By Dan JonesDean was reared in an area of

Columbus known as North Lindenand graduated from Mifflin HighSchool. It seems unusual that duringthe late 1940’s and 1950’s that aboutfourteen families who were his closeneighbors in this area were involvedwith racing cars. Dean was almostdoomed to become involved withracing and cars. He was a tall lankyindividual who wanted to playbasketball when he went to highschool, but he was told after aphysical that would not be possiblebecause of a heart murmur. Dean’sneighbor Elzie Wethnall loved towork with cars and to race. He tookDean under his wing and taught hima lot about auto mechanics, weldingand building a car. Dean would latermarry Elzie’s niece, Betty.

Dean came to love working withcars, and he became so mechanicallyskillful that during his last two yearsof high school he was an assistantindustrial arts teacher at the school. The young fourteen-year-oldworked with Elzie in preparing carsto race in 1947. Working on cars andracing them was to become a passionfor the rest of his life.

During the late forties and earlyfifties he raced at dirt track car racesaround Central Ohio. One of themost famous tracks was at theColumbus Motor Speedway in

Obetz. He noted that one night atthe Columbus Speedway there fivefamily members in the various racesand they lived in the Linden area. Most of the races during this timewere held on half-mile dirt tracksand many of these were located atthe various fairgrounds in the areasuch as the one at the FairfieldCounty Fairgrounds. These raceswere often dangerous and there werenumerous wrecks. In 1957, he wenton a hiatus from racing as he was onactive duty in the army. When hereturned to racing a couple of yearslater, most of the dirt tracks had beenreplaced by paved ones.

One incident which occurred in1950, when Dean was 16 happenedin a race at the RichwoodFairgrounds. He was involved in aserious accident and the next thinghe remembered, he was lying on theground in a pool of blood and afterthat he doesn’t remember. He laterfound out from a friend that theambulance driver had fainted, butthere was a doctor in the stands who, along with a nurse, had stitched awound above his eye. He apparentlyhad a serious head injury thataffected his memory and he drovehome with a serious concussion. They brought his car home in adump truck.

During the years he was racing,he always had a second job, such as

working at the Shiff ShoeWarehouse for twenty years, maintenance supervisor at theDepartment of Natural Resources inMillersport and later operating afilling station, Stookey’s Sohio, inMillersport. With his “day job” hewas able to provide for the needs ofhis family and the money he earnedfrom racing was invested in hispassion for the sport.

The early years were spent racingroadsters on dirt tracks but he laterraced larger, more powerful cars onpaved tracks such as the Pro Fourracing cars and he still has one ofthese in his garage. He told me thatat one time he even raced midgets.

Dean has memorabilia fromsome of the more famous race cardrivers such as Dale Earnhardt,Richard Petty and Bobby Allisonand he had the chance to get to knowthese famous drivers while inFlorida. These mementos are ondisplay in his garage along withpictures of racing cars he had in thepast and news clippings from hisown racing days.

Dean’s wife, Betty Stookey(Wethnall), grew up in the sameLinden neighborhood and her familywas involved with racing. Her unclewas Elzie Wethnall who introducedDean to the world of cars and racingat the age of 14. Dean’s daughter,Theresa, later married Bob Cumbowwho is building and racing modifiedracers presently. Maybe cars andracing were just a part of herheritages she could not escape. Bobworks with a young driver, BrianWethnall, who is related to Dean’swife and whose ancestors were fromthe Linden area. He told me that hefigures that he is 3rd generation ofracer from Linden. He hadjust competed in a race the weekbefore I did the interview withDean.

After Dean retired from racing in1998, he and his wife would go toFlorida for the winter months and hewould work in the pits at theDaytona and New Smyrnaracetracks. There were people fromthe Columbus area who wereinvolved with racing and he wouldhelp out. He also helped a group ofmechanics to build a race car.During his retirement he has restoredtwo very nice vehicles - one is a1933 Daytona race car and a 1946Ford truck which he has at his homein Millersport. He takes them tovarious car shows and parades in thearea. He has a garage full ofmemorabilia from present and pastracing. Being able to live his life onthe “edge” he has considered ablessing. During the week, his lifewas lived at a normal pace, but onthe weekend when most of theracing was done, he had an“adrenaline rush” from theexcitement of the sport. In talkingwith him, he is still as excited aboutthe sport as he was back in the1940’s when he started.

(I would like to thank Dean forteaching me something about theworld of racing with a smile.)

Do you struggle with time? Do youcatch yourself saying “There is justnot enough time!” I think we all havebeen guilty of trying to find time forall of the various things that arepulling at us. I know that I would loveto have more time to fit in all theprojects that I want to accomplish, the

people I want to spend time with, thebooks I want to read, etc., etc., etc.Sound familiar? So what's the answer?

