Welcome to the 33rd annual Christmas at Luther. At this year’s festival, the musical offerings of Luther’s student musicians recall the angels’ song from the gospel of Luke:

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace among people.” (Luke 2:14)

The angels’ song of praise and hope was chosen as the theme for this year’s festival to commemorate the World War I Christmas Truce, held 100 years ago. On Christmas Eve 1914, close to 100,000 British and German soldiers on the war’s western front in Europe made a temporary peace and celebrated Christmas together. Groups of soldiers celebrated Christmas across and between the trenches from which they had waged war against each other. In the words of one German soldier who participated in the truce: “Christmas, the celebration of Love, managed to bring mortal enemies together as our friends for a time.”

As they did 100 years ago, people across the world yearn for peace to reign in nations, neighborhoods, homes, and hearts. We pray God will use us to “give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:79).

The extraordinary music you will hear at this year’s festival announces the birth of the Prince of Peace. Through word and deed may we carry this joyful message of love, promise, and hope to all of creation.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace!

This year’s backdrop was developed from the idea of peace and the symbol of the dove, as well as our home on Earth. We collaborated with the Luther College Diversity Center to translate the word “peace” from languages spoken by students at Luther, and incorporated a number of those words into the background images. Each of the colored sections of the illustration rep-resents a different aspect of our world along with the colors of the robes and decorations of Christmas at Luther.

Selections from MessiahG. F. Handel (1685–1759)

Soprano RecitativesText: Luke 2:8–13Soprano Soloist

There were shepherds abiding in the field,

keeping watch over their flocks by night.

And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them,

and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,

and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them: “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:

Christ, by highest heav’n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin’s womb.Veiled in flesh the Godhead see! Hail, incarnate deity! Pleased as man with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel!Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn king!”

Hail the heav’n born Prince of peace!Hail the Son of righteousness!Light and life to all he brings, ris’n with healing in his wings.Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, born to raise each child of earth, born to give us second birth.Hark! Long years ago on a deep winter night,

High in the heav’ns a star shone bright,

While in a manger a wee Baby lay,Sweetly asleep on a bed of hay.

Jesus, the Lord was that Baby so small,

Laid down to sleep in a humble stall; Then came the star and it stood

overhead,Shedding its light ’round His little bed.

Dear Baby Jesus, how tiny Thou art,I’ll make a place for Thee in my heart,And when the stars in the heavens I

see,Ever and always I think of Thee.

dominions, might and majesty.Thy name be hallow’d on earth,As it is hallow’d in heav’n.Thou rememb’rest the poor and the

distress’d.And upon them that fear Thy NameShow’rs of blessing unnumber’d shall

fall;Peace shall follow them.By still waters their path shall be.Sing then of mercy, of judgment, of

kingdoms, of thrones, dominions and pow’r for evermore.

Come to us O Lord in splendor bright,Fill our hearts with everlasting light.Amen

Today Christ is born, today the Savior has appeared, today on earth the Angels sing, the Archangels rejoice, today the righteous rejoice, saying:Glory to God in the highest, Alleluia.

It Came upon the Midnight Clear

Richard S. Willis (1819–1900)arr. John ScottText: Edmund H. Sears (1810–1876)Audience is invited to stand and sing.

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold:“Peace on the earth, good will to all, from heav’n’s all gracious king.”The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come

with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heav’nly music floats o’er all the weary world.Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hov’ring wing, and ever o’er its babel sounds the blessed angels sing.

For lo! The days are hast’ning on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing.

mine, burning in your eyes so bright? Will you shine this Light for all

humankind, piercing through the dark of this night.Oh, Child of mine, I love you,as I hold you close to my heart,I feel the warmth of your Father’s love; You are his star, Oh Child of mine.

In the Bleak MidwinterGustav Holst (1874–1934)arr. Ola Gjeilo (1978–)Text: Christina Rossetti (1830–1894)Cathedral Choir

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,

earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;

snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,

in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;

heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign.

In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed

the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a

lamb; if I were a Wise Man, I would do my

part; yet what I can I give him: give my

heart.

Nation shall not lift up a sword against nation,

neither shall they learn war any more. And none shall make them afraid, neither shall the sword go through

their land.Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed

each other.Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down

from heaven.Open to me the gates of

righteousness, I will go into them.Let all the nations be gathered

together, and let the people be assembled; and let them hear, and say, it is the

truth. And it shall come, that I will gather all

nations and tongues. And they shall come and see my glory. And I will set a sign among them, and they shall declare my glory

among the nations. For as the new heavens and the new

earth, which I will make, shall remain before

remain for ever.

Music at Luther (http://music.luther.edu)The Luther campus is alive with the sounds of six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, and two jazz bands. Nearly 1,000 student musicians participate in our large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons, and master classes. More than 300 students pursue the rigorous Luther music major, studying music theory, ear training, history, music education, composition, church music, and performance. It all adds up to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world!

Martin Luther—our namesake—believed music to be “one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” For more than 130 years, Luther students have been sharing this marvelous gift with audiences across the country and around the globe.

Luther College (www.luther.edu)Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther College provides its 2,400 students with a classic liberal arts education.

Luther offers more than 60 majors and preprofessional and certificate programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. The college’s strong academic program includes internships, professional semesters, and extensive study-abroad opportunities. Dedicated and talented faculty help Luther students develop solid research, writing, and critical-thinking skills, while the close-knit community imbues its members with an environmental and service ethos.

The Phi Beta Kappa college is bolstered by its Lutheran foundation, celebrated for its vibrant music and arts tradition, and enriched by its strong athletic program.
