RESEARCH

THE GOLDENRECORD

Page 10: EARTH ARTIFACT
Page 11: EARTH ARTIFACT

I created this piece of artwork using pencil, a pair of compasses and fine liner pens which ranged in thickness. I took inspiration from the mathematic signs and symbols I came across during research, and felt like using them in my artwork because symbols can be understood across the world in all languages. Because the original Golden Record uses diagrams of symbols and numbers that aren’t exciting, I decided to experiment with this further and create an abstract piece using mathematical symbols. This should not only be informative of symbols but it presents them in a more charismatic way.

These are variations of my design which I will decide on when compiling my final book. For this design I have used my original heart drawing and used an image of a human BPM reading to show the function of the heart.

Page 28: EARTH ARTIFACT

This is my completed design for showing the structure of the human body, in which I layered a measurement of proportions, a body map showing various body actions and my own drawing of a skeleton. I worked from my original sketch and plan on the left.

I drew this skeleton using fine liners and the techniques of crosshatching and hatching to create shadows and definition.

Page 30: EARTH ARTIFACT

Here I have completed a design based on human brain cells for the human aspect of my project. I used a drawing I completed myself of human brain cells using fineliners, and imported this into photoshop. I used the filters to add colours and effects and added green and blue tones to my work. This piece has featured because it shows the network of the human brain and describes how everything relies on the brain.

For this design I took inspiration from the Jewish Kaballah, which I researched in my book ‘Information Is beautiful’ (David McCandless). They traditionally describe the ten stages in which the universe was created, and the ten qualities of God. Now following a more modern approach, it describes an adults growth as they ascend the tree and acquire these qualities for themselves. I created my own version of this tree using illustrator and photoshop, to create a slick and modern infographic.

TOPICS

SCIENCE

Page 34: EARTH ARTIFACT
Page 35: EARTH ARTIFACT

Here I have shown the nature side of science through the study of a leaf. I used my original leaf drawings and desaturated them and straightened them to show studies of leaves through living and dying.

Page 36: EARTH ARTIFACT

Here I have shown my interpretation of the map of the world, as I feel it is important to have knowledge of what our word is shaped like. To show this in a more visually appealing way I used geographic patterns to decorate the map and used a contrast between colour and greyscale to distinguish this.

These are my own primary photographs that I have used to sample textures from. I cropped each texture and inserted it behind my original sketch to include them in the design.

This is my original sketch in which I drew 20 boxes, and in some of them completed hand drawn textures using fineliners.

Here I have created a simple yet effective display of a map of the internet, using a detailed info graphic I found on a website. I have decided to display the map of the internet to show it’s complexity, and it also describes the forms of communication that we use in the modern world. I feel that the look is very effective and also interesting to discover, and it describes the networks we use as a planet.

Page 44: EARTH ARTIFACT
Page 45: EARTH ARTIFACT

Here I have hand-drawn the Fibonacci spiral on a book page to use in my work. I chose to use the Fibonacci spiral because of it’s importance in sequences in maths and natural patterns. I drew this on book pages to add more artistic value and to give the idea of the Fibonacci sequence being very old.

This is a pattern I discovered which uses the rules of the Fibonacci sequencehttp://www.futures-investor.co.uk/fibonacci_number_sequence.htm

I created these symbols on my design by using the texts ‘Wingdings, Travelcons and Working Signs’, which I downloaded from Dafont.com. This design describes the idea that worlds cannot be understood through different languages, however symbols and signs can all be understood across the world because they appear the same in every country and all have the same meaning per semiotic. They are important for getting around the world and are often seen in public areas, like airports.

Here I have created a design based on the braille alphabet to describe different means of communication that are used throughout the planet. I took inspiration from the braille alphabet and created a sequence of the alphabet in a diagonal direction to create an abstract and interesting form.

Page 49: EARTH ARTIFACT

Here I have created an info graphic on the geographic distribution of living languages using the table opposite. The outside displays the geographic distribution and the inside represents the total living languages.

TOPICSMECHANICS OF LIFE

Page 52: EARTH ARTIFACT

This is a design to show the change and difference between seasons on our planet. It shows the mechanics of the Earth in the sense of how it changes the seasons according to the position and axis of the planet, and also the different materials and elements of the seasons.

Page 53: EARTH ARTIFACT

These are my primary photographs that I used for this design. I selected a range of photographs according to the season in which they were taken, so when merged together they would show the differences between seasons, even in different places.

Here I have used the 4_21 Polytope on top of a geometrical shape. The 4_21 Polytope is the algebraic form at the centre of a universal theory of everything. The theory attempts to unify quantam physics and gravitation in hopes of ultimately explaining the universe. It’s dimension-within-dimension structure creates a lattice that predicts all known and postulated particles and forces in the universe. Each intersection represents an element.

Here I have created a view of the position of all the planets. I created the planet pattern using Photoshop and used the pattern on the right as decoration. The alignment of the planets is important as it shows our position and also explains the conditions that have allowed life on our planet.