Years ago, I thought that if I couldmanage my time better, then all mytroubles would be over. I took timemanagement seminars, listened to autocassettes about time management and

incorporated the time organizers intomy every day life. To some degree ithelped. I still plan out my days/weeksto make my time work most efficientfor me. However, no matter how muchI planned, I found that ultimately timecannot be managed! We all only have24 hours in a day (1440 minutes) touse to accomplish what we choose.Rich or poor, we are all equal in theamount of time that is allotted to us.There is no way to get more.Frustrating isn't it? So, I repeat, whatis the answer?

In counseling thousands of patientsover the years, I recognize that time isnot the problem. The problem ispoorly defined priorities. My patient’slevel of frustration was in directrelation to how muddied theirpriorities were. Because they had notstopped to consider which things werethe most important in their life-rather,they spent too much time chasing theirtails and not accomplishing the thingsthat would most benefit and enrichtheir lives. When you establish themost important thing in the world foryou to do, then and only then, timewill take care of itself. Let me explain. If I came to your house and peekedinto your closet, you might declarethat you have been meaning toreorganize it but you have been toobusy. I disagree. I suspect it was notthe lack of time that was the problem. It is the fact that, cleaning your closethas not been a priority for you. If ithad been a priority, you would havefound the time to clean it! Ourpriorities almost always get donebecause we find/make time toaccomplish them. The things thataren't a priority are not importantenough to us in the big picture and welet them slide. Does my judgmentseem a little harsh? Realistically, unless you take the time to prioritizewhat is truly important in your life, you will continue to spin your tiresand waste your time and energy onthings that you do not truly value. Is

that what you really want to continueto do?

Ask yourself: Do you have thingsin your life that need to be done, thingsthat you really want to accomplish, butyou have not been able to find the timeto accomplish them? I think it is reallyimportant that you realize right now, this very moment, the fact that you arenever going to get them done untilthey become a large enough priorityto you. It might be time to figure outwhat is really important to you andESTABLISH YOUR PRIORITIES!Now, let's talk about how to makeyour health a priority. If you reallythink that your health is a top priority, then you will not allow work, television, friends, relatives, or all theother of life's distractions take priorityover your goals. Eating a proper diet,stretching/exercising regularly andcommitting to a positive vs. negativeoutlook about life, are all prioritiesthat will enrich your life. Skip anepisode of Wheel of Fortune, and takea walk or use the commercial timebetween your favorite shows to stretchor slowly cycle on a stationary bike.Turn off the phone for an hour andallow your family to slowly eat ahealthy, nutritious meal and reconnectwith each other after a busy day. Is notthat more important than anotherepisode of a TV show or one more textmessage? Even better, you could turnoff the technology in the evening andspend time reading, playing games orjust talking to your family and friends. How much more relaxing andrewarding than one more realityshow? By making your health andfamily your first priority, all of theother time issues will fix themselves.Obviously, we often have to spendtime doing the things that we enjoy theleast. Running errands, meeting therepairman, mowing the lawn, etc., alltake time and energy. We all havethem to deal with. That's life! The keyis to get them done and have time forwhat we really value. Right?

I would recommend that you quittelling yourself that you don't haveenough time. There is plenty of timeto not only take care of the mundanethings in our lives, but also the time toaccomplish the things that you trulyvalue. When we have clearly definedpriorities then we will make sure thatwe put the important things first. Iknow that time seems to get shorter aswe age, so why are we wasting itdoing things that will not enrich ourlives? There will never be enough timeto accomplish everything that weprefer to do, but there is alwaysenough time to do what we really wantand need to get done. If you want itbadly enough, you will find the timeor make the time! Make yourself apriority and enjoy the journey! HistoryThe church was formally

organized on February 26, 1894, andthe corner stone was laid June17,1894. The dedication of the new

church took place on October 21,1894. The cost of construction andfurnishings for the church amountedto $3,000. The first pastor of the newlyorganized church was Rev. F.W.

Loewenstein, and the newcongregation became part of a fourpoint parish which was served by onepastor. The other members of thisparish were Saint Matthew (SugarGrove), Emanuel (Hideway-Hills) andSt. Paul (North Berne).

Many improvements have beendone at the Grace church over theyears. In 1915 the church was paintedand a small addition was added alongwith the installation of stained glasswindows and a new hot air furnacewas installed. New chancel furniturewas added in 1935, and in 1938 thebuilding was wired for electricity. Anew Baldwin organ was donated to thecongregation in 1945. Ground wasbroken on July 30, 1949, for a newaddition to the church and the additionwas completed on January 29, 1950.

In the mid-1950’s, Grace movedfrom a four point parish to a two pointparish which consisted of Grace andSt. Paul church at North Berne, and in1976, the Grace church was served by

one full time pastor and has remainedas a single congregation with its ownfull-time pastor until the present day.
