On Jan. 20, a show with Eric Kearns was presented in the community center. The residents and visitors who attended were treated to a wonderful show. The show was packed and there were 161 who got to see this wonderful entertainment. The show was a tribute to stars and while Eric sang their big hits, he also performed it in their voice with special antics and facial expressions. He did a marvelous job.

He started off the show by singing “Chantilly Lace” which was a big hit for the Big Bopper. He not only sounded like him but he had all his moves. He did a fantastic job. Morningside RV Estates are a-humming.Everyone is going every which way

working and playing on activities and projects with a smile on their face.

Over the last two weeks we have had extra visitors in the park for the RV show in Tampa, an attorney seminar and lunch at our clubhouse, a chiropractor at our Monday morning meeting, and we were entertained by Rich Wilson, just to

mention a few functions. Our quilt club has been working on

making quilts for the domestic violence victims of Pasco County while the management has scheduled a health fair within the park the first week of February.

Upcoming events also include a dance featuring Pure Country Gold, Michigan Day, a blood drive, a dance featuring George Raab, and a soup contest.

This park is full of activities and special events to keep everyone busy for the snowbird season.

Rainbow Village Hosts Wedding Anniversary Celebration

On Jan. 16, Rainbow Village celebrated the 57 couples who have been married to the same spouse. Charlie and Madelyn Phinney celebrated 71 years of marriage and were one of the many guests of honor.

Harry and Macy Leonard celebrated 70 years of marriage and Don and Ilah McClintic celebrated 69 years.

Those are the three longest married couples, but there are several that celebrated more than 60 years. They are: Bob and Edwina Johnson, along with Ellis and Eva Sander at 64 years; Maynard and Aggie Gross at 63 years; Lee and Charlie Dixon at 62 years; Roger and Barb Vroom, Ted and Julie Rudnicki, and Wayne and Lorna Grassley all at 61 years; and Bernie and Jeannie Radomski at 60 years.

Ten couples celebrated 50 years and 34 couple celebrated between the 51- and 59-year brackets.

Mike Hansen and Don Metke took photos of each

couple and produced a DVD of all of the attendees’ photos for each couple to have a great memory of the day.

Lunch was served of Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, French bread and, of course, three half-sheet white cakes with vanilla mousse between the layers. The cakes were beautifully decorated. The volunteer team did an amazing job per those in attendance.

The residents of Rainbow Village enjoyed the debut of “Block Feud” on Jan. 21. Following ice cream, Joanne and Michael Hansen along with Betty McCrumb hosted a fun night as the streets in Rainbow Village competed against each other. The street teams battled to a close finish following 25 questions. Everyone had a great time, particularly the first-place finishers, Family Lane, and second-place finishers from Arch Lane.

The hall was filled with sounds of laughter following the event. Rainbow expects to see a follow up night of this as well as a trivia night.

Residents Mingle At Local Restaurants

On Jan. 9, 19 ladies came to Terra’s for a lovely lunch, some gossip and much fun. Rudi Lawson was the hostess and she picked a nice place with a good menu. One of the day’s specials was lasagna with soup or salad. Joyce told me many of the ladies went for that dish. It was not only delicious but all the food is organic.

Since it was Mary Lusher’s birthday, Rudi brought along a cupcake and a balloon along with a card signed by all

who attended. This was presented to Mary and it sure was a sweet surprise. The service was great and everyone enjoyed their day.

Several days later, on Jan. 12, 47 Grand Horizon residents met for our monthly lunch connoisseurs at Doc’s Pub & Grill for a nice lunch. The menu was quite varied and there were soups, salads and sandwiches. Some of the favorites were fish and burgers.

While waiting for our orders to arrive, we had time to visit and socialize. An employee was nice enough to go on the balcony and take a picture of the entire

group that were below. More pictures were taken and everyone seemed to have a good time. The hosts for this luncheon were Al and Sandy Lindke.

The following day, Jan. 13, approximately 40-45 people attended an “Open Mic” with gospel songs that

was put on by Freda and Paul Williams. In addition to Paul singing, a trio from Canada also performed. The name of the group was Shelly & Friends. They also presented Johnny Ellis who sang some songs. In addition to this, they had about four other singers. We have gone to the “Open Mic” previously and everyone enjoyed it and, I am sure, it was a very

good show this time as well.On Jan. 14, approximately 60 residents attended a

potluck in the community center that was hosted by Nancy Huey. According to what Nancy said, everyone had a good time and there was a wide variety of soups, sandwiches and desserts. The soups definitely hit the spot on a cool (or should I say cold) day.

banquet. Twenty-three ladies had a wonderful luncheon and had drawings for different gift cards to restaurants and clothing stores. It was a grand time.

On Jan. 19, our clubhouse was transformed into an Italian gala dinner hosted by Gayle and Phil Teri. There were a lot of helpers in the kitchen and on clean-up crew. We had three handsome waiters who passed out cheese and crackers and wine, along with an occasional song. One hundred and sixty-four meals were prepared along with some takeout for folks that could not make it. It was molto delizioso, (very delicious). This is one of our most popular dinners.

Even though the weather was not the best for outdoor sports, our bean bag group went out and played through the cold. It is always a fun thing to do and watch. Everyone seems to enjoy themselves.

Our newest sport, pickle ball, is going over very well. Lynette and Al Wheeler set up the courts for us. This is a great way to exercise, not as strenuous as tennis. They now meet two times a week.

Everything is finishing up for the park picture book. Then it goes to publication and will be out in the spring.

