APRIL 4 2016

Dear Brothers.

A warm, sincere and fraternal welcome to all my fellow Catenian Brothers & their loved ones. Well done Brother George Kazs and he fellow committee members of the Committee in their efforts in putting together the material etc in explaining to our Province 21/Province 20/Victoria Area about the Restructure vote, as you will know, the result was a resounding YES. Congratulations to that Catenian stalwart Brother Brendan O’Connell on receiving the AOM, well done Brendan you certainly deserve it, also Brother Lawrence Atley of Peninsular Circle in Area Victoria who also received the AOM. Both Brothers are shining examples of what Catenians do to help other people. Well done Charlie Murton on winning the Little John Mug, your rendition of "It's the early bird that catches the flying pig" was truly amazing. Congratulations to Brother John Secker for winning the Golf Tournament organised by Malcolm Clow for Province. Also, today, (Sunday, 10th April) I was fortunate to attend the Rite of Ordination of Deaconate to Brother Mark Cavicchiolo of City of Cairns Circle. Bishop James welcomed Brother Mark and did a wonderful ceremony attended by many of his Catenian Brothers here in Cairns including President Brother Joe Vella. Please can all Circle secretaries send me items for inclusion in our next edition please. After being Editor of Eastern Link for the past eight years I have decided this will be my last year, also, as Province 21 Publicity Officer I will be standing down. I feel as though it is time for somebody with fresh idea’s to take over. I have built up some good relationships with Brothers I have never met, for example; what happened last year, I was sat in my local shopping centre having my morning ‘cuppa’ when I spotted Malcolm Clow walking through, I shouted his name, and he as so surprised that someone recognised him!!! Previous to that we had never met. Thank-you to all who send items for insertion in Eastern Link. Sincerely & Fraternally

PROVINCE 21 DIRECTOR

BROTHER GEORGE KAZS

THE CATENIAN ASSOCIATION

Chairman Australian Committee Restructure Impact Report 9 April 2016

RESTRUCTURE APPROVED Brothers, you should have received formal advice from the Grand Secretary as to the results of the vote on our proposed restructure. That advice noted that voting on the Restructure proposal and associated papers closed at midnight on 31st March and that votes cast as recorded via the web portal were as follows: Total votes cast: 6,259 ‘Yes’ votes in favour of the proposal: 4,850 = 77.5% of total votes cast ‘No’ votes against the proposal: 1,409 = 22.5% of total votes cast

This means the two thirds majority in favour required by our rules for the proposal to be accepted, was achieved. Consequently, the new Constitution, Rules and Regulations are now in force and Central Council came into being after the close of voting. To remind you, the members of the Central Council are:

Peter Woodford Central Council Chairman David Rowley Central Council Vice-Chairman, GB National Council President George Kazs Australian National Council President Gerry Barton Immediate Past Australian National Council President David Brinkley Director for Development Areas Development Area Representative Member in this post from 14 May 2016 Bernard Noakes Association Secretary Kevin Rafferty Association Treasurer

It’s been a long and at times stressful process for many members. But the result means we can now move forward with confidence. There is much we can do in Australia and I look forward to those challenges. Central Council met on 7th April to recognise that Grand Council will continue to administer the assets of the Association in the best interests of the Association, and as directed by Central Council, until the Grand Council meeting scheduled for 4/5th November 2016 while the transition arrangements to implement the new structure are completed. Members will be kept informed of progress during the transition period. For us, we can expect that, consistent with the transitional constitutional documents, our Australian National Council (ANC) will come into effect on 29 July 2016 when the Central Council provides it with its mandate. Members of the ANC, when mandated on 29 July 2016 are expected to be as follows:

George Kazs Australian National President; Director Province 21 Michael Howard Australian National Secretary Gerry Barton Immediate Past Australian National President; The member in this post after 14 May 2016 Director Province 20 Stephen Williamson Provincial President Province 20 Peter Tilbrook Provincial President Province 21 Greg Lynch President Victoria Area

Chairman Australian Committee Restructure Impact Report 9 April 2016

I will provide updates from time to time but you can rest assured that I and my colleagues on AusCom have been working hard to ensure that the transition to our ANC is managed smoothly. AusCom is currently considering the development of a strategic platform to guide its operations and its transition to the new ANC. Provincial and Area Councils have been consulted in this process. As AusCom transitions to the ANC, it is important that sound foundations be in place. An Australian strategic framework is desirable to inspire the membership and its various leadership Councils to grow and develop the Association in Australia. The features of such a strategic framework include such concepts as Vision, Mission, and Operating Principles. The platform will guide the ANC in its deliberations, priorities and actions. It is intended that members of ANC will draw on its constituent elements in their dealings with Provinces, Circles and administrative bodies so that the leadership of the Association in Australia presents clear, concise and consistent messages to Australian Catenians. There are a range of operational requirements, policies and procedures which have been identified and which will be progressed to ensure the Association’s good governance in Australia. In the short term, AusCom (and subsequently the ANC) are considering such matters as the following to facilitate the transition (not in any order):

Develop a national membership reporting protocol to allow the ANC to add value to and assist provinces and areas grow and develop the Association in Australia;

Establish an Association not for profit company limited by guarantee in Australia to provide any necessary corporate / legal / financial protections;

Develop and publish appropriate communications news features marking the creation of the new arrangements in all relevant Catholic media; including commissioning of the ANC members by a member of the ACBC at the Perth National Conference in October 2016;

Finalise any financial arrangements to facilitate the establishment of the ANC including consideration of national banking arrangements and determination of post 2016-17 capitation fees;

Negotiation of a service level agreement with the CC covering the use and payment for IT, database services and other required services as well as the establishment of relevant protocols in Australia covering the use of those services;

Development of a national web site with links to all Provinces, Areas and Circles, a secure common communications platform, and dedicated media liaison (including social media);

