The club al o en joyed a Christma party, Fete de Noel a Ia Fran~aise, the Mardi Gras, and a French dinner with food prepared by the members. MELODY T MAY Queen Kathy Moore reigned at the
1962 May Queen Dance sponsored by Friendship Club. The theme of the dance, "Melody in May," was carried out by the u e of floraJ mu ical notes decorating the lounge .
The dance was the perfect climax to an extremely busy week. Campaigning tarted immediately after the announce
ment of the candidates, with the committees meeting nightly to prepare for the assembly on the forthcoming Thur day. At that time the committees presented a humorous skit, which led to the presentation of their candidate for Queen on a beautifully decorated float. The other princesses were: Mary Daniels, Chris Dreifort, Joyce Johnson, Sandy Kormos, and Sue Skinner.

With it "getting to know you" approach, Shaw High School has captured the spirit of the American Field Service program. In this way our school is doing a distinct service toward international understanding and good will.
Bruce Scharschmidt lived with a Swiss family in Lausanne a Shaw' repre entative for the 1963 AFS ummer program. Unlike the majority of AFS student ,
he had the advantage of con iderable travel in Europe with his Swis parents who took him for a three-week tay to As endelft in Holland, near the orth Sea.
Bruce ays he, as well as his fellow AFS'ers, has found that people around the globe are ba ically the ame and that it is the little differences that make the bigge t impre ions.
Per onable Faruk Seyrek of Turkey i thi year's AFS foreign exchange tudent. In I tanbul he attend Roberts College, which i an American Boarding School with American teachers. His Ea t Oeveland home is with the Max Griffith family. It has been Faruk's lifelong dream to spend a year in an American chool a a repre entative of the youth of Turkey.
Shaw High chool also is host to Ulrich Bingel, who is pon ored by Epworth Euclid Methodi t Church and is an International Christian Youth Exchange Program student. Ulrich studies at Kant Gymna ium in Spandau (West Berlin), where he will return after hi year with us. He earned his varsity Jetter in cross country and enjoy playing the guitar. The idea of changing cla ses for each ubject and thereby being able to enlarge hi circle of friend appeals to him. Ulrich live with the Shelton family.

The stage crew, under the guidance of Mr. Durkin, i invaluable in helping Shaw's assemblies and stage productions to run smoothly. Most students don't see the stage crew in action except when someone adju t a microphone or muvl.:~ the speaker's stand a little to the right. This is only a fraction of their job. Their other responsibilities incluue lighting, curtain-pulling, and wift set change , which add up to ucce ful staging.

"This erne ter's Council will be remembered for some time to come." These words emphasize the feeling of most of Shaw's personnel concerning the spring semester of Student Council. This Council went above and beyond those of the past few year . By directly informing and bowing the entire student body and faculty the purpo e of Student Council and how they can benefit from it, much interest and enthusiasm was aroused. Thi semester's Council also provided a chance fur more of the student body to take an active part in its work. Improvement in all phase of student government was part of the challenging program taken on. Preparation for the addition of a ninth grade and an increase in student population to over 2,000 was uppermost in the minds of the officers and the new advisor, Mr . J uergen . A start toward closer school-community relation and teaching students more efficient and responsible elf-government, along with the addition of a va tly improved and table con titution, were part of the things accomplished thi
semester. Under some of the best leadership in years, the Council
found time to revise the tudent handbook, tend to the allschool party, handle Council and May Queen elections, and sponsor a car wash.
Our hat are off to one of the best Councils and ·ets of officers that we have een in a long time. We know that following Student Councils will really have to work to keep up with the fine example shown us this seme ter.
This darling little boy is also a part of Shaw's Student Council. Jin Shik i Student Council's eight-year-old foster child from Korea. The monthly exchange of letters with him has been a spot of joy in the Council for the three years that they have
1 supported him. (They also send extra reminders of their care with birthday and Christma presents.)

MIXED CHORUS
Shaw's Mixed Choru i an important part of the vocal department here, for they are a "training group." The arne vocal technique practiced in Choir are stressed in the Mixed Chorus, because the future members of Shaw's advanced Choir are chosen from this group.
The performance of this group are not as exten ive a that of the large Choir, for they participate only at the Chri tma Program and the Spring Concert; however, they till derive much pleasure from their performances.

with their mooth and lively performances for many years. In 1953 the mu ic director of Shaw High School originated this novel group; ince then, many other chool have become interested and have
duplicated thi organization. Each pring ixteen inger and ixteen in trumentalists evolve
triumphant after competing with hundred for the few coveted member hips . The final thirty-two performers are tho e who prove to be the most vivaciou , the mo t intere ted, and the most musically talented for modern stage presentations. This extra-curricular group schedules rehear als throughout the ummer and continues one night a week during the school year.
The mu ic performed sati fies the students ' desire to accomplish something in the tyle of that een on T.V., the Broadway stage, or radio and include number from recent and popular hits to old favorites to the complicated rhythms of today's dance.
There i never more than a one-third holdover in the personnel from year to year, yet the Shaw Rhythm-Teens have maintained a con istently high tandard of performance. Thi year, under the direction of S. Robert Fra er and Ruth Hone , the Rhythm-Teens are again fulfilling a very bu y chedule of performances.

