Party Dip Tips

Keep it simple - Pick up some ready-to-eat dips such as Wholly Guacamole and Spicy Wholly Salsa. Made with 100 percent natural ingredients, these dips bring great taste to the table - with no fuss from you.

Shake things up - Set out a wide variety of dippers. Have different types of chips like blue corn, sweet potato and salt and vinegar. Get flavored crackers, pita chips and a veggie tray, too.

Make it fancy - Dress things up a bit with cherry tomatoes stuffed with guacamole, or a warm and savory crab dip.

Party Pizzas Scratch delivery and frozen pizzas. Set up a pizza bar with heat-and- eat crusts in full and mini sizes that can be piled up with everyone’s toppings of choice. Then, pop them under the broiler or on the grill for a few minutes for quick, customized pizzas.

TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE COM M UTE

Put the cell phone dow n. Your car is not a mobile office. Cell phones are distracting. Designate your time in the car as “ quiet time.” If you must talk on the phone, get a headset -- as now required by many state law s -- so that both your hands remain on the steering w heel.

Ways to stretch your money further

Living on fixed income after retirement requires that many retirees make some financial concessions. Retirement income likely won’t equal the income professionals earned while they were still working, so men and women approaching retirement may want to begin prioritizing their purchases and choosing which luxuries they can and cannot live without going forward.

Managing on a fixed income may necessitate some changes, but a little frugality and financial wherewithal can ensure seniors need not compromise too much during their golden years.

· Change your dining habits. Many people enjoy meals out on the town after getting home from work and spending time with the family. Retirees have more flexible schedules,

and adjusting the time of day when they dine out can add up to considerable savings. Many brunch and lunch offerings are less expensive than dinner menus, and seniors can use this to their advantage. Meet up for lunch and spend less. If you prefer take-out, order from the lunch specials and then reheat your food at dinnertime.

· Ask about senior discounts. Various restaurants, stores and other retailers offer senior discounts. Inquire about discounts before making purchases and take advantage of any offers.

· Pool your resources. Bulk shopping clubs enable individuals to save money on the cost of many goods and services. However, for seniors living in two-person households, it may seem counterintuitive to purchase items in bulk. Split the cost of shopping club memberships with fellow retirees. This allows you to get discounted prices without having to store excessive amounts of food.

· Shop around. Instead of shopping only at stores you’re familiar with, go where the deals are. Many people are surprised to learn that drug stores often charge less than supermarkets for personal grooming products and household supplies. Shopping online also may yield some good deals. Before making any online purchases, familiarize yourself with shipping costs, which may negate the savings.

· Sign up for rewards programs. Rewards programs may lead to a few extra promotional emails throughout the week, but the savings reaped can be considerable and well worth the nuisance of seeing your spam folder fill up each day. Many savings clubs have replaced traditional coupons, saving seniors the effort required to scan circulars looking for deals.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable

tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say

the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion

in 2012.

W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just

some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each

year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash

and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

Stress and food

Everyone reaches for comfort foods and junk food when stressed out. You know you shouldn’t, but you probably feel you need something to help you during that intense period of time when stress is king.

When stressed, one should stay away from caffeine and sugar. It’s easy to grab an energy drink or a candy bar because they’re accessible and in every convenience and drug store in America.

Once the rush is gone from sugary, caffeine-packed foods, you’re facing a crash unless you continue to eat and drink to keep your body in the high. Continuing to eat and drink these products will compound the situation even more because you then become sleep-deprived, which raises the levels of anxiety and slows you down.

The best way to attack bad eating choices during a moment of stress is to maintain your body and mind at equilibrium. Before an important interview, presentation or exam, try eating whole foods and complete meals, and forget about the bag of cookies. While these satiate the appetite at the moment, it certainly won’t keep your blood-sugar levels stable, making it difficult to cope with your initial problem: high stress.

“Eat dark, leafy greens, high fiber foods and lean cuts of protein as a complete meal,” says nutritionist and public health expert, Nicole Dowsett. She recommends staying away from heavily seasoned foods and eating four to six small meals a day. “Take time to eat and avoid grabbing something on the go to just stuff your face.”