Development of systems and toolboxes to facilitate the sharing of information and resources among the three jurisdictions;

Establishment of a communications protocol for the ANC in its relationship with Councils, Circles and members;

Clarification of bursary and benevolence policies as they will be applied in Australia;

Development of proposals for the use of regalia by the ANC. The ANC will need to formalise its position on these and related matters when it is established. But I hope all members are assured that these governance matters are being managed expeditiously and for the good of the Association. Of course, if you have any questions or comments please let me know – [email protected]

APRIL Page 7 2016

Dear Brother,

We are now entering the end of the beginning of national restructuring, as well as approaching the beginning of a new phase as Australian Catenians within the overarching structure of an International Association of friends founded on faith, friendship and fun! I hope that by now, you would have prayed about your vote on the restructure, and that the final vote would be a resounding “YES” to the proposal which is now before you. I would remind all circles that the vote has to be in by the end of March, 2016.

Since the last issue of Eastern Link, Provincial Council has met. Among matters discussed was the issue of assisting brothers with their roles in their circles, especially for those brothers who are new to those roles. A Provincial workshop will be held on 2 April for these brothers. Another issue is that of developing a Provincial Strategic Marketing Plan – this cannot be done in isolation, but requires collaboration and consultation between Circles and Provincial Council in order for the Plan to be both relevant and workable. Another Provincial Workshop will focus on these strategic and marketing issues – this workshop will be held on 4 June 2016. Brothers who are in any leadership role, or who are decision-makers for their circle are invited to attend this second workshop. The Little John Mug was also concluded at Manly Circle recently. There were seven contestants, including contestants from both Gold Coast Tweed and Canberra Circles. Congratulations to Charlie Murton from Ku-Ring-Gai Circle for winning the Little John Mug for 2016. We now look forward to visiting Ku-Ring-Gai Circle at their new venue in February 2017 for the next Little John Mug contest.

The calendar for Provincial competitions for 2016-2017 are now complete. The O’Connell Cup is at Parramatta on August 25th. We then move to Canberra for the Truthful Jones contest on Saturday September 24th, followed by the Provincial Mass on Sunday September 25th. I commend these Provincial events to all brothers, as the events celebrate our friendships and allows us to demonstrate the fraternal love that comes through shared table hospitality.

I was also saddened by the recent death of Br. Jack Barrett, a foundation member of the City of Parramatta Circle. Jack was a much-esteemed brother of the Circle, who with his wife June, were longstanding parishioners of St. Patrick’s Cathedral Parish. Jack was instrumental in the organising and running of the Chocolate Wheel at the annual St. Patrick’s Spring Fair, assisted by many members of the City of Parramatta Circle. Please pray for the soul of Jack, and for June and the rest of his family.

I am now coming to the end of my second term as Provincial President. For me, it has been a great time of meeting new brothers, especially in Canberra, Gold Coast Tweed and Cairns. Province 21 covers two states and a territory – so the challenge is to ensure that outlying Circles do not become isolated from the Sydney-based Circles. Another ongoing challenge is that of our declining membership, which is gradually becoming older. We need new strategies and avenues of growth if we are not to become a museum exhibit in the years ahead. The Provincial workshop on 4 June will be an important workshop in this respect. I would ask every brother to pray for the Lord to bless this workshop with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, so that new growth may spring forth from the strategies that we develop from the Workshop.

Fraternally,

Brother Michael Tan, President, Province 21

4. Business Arising from Minutes of Meeting No 116 Council noted the paper as circulated as matters arising from the minutes and headed Filling Vacant Positions and noted that the following nominations for the various Council positions for 2016-17 had been received by the Provincial Secretary in accordance with his earlier advice: President Peter Tilbrook nominated by John Tweedie

Vice President Graham Short nominated by Michael Tan Secretary John Tweedie nominated by Michael Tan Treasurer Paul Day nominated by John Tweedie Membership Officer Kevin Doherty nominated by Peter Tilbrook Supply Officer Paul Day nominated by John Tweedie

As there was only a single nomination for these various Council positions, Council declared these brothers elected un-opposed to the nominated positions. Whilst there was no formal nomination for the role of Publicity Officer, Bro Peter Cash indicated to the President that he was willing to continue in the role for one more year. The Council resolved to appoint him to that role for the 2016/2017 year. It was noted that Bro George Kazs and Bro Pat Moran had both spoken to Bro Tibor Puhl from Area Victoria about taking on the role as Provincial Records Officer for Province 21. They indicated that Bro Tibor was willing to take on the role. The meeting resolved to request Bro Secretary to formally write to Bro Tibor and advise him that Province 21 Council would be very happy if he took on the role as PRO for the Province, and seek confirmation that he was willing to accept this nomination. Action Secretary to write to Bro Tibor Puhl and ask him to confirm he will accept nomination No nominations have been received for the roles of Chamberlain and Media Liaison Officer. 5. Reports: Membership Officer and PRO Membership Report Bro Kevin Doherty spoke to his Provincial Membership Report as circulated. He indicated that the focus was on:

Supporting the Brisbane Group

Expansion in Sydney south of the harbour.

Perhaps supporting Canberra Circle to get a Circle up and running in Queanbeyan.

