PRINCIPAL’S CORNER
Welcome to Spring! It’s finally here. Spring is one of our favourite times of the year be-cause the days grow longer, everything begins to bloom, and we can look forward to the lawns greening up! Imagine … from snowblower to lawnmower in a few short weeks.
At Eastbourne Drive P.S. spring is a time when we are well settled into our classroom routines and expectations and we are able to see the results of all the successful learning that has taken place over the year. It is definitely a time to look back and say, "Wow! Look how far we’ve come!"
During the month of March our students enjoyed the unique Jungle Sports program. It was a wonderful experience and not only did our students have fun, they learned about safety, balance, and challenged their fears. See our special “centerfold” of pictures in this issue.
Looking forward to April, Eastbourne Drive P.S. will host several special activities and events to celebrate Education Week 2014 from April 21 to 25. The theme for this year's two week-long focus on education is “We Inspire”. This will be an exciting time of activi-ties where parents, staff and students can celebrate education together. Our parent activities are on Thursday, April 24th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and include a tour of the new Kin-dergarten area, a“Chat & Chai” to discuss math in the Library, and there will also be a Book Fair.
The eight week swimming program for our grades 4 and 5 has begun at Earnscliffe Recreation Centre and will go through to May 23. Wishing you all a wonderful and warm April!
Ms. Casey and Mrs. Salman
LATE? … NOT GREAT! Students who are continually late cause unacceptable disruption to the teaching and learning environment, not to mention delay the calls for safe arrival. Here is a reminder of our schedule:
8:30 am: Outdoor supervision begins 8:40 am: Outside bell rings to bring students inside school 8:45 am: Students should be in their homeroom.
If students are not in homeroom by 8:45 a.m., they are considered late. Please…. Don’t be late!

An Important Message About Pizza Days Now that the Pizza Day program is well under way, we have a better understanding of the logistics in organizing this event to ensure every student has an opportunity to enjoy some pizza.
That said, all pizza money must be received on or before Mondays by 1:00 p.m. You may also pay in advance for the entire period, a few weeks at a time, or the Thursday or Friday beforehand. This will ensure that your child will have pizza even
if they are away on a Monday. If you would like your child to enjoy pizza for lunch on Wednesdays please send $2.00 per slice with your child before 1:00 p.m. MONDAYs.
EXACT CHANGE ONLY, PLEASE! We are unable to make change. All proceeds from all pizza sales go towards technology for our school. Note: All pizzas are made with Halal products.
EASTBOURNE STARS - “HONESTY” We are proud to present our Eastbourne Drive P. S. Character Award recipients the month of March for the trait of “Honesty”:

EARTH WEEK April 21 - 25, 2014 - EARTH DAY April 22
Earth Week encompasses the international celebration of Earth Day on April 22. This is the most celebrated environmental event worldwide. Initiated in 1970, this event has been considered the birth of the environmental movement.
Each year, more than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the profusion of events and projects. Here are some ways that you can celebrate earth week with your family:
create a backyard or schoolyard habitat plant a garden or tree start a recycling program at home
organize a carpooling campaign in your neighbourhood to reduce air pollution pick up trash in your neighbourhood
read a book about an endangered species make a visit to your local zoo, aquarium or museum visit a local park, wildlife area or farm to provide a fun opportunity to learn about the environment and life
PRINCIPAL CASEY CELEBRATES ONE YEAR at EASTBOURNE I wish to take a minute to share how much I’ve enjoyed my first year at Eastbourne Drive Public School.
I have quickly come to see how “many hands make l ight work” . The collaborative manner in which the staff, parents and students support one another is really remarkable – and explains why Eastbourne Drive P.S. has such a positive and healthy school climate.
This first year has also shown me how staff, parents and students go “above and beyond” to enhance this fantastic school. For example, there’s all the extra-curricular activities teachers offer our students, all the volunteer work our School Council parents provide in both fundraising and “fun-raising”, and, of course, our amazing students volunteering as office helpers, and in many other ways each and every day.
Like you, I am truly looking forward to many more years of exciting and innovative opportunities! Thank you for helping to make this first year a memorable one.
All the best to you and yours!

EDUCATION WEEK Peel public schools will host hundreds of special activities and events to celebrate Education Week 2014. To give schools plenty of time to hold activities, this celebration of education will be held
for two weeks from April 14 to 25. Eastbourne Drive Public School will be holding their celebrations during the week of April 21—25. The theme for this year's focus on education is “We Inspire”.
Activities at Eastbourne Drive Public School will include:
Chai & Chat in the Library—Topic: Math
Book Fair
Tour of the new Kindergarten classrooms
All of these activities are open to parents on Thursday, April 24th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
One of the highlights of Education Week is the presentation of Awards of Excellence. The award recipients are students, volunteers, staff and community partners who have made outstanding contributions to public education in Peel. The awards will be presented to 32 deserving recipients at the Showcase of Excellence ceremony on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the board room, HJA Brown Education Centre, 5650 Hurontario St., Mississauga.
More than 1,100 individuals will also be honoured during Education Week with Awards of Distinction for their contributions to their school or workplace.
Each year, more than 50,000 parents and community members across Peel attend activities and events during Education Week. We are looking forward to an equally successful week this year.

KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE IN AND AROUND STORM SEWERS, WATERWAYS Rising and fast moving water in lakes, ponds and creeks is increasingly likely during spring. Children playing in and around storm sewers and watercourses, entering storm sewers through the outfalls, and entering storm sewers through access covers is dangerous. The following information will help keep children safe:
water flows in storm sewers and watercourses are unpredictable and may change quickly
toxic gases may be present in and around storm sewers and watercourses
access is restricted, making rescue attempts are difficult
tragic falls could take place
Please review this information with your children and let them know how dangerous storms sewers and waterways are.

NEW KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOMS - UPDATE Our kindergarten classes had a smooth transition into their new classrooms after March Break. The building of the new addition was very seamless and very little disruption to our staff and students, this is all thanks to the excellent team that worked together to make it possible. Orion Construction led by owner Gennady Gorodetsky and site supervisor Shakir Shakori, they really out did themselves when building our new classrooms. I want to thank Sonia Lopes, the Project manager for an outstanding job providing invaluable experience to me and the school to ensure the construction phase went as smooth as possible. Thank you to Todd Thompson from Allen & Sherriff Architects who designed our new addition that is full of natural light
and an excellent design for learning. A huge thank you to our Head Custodian, Edgar Gomez, who was able to consistently maintain a very clean school even amongst the construction.
Now that we have such a beautiful addition to our school, our Trustee Beryl Ford, along with our Facilities Manager, Kent Murray, are advocating for our existing classrooms to be refurbished and updated. We have received word that our two classes by the office will be updated with new shelving, cupboards and tiles in the washrooms. Mr. Murray has also confirmed that all the existing classes will be painted. We will also be replacing the cupboards in these classrooms with new ones. This project will be phased in over 3 years. The work will begin shortly since the classrooms are currently not occupied. To ensure there is as little disruption to students as possible, all students in the portables will stay there until the end of the school year. With the classrooms empty, the work can begin shortly so it is completed before the new school year begins in September. We are very excited to have our classrooms painted and updated to match the new addition. We thank you for your understanding.
