Selecting the Perfect Tree, 9:30-10:15am & 1-1:45pm

There’s a lot to consider when selecting a tree…mature height and spread, flowering ornamental versus ever-green, fall color, branch structure for a narrow or large space, or trees for dry or wet spaces. Phelan Gardens nurseryman, Alex Crochet, will introduce tree species best suited for your location and the Pikes Peak Region.

The Art of Bonsai, Live Demonstrations at 10:30am & 1:30pm & All Day Info Station with PPBS Members The word “Bonsai” means “planted in a container”. This art form, over a thousand years old is derived from an an-cient Chinese horticultural practice, part of which was then redeveloped under the influence of Japanese Zen Bud-dhism. The ultimate goal of growing a Bonsai is to create a miniaturized but realistic representation of nature in the form of a tree. David Kuntz, President of the Pikes Peak Bonsai Society will offer live demonstrations on pruning &

shaping of bonsai trees. PPBS members will be at the station all day to answer questions. Visit with them or even bring in your own bonsai sample to receive counsel from their years of experience! Bonsai, soil, & pots will also be available for sale.

Discover Hugelkultur: A Technique for Building Soil With Wood, 3:15-4pm Hugelkultur is a technique for leveraging the natural system of fungal decomposition to turn old wood into new soil. Kyle Katsos of Earth Expressions Landscape & Maintenance teaches how to make what once was dead live again! No stick left behind.
