The Defense Doesn’t Rest The Greyhound defense proved to be opportunistic in the season opener, with Darrelyn McCloud’s 33-yard interception return spark-ing the Greyhound rally from a 24-7 deficit. Christopher Barnard and Julian Yearwood each registered 11 tack-les, while the defense registered five quarterback hurries. Barnard posted the only sack of the game.

Teams that are Special Christopher Barnard paced the Hounds with a pair of special teams tackles against New Mexico High-lands, last week. Kevin Reaves averaged 11.3 yards on three punt returns. Lobo Notes The Lobos dropped a 51-6 deci-sion to Texas A&M-Commerce, to open the season. Sul Ross was led by a standout defensive per-formance from Earl Hines, with 13 tackles, which included 12 solo stops. Zach Roberson and Jural Hickman both came up with in-terceptions. Joey Dixon forced a fumble, which was recovered by Brandon Thornton.

FOUR NEW TEAMS ENTER THE AFCA DIVISION II COACHES’ POLL AFTER WEEK ONE

WACO, TEX.– After the first week of action, there was a big shakeup in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll as four ranked teams fell out of the poll, with two previous Top 10 teams falling more than 10 spots after upset losses. Valdosta State (Ga.) held onto the No. 1 spot with 29 first-place votes, followed by Minnesota State-Mankato at No. 2 with two first-place votes. Northwest Missouri State and West Texas A&M flip flop places, to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, while Colorado State-Pueblo jumped three spots to No. 5 this week. Losses by Shippensburg (Pa.), New Haven (Conn.), Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) and Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) caused all four of those teams to drop out of the poll, which made room for North Alabama at No. 22, North Carolina-Pembroke and West Chester (Pa.) tied at No. 23 and Delta State (Miss.) coming in at No. 25. There is only one Top 25 matchup this week as No. 4 West Texas A&M plays No. 18 Chadron State (Neb.) on Thursday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

In his first season as head coach, Josh Lynn made his return to the Greyhound sidelines a successful one. He guided Eastern to two wins in its first three games, including a hard-fought 34-24 win over now-NCAA Division I University of the Incarnate Word, as part of the Lone Star Conference Football Festival at Cowboys Stadium. The Hounds also won a 7-3 defensive struggle, in the home finale against Texas A&M-Commerce. In December, 2011, Eastern New Mexico University athletic director Jeff Geiser announced that Josh Lynn had been named as the 15th coach of the Greyhound football program. Lynn comes to Eastern after post-ing a 9-2 record at New Mexico Military Institute during the 2011 season. Although he is the new head coach, he isn’t new to the program or community, having played as an all-conference performer at ENMU, prior to serving on the coaching staff.

“I welcome the opportunity to come to Eastern New Mexico

University,” said Lynn. “My fam-ily and I look forward to work-ing with the Greyhound football

family in the future.”

“We are very pleased that Josh Lynn has accepted our invitation to be the new football coach at East-ern New Mexico University,” said Steven Gamble, ENMU president. “It is especially gratifying when an ENMU graduate wants to return to their alma mater. Coach Lynn has a tradition of success at every level he has been at—from being a player to assistant coach to head coach. He epitomizes the kind of person we want representing our university: a competitive coach who wants to win, but will not take academic shortcuts. His priorities are academics and character in recruiting players who can help the Greyhounds be com-petitive in the Lone Star Conference. Under his direction, we are looking forward to the future of Greyhound football.” Lynn wasted little time estab-lishing himself at nearby NMMI, coaching the secondary and special teams, when he arrived for the 2005 season, before becoming the defen-sive coordinator in 2006. After taking the reigns as head coach, he quickly turned around a program, which posted a 3-8 mark in 2010, by win-ning nine games. The team finished ranked sixth in the nation and made a trip to the CHAMPS Heart of Texas

Bowl. Lynn started his coaching ca-reer with the Greyhounds as a student assistant coach for wide receivers in 2000, before becoming a recruiting coordinator for the following two seasons.

“I am obviously excited,” said Geiser. “The news that Lynn has been named as our football coach will reverberate around the en-tire state and will excite in-state student athletes about our pro-

gram. This gives us instant cred-ibility. Josh is an Eastern guy, his

father is in a New Mexico Hall of Fame, and nobody is going to work harder to restore pride in

our program.” Prior to moving to NMMI, Lynn served as a safeties coach at Gulf South Conference powerhouse Delta State University during the 2003-04 seasons. He coached all-conference players at all three schools, includ-ing wide receivers Cale Sanders and Derek Hunter at ENMU. Gary Bell (Delta State) and Nick Jackson (NMMI) went on to become All-Americans under Lynn’s watch.

The winner of the Eastern New Mexico University-West Texas A&M University football game receives the traveling Wagon Wheel Trophy. The annual battle for the Wagon Wheel began in 1986, when the teams resumed play 41 years after the first game in 1945. Since 1986, ownership of the wheel has been contested every year except 1991, when West Texas A&M did not compete in football. The teams have not met since the 2009 season, when the Buffaloes claimed a 34-24

Few college football teams have a home field advantage like Eastern New Mexico. The Greyhounds play within visual distance of ENMU’s Blackwater Draw Museum and just a few miles from the Blackwater Draw archaeological site. The “Curse of Blackwater Draw” has been blamed by opponents for many home wins by the Hounds. Newspapers in New Mexico and Texas often list Blackwater Draw as the dateline for ENMU’s home games. Blackwater Draw is a significant site for the study of Clovis Culture, and is also a key site for Folsom Culture research. Both groups hunted game and gathered plants and roots. Humans arrived at the site at least 11,000 years ago. At one time there was a large pond near the Blackwater Draw site that was probably a major wa-tering hole for animals. Several mammoth skeletons have been found, along with those of Bison Antiquus.