Bro Kevin referred in this regard to the fact that Province had decided at meeting 115 to allocate $1000 per annum for three years towards this expansion. Bro Michael suggested that other brothers in Province who travel to Brisbane may be able to assist in the development of the Brisbane group and suggested that Bro Dean Morzone from Cairns Circle might be approached in that regard. Action Bro Peter Cash to approach Bro Dean and ascertain whether he can assist the Brisbane Group With respect to moves south of the Harbour, Bro Peter Tilbrook offered to have City of Sydney Circle facilitate a meeting between Mons Brian Rayner (PP Gymea Parish) and Kevin Doherty. Action Bro Peter to seek to facilitate meeting between Bro Kevin and Mons Rayner . Provincial Records Officer Report

Bro Pat spoke to his report circulated to Councillors. He advised that he was waiting for data for two Circles for January but confirmed that the figures currently show year to date, 18 enrolments, 3 deaths, 29 resignations and 2 forfeitures. Manly Circle has cleaned up its membership records and this resulted in 2 resignations and a forfeiture. There are now 413 in the Province. We have dropped 10% in the past 8 years Cairns is ahead on the Friar Tuck Trophy score with 4 enrolments so far this year. Bro Pat reported on his discussions with Bro Tibor Puhl in connection with him taking on the P21 PRO role. 5.3 Membership trial proposal by Bro Peter McDonald

Bro Peter spoke to the proposal he had previously put forward to Provincial Secretary and which had been circulated to Councillors. This had been the subject of discussion at a meeting he attended with Bro Michael Tan, Peter Tilbrook and Kevin Doherty. The proposal is to “look at things in a new way”. Specifically, that Pittwater Circle should carry out a trial whereby they would invite:

Lapsed Catholic men;

Divorced Catholic men; and

Non Catholic men who attend Mass with their wives,

to attend meetings and dinners in the Circle. It would be made clear that we were not able to offer full membership to these groups under the rules as they currently stand. But the aim of the trial would be to gauge whether these groups might be interested in having a greater involvement in our Association, with a form of associate type membership. Bro Peter suggested this may be a way of bringing some men back into the faith. There was discussion about the possibility of associate membership being introduced into Australia by by-laws, assuming the Restructure vote is successful. Bro George made the point that we would not want to mislead these men into thinking that we could offer them full membership. Resolved that Pittwater Circle proceed to undertake a trial of inviting lapsed and divorced Catholic men, and non Catholics who attend Mass with their wives, to attend Pittwater Circle meetings and dinners on the basis that they be asked to pay full dinner fees after the initial meeting/dinner, however it is to be made clear that full membership is not open to them at this point in time. Action Bro Peter McDonald to take this matter back to Pittwater Circle for implementation of the trial. At this point Bro George referred to a You Tube video from the USA dealing with male spirituality. Focus is Catholic men. It deals with pressures on Catholic men in this modern day and age and indicates the importance of fellowship. Bro George will send the link. Action Bro George Kazs to send You Tube video link to Secretary for circulation.. 6. Reports: Director The report by Bro George circulated to Councillors was noted . Bro Chris Pitts indicated that he had been part of the liaison referred to on IT and Communications. He had raised some serious contractual issues that had not been considered before. It was noted that the latest cost estimate is worth $60000. Bro Secretary raised the issue of the implications of the incorrect inputting of votes through the portal., to the restructure vote. He advised the Council that he had offered assistance to any secretary having difficulty in inputting data through the portal. Bro Secretary indicated that he did not feel comfortable in making formal approaches to Circles to find out the way they voted on the restructure, as this was a matter for the Circles and their members. Bro Secretary drew attention to a favourable email from Bro Phil Harris concerning Bro George’s paper on the AusCom vision.

7. Reports: President Brother President Michael Tan spoke to his report circulated to Councillors. He suggested that there be a formal recognition of Bro Brendan O’Connell’s OAM from Council. The Council agreed. Action Bro Secretary to draft a letter of congratulations to Bro Brendan O’Connell from Provincial Council. Bro Michael also discussed the proposal for two workshops this year, one for Circle officers and then another focussing on Circle leaders and decision makers and dealing with broader strategic and marketing issues. 8. Reports: Vice President Bro Peter Tilbrook spoke to the Church Liaison Report. With respect to the publication the Swag, it was noted that the hard copy costs $33 pa and the soft copy $25 pa. Bro Peter advised brothers that it is not possible to lend around the soft copy. Council resolved to approve purchase of both copies. Action: Bro Secretary to arrange for the purchase of both the hard copy and soft copies of the Swag. Bro Secretary advised the meeting that he had made enquiries at St Mary’s Cathedral, about its availability for the Provincial Mass on 3 July. He advised that it was not available on that day as this was the day of the special Mass for renewing matrimonial vows. A recommendation that the Provincial Mass be held in Canberra on 25 September, being the same weekend as the Truthful Jones competition, was discussed. Resolved to accept the recommendation that the Provincial Mass be held in Canberra on 25 September (being the day after the Truthful Jones competition). Bro Peter Tilbrook indicated that if any Catenians would like to participate in a Mass at the time of the Feast of St Peter and St Paul, he would be happy to arrange for this at St Patricks Church Hill. Bro Peter mentioned the need to ensure numbers for the Golf Day on 11 March. The Parramatta Diocese Gala fundraising dinner for World Youth Day was discussed. Resolved to accept the recommendation that Council pay for tickets for Bro Michael Tan and Annette to attend the dinner. 9. Reports: Secretary Bro Secretary drew attention to the correspondence report.

Bro Secretary spoke to his paper dealing with the various communications opposing the Restructure and the response by the Grand Secretary elect. Resolved that Bro Secretary be instructed to write to all Circle Secretaries, forwarding a copy of the various communications, and advise that, while voting on the restructure remains the prerogative of individual members voting through their Circles, Provincial Council has reviewed these communications and remains of the firm view that the restructure will be in the interests of the Association as a whole and of the Association in Australia Action Bro Secretary write to all Circle Secretaries in terms of the resolution Bro Secretary spoke to the paper dealing with the two workshops proposed by Bro Michael Tan, namely:

a half day Circle officers training workshop proposed for 2 April; and

a full day Circle leader and decision makers workshop proposed for 4 June. Council resolved to hold both workshops as proposed, that Circles be asked to pay for both workshops as in past years and that Exco should coordinate the workshops.. Action 1 Bro Secretary to

book the St Joseph’s Centre for both 2 April and 4 June

send notice to all Circle secretaries advising of the workshops 2 Exco to prepare programme for both workshops

The draft Provincial Calendar was noted. Council requested it be updated to take account of matters discussed at the meeting. The recommendation that we accept the request for Catenian support at the Procession of the Blessed Sacrament was discussed. Resolved to accept the request on the basis that it is for the same type of support and on the same terms as in previous years, including protection of the Archdiocese insurance coverage and publicity.