Visci set to take the Cardinals all the way.
Fischer decapacitate paper hoop on his only carry of year.
"Champ we'll be in '63!" What a perfect slogan that proved to be, as the Shaw High Cardinals, under head coach Don Drebus, won the undisputed Lake Erie League crown with a record of six victories and one lonely loss in league competition. A consistently fine team effort plu typical Shaw spirit on the part of both players and students showed that size is the only department in which our school is last in the L.E.L. It wa an exceptionally memorable season for the Cardinals, rated one of the five be t high school teams in the Greater Cleveland area.
The Cardinals made their early tart a succe sful one by trouncing a stubborn John Adams eleven, 28 to 22, on September 6 at Shaw Stadium. Shaw rolled up 344 yards on the ground, most of that figure belonging to two sea on-long tandouts, tailback Mike Malec and ophomore fullback Mel Carter. The TO's came on a
20-yard dash by quarter Joe Chernay, runs of 29 and 28 yards by Carter, and a 12-yard bolt by Charles Wheeler.
On the following Saturday, Shaw vi ited Berea Midpark for another independent tilt. The Meteors, fielding their first var ity football team, pulled off a 14-12 upset with the aid of Shaw fumbles and penalties. Midpark twice capitalized on Cardinal bobbles to score. Shaw drove for two econd-half touchdowns on fiveyard runs by arter and Malec, but was unable to make any of the crucial extra points, the final attempt falling inches short.
Co-captains Elmer Novak (left) and Dennis Vaughn were mainstays on Shaw line.

Malec lug the leather against Collinwood, taking a kickoff up the middle ...
. . . and printing for the ideline following a later punt.
This frustrating defeat wa followed by a thrilling 6-6 deadlock with ancient rival Collinwood before the usual overflow crowd at the home grounds. The Birds cored the first time they got the ball, starting to move
with a 45-yard aerial to winger Pete Wolfgram from Pat Visci, who took over the driver's seat for good with this game. Two plays later Pat completed another to end Joe Jenkin for the TD. The Railroaders counted on a 37-yard pass play early in the second quarter, ending the scoring but not the excitement. The last play of the third period saw Robin Caputo take a Visci throw 37 yard . The drive reached the Collinwood five in the final quarter, but the massive defensive line held Shaw on downs. The Cardinals got the ball back and were again knocking on the goal line after two long run when time ran out.
A capacity throng at the Stadium tayed 'til the final gun for Shaw's hair-rai ·ing league opener, a 20-18 squeaker over tough Bru h. Carter and Malec scored to give Shaw a 14-12 halftime edge, but the Arcs' thirdquarter touchdown put •hem in front 18 to 14. With lcs than five minutes left in the game, the Cardinals took over on their own 26. A fourth-down pass from Vi ci to Caputo for 26 yards and a 13-yard toss to Jeff Schultz helped Shaw drive to the one, where Carter cored with second left.
The Cards next took a 3 3-18 Homecoming verdict from Shaker, building a 26-0 lead. Malec ran 54 yard for a TO and !>Cun:Li un a Liazzling 85-yard kickofi return a Shaw breezed pa t the Raiders.

Malec continued to sparkle the following week in the crucial 14-8 win over Euclid. He rambled 85 yards untouched with a Panther punt and ran four yards to core both Shaw touchdown . Tht: real honors, however, went to the defen e. After a blocked punt, they held Euclid on down deep in Shaw territory with econds to play. This victory put Shaw on top in the L.E.L.
The Cardinal returned to the Stadium to make high-ranked Valley Forge their fourth straight victim, 24-6. The fir ttring defen e held the Patriots scoreless,
while Shaw' four tallie included short runs by Visci and Carter and scoring passes from the diminutive ignal-caller to Fred Klaass and Jenkins. Pat, who re
ceived PresStar recognition for his fine play, wowed the crowd with a 65-yard punt after chasing a soaring pas from center into his own end zone.
ext on the chedule wa the all-important howdown \ ith the defending league champ, Lakewood. In one of the clo c t and harde t-fought conte t of the ea on, the rugged Ranger tied Shaw for the L.E.L.
lead with a 20-16 victory. The Cardinals counted on runs by Vi ci and Wheeler. Lakewood fought off Shaw twice late in the fourth period to pull out the win.

