“Easter at King’s goes from strength to multi-faceted strength”BBC Music Magazine 2013

STEPHEN CLEOBURYArtistic Director (Paul Grover)

REVD DR STEPHEN CHERRYDean

I am delighted to be able to invite you again to our EasterFestival. ‘Easter at King’s’, now in its 13th year, has become well-known not only in Cambridge, but, like the Festival of NineLessons and Carols, around the world. This is not least a result ofthe support of BBC Radio 3, which has broadcast from thefestival annually. This year the microphones will be in Chapel onGood Friday for the Brahms Requiem, in which we are joined byour regular artists, the BBC CO and the Philharmonia Chorus. TheRequiem will be prefaced by a short sequence of seasonal musicsung by the Chapel Choir. It has been our practice to alternatethe two great Passion settings of Bach, but this time, both the StMatthew and St John will be heard, giving a special opportunityfor listeners to compare these monumental works. Purelyinstrumental music is provided through the inclusion ofMessiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, and, with the return ofthe magnificently restored Harrison organ, the resumption of theannual organ recital on Bank Holiday Monday. Transcriptions forthe organ have come into fashion again, and I am particularlylooking forward to hearing Rachmaninoff on the instrument.

As always, the dramatic and moving narrative of Holy Week andEaster is reflected in our regular services, which now include lateevening Compline, sung this year by the choral scholars. Togetherwith Joy Lisney, a graduate musician at King's, they will also beproviding the music for a Maundy Thursday meditation on thework of Julian of Norwich devised by the Dean.

I welcome John McMunn, who has succeeded Sarah Chambre asFestival & Concerts Manager, and I thank not only those in theCollege who are supportive of the Festival, but also, and crucially, our many generous donors, without whose munificence theconcerts could not take place.

Stephen Cleobury CBE, Director of Music and Artistic Director

As Dean I warmly invite you to consider spending some part ofHoly Week or Easter Day with us in our beautiful Chapel.Whether it is for a late night service of Compline, one of ouraustere liturgies of Good Friday, or at one of the wonderfulconcerts, you will be sharing in the most intense and spirituallydeep moments of the Christian year in a place of stunning beauty.

Holy Week and Easter touch the depths as well as the heights ofhuman hope and experience, and together make up anextraordinary journey into God’s reality where wisdom, mercyand love are the primary values.

So do join us. Come for the music, come for the words, come forthe inspiration and come for the beauty. Come to share insomething spiritual and special, something healing and holy.Come for the sheer enjoyment – and keep your mind and heartopen so that you might be moved and perhaps even a littlechanged by your experience.

The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry, Dean
