All these events require a great deal of planning and preparation and the staff involved are to be congratulated on the time and effort they have put into these events. Coming up next we will also have our Year 13 Leavers Dinner. This is a time when we formally thank our Year 13 students for the contribution they have made to our school. This year’s group has been a particularly large one and they have done much to set the positive tone that has been apparent in the school this year. Over the holiday weekend it certainly was a busy time within East Otago, what with the 150 th Reunion of schooling in the Palmerston District, Kelly’s Canter and the “State of Origin” games of rugby and netball held between Palmerston and Waikouaiti. Having spent some time at the reunion it was clearly apparent many have fond memories both of their schooling and the East Otago area itself. It certainly was good to see the whole area so busy with people taking advantage of the long holiday weekend. Coming up for our Year 9/10 students are the end of year examinations which will be held on Monday 7 th and Tuesday 8 th November. They will provide a clear guide as to student progress and may well be used to help determine classes for 2017. For the first time we are offering additional tuition sessions in the lead up to these examinations. These sessions should serve to reinforce to our Year 9/10 students just how important these examinations are. Our senior students now have only about one week left of classroom lessons. All should be focussed on completing all internal standards they have available to them plus be gearing up to sit the NCEA external examinations which start on the 9 th of November. Students should also be taking full advantage of the extra tuition sessions that are available. It is also important parents/ caregivers attend, the three way interviews being held this week, if possible. Times for these were sent out with the end of year reports last week. All these things are designed to ensure that everyone is aware of what progress has been made towards the successful completion of the various levels of NCEA as well as to identify what can be done in the remaining weeks. As this is the last newsletter before our senior students go on study leave I do want to wish them all the best as they prepare for what is a challenging few weeks ahead. I urge you all to study hard and prepare well as time spent now on additional study will definitely improve your chances of success. 28th October 2016 Our Values are based on the acrostic - ’RELATIONSHIPS’ where R = Respect towards self & others, E = Empathy for others, L = Loyalty to family, friends and school, A = Acceptance of those around you, T = Tolerance of other opinions, actions & differences, I = Integrity towards all aspects of life, O = Ownership of actions and change, N = Nurturing skills, talents and attributes, S = Sensitivity of any situation, H = Honesty in thought, word & deed, I = Inclusiveness of all, regardless of age, ethnicity or characteristics, P = Patience with and to those around you, S = Support for fellow students, family & teachers S

Proud to be part of the Eastern Community

Principal’s Comment Kia ora, greetings to all parents, caregivers and friends of the school

The final term of any school year is always an incredibly busy one. Already we have had our Sports photographs, our Careers Open Night, our Sports Awards Assembly and the Community Quiz Evening. All these events require

a great deal of planning and preparation and the staff involved are to be congratulated on the time and effort they have put into these events.

Coming up next we will also have our Year 13 Leavers Dinner. This is a time when we formally thank our Year 13 students for the contribution they have made to our school. This year’s group has been a particularly large one and

they have done much to set the positive tone that has been apparent in the school this year.

Over the holiday weekend it certainly was a busy time within East Otago, what with the 150th

Reunion of schooling in the Palmerston District, Kelly’s Canter and the “State of Origin” games of rugby and netball held between Palmerston and Waikouaiti. Having spent some time at the reunion

it was clearly apparent many have fond memories both of their schooling and the East Otago area itself. It certainly was good to see the whole area so busy with people taking advantage of the long holiday weekend.

Coming up for our Year 9/10 students are the end of year examinations which will be held on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th November. They will provide a clear guide as to student progress and

may well be used to help determine classes for 2017. For the first time we are offering additional tuition sessions in the lead up to these examinations. These sessions should serve to reinforce to

our Year 9/10 students just how important these examinations are.

Our senior students now have only about one week left of classroom lessons. All should be

focussed on completing all internal standards they have available to them plus be gearing up to sit the NCEA external examinations which start on the 9th of November. Students should also be taking full advantage of the extra tuition sessions that are available. It is also important parents/

caregivers attend, the three way interviews being held this week, if possible. Times for these were sent out with the end of year reports last week. All these things are designed to ensure that

everyone is aware of what progress has been made towards the successful completion of the various levels of NCEA as well as to identify what can be done in the remaining weeks.

As this is the last newsletter before our senior students go on study leave I do want to wish them

all the best as they prepare for what is a challenging few weeks ahead. I urge you all to study hard

and prepare well as time spent now on additional study will definitely improve your chances of

success.

Senior Students’ NCEA Tutorials

Students preparing for their external NCEA examinations have the opportunity of extra assistance through tutorials during lunchtime, after school and in the evening. These tutorials will be staffed by the students’ regular subject teachers and heads of department. All senior students are encouraged to make the most of this additional support. Parents and caregivers can support their children as they prepare for these important examinations by encouraging them to attend as many of these tutorials as they possibly can. There are only 4 weeks until the examinations begin!

Useful information for parents and students

There are some useful links on our school website for students and parents alike. To view and follow these links please go to http://eohs.school.nz/ and on the home page you will find the information under EOHS latest news. These are very useful Apps for their mobile devices which will help with understanding NCEA for both students and parents and credit tracking for students. All the Apps are free and available for both Apple and Android devices.

We have some parents looking for second hand uniform items. Should you have anything in the cupboard you may like sold, please bring to the school office and we are happy to sell on behalf for you.

150th Palmerston Districts School Reunion

Many have asked the significance of the bell now situated as you enter the East Otago High School grounds. This was the very first school bell on the school grounds, as been kindly restored by the Reunion Committee to commemorate the 150th Palmerston District School Reunion.

The library is looking at renewing magazine subscriptions for next year. We would also like to hear from anyone who would like to donate their magazines to the school library. Magazines dated from 2016 would be most welcome. Please contact the school librarian, Liz Wootton, or email [email protected]. Thank you Reminder to all students, especially those who are about to go on study leave, please return your library books. Look under your beds, behind the sofa, in your bags and lockers! Return, re-issue or choose some great new reads for your summer reading once exams are over.

We would like to thank the following families who have supported East Otago High School through the South Fuels - Fuel for Schools promotion. Each time they purchase fuel, a contribution towards the donation that can be received once $1,000 is earned.

If you would like further information on how to join please phone: 0800 484 3543

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Nicole McLeod who has been selected to attend the Rotary National Science Forum 2017 held in Auckland. This is a 12 day programme run for OUTSTANDING all round science, maths and technology students in Year 12 to attend. Students are interviewed by their local Rotary Club, who then provide information to the District Coordinator. The District 9980 for the Lower South Island area incorporates Ashburton to Invercargill and across to Queenstown. This is an amazing opportunity, with one other student in the area being selected, we wish Nicole all the best.