It takes 20 minutes for your stomach to communicate with your mind that you are full. Making time to eat is very important. If you can, share meals with friends or loved ones, Dowsett says. Sharing meals helps you to take your time and deters you from making bad choices, or even worse yet, hiding your unhealthy food choices - which can lead to an eating disorder.

“High stress mixed with bad food choices can cause and increase behavioral issues, sleep deprivation, problems focusing, over-thinking tasks without developing a clear focus, inability to prioritize, reduced cognitive skills, heightened sensitivity and heightened emotions,” Dowsett says.

By making informed, careful food choices during times of stress, you can help ensure what you eat doesn’t add extra calories, fat and poor nutrition to your worries.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

If Walking Hurts, Try Water Exercise DEAR DR. ROACH: I just wanted to touch base with you about my diabetes. While my weight has stayed stable around 320 pounds, my sugar numbers have been increasingly hard to keep in line. I’ve maxed out on the oral medications we use. My latest A1c was 6.6. The doctor says it should be under 6 and that our next step is insulin. He asked me to try to lose 50 pounds over the next six months in order to get my sugar back under control.

I agree and want it to happen. I’m counting calories and cutting out carbs, and have started walking in the morning. I know I can’t run, with no discs in my bottom three vertebrae. But even walking is hard. I walk until my leg goes numb, but I don’t think it will be enough, and I may not even be able to keep that up. Even walking easy makes my hip hurt and leg go numb after about 20 minutes. -- S.A.

ANSWER: I am surprised by your doctor’s advice, because it’s very clear now (from the ACCORD study) that an A1c (a measure of average sugar levels) of 7 percent has lower overall risks than an A1c of 6 percent for someone like you.

Exercise is always good, and my first thought is water. Getting in a pool will take pressure off your back, and you should be able to swim, walk in the water or do water-exercise classes to your heart’s content.

Readers: Start reaping the benefits of exercise the moment you begin. Even a brief daily walk or bike ride will make a difference. To learn more, order the booklet on Aerobics, Fitness and Abdominal Exercises by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a letter that seems to be saying that the Department of Health and Human Services is against breastfeeding. There also was something about hospitals and insurance companies, but I’m not sure what that was all about. Up until now, I just thought that breastfeeding was the best I could do for my baby. But if that’s true, then why would the DHHS or hospitals be against breastfeeding? -- S.G.

ANSWER: There is no doubt that breastfeeding is best for your baby. Breastfed babies have lower risk of becoming overweight and of many illnesses. The science is absolutely clear.

I read the letter I think you are referring to, and it seems to me that it is pointing out that some hospitals don’t do as good a job as they could in helping educate new mothers about why and how to breastfeed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, without hospital support, one in three mothers stops breastfeeding. Only about 5 percent of babies are born in U.S. hospitals that are designated “baby-friendly.” I support initiatives that help promote breastfeeding in hospitals, and hope the DHHS gives its support as well.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

A Cautionary Tale By Marianne Coons

Bullet was one of a litter of 10 blue Great Dane puppies born in Missouri in 2012. The breeder claimed that his lineage traced back to Germany. After undergoing sterilization, Bullet was shipped to his new owner in NY, who explains what happened next.

I nervously tracked Bullet’s flight from MO to NY. My husband Shane and our friend Tom Mocus arrived to find him in the corner of his crate scared and growling. When he came home we were overjoyed to see our new puppy but dismayed to find him completely upset. We understood. He had just flown 11 hours. That would make anyone crazy.

After one vet told us he wouldn’t be a good dog and that we should send him back, we took Bullet to Boomtowne in Farmington for puppy clicker training and socialization until he was 3 months old and too big to continue. Clicker training worked well with him, thank goodness. Our family gave him tons of love, time and understanding, and we made it through. He turned into the dog that he should’ve been from the beginning. He watched for the bus and became the kid’s alarm clocks. We went through our share of mishaps: couches eaten, loaves of bread gone, cereal boxes ripped apart, and anything left on the counter at risk of being eaten.

Then came the health issues: cartilage growing out of his eyes, wobbler’s disease and bloat/stomach problems. I am convinced that responsible breeders would have researched and done more to prevent these conditions. It is also my fault; I searched online. I purchased a dog that was a deal INCLUDING shipping and carrier for what should have been the price of the dog. IF a dog that is worth $1,500 is being shipped and includes a carrier and shipping, there is something wrong! I should have asked, “If his sire and dam from Germany were so valuable, why was the price so inexpensive?”