Action Bro Secretary to write to Circle secretaries advising that we propose to participate and calling for volunteers. Bro Secretary then to contact the organisers confirming our participation on the same terms as before, in connection with insurance and publicity. 10. Reports: Treasurer The financial report for the quarter ended 31 December 2015, was circulated and its terms were noted. Bro Secretary raised the need for Director, MO and Bro Peter Tilbrook to advise Bro Paul of items of expenditure for the draft budget, as indicated in his notes to the financial statements.

Action Brothers to consider items for inclusion in the budget as notified by Bro Paul Day.

11. Reports: Publicity Officer/Website Councillor’s noted Brother Peter Cash’s report. There was discussion about the need to locate a replacement for Bro Peter for next year. Bro Peter referred to the issue about Cradio raised in his Circle report. He was advised that we had previously decided not to pursue a relationship with Cradio on the basis of differences in focus eg it aimed at a much younger demographic than ours . Bro Chris Pitts spoke to his report. He indicated a need for the website to be updated. Members discussed the importance of the website for marketing the Association. Bro Chris referred to a proposed improvement in the calendar function. Circle secretaries would however need to access it and keep it up to date. Bro Chris advised that we will shortly need to pay for renewal of our domain name and the cost of hosting of our email system and website (total $255 – this lasts for two years). In addition, the technical support cost of $330pa will also fall due on 1 April . Resolved to approve payment of these costs. Bro Robin Wells raised the idea of having someone in-house do the website maintenance. He advised that Canberra Circle set up its own website and maintains it itself. Bro Michael Tan suggests we might discuss this at the second workshop on 4 June. Bro Kevin suggested that there be consideration of a national website by AusCom. Bro Chris pointed out that because we are now sending the Mailchimp newsletter direct to brother’s email addresses, this has flushed out that quite a number of email addresses (about 55) held by HO are wrong. He has asked Circle Secretaries to give corrected addresses. 12. Other Business

Council noted the Provincial Councillor reports as circulated. Bro Robin reminded Councillors that Canberra Circles 200th meeting and dinner was on 26 February. He also advised that the roles and responsibilities of officers could be found on the Canberra website.

Br Graham Short advised that Gold Coast Tweed circle had appointed a local priest as their spiritual adviser.

PROVINCE 21 WORKSHOP 2016 Held at the St Joseph’s Centre, Balkan Hills

Provincial Workshops in 2016 This year Provincial Council has organised to hold two workshops for Brothers within the Province. Both are being held at the St Joseph's Centre at Baulkham Hills. The first workshop was held on the afternoon of Saturday 2 April and focussed on Officer's Roles and Responsibilities. It was attended by 27 brothers representing almost all the Circles in Province 21. There was discussion of the role of Circle Councils and Benevolent Boards, followed breakout groups for Provincial Councillors, Circle Presidents and Vice-Presidents, Circle Secretaries, Circle Membership Officers and Circle Treasurers. These involved an examination of key issues for those in the various roles, facilitated by members of Exco. This was followed by reporting back and summation of key issues and summary points for each role. Bro George Kazs (Provincial Director) also gave an outline of the likely process of transition to an Australian National Council. At that stage the outcome of the restructure vote was not known. But the information has proven very relevant in view of the announcement on 8 April of the positive vote. Br. Tibor Puhl, who has agreed to take on the Provincial Records Officer role for Province 21, came up from Melbourne for the workshop. It was an excellent opportunity for brothers in Province 21 to meet him. The second workshop will be held on 4 June and will focus on more strategic issues for the Association in Province 21. The program will issue in the near future. John Tweedie Provincial Secretary

Grand Secretary’s Newsletter 60 – Members Extract

Dear Brother, This letter includes several items for your attention along with a number of attachments which I hope will help to keep you informed about the Association. 1) Increase in price of Catena

The last increase in the price of Catena was from £1.25 to £1.50 per issue in April 2009 when the magazine contained 44 pages. Since that time, the magazine has grown in quality and in size by 36% to 60 pages. As we know, there have been significant increases in the cost of postage in 7 years. A 2nd class stamp in the UK has doubled from 27p to 54p! In addition, Catena is now also offering an on-line version at no additional cost to the membership. In these circumstances, Grand Council has approved a recommendation from the Directors of Catena to increase the price from £1.50 to £1.85 from the April 2016 issue, an increase of £4.20 for a whole year. This price will be the same for all copies around the world. The reason for holding the same price for 7 years and a 23% increase now, is that careful management of costs during the early part of the period led to surpluses, which resulted in a level of reserves in the accounts in excess of operating requirements. It was decided that these reserves needed to be reduced to more prudent levels. Therefore, in the last two years, Catena has been operating at a deliberately budgeted loss, in order to reduce these surpluses. These surpluses have now been eliminated so Catena can no longer budget to incur losses. The price increase of 35p per copy should be sufficient to ensure that Catena will trade on a sound financial basis for some years. 2) Restructure

A reminder that the Restructure proposal needs to be voted on by all Circle members in time for results to be recorded on the Portal by 31st March 2016. 3) NEW – Membership mini-leaflets

A new pocket sized mini-membership leaflet entitled “Who are the Catenians” has been designed and produced. It is the same convenient ‘wallet’ size as the blue FAQs leaflet, which it replaces, and is based on the A4 red membership leaflet. Copies are free of charge and can be ordered by contacting Head Office on 024 7622 4533.

