The children received a thank you from the Council saying “not only did they rise to the challenge, they spoke eloquently and beautifully. I have had many emails from both other speakers and guests commending them for their speeches.” The children had been working with famous author Antony Lishak to learn about the story of Irena Sendler, who rescued Jews from German-occupied Warsaw during the Second World War. Eastbury children impress Barking CouncilOn 28th January, a group of year 6 children gave a very moving Holocaust Memorial Day presentation to the Mayor and Council at Barking Town Hall.

The children received a thank you from the Council saying “not only did they rise to the challenge, they spoke eloquently and beautifully. I have had many emails from both other speakers and guests commending them for their speeches.”

The children had been working with famous author Antony Lishak to learn about the story of Irena Sendler, who rescued Jews from German-occupied Warsaw during the Second World War. The children reflected on the rele-vance that her example of humanity and resistance has to their lives. Here are some extracts of their work:

Imagine what a happy and safe place this world would be with no ignorance and hatred – only peace and kindness. We are all equal. You can’t judge by appearance. Everyone is the same. It doesn’t matter what reli-gion you are, or whether you’re rich or poor. Just as Martin Luther King had a dream, mine is that to make the world a better place. Samir 6D

The Police visit Nursery

The children in nursery have been learning about people who help us. They were very lucky to have a visit from some police officers who talked to them about their role in society. The children asked the police officers a range of questions. They were very excited to be given the opportunity to both try on the policeman’s helmet and sit in the police van. A wonderful time was had by children and staff alike.

Attendance discos

Our regular attendance discos will be held on Friday 15th February during the school day. If your child has attended school every day gaining 100% attendance this half-term they will receive an invite to the disco, where they will get to dance and enjoy the celebration.

Active Dance in Reception

Children in RD have been given the chance to take part in the ‘active dance programme.’ This exciting oppurtunity means that every Friday afternoon for the next seven weeks the children will be taught dance by an expert alongside their teacher. This programme will then be shared with all reception children. If you would like more information, or to come and join us, please speak to Mrs Bailey!

Year 4 Chinese New Year Assembly

We would like to invite parents and carers to the year 4 Chinese New Year Assembly on Friday 8th February at 9.30am. If you would like to watch the performance, please come to the school’s main office at 9:20am.

Year 6 visit Westminster Abbey

On 25th January, year 6 visited Westminster Abbey. They found out all about the history of the building and visited the cloisters, where they had lunch. One of the highlights for the children was sitting in the Abbey’s choir stalls!

Thank you to the parent helpers who supported our great year 6 team and made this visit possible.

Year 4 visit the Natural History Museum

Last week year 4 visited the Natural History Museum. This supported learning on their topic ‘Footprints from the past’. Children participated in exciting workshops and visited various fossil sections, with a focus on Dinosaurs. They really enjoyed their visit, broadening their knowledge and understanding of the past. The children commented: “We really enjoyed our visit to the Natural History Museum, especially the Dinosaur Fossil Workshop where we had to be Palaeontologists digging for fossils.”

Thank you to the parent helpers who supported our great year 4 team and made this visit possible.

Building a successful future for our children

At Eastbury, we want every child to achieve their full potential and to be ready for future success. Hearing about parents’ careers can really help to inspire the children to work hard at school. If you would be interested in coming into school to talk to children about your career, please let Mr Wilson or Mrs Shepherd know.

Children’s Rights Day

Last week Eastbury celebrated Children’s Rights Day. During the day classes from nursery to year 6 learnt about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and shared a right with the school.

There are 54 rights in the Convention, setting out the things that every child should have or be able to do. As children grow older, they have more responsibility to make choices and exercise their rights. In every newsletter from now until the end of the year we would like to share with you the rights your child learnt about.

Right 1

Every child under the age of 18 has these rights.

Right 2

All children have these rights, no matter who they are, where they live, what their parents do, what language they speak, what their religion is, whether they are a boy or girl, what their culture is, whether they have a disability, whether they are rich or poor. No child should be treated unfairly on any basis.

Right 3

All adults should do what is best for the child. When adults make decisions, they should think about how their decisions will affect children.

International Week

This week we celebrated International week and our children explored and learnt about the religions, cultures, languages, geography and history of different countries.

On Wednesday, children and staff celebrated their own cultures and backgrounds, proudly wearing traditional clothes or the colours of their flags. It was an amazing day for our pupils - full of activities and excitement all around the school. As a result of the non-uniform day and your donations, we raised £249.82, which we will use for cultural and multilingual resources. Thank you very much!

Throughout the week our children worked very hard and produced work of high quality and variety, which was displayed for parents in the main hall on Friday.
