Donkey Basketball!
On March 12, the EVHS FFA Chapter hosted a Donkey Basketball fundraiser. Four teams played: Student Team—FFA shirts, Staff Team—Black, EV Alumni Team—Green, and Admin Team—White. It was a tough competition with great support from the crowd. This was a true community event—one that we hope will continue in the future. The winner of the championship game was the Admin Team!

NEW BOOKS! In the 2018-2019 school year, the EVHS Library revamped its collection in more ways than one. By the close of the school year, we will have added nearly 600 new titles to our collection, most of which are located in the newly genrefied fiction section (more on that below). The feedback from students has been great, and the circulation numbers show that an updated collection is increasing our school’s reading population. If you’d like to check out our new books, stop by the library or take a look at the new library website: evhs-library.weebly.com. You can also follow us on Instagram at: @evhs_library.
WE’VE BEEN GENREFIED! Perhaps the biggest project that EVHS library staff took on this year was genrefying the fiction collection. Each book was examined to see how often (or even if) it was checked out. Many books were weeded because of damage, excess copies, or lack of use. Then we assigned each book a genre based on its content, a new genre sticker was placed on its spine. After this was done to all the fiction books, we reorganized them. Now when you walk into our library, our fiction books are organized by genre, much like a bookstore, which makes our collection much easier to browse. Everything is marked with bright signs
and color-coded shelf organizers. Stop by and check it out!
MATH CLINIC: Each Wednesday the library hosts a math clinic after school. Community volunteers, teachers, and some advanced calculus students offer their expertise to students who need help in math. During the first semester, we saw an average of 25-30 students each week. Though it’s slowed down considerably in the second semester, we’re seeing students get more one-on-one help. If math is a struggle, we’re here to help!
STEPHANIE OAKES IS VISITING EVHS ON APRIL 17! Washington State Book Award winner, Stephanie Oakes, is coming to EVHS April 17 to discuss her book, The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly. Forty-seven students signed up to participate and were given a copy of the book to read. In addition to reading the novel, students are also required to complete a quiz, research the author, and devise questions to ask during her visit. We are honored and delighted to have Stephanie as our guest!
APRIL POETRY CONTEST: Every month the library hosts a contest. In honor of National Poetry Month, the library is hosting a poetry contest and “found poetry” event in April! Each interested student should write an original poem on the theme “Happiness is…” and submit it to the library. A group of local poets will choose the winner. In addition to our contest, we will also be holding a “found poetry” event. Students can come into the library during both lunches to create a work of art by compiling random words cut from magazine headlines. If students are inclined, they can submit their found poem to the contest.
“The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.”—Albert Einstein

On Saturday, March 9, the East Valley High School music department had a wonderful weekend at Solo & Ensemble competition. While there were many fine performances, and superior ratings, we also had many winners who will continue on to compete at the Washington State Solo & Ensemble competition the end of April.
Students in AP/College in the High School American Government class engage in an interactive game on redistricting and gerrymandering. Depending on the level, students have to redistrict based on population, incumbency, political party, etc. Their plan must please the candidates, be approved by the governor, and if challenged—be approved by the Court. Jared Hathaway had success with all involved!

Tips for Talking to Your Teen About Alcohol
Choose an appropriate time. Discuss your
expectations well in advance of any special
events such as homecoming, prom, spring break,
or graduation.
Be clear and consistent about
expectations and consequences. Explain to
your teen why you disapprove of underage
drinking and the consequences that will occur if
he or she chooses to drink.
Listen to your teen. Ask open-ended
questions like, “What pressures are you dealing
with?” or “What can I do to help?”
Keep communicating. Remember to talk
with your teen and not preach or lecture.

PACE is a grassroots Spokane Valley initiative to promote the importance of good character through partnerships with schools, businesses, public agencies, residents, faith-based organizations and community service groups. Working from a common list of monthly character traits (http://pacecommunity.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/pace-traits-defined-flyer.pdf), partners promote and integrate each trait into the regular activities of the organization. The character trait for February was Honesty– Sincerity and reverence or love for the truth. We would like to recognize the following students for exhibiting this character trait: Rayna Anderson, Logan Bush, Jaynee Chapman, Emilia Clementa, Thomas Farrar, Layla Ferguson, Gage Henderson, Jeremy Kanzleiter, Johnny Mendivil, Kaley Rich, Jessica Roberts, and Victoria Sarioglo. Keep up the great work!