Visci nears collision following first down run around end.
So the Cardinals moved into the final game of the season on November 8 tied with Lakewood for the league lead. Heights was scheduled to vi . it Shaw. A victory over Heights plu a win by Euclid over Lakewood would bring Shaw the crown. The Birds fulfilled their end of the bargain with a 26-8 conquest, scoring on runs by Malec, Wheeler, and Carter and a pass from Visci to Jenkins, who simply outran the Tigers' secondary on a 77-yard play. With time running out on the scoreboard clock, everyone tensely awaited news of the Euclid-Lakewood game. Would the Cardinals once more be only co-champ , as in the two previous years? At last the announcement came: "It's all over but the shouting! Let' have a cheer for our L.E.L. champ !" Euclid had come through, and Shaw High was all alone on top of the world.
Recognition i due to all who helped make it a banner year for Shaw football. Three players were all-league choices: little quarterback Pat Visci, who guided the attack nearly all season; end Fred Klaass, sure-handed receiver; and linebacker Pete Davet, a deadly and consistent tackler. Although singling out individuals isn't easy, praise must go to several others. Mel Carter averaged 4.6 yards a carry and led in scoring with 54 points; Mike Malec averaged 4.2 and scored 42 points; Charlie Wheeler picked up 5.7 yards a crack. Joe Jenkins snagged 17 passes and Robin Caputo 15. The work of boys like Denny Vaughn, Elmer Novak, Mal Albritton, Joe Chernay, and Pete Wolfgram was indi pensable. Congratulations to players, coaches, and students for an unforgettable year!

THANKS FOR A BIG ASSIST, EUCLID!
Shaw came back for a 6-0 "must" victory at Parma in a veritable sea of mud and a steady rain. The Cardinal counted in the first quarter on a 38-yard print by Carter. The Redmen's only threat was turned back with time running out in the fourth period when Malec intercepted a wayward Parma pass deep in hi own territory. The Cardinal defense, led by Pre Star Denny Vaughn, was impenetrable, holding Parma to only 113 yards in total offense.
A Panther ha Malec as official comes to a screeching halt.
Hail the coming of the champs!

SEASON RECORD ball squad posed a strong threat to any opponent. Its record of two victories five defeat , and a tie is a deceiving one. In no game were Shaw's sophs badly outplayed or routed, and several los e came as a result of bad breaks. For example, the Cardinals dropped a heartbreaking 6-0 deci ion to league champion Cleveland Height when the Tigers pounced on an untimely fumble in the Shaw end zone. Even in the seemingly lop ided lo s to Shaker, Shaw kept the pace until the final minutes of the first half, when the Red Raiders converted a couple of interceptions into two quick touchdowns. They scored another in the arne way just after the start of the second half to put the game out of

Our cross-country squad provided stiff opposition for nearly every opponent, in spite of winning only one meet. The scoring system awards one point for a runner finishing first, two for a second-place finish, and so on. The team score is the sum of the scores of its first five finishers, so the team with the lowest total wins. You can see that one or two late fini~hers in its top five can raise a team's score considerably, and that a final score with ten or twelve points difference is much clo er than it looks.
One of the season's high spots was the performance of junior Chuck Coiner, running cross-country for the first time. Chuck cracked the record for Brush's cour e with a 10:36 over the two-mile grind. His be t time on Shaw's Forest Hill route, by far the Lake Erie League' toughe t, wa an 11:03, threatening Jerry Harbak's rl!cord for the cour e. The Shaw tandard i Harbak' 10:19 clocking at the 1961 state meet. It isn't fair, however, to compare times made on different course , since the only requirement is that the course be two miles long and there is wide variation. Chuck also took thirteenth place in the District meet.
Another tandout was senior Bob Denning, who matched Coiner's time on the home course and finished fifteenth in L.E.L. competition. Also lettering were Ulrich Bingel, Gary Speidel, Jim Dunn, soph Kirk Warner, and Jim Wardell , the last three of which will return with Coiner next year. Pro pects look bright for coach Stall mith's squad, which will retain ten of its top thirteen runner .