Grand Secretary’s Newsletter 61

Dear Brother, Restructure Vote result Voting on the Restructure proposal closed at midnight on 31st March 2016. The votes cast as recorded via the web portal were as follows: Total votes cast: 6,259 ‘Yes’ votes in favour of the proposal: 4,850 = 77.5% of total votes cast ‘No’ votes against the proposal: 1,409 = 22.5% of total votes cast This means that the two thirds majority in favour, required by our rules for the proposal to be accepted, was achieved. Consequently the new Constitution, Rules and Regulations are now in force and Central Council came into being after the close of voting. Secretary; Brother John Tweedie

Dear Brothers Secretary,

We have again received a request for volunteers from the organisers of the Procession of the Blessed Sacrament (Corpus Christi Procession) to be held in Sydney on Sunday 29 May. We are asked to help outside St Mary’s Cathedral as in past years (ie assistance with crowd management through maintaining the barriers and not permitting access to the Cathedral – weather permitting and assuming the event is staged outside). Further details: · Date: Sunday 29 May

· Arrival time: 2:00pm

· End time: approx 5:00pm (at the conclusion of the event) · Place: St Marys Cathedral · Role: assistance with crowd management through maintaining the barriers and not

permitting access to the Cathedral. Please publicise this request in your Circles and contact Bro John Tweedie on 0407 288 957 or by email at [email protected] if Circle members are able to assist in this very worthwhile event.

Our activities in this regard are consistent with our desire to strengthen our relationships with the clergy and parish communities. So a good positive response would be most welcome.

Responses by 9 April would be appreciated, so that we can advise the organisers.

I am copying to Provincial Councillors and to brothers who have assisted in the past. Yours fraternally,

Yours fraternally, John Tweedie Secretary Province 21

Joint Meeting 19th January 2016

As has become custom now for the past decade Carlingford & Castle Hill Circles meet at the St Joseph’s Centre for their annual January joint meeting/dinner. Departing from the norm, a guest speaker was invited, being Fr John Killiher MSC, secretary to the Provencal of the Australian Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, who spoke of his and the MSC’s mission work, in Papua New Guinea, Northern Territory and his own work whilst Administrator of Darwin Cathedral. In particular, he spoke in detail of the MSC’s “Clean Water “programme. With this programme in mind he thanked the Circles of Carlingford, Castle Hill, Hornsby and Parramatta for their very generous donation of $2000. As explained to Fr John it was raised during Past G.P., Bob Butler’s tour of Eastern Australia, instead of presenting Bob & Kathy with a gift from the aforementioned Circles at the dinner held in their honour, Kathy requested any funds be donated to a charity of the Circles

choice. /Brother Paul Despoges

DECEMBER MEETING…

We had 37 souls at our Christmas night in December. We were honoured to have three wives of our deceased brothers attend, Pat Sidgreaves, Pat Bradbury and Pat Masson. Thanks to the brothers who organised transport to the Occidental for the three Pats.

There was no official speaker for the night and the conversation flowed freely and people circulated around the tables. Bro. Pres. had organised a small gift for each of the ladies who were in attendance.

You can see from the photos that everyone was enjoying the festive season.

Snippets we’ve heard: Brother Guy and Cecile Cassar had the great pleasure of having son Simon, wife Lizzie and six month son Joshua back in Australia from the UK. They had the christening of Joshua at their Mosman Church and all the relatives to a luncheon in the community hall within the complex. Guy said that he and Cecile were completely enraptured by Joshua and were most sad when they left for London on the 19th November.

JANUARY JOINT MEETING WITH; CITY OF PARRAMATTA CIRCLE…

On a wet Thursday night with lightning and thunder nine Brothers from the City of Sydney Circle made our way to Lachlan’s Restaurant in Old Government House at Parramatta for our combined meeting. Due to the change in the night we did not have the meeting and dinner in the marquee at the rear of the wonderful old building but in the servant’s quarters. It was a little cramped but great to be in such an historical setting.

The meeting was conducted efficiently by Parramatta President Chris Worthington and our own President John Crawford.

We had a splendid dinner and Catenian wines with much laughter and conviviality.

The guest for the night was Oscar Costello who has just completed his HSC at St Aloysius College and is the recipient of a Catenian bursary to help him do 12 months on the Thailand Myanmar border. He spoke with confidence about his commitment to the job ahead and was extremely thankful for the financial help given to him by the Association. /Brother Peter O’Reilly

REST IN PEACE MICHAEL…

SNIPPETS FROM OUR CIRCLE…

CAN YOU HELP…

We are in need of a Brother to take on the role of Provincial Councillor due to Brother Peter Tilbrook having completed his term and taking on the duty of Provincial President. The Council meets four times a year and usually at Parramatta. The brother then reports back to the Circle on decisions made and events organised.

We have lost one of our past Brothers and an inaugural member of our Circle. Michael Tynan passed to eternal life on the 1st February 2016 after a long battle with cancer. Michael joined the Catenians with his two Brothers John and Tony in 1971 but pressure of the motor business and council affairs took him away from our Association. Tony, a past president of the Circle, is living in Gloucester and is not enjoying good health. Michael started a jewellery business in Kogarah in the 1960’s and then commenced a Mazda agency in the Sutherland Shire. This has grown into a huge distributorship of Honda, Mercedes, Jeep, Suzuki, Fiat and Saab. In fact the expression “Tynan Territory” now refers to the Sutherland Shire. Michael was on the board of Calvary Hospital, Mayor of the Sutherland Shire and with his wife Annette bred prized cattle in Wagga Wagga. Michael was 80 years of age. R.I.P.