~East Valley Knowledge Bowl Team Competes at Eastern Washington Regional Tournament~
The EVHS Knowledge Bowl Team finished in 2nd Place in the 2A Division at the
Eastern Washington Regional Championship Tournament. The team was led by
Zephrym Bush, Captain; and included Noah Haight, Gage Nielsen, Al Carlson, Riley
Wallwork, and Alex Hagood. The students have been working hard since September
to practice for this final competition and they did a great job. Congratulations on a
great season!
Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday in French, and it is believed this
tradition has been celebrated in New Orleans since sometime
around 1699. Each year, students spend some quality time
talking about this tradition, as well as making masks to
celebrate the holiday. They then vote on class awards.

In an effort to entertain and inform the 8th graders at East Valley Middle School, the East Valley CTE Department put on a course and activities fair. The idea was to bring the elective courses and student organizations of the high school Career and Technical Education department to the middle school students. The “carnival style” fair included tosses, spins, drops, guesses, and tries; with loads of candy, cookies, smiles, and giggles. The desired result was achieved with lots of interaction between high school and middle school students, as the 8th graders prepared to “Find Their Fit” before they register for their freshman year classes. CTE programs represented included Agriculture (FFA), American Sign Language (ASL), Business and Marketing (DECA and FBLA), Computer Sciences (FBLA), Family and Consumer Sciences, Robotics, Manufacturing and Fabrication, and Yearbook/Photography. In addition, INTEC, SCC, EWU, and Whitworth were also getting their mes-sages across to the incoming 9th graders. Special thank you to Amy Tellinghusen, CTE Director, and Dave Rovick, EVMS Gear-Up Coordinator, for spearheading the “Find Your Fit Fair”.

The EVHS Robotics Team—team 2148—the MechaKnights—completed another successful season.
The team completed building the robot in six weeks, ending the build portion of the season on the
“stop build day”, February 19, when the robot is placed in a huge plastic bag and all work must cease
until our first competition. Our first competition was held in the Yakima Sundome March 14-16. We
operated well but were not chosen to compete in the placing rounds. The next weekend we were able
to stay home and compete at the West Valley District Championship event March 21-23. We scored
better at West Valley, and at one time were ranked as high as 13th. We were chosen to be in the
placing round and made it as far as the quarterfinals. This was another successful year of the “hardest
fun you will ever have”! We would like to thank our sponsors: f5inc., Wagstaff, O.S.P.I, and First WA.
We would also like to thank our volunteer mentors: Jeremy Niemi, Brent Bar (f5inc.), Kevin Bowers,
Ethan Cope, and Robert Stark.

Spring Assessment News Kevin Weberg, Assistant Principal
~State Testing is Scheduled for April 23, 24—May 21, 29—and May 30~
The English/Language SBA will be administered April 23, 24 to all sophomores; and to juniors and seniors who have not met the graduation standard. The Math SBA will be administered on May 29, 30 to all sophomores; plus to juniors and seniors who have also not met the graduation standard. On May 21, the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science will be administered to all juniors. Testing will occur from 8am—11am with shortened 1-6 periods—students will see every teacher each day. This schedule is similar to our PSAT testing schedule. Students who are not testing will be organized into groups and will engage in some college and career activities. We are excited to offer rich experiences for our students who are not testing. Attendance on these days will be critical for all students and we ask that families work hard to eliminate excused absences on these five days. Please contact me if you have any questions about state testing—Kevin Weberg—927-3200.

DRAMA—SPRING PLAY
SOCCER
Students in Drama Club recently had the opportunity to perform the play, Complaint Department and Lemonade, by Kamron Klitgaard. Audience members were introduced to a variety of complaints...and non-complaints, in this fast-paced play that had them helplessly watching this comedy of errors and mixed messages unfold before their eyes. Coming soon, May 31—June 1: Little Women! This year, Drama Club students had the great privilege of being named the 2A WIAA State Academic Champions!(They weren’t at all dramatic about winning…..!)
ACCEPTANCE ASSEMBLY
On Friday, March 22, EVHS spent an hour building a culture of acceptance for all students— thanks to the generosity
of the Hagan Foundation Grant. This grant was written to promote a culture of awareness to the importance of
acceptance. EVHS was able to use this grant money to fund our featured guest, Davey Muise, and materials to create
an Acceptance Bench. This bench was built with the supervision of our Metal Shop teacher, Bill Close, and will be a
reminder of the importance of conversations and connections. Davey Muise related his life, which began after being
abandoned in a drawer and discovered by a fire fighter when he was seven weeks old. His story is relatable because,
despite struggles, he learned the importance of relationships and acceptance that helped him find purpose. Our lead-
ership students met with him after the assembly to learn ways to make EVHS a safe place for students and to help
students find their passion and purpose.
