  • Easter at JJ White

  • What now?

We’ve probably all had the experience of waiting, working, and preparing for a special event. Maybe someone special is coming to visit or we have a big project at work or school. Whatever it is, we work hard getting ready. Then the big day comes, and we celebrate and enjoy the day. Shortly after that, the folks for whom we waited and planned go home. We eat leftovers for a day or two, and then we have to go buy groceries again. The big project ends and another one begins. Life settles back into what it was before the big day, and we wonder what we’re supposed to do now.

Something like that settles over us in this season after Easter. We in the church spend a lot of time and energy preparing for that biggest celebration of the Christian year. We spend extra time in study and prayer. The choir works hard for weeks and weeks preparing for special services and then for a big festival on Easter morning. During Holy Week many of us went to worship more in one week than we usually do in a month. Easter was a grand and glorious celebration for us at J. J. White. Sunrise worship started our day, and breakfast and another worship opportunity later that morning capped it off. Worship was full of joy and hope, and we all sang Hallelujah with gusto and joy.

Now what? Now that the days after Easter have become weeks we wonder what difference all our preparation made in our

lives. We are not alone. The first disciples must have had even more cause for wonder after their first Easter experiences. Some of them who had been fishermen before they met Jesus decided they’d spend some time doing what they had done before. If they were looking to restore something predictable and normal in their lives, their plan didn’t work so well. Jesus met them while they were fishing and nurtured their understanding of their call to be something different than they had been before.

Jesus continues to meet us, too. Maybe not after a fishing trip, but in ways that are meaningful for our lives, Jesus comes to us and assures us that all we have experienced has changed us. We are not who we thought we were. We are no longer bound by sin or even death. The world is not as we thought it was. Because Christ is risen, everything is new; opportunity abounds.

So, what now? Now we continue to worship, pray, and serve together as the Body of Christ. The Risen Christ has much more to say to us, and much more for us to do. I look forward to worship and all the other things we will do together in response to the call of the Risen Christ in the life we share together. Opportunity does, indeed, abound. And so do the challenges that go with it. We are not alone in facing them. The Risen Christ is with us, and if even death could not hold him, then, in him, we find all we need to be faithful.

    Thanks be to God!

  • Notesfrom Music Director, Deanna Phelps

I hope you enjoyed all the music of our Lenten and Easter worship as much as we enjoyed preparing it. In fact, I hope you enjoyed it more than we did, because sometimes during the many rehearsals we held we were not enjoying ourselves very much. If you haven’t found opportunity to let the choir know how much you appreciate their contributions to worship, I hope you will soon. They work awfully hard to help our worship happen week after week. Please let them know how much you appreciate their ministry.

The choir will continue to contribute to worship through Sunday, June 8, the Day of Pentecost before taking some well-deserved rest during summer. They will return to the loft in early August. Summer gives us opportunities to hear from friends from both within and beyond our congregation. We look forward to those opportunities again this year. Between now and then, the children will be joining us again, and we’ll have several other special pieces to add to the service. We’re always ready to welcome new singers. See me for more information. Let’s make music together.

  • Mark Kroos plays 2 guitar necks at the same time. Originally from Lansing, MI, but currently based in Williamsburg, VA, he is one of the only people in the world touring his trade. His primarily instrumental style is characterized by open harmonies, polyphonic textures, incredible tapping technique, and is as entertaining to watch as it is to listen to. Live performances burst with energy and magnetism not typical of solo guitar music. Drawing influence from folk, Celtic, indie, and even punk rock artists as well as other great guitarists such as Michael Hedges, Tommy Emmanuel and Leo Kottke, Mark Kroos has developed his own edge to the acoustic guitar.

Go to http://www.markkroos.com/ for more info on Mark Kroos. Contact Kennon Singley for details.

Everyone is invited to a Mark Kroos “Concert on the Grounds”
