Introduction
This survey of the gravestones in the kirkyard of the East Church, Cromarty was carried out by Cromarty Courthouse and Cromarty History Society during 1991 and 1992. The full survey details, including measurements of many stones and details of carvings, are lodged with Cromarty Courthouse.
This publication contains:
An index to names appearing on the inscriptions on the stones.
An index to initials appearing on the stones with the second initial (surname) first.
A listing of the stones giving reference numbers as on the map and details of the inscription and date.
A map of the kirkyard with positions of stones marked. Stones are each given a reference number and additional stones, uncovered during the survey, are identified by the use of decimal points in the numbering system. Thus stone number 165.0 became 165.1 when a stone (165.2) was discovered beside it.
A number of stones in the kirkyard were carved by Hugh Miller (nos 77, 81, 92, 110, 160, 165, 248, 269, 284). These are all table stones and most are characterised by a scalloped edge to the table top.
A number of other stones mark the graves of persons related to Miller or described by him in My Schools and Schoolmasters and Scenes and Legends of the North of Scotland. Stone 101.1 commemorates Miller's father's first wife, her mother and Miller's two younger sisters; 284.0 and 291.0 mark the graves of members of his mother's family. Reference to Hugh Miller is made on stones 307.0 (William Forsyth, whose life Miller recorded in Memoir of William Forsyth, reprinted in Tales and Sketches) and 320.0 (Robert Ross, agent for the Commercial Bank for whom Miller worked as an accountant).
In Scenes and Legends, chapter XXVI, Miller tells of the opening of Meggie o' the Shore's grave (stone 96.0) and of how one of her friends removed, as a keepsake, a pin from the linen cap still on Meggie's skull. Chapter XXXVIII and My Schools and Schoolmasters, chapter III, contain descriptions of the old parish school which stood at the east end of the kirkyard (a wall of dressed sandstone, possibly part of this building, can still be seen), and detail the games which the boys played in the kirkyard
and tell of how some boys took revenge on a particularly violent schoolmaster ("Black Russell") by hiding among the gravestones and frightening him as he returned from the school in the dark. The miller's ghost which haunted Munro the Post (Scenes and Legends, chapter XXV) made his final appearance just outside the gate at the east end of the kirkyard.
In the west porch of the church is a fourteenth century gravestone, not included in this survey, which was uncovered in front of the pulpit during restoration work in the 1970s. This is carved with a cross on a stepped base, the head of the cross being elaborately decorated. Beside the cross are two long swords and an open book. The stone is in poor condition but is clearly of the same type as similar stones at Kirkmichael, Cullicudden, Urquhart and other churches in the Black Isle.
David Alston, Curator, Cromarty Courthouse.October 1993.

WITH THOSE OF HER HUSBAND AND THEIR FIVE CHILDREN WHOM THEY SURVIVED THIS STONE IS ERECTED IN 1888 BY HIS GREAT GRANSDON WILLIAM MACANDREW OF WESTWOOD HOUSE LITTLE HORKESLEY ESSEX TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF A GOOD MAN
This stone replaced an earlier tablet which read:
WILLIAM FORSYTH ESQUIREDied the 30th January, 1800, in the 78th year of his age; A Man loved for his benevolence,Honoured for his integrity, and revered for his piety. He was religious without gloom; Cheerful without levity; Bountiful without ostentation. Rigid in the discharge of his own duties,he was charitable and lenient in his judgement of others. His kindness and hospitality were unbounded, and in him the Destitute found a Friend, the Oppressed a Protector.
On the 7th August, 1808, aged sixty-six,died ELIZABETH, His beloved Wife, In obedience to whose last desirethis Tablet is inscribed to his Memory, which she ever cherished with tender affection, and adorned by the practice of
similar virtues. With characteristic humility she wished that merely her death should be recorded on this stone;and to those who knew her no other memorial was wanting, not is it necessary, even if it were possible, to delineate to the passing Stranger the beauty of her deportment, the strength of her understanding, and the benignity of her heart; but rather to admonish him, from such bright examples, that the paths of godliness and virtue lead to happiness on earth and the assurance of the joys beyond the Grave.
Of their children they survived PATRICK, who died at the age of 20 in the East Indies; and JAMES, ISABELLA, MARGARET, WILLIAM, AND ELIZABETH, who, with their Parents, were buried in this place.
