1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

This exercise helps us learn to explore ways of defining ground-related space by using the progression of point to line to plane. I learned that what you see actually depend on the position and angle of your view.

1.2 MASS

This exercise helps us learn that how the ground can be carved into different shapes and then demonstrate in a section drawing. Different degree of shading and line weight can be used to express the contrast of solid and void , darkness and light. It gives us an idea that how to introduce lighting in an interesting way.

1.3 FRAME & INFILL

Through this exercise, we shifted our views to the sky, and show the design through its form. By inserting different forms of objects in different ways such as suspension, framing, it gave functions to those objects.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

Herring Island is a small island not far away from city. It can only be accessed by boat which makes itself a secret place. The island is a natural haven that is formed with regional vegetation and vegetation. There are many environmental sculptures along the walking trail loop around the island.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

This Project is inspired by the mysterious bamboo forest in ancient Chinese action movie, which is always peaceful and secret. As Chinese style became the theme of my project, I use circle as the primary shape as it symbolizes the Ying and Yang which indicates that human and nature coexist harmoniously.

It intends to give the visitors an interesting and memorable experience as you will experience different visibility and density from every different angle. It is place along the main path where everyone can easily access. However the secret will not be revealed easily unless you spend time to travel through each level of the pavilion.

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

As a good design, all the elements should in same language and talk to each other. So the rectangular block is replaced by the circular maze in order to response to the whole, so do the function rooms. In order to make the concept more prominent, more columns are inserted in to achieve various visibility.

4.0 REFLECTION

Throughout the whole design process, my thoughts are keeping expanded after the three exercises. As those exercises are teaching me three different techniques to develop my design. I also learned that how a complete design process goes. Conceptacle model is an interesting part, which helps us to have an initial concept and theme for our design. At the same time, it’s the most challenging part for me as well. This is my first time to know about the idea of conceptacle model, I didn’t even know what I should do. I was so confused by definition, it seemed abstract, but you have to demonstrate your ideas well in this simple little model. This was definitely difficult for me at the beginning. However, once you had enough ideas and a concept for your design, it would be quite easy and you could find it quite useful to have this for your later design. I was lucky that I got an interesting theme to develop, so the concept of the design is explicit, that is the thing I think I went well. However, I think I didn’t do well in the integration of the three exercises. To achieve the same architecture language for the whole design, it was then quite challenging for me to integrate these three different elements into one design. Overall, the whole design process is on a right track as constructive feedbacks were always given in time before we continued to the next step.