All our activities are in full swing, golf, bowling, crafts, shuffle board, dances, exercise group, wood carving, Christian fellowship to name a few.

Till next time.

CoMMunITY & CLuB nEWSIowa Tall Corn Club

The 61st annual Iowa Tall Corn Club meeting will be held on Feb. 11 at the Golden Corral, 6855 Gall Blvd., Zephyrhills, beginning at 8 a.m.

Any Iowans and/or former Iowans are encouraged to attend. Reservations may be placed by calling Irene Schwint at (813) 312-6174 or Karen May at (813) 780-9538. Bring new friends and greet old friends.

According to the minutes of Feb. 21, 1956, the first gathering of 52 Iowans and former Iowans met at the Woman’s Club in Zephyrhills for a covered dish supper. The group opened the meeting by singing “The Iowa Corn Song”, followed by a short business meeting. Fred Boege was elected first president, and Robert Green, as secretary and treasurer. Each person donated 25 cents and the evening was spent playing cards.

A few years later, the meetings were moved to Sunday afternoons and in 1961 the group met at the Hillsborough River State Park with attendance growing to 71. This site proved too far away and moved back to Zephyr Park in Zephyrhills and back to Saturdays. By the 10th anniversary, the largest crowd of 100 persons attended. Meeting places were changed but attendance soared to a high of 173 in 1979, with visitors coming from as far away as West Palm Beach.

In the 1980’s, Chester Cumberland became a long-time president with Mr. and Mrs. Finis Robinson as vice presidents and meetings were moved from Zephyr Park to Royal Oaks Mobile Park. By 1989, Anna Marie Robinson became president. Dues were still $1, but attendance began dropping. From 1991-1997 the Tall Corn Club moved to various places for meetings and few people attended. Pot luck dinners were continued through 1997 at the community church with sing-alongs and various musical entertainment.

An all-time low in attendance was hit in 1997 when only 15 persons attended. President Robinson suffered a stroke earlier that year and was in a nursing home. A newcomer, Karen May, was elected president, although she was not present.

Karen quickly appointed a board of directors from Hunters Run where five of the families resided, all from Iowa. Leo and Marilyn McMullin were strong supporters and promoters of the club and handed out flyers before the annual meeting to anyone with Iowa license plates at grocery stores, parking lots or gatherings. Irene Schwint retired to Hunters Run about that time and became the backbone for finding a place to meet, entertainment, having posters made and publicity. That next year attendance rose to 46.

In the following years, there were dinners and entertainment at various restaurants until the price becme prohibitive and attendance started dropping again. The last dinner found attendees dipping into their pockets to meet the guaranteed 40 person/$10 per plate quota.

In 2008, members decided to try a morning coffee. Since then attendance has grown to between 50 and 60 Iowans who enjoy the annual outing, now held regularly on the second Saturday morning of February. Attendees bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope to ease registration. Letters are sent out to anyone attending meetings in the last three years. There are no formal dues or forms to submit, just a short meeting of introductions, prizes, and fellowship.

voice which sounded like Ray Charles and there was also some audience participation as Eric walked amongst the audience.

If you closed your eyes, you can just imagine the original performers.

He did a fine job on a Johnny Mathis song called “Chances Are” and he did a perfect job on a Chubby Checker song called “The Twist”. He also danced the twist with someone from the audience; I am telling you that he was terrific. He did a wonderful rendition of “Release Me” by Engelbert Humperdinck and also “Twistin’ The Night Away” by Sam Cooke.

After going through the audience and presenting a rose to a woman, he performed some country tunes such as “Gentle on my Mind” by Glen Campbell, “Ring of Fire” by

Johnny Cash and more.He then performed a masterful job of “Woman,

Woman” by Gary Puckett & the Union Gap. Of course, no show would be complete without Elvis

and he did several songs like “Suspicious Minds” and more with all the facial expressions and his eyes being closed on parts of the songs. He also treated us to a very cute story about Elvis that touched all of us.

He performed the song, “Bye, Bye Miss American Pie” by Don McLean and did a great job of it. At one point in the show, he did the song entitled “Me & Mrs. Jones” where he walked out to the audience and sang it to a Mrs. Jones. That was a cute moment.

“Copacabana”, originally performed by Barry Manilow, was done and it was lovely. The show was real good where he also sang a medley of four songs by Neil Diamond. When he performed “Sweet Caroline” the audience sang the appropriate parts in different places. He also performed Rod Stewart songs along with Willie Nelson

and Julio Iglesias and “The Gambler” which is a Kenny Rogers song but he did it so well with the gravelly voice and all.

Also, he performed a medley from the Rat Pack. When he did the “Candy Man” which was a Sammy Davis Jr. hit, the

facial expressions were superb. There was a cute part in the show where

he brought up front Barb Livingston as it was her birthday in a few days. Everyone joined in on the song, “Happy Birthday”. He then proceeded with another medley of the Beatles and also Tom Jones. There were several other songs such as Al Jolson

and Hank Williams along with “Shaving Cream” by Benny Bell that he performed but when he did Jimmy Durante, it was terrific. He did a fabulous job at “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. His eyes were closed during parts and his voice was so low that it sounded just like Louis Armstrong.

The show was closed out with Eric singing “God Bless the U.S.A.” which is a Lee Greenwood song. This song he did in his own voice. Everyone went home knowing they saw a great show. Our thanks go out to Gary Wilcox and Ed Goldstein who planned this event and records were broken at Grand Horizon.