The speedy and hot-shooting Cardinals got off to a halting start in their drive for their 12th L.E.L. title in 37 recorded year , dropping a tense opener at Euclid, 56-53 . But they got on the winning track with 42 free throws, including 14 straight by Jim Wardell, to crush rival Collinwo d, 96-68 .
Lefty Bill Howell's 27 points paced Shaw to an important 73-63 first L.E.L. win over tough Valley Forge. An easy conquest of Brush, a hard-fought victory over Parma, and a surpri ingly resounding romp over Shaker then lifted the Birds to fir t place and got them into high gear. Shaw added a comeback win over Height for six traight .

The Cards hit a snag the following week, luckily in an independent game, a 76-71 loss to tall Boardman. They bounced back with a handy triumph over Lincoln. Then , in one of the sea on' high spot<;, Ed Hrumfield's eight Ia t-quarter point helped lift haw to a 7-53 victory at Lakewood.
Howe]] continued to lead th coring in the Parma win and the squeaker over Euclid. The ordinal needed twenty first-half points by Brumfield again t
Valley Forge and a record 25 rebound~ by Drew Byers again t Brush to keep the victories coming. Strong comebacks against Shaker, U.S., and Heights ga e Shaw 15 of its Ia t 16 games and set the tage for the L.E.L. finale with Lakewood invading. 1\ frantic foul-hooting conte t wound up in a narrow 65-62 defeat
and a tie for the title.
Fifth Out of 103
Standout performance by Pat Vi ci, Bob Turner, and Brumfield kept Shaw in the Euclid sectional tournament with victorie over Mayfield and WicklifTe until the Birds ran up again t a hustling and hot-hitting St. Jo eph team. The core wa tied as late as the middle of the third quarter, but St. Joe rallied to take it, 66-58.
Thi wa one of Shaw's greate t teams in recent years-it tied the 1940 quad's standard of 17 victories and hit a new offensive peak of 70.3 point per game. It had a consi tently balanced attack with four or five players always in double figures, and howed great ability to bounce back. The Cardinals earned a final rating of fifth in the Greater Cleveland area, comprising some I 03 school . They were al o the first Shaw five to reach the finals of the sectional tourney since 1950.

Top-notch performance wa alma t commonplace. Howell hattercd the old ea on scoring mark with 322, 15.6 per game. Byer , 6'8" center, set a new rebound tandard with 268, an average of 12.8 per conte t.
Brumfield, only a junior pulled down 249 rebound and was third in scoring. Vi ci 5'6" junior guard, was dependable scoring help for Howell and compiled the second highest number of a ists in school hi tory. Wardell, who will also return next year, hawed he can do the job in coring and under the boards. Jim Mari-on was the team' top defensive player and could get

Coach Roger Schnake's junior varsity cagers, showing fine poise for an all-sophomore team, ran up one of the best J.V. records within memory, 15 victories against two losses. Dropping only two-point games to Valley Forge and Parma, they compiled the L.E.L. 's top ledger at 12-2.
It was the sophs' great come-from-behind ability which kept them in the winning column. They rallied from a fir t-half deficit to win ix times in all. Probably the mo t memorable of these comebacks came in the second Shaker game, when Shaw trailed by 18 entering the second half, but et the stage for victory by burying the Raiders, 24-6, in the third period.
Tops in scoring were backcourt men Clayton Burroughs and Van Tyus. Burroughs kept the Cardinals in many a contest with his long jumpers, while Tyu showed both outside accuracy and elusiveness inside the key on drives. Although only 5'11", Ed "Bobcat" William wa the leading rebounder by a wide margin and hit on 42% of his shots. Dick Fraser demonstrated real potential as a good man on the boards, and Karl Schultz developed a fine eye from the outside.

Shaw's wrestlers made a di appointing showing last winter, managing only two victories in a rugged schedule. Balance was generally lacking, but Bill Dearth, Berry Billington, Bob Petche, and Mel Carter turned in consistent work. One of the Cardinal ' be t efforts wa the loss to powerful Willoughby South.
Plans for next year call for building and improvement. The fir t full crop from Kirk will produce a team primarily made up of sophomores and juniors. Lightweights will be especially strong, and three of the firstyear men went undefeated in junior high. Coach Kres al o i counting on Tom lzzo, Jim Jones, and Carter to develop into top performer .

