Do you remember what sin is? It is when we do something that breaks God’s rules. We all do that sometimes. And because we break His rules we deserve punishment. But God loves us so much He sent His Son Jesus to take our punishment for us if we love and trust him. Read Rom 5:8 He did this by dying on the Cross, taking the punishment for all the sins of all who love him. Because of this we are forgiven

You see, Jesus had known he would be treated badly and crucified (put to death on a cross). He had said this would happen. Read Matt 20:17-19. What else did Jesus say would happen? He would rise to life on the third day. Despite everything his enemies did, they could not stop this from happening. What happened was amazing and exciting.

How do you think Jesus’ friends felt when he was hung and killed on the Cross? Sad, angry, confused… After Jesus was killed, he was buried in a tomb. It was sort of like a small cave. A huge stone was rolled over the doorway to keep it closed. Also, guards were placed to make sure no one came and messed with the tomb. Do you know why? Read Matt 27:62-66

Two women who were Jesus’ friends went to see the tomb. A great earthquake shook the ground. And an angel came from the sky and rolled away the stone. How do you think the guards and women felt? Scared? The angel said to the women, “Don’t be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.”

Jesus lives! He defeated sin and death. Death could not hold him! We worship a risen, living Jesus.

“He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.”

Matthew 28:6 Then the angel said to go tell the disciples that he has risen from the dead. All who love Jesus need to know that…

This is great news for those who trust and follow Jesus. Because he defeated death, those who love him don’t have to be afraid of death. We can know Jesus is God as he said he is, and that he has the power to forgive us from our sins. We can know we will live in heaven with Jesus some day!

Tie it Up (5 min) Today we learned what Easter Sunday is all about. It is best to call it Resurrection Sunday. Why is that? Because it is the celebration of the day Jesus was raised from the dead.

Worship (5 min)

Play songs from Worship CD: Your choice this week. Time accordingly.

It is one of the most important days for Christians (followers of Jesus). We know the truth of the power of Jesus. We know that because he lives, he helps us in our lives. We know that because he lives, those who love him will live in heaven on day. We worship a risen, living Jesus!

Prayer (5 min) Ask for prayer needs. Encourage the children to pray aloud. Lead children in praising the risen Jesus. Thank God for making a way for us to one day live in heaven with Him.

Goin’ Home Instruct Children to draw a picture of the empty tomb with a stone rolled away. Have them explain to their parents why the tomb is empty. Hand out “Family Plan” and “Verse Card”

Goin’ Home

“Family Plan”

This week your child learned that Jesus loves him or her so much he was willing to be put to death on the Cross so their sins may be forgiven. But they also learned Jesus rose again! This gives us great promise and hope, knowing Jesus conquered death, that he is God, and we can trust him. The verse for the week is Matthew 28:6. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Matt. 28:6

Please take 5 minutes or so each day to recite the verse with your child, discuss the questions for the day, and pray with them.

MONDAY Do you remember when we talked about sin? What is sin? It is disobeying God. Who sins? Read Romans 3:23 We all do. Every one of us. And it separates us from being close to God. Do you think we deserve punishment for breaking the rules of the perfect, loving, Holy God who created us? We certainly do. But because God loves us He has made a way for us to be forgiven and to be close to Him again. We will talk about this more tomorrow. Application: We all sin and deserve punishment PRAY (Tell God we know we sin and are sorry. Thank Jesus for bringing not what people want but what people need! Salvation from our sin and peace with God!)

TUESDAY How did God provide a way for us to be forgiven of our sins? Read Romans 5:6,8. Even while we were still sinning, Jesus came and died on the Cross for us so we could be forgiven and be close to him if we love and trust Jesus. This is what we celebrated last Friday. We remembered the day Jesus was killed on the Cross and took the punishment for all our sins. That is why it is called Good Friday. How does what happened on Good Friday make you feel? What do you think about it? Application: Jesus took the punishment of all our sins for us. PRAY (thank Jesus for his great love and sacrifice for us)

WEDNESDAY After Jesus died on the Cross he was buried in a tomb with a great stone rolled in front of it. Guards were also placed there. Why? Read and discuss Matt 27:62-66 Did Jesus really say he would rise again? Read and discuss Matt 20:17-19. Did he have the power to do that? Read and discuss John 10:17-18 Application : Jesus said he would live again. Remind your child to draw a picture of an empty tomb and explain why it is empty. PRAY (give praise to Jesus. Death can’t hold him)

THURSDAY Read and discuss Matthew 28:1-10 What is the great news! Jesus is alive! How did the women feel about this (great joy)? How do you feel? Those who saw him worshipped him. They knew he was God! What were they told to do? Tell others. What should we do? Worship Jesus and tell others. Who have you told about the Good News of Jesus and Easter? Who could you tell? Application: Jesus lives! He is worthy to worship! PRAY (give praise to the risen Jesus)

FRIDAY Why do you think it is important that Jesus rose from the grave? What are some of the reasons? It shows his power as God. It shows he keeps his promises. It shows he has defeated sin and death. It shows that if we love, trust and follow Jesus we are forgiven of our sins and also will live again with him in heaven after we die. It shows us the Jesus we love and worship is alive, able to help and comfort us. It shows us our faith in Jesus is right and good! Application: The resurrection of Jesus is worthy to be celebrated. PRAY (praise the risen Jesus. Thank him for what the resurrection teaches us).

SATURDAY Read 1 Corinthians 15:17. What is this verse telling us? What is the problem? Verse 18 helps. When Paul says, “Fallen asleep,” he means died. Verse 19 sums it up. If our faith in Jesus gives us a hope for this life only, it is a terrible thing for us. But if Jesus has been raised from the dead, we can KNOW that if we believe in him, we too will be raised to eternal life! Read John 3:16. Guess what! 1 Corinthians 15:20 says that in fact, Jesus has been raised form the dead! And we so we can know that we also will have eternal life! Sunday your child was asked to draw a picture of the empty tomb. Have him or her show it to you and explain why it is empty. If they haven’t done it, do it together. PRAY (thank God for the empty tomb, how it shows that Jesus defeated sin and death)
