microorganisms that stimulate growth and overall plant health. Mix 1 tbsp of Sustain to 32oz of water or nutrient / fertilizer mix. We suggest shaking (not stirring) to suspend Sustain in the liquid (a 32oz Jar with a lid works great). A cup of liquid, to a pint (16oz), per plant based on plant size should provide measured plant response. This should be repeated every 10-14 days.

Myco-Edge Soluble is a micronized Multi-Mycorrhizal powder. Soluble contains Endo, Ecto, and Ericoid mycorrhizae and can be mixed like Sustain and used as a mycorrhizal drench. If used as a drench, we suggest multiple applications shortly after planting to ensure the mycorrhizal spores reach the roots. Like our other inoculums, Soluble contains a holistic matrix of beneficial organisms that promote plant growth and health. We recommend 1tbsp per 32oz of water. As with Sustain, shake to suspend the product in water, instead of stirring. This product works great on established indoor and outdoor plants.

Balancing the pH in your hydroponics system is incredibly important to the health and vitality of your crop. If the pH is not in the correct range then essential nutrients and micro nutrients will not be available for uptake by your plant. This can lead to nutrient defi ciencies and eventually death. So why is pH Important? If the pH levels are outside of the optimum range then the plants will lose the ability to absorb some of the essential elements required for steady growth. The optimum pH levels of plants varies, with most preferring slightly acidic growing conditions – although most can survive in the range (5.0-7.5).

Above pH 6.5 many nutrients and micro nutrients precipitate out of solution and stick to the walls of the hydroponic reservoir.

In order for your plants to feed from the nutrients you are adding they need to be dissolved in solution. In the event of the nutrients precipitating out of solution your plants are unable to absorb them and suffer nutrient defi ciencies if not quickly corrected.

Using a pH up and down solution in small quantities allows for the control of the pH in your reservoir. Levels should always be checked after nutrient solutions have been added to the reservoir as they contribute to changes in the pH levels.

Adjusting the pH of your Hydroponic Solution

pH adjusters can be added manually, or automatically using a pH dosing pump. The automatic pH dosing pump allow for the continuous and automatic control of the pH level in your hydroponic solution. Once calibrated the pumps pH measuring probe is added to the solution and starts measuring the pH levels. The pH range is programmed into the pump and whenever the probe detects the solution being out of the range it will begin adding pH up or down to correct the levels and bring back into a safe operating zone.
