We would like to welcome everyone to the 2016-2017 school year. We are quickly “getting settled” into
what we are sure will be a successful year. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the
school or e-mail one of the principals directly.

Emergency Procedures
Your child’s safety is of utmost importance for the Sioux City
Community School District. During the year, our school has fire,
tornado, and intruder drills. The drills ensure our students and
staff are prepared for potential emergencies.
Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through
our Blackboard phone system. The system calls every phone
number associated with your child in order to reach you.
In the event of a school lockdown, access in or out of the school is
not permitted by anyone. Students will not be released to parents
until the school is secure.
In the event of a school evacuation, you will not be able to pick up
your child at the school. You must report to the evacuation site.
The Blackboard phone system will inform you of the evacuation
site and any other pertinent information.
If you have any questions, please call the school office at
274-4030.
Traffic Concerns
Student Dismissal at End of Day
This year, we are asking students to dismiss out certain
doors at the end of the day.
6th Grade is dismissed out of the main South front
doors.
7th Grade is dismissed out of the lower West doors.
8th Grade is dismissed out the upper main West
doors.
This may make a difference on where you plan to pick your child up in the afternoons. It is important that our traffic flow goes well. You must enter the main parking lot from Lorraine Ave. and exit the parking
lot onto South Olive.
Please do not try to exit the lot from the Lorraine Entrance. It is also very important that you not drop off or park along S. Olive near the school. These spots are marked as NO PARKING. Please abide by this. We need to have the streets clear to get the busses and cars
moving smoothly.
Once students have been dismissed at the end of the day, it is our expectation that students be picked up no later than 2:00 p.m. on Monday’s and 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday- Thursday’s. There is no supervision past that time. We do not want any student in an unsafe
situation.

Attendance
Regular school attendance is one of the most important factors
in the success of middle school students. Students are
required to be in attendance unless they are sick or in cases of
extreme emergency. If your student will not be in school, we
ask that you let us know by calling the school at 274-4030.
This number will be answered 24 hours a day. Please call the
office before 9:00 a.m. each day. This will assist us in keeping
accurate attendance records and help ensure the safety of
your child.
Requests for Homework
You are encouraged to request homework for your
student when they are absent for two or more days from
school. This request may be made on the answering
machine or to the office staff at 274-4030. Homework
requests must be made prior to 9:00 a.m. on the second
day to assure enough time for teachers to prepare
the work. Assignments may be picked up in the main
office after 2:45 p.m. and before 3:45 p.m. on the day
that you request it.
Expectations at East High School Activities
—Every student will receive a Raiders Together t-shirt. If your student
wears the Raiders Together t-shirt to an EHS activity, they will get into
the event free with a paid adult. We strongly encourage adult
supervision.
—Use the concessions and restrooms on East High’s side of Olsen
Stadium.
—Stay in your seats and do not walk around the field or stand down
below the bleachers. Please do not climb or roll down the hills.
—Do not play catch or football in the end zones or anywhere else at
Olsen Stadium.
—Stay out of the locker rooms of the west end of the stadium.
—Football games - Middle school students sit on the west end of the
bleachers beside the high school students.
—Volleyball matches and basketball games - Stay seated in the gym. You
are not to be in the hallways or playing in the commons. You are not to
be in the locker rooms at any time.
—Sportsmanship is important! Cheer for East High School and do not
School Meal Requirements
Just a reminder on how students are charged for hot lunch items in the Sioux City School System. Due to new nutritional
guidelines, student MUST take a vegetable or fruit as part of their main meal. If students do not take a fruit or vegetable they
are not charged for a school lunch but rather charged for each food item individually which many times costs more than buying
a full school lunch. Please encourage your student to take a full meal when going through the line. It helps your student
nutritionally, and also helps keep cost down for you as a parent.
Increasing the amount of fruits
Reducing the sodium in the meals over the next 10 years
Setting the calorie limits for the first time
Increasing the whole grains
Limiting the amount of meat/meat alternatives and grains
Please visit the district Website at www.siouxcityschools.org for addition information.
Breakfast and Lunch Prices
this year are:
Breakfast Regular price $1.80
Reduced price $ .30
Lunch Regular price $2.85
Reduced price $ .40
Homework Help/Detentions After School
Students who receive a detention will remain in detention until 4:00, they may have a parent pick them up from school, arranged to walk home, or
they may ride the 4:15 p.m. bus. Students staying for homework help will remain with the assigned staff member until a parent comes to get them, they walk home, or they ride the 4:15 bus. The 4:15 p.m. bus will transport students to various
locations including the Eastside Elementary schools. If you have any questions, please contact
the office at 274-4030.

Box Tops
Box Tops for Education is still an ongoing
fundraiser for the EMS Library. Please
continue to cut out your Box Tops and send
them to school with your child. If your son or
daughter has a library fine, they are able to
pay the fine with box tops! What a great way
to help support the school and keep kids
responsible for paying their fines. Our first
submission is 11/1 so please make sure you get
them in as soon as possible!
Hy-Vee Receipts
Save your Hy-Vee Receipts for School Bucks.
Receipts must be dated August 2016-2017.
Grocery and catering receipts can be included,
but gasoline receipts do not count. We will re-
ceive $1.00 for every $100 worth of receipts.
Receipts can be put in the Hy-Vee box in the
main office.
Spartan Scoop
The Counseling Department has been welcoming our Spartans back to a new school year at
EMS. At East Middle School, there are three Professional School Counselors. Counselors are
able to help students transition through the various grade levels as well as build
relationships with students and their families. Counselors meet with the teams regularly to
strategize for student success. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s counselor
with questions or concerns.

Be There!
Being in school all day, every day, helps your child get the most out of middle school. Encourage good
attendance with these ideas:
-Point out that there is no substitute for being in class. Your child needs to be present to hear
teachers explain concepts, to participate in group projects and class discussions and to ask
questions.
-Schedule doctor, dentist and orthodontist appointments for before or after school hours whenever
possible. If you are unable to do this, try to arrange them at your child’s lunchtime.
-It will be easier for your child to get up on time for school if they have had at least nine hours of
sleep. Set a reasonable bedtime, and make sure they put away electronic devices so they aren’t
tempted to stay awake to read message or play games.

Medication at School
The district’s medication policy can also be viewed on the district website at www.siouxcityschools.org When possible, it is suggested that
medication be given at home. If it is necessary for your child to take medication at school, the following important points need to
be remembered.

over-the-counter medications such as cough drops and pain relievers.
2. Medication must be in the original labeled container, i.e. prescription bottle or manufacturer’s container. No medication will be
accepted that is sent to school in an envelope or baggy.
3. Medication that requires refrigeration cannot be given at school.
4. Medication requiring written permission from both the parent/guardian and the physician are:
a. Medications that will be given every day all school year.
b. Medications that will be given longer than two weeks.
c. Medications that will be kept at school all year.
5. You are encouraged to administer medication prescribed three times a day at home. The first dose may be given before school, second
dose after school and the third dose at bedtime. Medication permission forms are available in the school office. The parent /guardian is
responsible to take the medication form to the doctor. The complete medication form must be returned to school within two weeks from the