I am sharing our story to raise awareness; I do not want to sue anyone. I want others to think before they search online for a breeder, “What kind of dog is it, and what conditions are they really in?” Bullet’s mother at 6 years old was bred AGAIN after his litter, then the breeder “retired” and her website “disappeared”. I can only pray for his siblings; this is why I want his story out there–to honor my boy Bullet.

My Bullet was my best friend and I loved him with all of my heart. I’d never have exchanged him for $1 million dollars, but he really got a raw deal. It is with extreme sadness that I close by telling you of his passing on April 26, 2016 at The County Vet. I appreciate Dr. Dana Coover’s kindness and her wonderful staff.

Bullet is survived by his human family Shane, Marianne Cody, Andrew and Aaron and his beloved Mocus who gave him treats. He is also survived by Grandma and Grandpa Jeffery and Uncle George. He was a celebrity of sorts on Meadowbrook Lane in Farmbrook, and I want to thank his fans for saying hello every day. We know sometimes he barked at goofy times of the day, but he just liked to be heard. If you see a Great Dane in the future, I hope you smile at the sky and find the dog star Sirius (most visible in the winter) and think of Bullet. They are truly gentle giants.

Savvy home sellers can employ a few tricks to make their home an instant hit when buyers pull up to the curb.

Address issues with weeds:

A prevalent problem with weeds around the property is another situation that some buyers might feel is indicative of neglect. Weeds are a pretty simple problem to remedy, so buyers might be correct to assume weeds around the property are there because the homeowner was not concerned with maintenance. Lay mulch around flower beds and gardens to reduce weed growth, and pull any weeds from sidewalks and the driveway. Once weeds are pulled, spray areas that were infested with a weed-treatment product to ensure weeds don’t grow back.

“There is something permanent, and something extremely

profound in owning a home.”

– Kenny Guinn

Renting - “Often maligned as a product on which you ‘throw your money away,’ rentals have become a much more valued housing option,” said the Morgan Stanley authors.

Prepare your home to sell

• Do a deep cleaning. Whether a cleaning service is hired or the homeowner does it himself, tackling necessary cleaning projects could make the home shine. Now is the time to wash the windows, shampoo the carpets, regrout the bathrooms, and tackle all of those messes that could compromise a sale.

• Add a fresh coat of paint. If walls are bright colors or eclectic, it could pay to paint rooms in more neutral shades to appeal to the masses. Just be aware that some buyers are suspicious of paint, especially freshly painted ceilings. They may think a homeowner is trying to hide something, usually water stains.

• Keep the home updated. While one doesn’t have to follow every trend, ensuring the home is ageless can make for a better sell. So if the cabinets scream 1985 and the bathroom is circa 1967, it could be time to do some updating.

Unique Ways To Shop Locally

Forgo a traditional vacation. If you’re used to taking an annual trip to a Caribbean island or another faraw ay locale, forgo that trip this year and take a more local vacation instead. A local vacation can be similar to a staycation, w hen you simply stay home, but spend some nights out on the tow n in your local community. Go out to eat, take in a concert or theater performance at a nearby theater or take the kids out for miniature golf.

For those w ho feel the need to get aw ay from home, consider a local bed and breakfast or another relaxing locale that’s c lose to home. You w ill still get the feel of a traditional vacation, but you w on’t spend as much and you’ll be doing your part to help the local economy.

What has happened to

respect? We may not have it for ourselves but in the eyes of the Lord. To enter in his house in short shorts should be forbidden. If you can’t dress decent for an hour, do some soul- searching.

I live in a neighborhood

that has five private

schools within one block. Parents, do you know how fast the busses go? There are busses from every town within 40 miles, many medical transport vehicles. I cannot believe how fast they travel with the special needs children. I have gone to the schools and have called many companies but no one seems to care. If you have a special needs child I suggest you follow your child’s bus. Many of the busses only have one child

on the bus. Most drivers are paid salary, so the quicker they get the kids home, the sooner they are done, so I watch the drivers “fly” by my house every day. So parents of these special needs children really need to watch their kid’s bus driver and transport services. I am very concerned about the speed of these drivers. So to the schools and bus drivers, the neighborhood is watching – SLOW DOWN or we will call you in. FOLLOW THE SPEED LIMIT!

