What are Earthquakes?Earthquakes are a motion or trembling of the ground. They occur at fault linesSeismographs record the force of the earthquake where the seismographs are located.G is the acceleration due to gravity, seismographs use it as a unit of acceleration
FrequencyFrequency is how many cycles in a second the mass goes back to its starting positionNatural period is how long it take for one cycle.
Response Spectrum is when you put all the earthquakes on a graph and estimating what the force on a building might feel like
The Ground Natural Frequency is how the rate at which the ground shakes during an earthquake.Resonance is the frequency of the ground close to the building.
How do you think certain building types will react? Flexible? Rigid?
Building Response Rigid buildings would most
likely snap or crack without notice.
Flexible Buildings will sway toward the direction of the earthquake.
Building an earthquake proof building
There are several things needed to consider in making a safe building:The material and design of the building.Building structure: the brace frame structure works the bestFigure out the expected force on the structure during the earthquake and design to protects against that expected force.
Gluing it Together We learned that it is important to make building that are earthquake proof or will resist earthquakes. We also learned that to create earthquake proof housing and building you need to be able to find out the buildings natural frequency.
