Around 3100 BCE, Upper and Lower Egypt are united under Menes, the first Pharaoh. Irrigation and other water control projects are developed.
From 2700–2200 BCE, the great pyramids were built.
Around 2600, civilization emerged along the Indus river in northwestern India (present-day Pakistan).
From 2050-1650 BCE, the Pharaohs were at the height of their power.
From 1792 to 1750, Hammurabi ruled Mesopotamia and instituted Hammurabi’s Code.
From 1570–1050 BCE, the Shang Dynasty ruled China. It is important to note that legend describes an earlier Xia Dynasty as the time when the Chinese first built irrigation and drainage systems to tame the waters of the Yellow River.

Invasions and unpredictable flooding were common in Egypt.
Priests ruled the government in Egypt.
The Indus River Valley was a rural civilization with limited innovations.
