Standards for Mathematical Practice K- 4

Description: The CCSS represent a significant shift in the teaching of mathematics. The CCSS focus on higher-order thinking skills that teachers must continuously address in their instruction. The Standards for Mathematical Practice are the vehicle meant to drive this change to deep understanding in addition to mathematical proficiency.

Learner Outcomes: Participants will learn to apply instructional strategies that support the

mathematical practices and how to connect the practices with mathematical content standards. By understanding the eight practices and integrating them into the classroom, teachers will find multiple opportunities to increase student engagement and differentiate instruction to better meet the needs of all students.

1. Duration: whole group presentation and activity (45 minutes), break-out sessions (30 minutes), PLC teams will work collaboratively to implement the mathematical practices and differentiate instruction (2 hours), summary and evaluation of learning (15 minutes) Total time: 3.5 hours (TBD)

2. Alignment with district wide or school goals: To ensure an engaging and challenging program for all students by fully implementing the CCSS for Mathematics.

3. Follow-up: PLC teams will continue to focus on the mathematical practices to improve instruction and integrate higher order thinking skills within the mathematics classrooms throughout the year.