Despite a deceiving 4-10 record, Shaw's swimmers had to be rated the be t in the chool's hi tory. The Cardinals lo t many very clo e meets and had more than their share of bad break in an extremely rugged chedule. In the proce , however, they erased eight of
the ten major Shaw record . To how how narrow most of the defeats were, the scoring y tern awards points on a 5-3-1 basis in individual events, but gives seven to the team winning a relay and none to the loser. Thus a defeat by a much as 13 point could have been turned into victory had Shaw taken a relay they lost, often by tenths of a second.
Shaw fini hed fourth in what i probably Ohio's toughest league, third in its top di trict, and 13th in a 60-team field advancing to Columbus. For the first time in their eleven-year history, the Euclid Relays went to the Shaw tanker .
Junior Bob Webster, the quad' high scorer and an AJJ-Di trict selection, set a school standard in the 200-yard free tyle and an LEL mark in winning the 100-yard butterfly in the league meet. This year's Athletic Council, under the direction of Mrs. Caroline Larsen, is led by Belva Blankschaen, Pre ident; Mary Ann DiGiamcomantonio, Vice-President; Marilyn Graham, Secretary; and Beth Taylor, Treasurer.
Participation in this organization is a rewarding and satisfying experience for any member of the Girls Athletic A sociation at Shaw High School, and every girl who is intere ted in becoming a member of A.C. is urged to fill out an application.
G. A.A. RALLY
Each September the member of the Girl ' Athletic Council prepare and pre-ent a "G.A.A. rally" to timulate the
intere t of pro pective G.A.A. members. Several skits are given by the girls in charge of each sport and their a istants. The e skit are centered around one main theme, uch as a " ircus" pre ented in September of 1963. Only the girls of Shaw attend this rally, and almost all of them seem to enjoy the humorous skits. With the enthusia m and interest that this rally promote , the G.A.A. drive is always a great uccess.

VARSITY UNDERSTUDIES
MARTHA TROMBLEY
.Each year two understudies for Varsity Cheerleaders are chosen. This year the pert and peppy gals are Martha Schweizer, and Martha Trombley. These enthusiastic girls help to prepare skits, participate in the rallies, and fill in for a regular cheerleader at a moments notice. Being an understudy is really a great opportunity for these girls; for they gain the knowledge and experience needed for a position on the regular squad.

Cheerleaders
The '63-'64 Var ity Cheerleader have proven to be one of Shaw's peppiest quad . The e ix enthu ia tic girl never lose their spirit. Kathy Mu k, Nancy Ro ser. Mary Ellen Serota, Nancy Wellman, and Co-Captain Ellen Shrader (basketball) , and Lauren Yisci (football), were cho en on the ba i of jump , motions, pep, and personality. Rigorou practice sc ion followed the May elections, and the ummer months were pent improving routine . In the fall their
effort were rewarded by the privilege of cheering the Shaw Cardinals to an L.E.L. champion hip .

ARMY- NAVY The highlight of the girl ' sports eason is the Army- avy ba ketball game. Thi
year was no exception, as the avy Varsity crushed the Army team by a core of 32-21 in a thrilling exhibition of the girls' athletic ability. Although many were witne to the fine playing of members of both teams, few people actually know of all the erTort which i put into the preparations for the big cia h. Be ide practicing hard every night for two week before the contest, the girls themselve , under the capable direction of the manager they choose, must make poster and floaters, prepare a skit for the rally, and sell tickets. But it is all worth it, since the big night i filled with excitement, fun , and a sense of accompli hment. The J.V. girl and the cheerleader , also, mu t work hard to prepare for the game. Much credit mu t be given to Mrs. Larsen for her a i tance to both teams.
Thi year the valuable player was probably Navy' Gloria Brown, a junior. She made 7 field goal in 13 attempt and threw in 7 foul hot out of 9 trie for a total individual score of 21. The 5'3" Brown al o led the rebounding department with grabs. Leading the scoring for Army was senior Ellen Shrader, who played forward . She hit 3 time from the field and made 3 free to es for a total of 9 marker . Other scorer were : Reeky Baker, Marilyn Graham, Betty Workman, and Marion Babraucka of Army; Mary Ann CiGiacomantonio, Sally Smith, Martha Trombley, Lorene Dornback, and Diane McGaughey of Navy.
The J.V. game was a test of defensive play with the Army team winning 14-1 I. Even though the game wa not a high-scoring one, several girls showed a great deal of fight and scrappiness, and seem promi ing for next year's contest.

tion, i one of the newest and rapidly-growing clubs at Shaw. Under th<t direction of Mi s Kurtz, these girls spend much time and energy improving their aquatic techniques. Catalina Club meets every Monday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Following the business meeting, the girls practice in the water.
Becoming a member of Catalina Club i considered to be quite an honor. A series of swim clinics are held where different skills and formations are taught. After these clinic are over, a final election is made. Girl are cho en on the basis of skill, gracefulne , and form.
If any girl in Shaw is interested in synchronized swimming, she should not hesitate to try out for Catalina Swim Club.