Brother Mike Tighe has applied for transfer back to his original

Circle Ku-ring-gai since he and wife Dot sold at Edgecliff and

moved northwards to Pymble. Bro. Mike has been a great member

of our Circle for many years, a regular attender and always with

ideas about membership, social events and visiting overseas

Circles. His brother is a Catenian in England and Mike has visited

his Circle whenever he was in the UK. Mike was a devotee of

“Spirituality in The Pub” and attended their talks which

unfortunately were held on the first Wednesday on the month and

clashed with our Circle meetings.

He has not been so well in the past few years but still came into the

Occidental regularly.

The Circle wishes Bro. Mike and Dot every blessing and happiness

in the future and hope that he can come and “visit” City of Sydney

whenever possible. Mike always finished his emails with “Pax”

Mike.

Canberra Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, Christopher Prowse, Provincial President, Michael Tan, Provincial Vice-President, Peter Tilbrook and Provincial Director and Canberra Circle member, George Kazs, were present to help celebrate the occasion. Chris Pitts from Ku-Ring-Gai Circle was another visitor. Archbishop Prowse said that the Circle provided valuable social and spiritual support to members. He spoke about a typical day in the life of an archbishop. Drawing on people he had met that day, he encouraged the Circle to find ways of helping indigenous people, who are the most disadvantaged group in the Australian community, and young people. /Brother John McWilliam

Gold Coast Tweed Circle

Vocations Mass…

THE CATENIAN ASSOCIATION Gold Coast Tweed Circle 357

Meetings: 6.00 pm 2nd Thursday of month (EST)

Gold Coast Tweed Circle held its Vocations Mass on Sunday, 17th January at Sacred Heart Parish in Clear Island Waters. Each year we have it at a different church in our area, and if possible, combine it with a membership drive. Father Tim Harris, Parish Priest and Dean of South Coast Deanery, was most welcoming and helpful in allowing Brother Jay Nevin to address the congregation. (We have discovered a new spruiker). The celebrant, Father Okafor, from Nigeria, baptised a young relative during mass. Some cultural practices from Nigeria were incorporated – by baskets of fruit, bottles of water – but he drew the line at bringing in goats and cows and such as presents. The presentation of the infant in outstretched hands high over the altar was interesting also.

Our visit was well received. (We hope to see some interested men come along in the future to our venue at South Tweed Heads Sports Club). Afterwards, we adjourned to Surfers Paradise Golf Club for more coffee and cakes and some stayed for a late lunch. A most enjoyable time.

CITY OF MELBOURNE CIRCLE…

It is a source of great pride to Brothers of the City of Melbourne circle 292 in Australia, that a circle is about to be inaugurated in the holy land in Nazareth. It was a visit by a parish community leader from Nazareth to our circle two years ago that first began the discussion that has led to the first circle in the Holy Land.

We recently enjoyed two magical events in support of the Terra Santa Christian School located in Nazareth in the Holy Land. A wine and gourmet food evening posed as an entrée for a second evening of wonderful world music supplied by a group of visiting Zimbabwe College students. Much fun and fraternity was enjoyed by all.

In an ironic twist, the musical troupe was organized by the son of a Catenian from Zimbabwe who was assisted with employment when he was living in Melbourne by Brothers from our circle some years ago.

$5,000 was raised for the Terra Santa school which will provide important funding for capital projects. As a Christian school, they receive very limited funding from the Israeli Government.

We look forward to a continuing close association between our circle and the new circle in Nazareth. This is a

great demonstration of Catenian spirit across geographic and cultural borders.

Mary’s Rosary Chain is a Rosary Devotion to Our Blessed Mother, where people are invited and encouraged to pray one decade of (10 Hail Mary’s) each day in communion with other participants in this great powerful chain of prayer. The great benefit of praying (one decade) of the Rosary each day in union with tens of thousands of other participants around the world is the abundant fold Grace of Combined Prayers together with the Daily Prayers of the Pauline Order for the needs and intentions of the participants.

All participants are invited to enrol their Names on a list and have their Names permanently placed under the Blessed Sacrament in a Monastery of St Paul the First Hermit, “Shrine of Our Lady of Mercy”, Penrose Park, NSW or “Our Lady Help of Christians”, Marian Valley, Canungra, QLD, where the Order will pray daily for their intentions, also, Holy Mass is celebrated for all the participants every Saturday.

The Order of St Paul the First Hermit have warmly welcomed this Devotion and have given their full support and blessing for the inspiring Rosary Cards to be distributed and promoted wherever possible to encourage the people of God and especially children and youth to pray through the intercession of the Mother of God for the many urgent needs of the Holy Church and the world in general.

WHAT IS A CATENIAN...

The Catenian Association is an international body of proudly Catholic laymen who meet at least once a month in local units called Circles, to enjoy each other's company and thereby strengthen their family life and faith through friendship. It is open to laymen (men baptised or received into the Roman Catholic Church) from the age of 21 years. The Association has a number of objectives:

To foster deep and long lasting friendships among members and their families;

To provide benevolence of a spiritual, moral and financial nature to members and their families who find themselves in difficulty or need

To provide support to the Clergy

To advance the interests of young Catholics and assist them in the choice or pursuit of a career.

The Catenian Association is non political and is not a Catholic Action organisation, but it is an organisation for active Catholics. Many members of the Association are involved with the Church, particularly as Readers and Eucharistic Ministers. Some are governors of Catholic schools, or involved with Diocesan education committees, and others undertake roles in Parish and Diocesan finance committees or other activity. Many Catenians are involved with Catholic charities, and other similar local, national and international charities. Members are drawn from a wide range of experience. Many have a business or professional background, some are self employed, while others have a teaching, health service or other public service background. Some have no formal qualifications. The Catenians raise funds to support a wide span of charities and interests, at a local, national or International level. The Association has two charities: “The Benevolent and Children’s Fund” for its own members and their dependents, and the “Bursary Fund” which helps young Catholics aged 16 to 24 who are to take part in community-based projects at home and abroad, which have a clear benefit for others as well as for the participant. Applicants for grants from the Bursary Fund do not need to have any connection to a member of the Catenian Association. In addition, Presidents of Circles and Provinces usually raise funds for a nominated charity during their term of office. Occasionally there is an additional charity nominated by the Association. In its Centenary year in 2008, the Association raised over £250,000 for “Water for Life.”

