We study all these topics holistically from the concept of an INTEGRATED Supply Chain
Supply Chain Issues for Caterpillar:• How many # units of each type of equipment are needed? (PLAN)• Where do all the parts come from for Caterpillar equipment? (SOURCE)• Caterpillar equipment is sold all over the world, but where is it produced? (MAKE)• How is Caterpillar equipment shipped to customers? (DELIVER)
Why SCM is important in the Bluegrass State!
Major OEM automobile manufacturers:
Toyota-Georgetown
Chevrolet Corvette-Bowling Green
Ford Truck Plant (FTP)-Louisville
>100s Tier-1 & Tier-2 auto parts suppliers
UPS Worldport-Louisville
General Electric-Louisville
Hitachi Automotive—over 2500 employees!
Lexmark International-Lexington
Corning Incorporated-Harrodsburg (100% export)
Current “model” for attracting SCM talent:1. Recruit from metropolitan areas (top SCM schools)
2. “Invest” in SCM talent for 2-3 years
3. SCM talent leaves (high turnover rate) to return ‘home’
4. Repeat Steps 1-3
At EKU we don’t ‘follow’—we ‘lead’
Comprehensive Bachelor’s degree option / program in Global Supply Chain Management
Bench-marked top-tier SCM schools to develop a ROBUST and COMPREHENSIVE SCM program for our students Penn State, Arizona State, Michigan State,
Tennessee, Southern Cal., et al
Very successful “launch”
Lots of progress in developing & enhancing alliances with leading firms in the region!
Earn Excellence: Engage, Examine, Expand, Emerge
Key Highlights Fall 2014-current1. Designed comprehensive Global Supply Chain Management program/curriculum
2. Updated (Q1/2015) EKU Board of Regents on Global Supply Chain Management program
3. Submitted all paperwork for having EKU added to the Institute of Supply Management (ISM) listing (annual directory + online) of colleges/universities offering Supply Chain degrees
4. Developed various ‘promotional material’ highlighting the GSCM program
5. Gave presentation entitled “An Overview of Eastern Kentucky University’s new Bachelor’s degree program in Global Supply Chain Management” at various civic events; gained support from community/business leaders.
6. ‘Educated’ EKU Admissions staff/senior administrators on GSCM program, career paths, etc.
7. Provided US Rep. Andy Barr (KY-R, 6th district) with a briefing on EKU’s Global Supply Chain Management program
8. Began ‘promoting’ GSCM field in core courses (ex. GBU201, BTO100, MGT300) in heightening student interest/curiosity
9. And the result is…we now have one of EKU’s fastest growing programs!
Earn Excellence: Engage, Examine, Expand, Emerge
Global Supply Chain Update
• Fall 2016: ~30 students (with GSCM as major) and one of EKU’s fastest growing programs!
While encouraging, the # of ‘declared’ majors may not be truly indicative of the growing interest in our program!
Ex.MKT431 (Logistics)• Fall 2014: 9 students (3 of which were
study-abroad students looking for an ‘elective’)
• Fall 2016: 27 students!
Many recent EKU graduates pursuing careers in Supply Chain! (even those that did not major in SCM)

Courses in each of the major pillars of Supply Chain
PlanSourceMakeDeliver
MKT315 Logistics/Transportation
MKT431 Procurement
MGT370 Operations Management
MGT375 Supply Chain Management
Many students (non-SCM majors) assessing value in understanding ‘core SCM’ areas Example: high ‘pull’ from Accounting students
due to SCM’s intensive study of ‘costs’ (transportation, raw materials, packaging, supplier development, etc.)
In summary…• Significant progress made over the past 3+ years—very
pleased, but much work to be done!
• Many ideas and plans to take advantage of the ‘positive momentum’
• Assessing other opportunities to “grow” the Supply Chain program:
• Supply Chain Executive education• Flexible course offerings (ex. evenings)• MBA courses in SCM
• Ongoing emphasis on developing alliances & partnerships with leading firms in the region
• We (EKU) want to be the first school employers think of re top SCM talent in the region!