Giving us less product

per package? Yes, you are keeping the price the same. However, if a recipe calls for 16 oz. & I am only getting 12 - what am I supposed to do? One package is not enough to feed my family, 2 is too much. Plus the fact that it screws up the rest of the measurements in the recipe. STOP manufacturers. We are NOT stupid! Give us the full amount & raise prices if you have to. I am sick of making the same few things all the time because I can no longer use my favorite recipes.

accessible. I opened the door and asked one of the workers if I could order. They took my order and asked where I would be waiting. I said at the bench by the local grocer y store. They walked my order up to me. I want to thank you for having employees who go above and beyond of what is expected of them. Dinner was wonderful. I am a regular customer & will continue being one.

LeRoy Has Good Cops! The other day I filled up my gas tank at a local gas station and then discovered that my credit card was declined. To my surprise a nice police officer was inside buying himself a coffee. He bought my gas for me and did so with a smile on his face. This gesture taught me a valuable lesson that was worth more to me than that tank of gas. Thank You!

Do NOT leave elderly people, children or pets in cars in this weather. Temps in cars can rise to deadly figures very quickly!

I want to thank the Avon Lions Club for the Patriot Project, what a great idea! It is a pleasure to drive through the village and see all the flags flying. Let’s see more!!

Do yourself a favor and check out Stony Brook State Par k in beautiful Dansville! Went there with my family yesterday, and couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. I hadn’t been there in over 15 yrs.

To the owner of Ruck’s Pizzeria in Lima . I want to say you have exceptional employees who work in the pizza shop. I stopped on June 16, 2016 to order something to eat. I couldn’t go in because I had a person in a wheelchair and the pizzeria is not wheelchair

A recent joint study by the National Gardening Assoc iation, Residential Law n and Landscape Services and the Value of Landscaping found that homeow ners spend roughly $45 billion per year on professional law n and landscape services, as near ly 30 percent of all households across the United States use at least one type of law n or landscape service. The rising use of law n care services is indicative of homeow ners’ apprec iation of the convenience and craftsmanship professional services can provide. W hile the impact professional landscapers can have on a property’s aesthetic appeal is considerable, homeow ners also benefit from w orking w ith professional landscapers in various other w ays.

Green up Your Grilling (Family Features) Burgers are the most popular food for grilling for good reason - they are inexpensive to prepare and super versatile. Lean beef cooks nearly 30 percent faster than beef with a higher fat content. Searing the meat before grilling locks in moisture and flavor and makes a big difference in the final result.

Did you know ? Damage to a law n may be indicative of various problems. Everything from insects to rodents to the family pet may be responsible for causing burnt patches, holes and other eyesores. Getting to the bottom of the problem is the first step in remediation. Burning and discoloration of the law n is often a re sult of high concentrations of dog urine pooling in one area. Diluting the urine by hosing dow n areas of the law n can c lear up many problems. Birds, raccoons, skunks, moles, and other rodents may feed on grubs that reside ju st under the thatch of the law n, and animals may tear up law ns in search of this delicacy. Treating the grub problem usually alleviates damage caused by animals. M ole crickets are another common law n destroyer. These insects resemble crickets, but they burrow beneath the turf to feed on plant roots. The mole crickets can pu sh up channels of turf as they burrow, exposing roots to the elements and causing the grass to die. Gettin g rid of the insects canrevitalize the law n.

Recently, your Genesee Valley Penny Saver was honored with a “First Place” in General Excellence from the Association of Free Community Papers - our National Association. Our popular magazine has historically scored well in graphics competitions and this year was no different, but a fi rst place is their highest honor and we are deeply gratifi ed!

Overall design, ease of use, readability and print quality were the key categories we were judged on. And the fi nal judge’s comment: “We cannot think of anything that GVPS could do to improve their publication.” We’ll keep trying.

We’rejumpingfor joy!

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Pay In Advance

Not all restaurants will allow it, but when making the reservation ask if it’s possible the pay the bill prior to the dinner. Ideally, the bill should not come to the table. However, if the restaurant won’t allow the bill to be paid in advance, grab it once it ’s left on the table and then quickly look it over before paying. Never argue over the bill when hosting a client for dinner. If need be, save the receipt and call the restaurant the following day.