BROTHER THOMAS WILLIAM PECK RIP

Late of Peninsula and Waverley Circle’s

Peacefully passed to eternal life on 6th February 2016

Please remember Yvonne and Family in your prayers

May He rest in Peace. Amen.

In memory of Thomas William Peck Son, Father, Grandfather, Husband, Friend and true Catenian

Born 28/10/31 Died 6/2/16. Tom was the second son of Tom and Frances Peck. He was born during the depression at Inglewood in country Victoria. Tom began his schooling at a one teacher rural school, a 4-mile bike ride away, before attending St Mary’s school in Cohuna 10 miles away. He finished his schooling, as a boarder, at Assumption College Kilmore before moving to Melbourne to commence his business career. He spent 28 years with PMG/Telecom and a further 14 years with the Navy, Civil Aviation and Commonwealth Tender Board the major portion of those years in purchasing – everything from provisions for Antarctic Expeditions to printing paper for the note printing office. As one of his daughters commented – “for someone who grew up using food ration coupons, dad must have been in spending heaven spending somebody else’s money.” Tom loved sport of all types but preferred participation rather than being a spectator although he enjoyed nothing better than going to the MCC with his sons for the annual Boxing Day Cricket Test. He was a successful footballer for a long time and was a very patient and gifted coach of men in football and of tennis juniors.

He married the love of his life Yvonne in 1958 and moved to Glen Waverley in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs where they remained for forty years raising 5 wonderful children and being totally involved in the community and especially St Leonards Church and their children’s schools. Tom was a special man – independent, self-assured, committed, a true and loyal friend and a committed Catholic. When the Catenian Association decided to form a second circle in Melbourne, Tom was an obvious choice to be invited to join as an inaugural member of Waverley. The Circle was inaugurated on 26/2/1988 by Grand President Pat Coker.

Tom was a fast learner and by May 1989 was Circle secretary, a position he held for 3 years before taking on the role of Registrar for 2 years. Both of these positions where good training for Tom’s next big step in the Catenian family – the formation of a new Circle on the Mornington Peninsula. Tom and Yvonne moved to Sorrento in the late 90’s and soon involved themselves in the life of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Sorrento. The Parish priest used to say that whenever the Melbourne Archbishop was attending mass, he would always ask Tom to serve on the altar. Tom was the key player in rounding up the necessary minimum number of starters to complete a Circle. This was not easy as the nearest established Circle was 90 Kilometres away and the Association was not known on the Peninsula. Similarly, there was little close support from experienced Catenians. However, Tom did have the support of the Parish Priest, who agreed wholeheartedly with the ideals of the /Continued…

Catenians and together with some committed locals the Peninsula Circle was inaugurated by Grand President Robin Oakley Smith on the 8th October 2002. Tom was the automatic choice to be its founding President, he remained a strong presence in Circle affairs for many years. Tom remained a member of Waverley Circle whilst Peninsula was being formed and attended his last meeting there in August 2002 just a few weeks prior to the inauguration such was his commitment to his first Circle. But the long drive up and back (1.5 hours each way) was difficult to maintain. That said, Tom ‘s first visit to Waverley as Peninsula President was in January 2003 to a joint Circle meeting with the City of Melbourne. Tom’s funeral Mass was attended by Catenians from all Melbourne Circles and the Catenian guard of honour as the casket left the church was a fitting farewell to a great friend and Catenian. Written by brothers of the Peninsula and Waverley Circles with extracts from the eulogy Tom’s brother Frank delivered at Tom’s funeral Mass.

Peacefully passed to eternal life on 1st February 2016

Please remember his Family in your prayers

PRAYER FOR THE DEPARTED…

Immortal God, Holy Lord, Father and protector of everything Thou hast created, we raise our hearts to Thee today for those who have passed out of this mortal life. In Thy loving mercy, Father of men, be pleased to receive them into Thy Heavenly company, and forgive them the failings and faults of human frailty. Thy only Son, Christ, our Saviour, suffered cruelly that He might deliver them from the second death. By His merits may they share in the glory of His victory over sin and death. We pray for all the faithful who have died, but in particular for those dear to us - parents, relatives and friends. Nor do we forget those who did us good while on earth, who helped us by their prayers, sacrifices, and example. We pray also for any who have done us harm and stand in need of Thy special forgiveness. May the merits of Our Virgin Mother Mary, and those of all Thy Angels and Saints, speak for us and assist them now. This we ask in Christ's name. Amen.

Pope Francis approves sainthood for Mother Teresa for September 4

The pontiff's announcement will mean she is elevated to an official icon for the Catholic faith later this year

Pope Francis on Tuesday approved sainthood for Mother Teresa, the missionary nun who became a global if

controversial symbol of compassion for her care of the sick and destitute.

The pontiff set September 4 as the date for her canonisation, elevating her to an official icon for the Catholic faith.

The move comes 19 years after the death of the Albanian nun who dedicated most of her adult life to working with

the poor of Kolkata, India.

The final step paving the way to sainthood comes 12 years after she was beatified by Pope John Paul II in a

ceremony that drew 300,000 pilgrims to Rome.

Details of the canonisation ceremony have not been released, but Vatican observers expect it to be held in Rome

as part of the Church’s Holy Year festivities.

Teresa, who was 87 when she died in 1997, was revered by Catholics and many others around the world.

She won the 1979 Nobel peace prize for her work with the poor.

But she was also a controversial and divisive figure with critics branding her a religious imperialist whose fervent

opposition to birth control and abortion ran contrary to the interests of the communities she claimed to serve.

Despite posthumously published letters revealing that she suffered crises of faith throughout her life, Teresa has

been fast-tracked to canonisation in unusually quick time, underlining her status as a modern-day icon of

Catholicism.

Teresa took the first step to sainthood in 2003 when she was beatified by Pope John Paul II following the

recognition of a claim she had posthumously inspired the 1998 healing of a critically-ill Bengali tribal woman.

Last year she was credited by Vatican experts with inspiring the 2008 recovery of a Brazilian man suffering from

multiple brain tumours, thus meeting the Church's standard requirement for sainthood of having been involved in

two certifiable miracles.

Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu to Albanian parents in 1910 in Skopje, now the capital of Macedonia.

She started her life as a nun as a teenager with a missionary order in Ireland and arrived in India in 1929.

After more than two decades of missionary and charity work, she founded her own Missionaries of Charity order

in 1950. She was granted Indian citizenship a year later.

The Pope, who regards Teresa as the incarnation of the kind of Church he wants to lead, met the by-then

internationally famous nun three years before her death, when he was still a bishop in Argentina.

He later joked that she had seemed so formidable he "would have been scared if she had been my mother

superior".

Others were much harsher in their judgment, with the likes of Australian-born feminist writer Germaine Greer and

British polemicist Christopher Hitchens accusing her of contributing to the misery of the poor with what they saw

as her dogmatic views.

/Continued on next page…

Pope Francis approves sainthood for Mother Teresa for September 4 Continued…

Critics have also called her evangelism overzealous and say her fervent opposition to birth control and abortion

belied the health needs of the destitute populations she served.

In her Nobel acceptance speech Teresa described terminations of pregnancies as "direct murder by the mother

herself".

Critics also raised questions about the Missionaries of Charity's finances and conditions in the order's hospices.

The late Italian film director and writer Pier Paolo Pasolini was among those who fell under her spell, in his case

when he met her during a trip to India in the early 1960s.

"She has an almost virile jaw and a gentle eye that in its gaze 'sees', he wrote, describing Teresa as a

combination of "goodness without sentimentality, someone with no expectations who is both calm and calming,

powerfully practical."

India granted her a state funeral after her death and her grave in the order's headquarters has since become a

pilgrimage site.

CAN YOU HELP US…

Dear Brothers, In 2009 Brother Deacon Tony Cunningham who works with the indigenous people in the Diocese of Darwin, Northern Australia, contacted us to ask if we could obtain Rosaries which he needed to assist with his work. With Our Lady’s help we have been more successful than we could have ever hoped and has spread to the Third World in Africa, Islands in the Pacific and Prisons in the U.K. The missions are ongoing and we will never fulfil the need. This comes as a cost with a 2k parcel requiring £13.26 postage. ($26.00). The U.K. Circles have been generous in supporting our work but more finance is needed for the many thousands of Rosaries which we still have to dispatch. Please may we ask you support our work by sending us whatever you can spare. This is Our Lady ‘s work – she is in charge – it is a great privilege for us to be working for her. Rev. WELCOME TO THE CATENIAN ROSARY GROUP

In June 2002 a group of Catenians on an ocean cruise met every day to pray the Holy Rosary and that stimulated discussion on somehow continuing the practice as part of our everyday lives. This led to the formation of the Catenian Rosary Group in October 2002 - joining the prayers of landlubbers to those on the ocean waves! As at Sept 1st 2014 there were nearly 1200 members, all praying the Holy Rosary every day. Membership is open to Brothers, Wives, Family Members and Widows. The latter find it especially helpful as it gives them a connection with their late husband’s Circle. Obligation of membership: to pray one decade of the Holy Rosary every day i.e. one Our Father, ten Hail Mary’s and one Glory Be (there is no penalty if the decade is missed…). The petition to be for ‘Our Lady’s Intentions’ except in May when it will be for ‘The Catenian Association and Those Taking Office’. For more information, see http://www.catenianrosary.com/index.htm The Group is also involved in collecting unused sets of Rosary Beads and sending them the Aboriginals in Australia and to third world Countries in Africa. As at June 2015 over 300.000 have been sent! See website for more details.

FINALLY. . .

Mother Teresa once said, “Keep the corners of your mouth turned up. Speak in a low, persuasive tone.

Listen; be teachable. Laugh at good stories and learn to tell them.”

It’s fun to tell jokes, however our words should always honor God. Jokes themselves are not sinful, but

in some cases, they certainly can be.

The Bible is full of references to laughter, which is the fruit of a good joke, but there is also a way to joke

that is demeaning and harmful.

As Men Of Valor we are called to “not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but

only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those

who listen” (Ephesians 4:29).

An elderly lady was well-known for her faith and for her boldness in expressing it.

She would stand on her front porch and shout “PRAISE THE LORD!”

Next door to her lived an atheist who would get so angry at her proclamations he would shout, “There

ain’t no Lord!!”

Hard times set in on the elderly lady, and she prayed for GOD to send her some assistance.

She stood on her porch and shouted “PRAISE THE LORD. GOD I NEED FOOD!! I AM HAVING A

HARD TIME. PLEASE LORD, SEND ME SOME GROCERIES!!”

The next morning the lady went out on her porch and noted a large bag of groceries and shouted,

“PRAISE THE LORD.”

The neighbor jumped from behind a bush and said, “Aha! I told you there was no Lord. I bought those

groceries, God didn’t.”

The lady started jumping up and down and clapping her hands and said, “PRAISE THE LORD. He not

only sent me groceries, but He made the devil pay for them. Praise the Lord!”
